Directed by
DOUGLAS RINTOUL
TUE 14 – SAT 18 MARCH One of the twentieth century’s landmark plays, Arthur Miller’s The Crucible stands as both a historical record and a political parable for our times. In a small 17th century New England town a children’s game has terrifying consequences as allegations of witchcraft break out. Quickly caught up in an unstoppable flow of paranoia, accusation and manipulation, the community is consumed by a climate of suspicion where no person is safe from his neighbour. The bold new production of The Crucible, starring Charlie Condou (Coronation Street) as the witch hunter Reverend Hale and Victoria Yates (Call the Midwife) as the falsely accused Elizabeth Proctor, is directed by Douglas Rintoul, Artistic Director of the Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch, and brings together music and movement through a strong and ever present cast. This atmospheric staging of a theatre classic is co-produced with Selladoor Productions, in association with Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, and is a chilling reminder of the frailty of reason in the face of hysteria. Selladoor Productions have staged over 50 touring productions to date, including recent successful UK tours of The History Boys, Avenue Q, Footloose and American Idiot.

Essex 1968. Like millions of other working women, each morning Rita is just trying to get her husband out of bed, get the kids off to school and get to work at the factory on time. But life is about to change forever when it’s announced that the girls in the stitching room of Ford’s Dagenham car plant will have their pay grade dropped to the ‘unskilled’. MON 5 – SAT 10 JUNE
E FRI & SAT EV
When Richard Willey (Andrew Hall), a Government Junior Minister, plans to spend the evening with Jane Worthington (Susie Amy), one of the Opposition’s typists, in the Westminster Hotel, things go disastrously wrong - beginning with the discovery of a body trapped in the hotel’s only unreliable sash window. Desperately trying to get out of an extremely sticky situation, Richard calls for his secretary, George Pigden (Shaun Williamson) who, through Richard’s lies sinks further and further into trouble with everybody and ends up going through an identity crisis. Things go from bad to worse with the arrival of Jane’s distraught young husband and with the addition of an unscrupulous waiter (James Holmes), a frustrated Hotel Manager (Arthur Bostrom), Mrs Willey (Sue Holderness) and Nurse Foster - things really come to a head! Ray Cooney is today recognised theatrically and publicly as ‘The master of farce’ (The Telegraph) whose credits include Run For Your Wife, Funny Money and It Runs In The Family. This stellar company includes Shaun Williamson (EastEnders, Extras); Sue Holderness (Only Fools & Horses, Green Green Grass); Andrew Hall (Butterflies, Coronation Street); Susie Amy (Footballers’ Wives); James Holmes (Miranda) and Arthur Bostrom (‘Allo ‘Allo!).
