Introducing the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment We know that when it comes to choosing a concert, there are a lot of other orchestras in London you could go to; and of course a lot of good reasons to just stay at home. So why choose the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment? Well, apart from our rather enticing name we reckon it comes down to three things: Originality, Freshness and Zest.

Principal Artists: Iván Fischer Vladimir Jurowski Sir Simon Rattle Emeritus Conductors: Frans Brüggen Sir Charles Mackerras Sir Roger Norrington

So, Originality: the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) play on original instruments (or copies of them) and play in styles appropriate to the age of the music. So you get to hear what Mozart or Beethoven actually intended (or pretty damn close) rather than a modern version. Freshness: the OAE isn’t a full time Orchestra. We’re not playing 365 days a year and we don’t play Beethoven’s fifth symphony every other month. This means that when we do, we’re really excited and fired up about it. We like to think that this comes across. Lastly, Zest: this is the X factor. We actually love what we do. How often do you see an Orchestra smile on stage? We do. We’re passionate about our music and want you to be too. So there you have it. Originality, Freshness and Zest. The last two make us sound a bit like a gin and tonic. But maybe that’s not such a bad thing.

See you at a concert soon!

Celebrating Pergolesi Th ursday 7 October 2010 Queen Elizabeth Hall, 7pm Best known for his Stabat Mater (excerpts of which are performed as part of the pre-concert event) Pergolesi is celebrated in tonight’s concert with performances of two pieces which are both superb showcases for the composer’s moving, eloquent and hauntingly beautiful writing. Soprano Roberta Invernizzi, who made her debut with the OAE to great acclaim recently, is the soloist for these and accompanying arias by Mozart. OAE Extras at 5.45pm Queen Elizabeth Hall. Admission Free Instrumentalists from the Ann and Peter Law OAE Experience are joined by young singers Louise Alder and Tom Verney to perform excerpts from Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater.

French connections Tuesday 9 November 2010 Queen Elizabeth Hall, 7pm Little known he may be now, but Cherubini was highly rated by none other than Beethoven, with the composer regarding him as the greatest of his contemporaries. The overture and an aria from his opera Medea, which was championed by Maria Callas, no less, represent him here. Cherubini’s contemporary Etienne Méhul is perhaps even less known now but again, was highly regarded in his day. His noble Symphony 4 is performed this evening. The concert is rounded off with Berlioz’s tour de force for soprano and orchestra, and Mozart’s popular Paris Symphony. OAE Extras at 5.45pm Queen Elizabeth Hall. Symph onic Enligh tenment

Vladimir Jurowski

Friday 21 January 2011 Royal Festival Hall, 7pm

Wagner Prelude to Parsifal Mahler Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen Mahler Totenfeier Liszt Les préludes

The OAE shines its musical torch into the realms of later repertoire in this concert, shedding light on some lesser known music by Mahler, and favourites by Wagner and Liszt. Sarah Connolly is the star soloist for Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer, written in the aftermath of an unhappy affair with a soprano. Mahler’s Totenfeier is an extraordinarily exciting, powerful piece, and his first foray into orchestral music. It was later reworked into the first movement of his second symphony, from which you may recognise it. Liszt’s Les préludes rounds the concert off in grand symphonic style.

From a dream to revolution Tuesday 8 February 2011 Queen Elizabeth Hall, 7pm Renowned conductor David Zinman makes his OAE debut at this concert which starts in style with Mendelssohn’s evocative music to Shakespeare’s play. Weber’s famous clarinet concerto features Antony Pay, the OAE’s Principal Clarinet, with Weber’s music being a fantastic showcase of the beautiful tones of a period instrument. Beethoven’s Symphony 7, full of the spirit of the French Revolution, closes the evening.

Th e oth er amazing Mr Bach Th ursday 3 March 2011 Queen Elizabeth Hall, 7pm One of JS Bach’s twenty children, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was a great composer in his own right and his music provides a fascinating link between that of his father and, looking ahead, to that of Haydn and Mozart. Though his father was his only teacher, his music is distinctively different, even radical. Written with flair and an emphasis on melody, occasional edgy shifts and changes of direction keep the audience on its toes‌ OAE Extras at 5.45pm Queen Elizabeth Hall. Admission Free A dramatised event looking at flutes in the court of CPE Bach, with OAE Principal Flute Lisa Beznosiuk. Mozart Symphony No. 40 in G minor Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Schubert Symphony No. 4 in C minor, Tragic

Mozart’s daring Symphony 40 opens this concert, one of his most popular but also most enigmatic and dark pieces. This perhaps complements the dark undertones of Schubert’s fourth Symphony, the opening movement of which is reminiscent of the Mozart. Beethoven’s serene Piano Concerto provides the perfect contrast.

A celebration of Handel Saturday 4 June 2011 Queen Elizabeth Hall, 7pm Over 250 years on from his death, Handel remains one of the most popular of all composers. In this concert, presented from the stage, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment celebrates him with its customary vitality. The programme, introduced from the stage, contains two concerti grossi from Opus 6, widely considered to be his orchestral masterpieces – muscular and vibrant music which still sounds fresh today. From Twig to…

Changing the world?

Discover how our instruments have changed over the centuries, in the company of Henrietta Wayne (violin), Ruth Alford (cello) and Cherry Forbes (oboe). Linked to a music and science project inspired by Haydn’s Creation we will look at how we create sound and why our instruments have evolved. We’ll also look at the context for music – indoor, outdoor and music for ceremony. Is there any such thing as the perfect equipment? How long is a note? This promises to be a fascinating and engrossing event and your chance to get up close and personal with period instruments.

50 years ago no one had heard or perhaps even thought of the period instrument movement. When the OAE was established 24 years ago it was a radical, daring move. An Orchestra with no permanent conductor? Playing outmoded instruments? The players were branded crackpots.

Tickets include tea or coffee and cake

All these years later on the period instrument movement has flourished and is an established part of our musical landscape. This session features a panel debate including OAE players looking at how the movement evolved, its impact on the classical music scene and how it might further develop in the future. Tickets include tea or coffee and cake

OAE Extras

The Night Shift

The OAE is about more than just concerts. Through our OAE Extras programme you can learn more about the music, instruments, composers and what we believe makes our performances unique.

The Night Shift is our series of informal late night concerts. Now in its fifth year the series has been highly successful, attracting over 7,000 people to shows so far. The hour-long concerts usually start at 10pm, are presented from the stage and feature live music and DJs in the bar before and after. We will present five Night Shifts from October to June, with the first on 20 October at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. oae.co.uk/thenightshift

At each concert this season you are invited to attend our free OAE Extras events before the concert, many being presented by members of the Orchestra. Three concerts also feature an Aftershow event, featuring an informal discussion and Q&A with artists out in the bar after the show. Our ever popular study day is on 5 March, with the focus this year being on JS Bach’s son, CPE Bach. Our Insight Club series also returns, which aims to give you an even closer look at the music and Orchestra in a convivial and relaxed atmosphere. OAE Extras events offer a great opportunity to find out more about the music and Orchestra. Many of them don’t require any musical knowledge in order to enjoy them, so if you’re new to classical music then look out for this symbol:

Attitude The OAE’s student scheme, Attitude, continues to be incredibly popular, with over 3,500 students now signed up to the mailing list. The scheme is free to join and gives students access to discounted tickets and special events, with the occasional free beer thrown in! We are also always looking for Attitude representatives to promote the scheme and the Orchestra across London’s universities and colleges. To find out more call: 020 7239 9374 or visit oae.co.uk/attitude
