ART & DESIGN MAGAZINE

letter from the editor

Studies done by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization recently, have indicated that in the next fifteen years learning objectives will focus on competencies rather than knowledge and learning will be actively re-integrated into real-life. The purpose of art and design education in school education is to develop applied creativity, which includes knowing (knowledge) and does not exclude doing (competency), and to be connected with the local and the global context in real life. The 3rd edition of Orchid showcases the efforts to strengthen the foundational value of art and design in education at school level, by developing the area of non-verbal thought or creative thinking in a child, and communicating the same though an Art & Design newsletter every fortnight among the students community in our school. The Orchid magazine, Issue 3, is a compilation of the six issues of Orchid that were created and published this year. We hope that you will like it. In this issue, we have showcased student workshops, competitions, alumni work and work done by the students at AVS, using indigenous and foreign techniques. Happy viewing!

Art Exhibition

The Art exhibition for Founders’ Celebrations in 2018 showcased pottery and plaster of paris work of the students. Life size paintings on the Indian theme were the main attraction of the exhibition. The net installation of birds was the central feature of the exhibition hall. The artworks were in acrylic, water and oil colours.

MIXED MEDIA WORKSHOP with Ziya Tarapore Mrs. Ziya Tarapore conducted the mixed media painting workshop at AVS from 10th to 14th December, 2018. She is a docent at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York and is greatly inspired by nature, colours, different textures and shapes. Her artworks are influenced by the landscape around her. She believes that colour can be manipulated in a myriad of ways and is a great subject for experimentation.

8

During the workshop, the students learnt how to use various mediums and compile their artworks with creativity and imagination. Students used materials such as cardboards, tissue papers, straw cleaners, popsicle sticks, old clothes, magazines and newspapers. They used layers of paper, dyes of different colours and textures to create a unique mixed media painting. Mrs. Tarapore gave us a presentation on various art styles that have evolved through time. The students experimented with dyeing and painting of different types and found an efficient way of reusing and recycling materials for creative expressions. They created a mixed media painting of size 4 X 8 feet (see picture on previous page). It was our privilege to have her at AVS for the workshop. Shibori and Natural Dye Workshop

with Daksha Salam

T

he Shibori and Natural dye workshop was conducted by AVS alumnus, Mr. Daksha Salam on 9th and 10th Feb 2019. He is a Textile designer from NID Ahmedabad. His graduation project in Textiles was awarded the best graduation project of the year 2018-19, at NID Ahmeabad.

10

S

hibori’ is a traditional Japanese technique of manual resist dyeing which produces pattern on fabric. Mr. Salam demonstrated the folding techniques in the four different types of Shibori. ‘KANOKO’ Shibori is done by binding and resist dyeing. In ‘ARASHI’ Shibori, the fabric is wrapped around a pole before binding it. ‘ARASHI’ is known as ‘storm’ in Japanese as it gives an image of a storm. ‘ITAJIME’ is a type of Shibori where the patterns on the fabric are produced by clamping. ‘NUI’ is a type of Shibori where the patterns are produced by doing stitching on the fabric. The students tried their hands on all the different kinds of Shibori techniques.

N

atural dyes are made from organic raw materials like onion peel which gives green colour dye, turmeric gives yellow colour dye and tea waste gives beige colour dye. While making the different Shibori patterns on fabric, Mr. Salam told the students that “by keeping the design simple we will get a better result.”

11

We were amazed by the magic created by using the different Shibori techniques and enjoyed the workshop, making our own colourful scarves. We hope to have more such workshops in future, at AVS. By Deep Ngangom / Caricature of Mr. Salam by Anushcka Joshi 12

CARTOONS COMICS & CARICATURES WORKSHOP with Shaunauk Sokey

T

he Cartoons Comics and Caricatures workshop was held on the 9th and 10th of Feb, 2019 by Mr. Shaunak Sokey, an AVS alumnus and an animator from NID Ahmedabad.

13

Mr. Sokey shared his experiences, ideas and techniques. He told us that before starting any sketch we should do a rough sketch in the correct volume. To draw a perfect caricature we should play with the distance between the face features. The main thing about caricature is to exaggerate the prominent features. For comics, he told us that the main technique is lime light. The focus should be on the main character and the rest can be shaded. Before drawing any face or expression there should be a thumbnail (a rough expression for you to refer). His workshop was very informative and inspiring. It was a privilege to have him at AVS to teach the skill to students. By Avneet Kaur Arora / Caricature of Mr. Sokey by Anushcka Joshi

T

with Mr. K. K. Gandhi

he Acrylic Colours Painting Workshop was conducted by Mr. K. K. Gandhi from 12th to 15th Feb, 2019. He is an internationally renowned artist from Jammu. During the workshop, Mr. Gandhi demonstrated how to utilize the fast drying property of Acrylic colours, to create unusal naturescapes with his unique style of painting. He painted two large canvases within three painting sessions with the students.

Mr. Gandhi emphasized that every artist has his own perspective and this is why every artwork has a story to tell. He said “It is impossible to produce a good drawing overnight.” He was really happy to see the interest shown by the students in learning his technique of painting. The students painted their own canvases during his painting demonstration of the step wells and the himalayas. In Mr. Gandhi’s opinion these kind of workshops should be conducted to enhance the imagination of the students. By Deep Ngangom / Caricature of Mr. Gandhi by Nilasha Bhimsaria 18

FIELD VISIT TO BHALUKPUNG ENVIRONMENTAL PERCEPTION

T

he Environmental Perception field visit to Bhalukpung was on the 10th of March, 2019. The trip started at 6:15 am in the morning. As we reached Bhalukpung, it started to rain. We went to have breakfast at Hotel Pooja which was owned by Munsel’s family. While waiting for the rain to stop, we started to sketch in the balcony. The rain stopped thankfully, as we finished our breakfast. 22

Munsel’s mother treated us with chips and juices. We went to a river bank to do more sketching. The weather was perfect — not too hot and sunny. The students and teachers did sketching and explored the surroundings. We went to the Assam Tourism Guest house nearby, and had a scrumptious lunch. Then we headed back to school. By Deep Ngangom

With Srishti School of Art & design, no two people can have the same experience. Srishti gives you the liberty to choose your own classes which are usually for a very short period of time and you never know what you end up taking away from them. My course ‘Information Arts and Design practices,’ gives me the liberty to do whatever is under the sun and like everything it’s got its pros and cons. It’s been difficult to pinpoint what it is that I want to pursue since I keep dipping my feet here and there. So far I’d say illustrations and animating have drawn me the most. With time I hope I know what it is that I want to do; but for now I am exploring.

P r i ya n g s h a CHittaranjan Currently pursuing New Media at Ryerson University, Toronto

On telling people that I study New Media, I (more often than not) have to explain what that even means. In my own experience, I believe New Media is an amalgamation of art and technology. Be it 3D printing yourself, laser cutting light boxes or even coding indie games — we dabble in a lot of art based on the future. I currently work at a Digital Fabrication Laboratory as a Lab Assistant, helping students from my university with their creative endeavours that includes 3D printing, laser cutting and vinyl cutting. Keeping in mind that the travel bug bit me at a very young age, I also work with an agency that organizes trips for High School students in and around Canada. My next few months are going to be spent in Aguascalientes, a little town tucked away in Mexico. Until then, a team of 28 strives to make a coffee table book about creative solutions to social injustice issues in New York City.

Fine arts at MSU, Baroda has given me a better understanding of my strengths while also making me painfully aware of my limitations. While I am most comfortable working with color pencils I am working to better my skills at other mediums and digitally. Being in Gujarat has also opened my eyes to the cultural complexities in India and I am fairly certain that this will play a part not only in my work, but also in life in general. I will, in the coming years, in this beautiful university, try to venture out of my comfort zone. It is by travelling that I imagine I can best try to grasp all that the world of art has to offer.

53

Shreyaa Goswami Currently pursuing Textile Design at NIFT, Kangra (Himachal Pradesh) A degree in Textile Design deals with the nuances in everything related to a fabric— from its processing, to its weaving, to its printing, and to its end uses. While learning about the chemistry behind textile processing and dealing with the back ache that comes with working 8 hours on a loom every day for two weeks, it is as rewarding as difficult; I mostly find my sense of fulfilment and happiness in areas of surface and printing techniques. If I were to pick a highlight in the one year I’ve acquainted myself with Textile Design, I would say it was probably working with natural dyes and finding out sustainable dyeing solutions through long (but fun) processes of trial and error. NIFT has been a roller coaster so far. It has pushed me over the edge many a times, but also allowed me to grow, explore and do what I love best, creatively. I find myself at a very comfortable position now, grateful for the fact that I am surrounded by people who contribute towards building my skill set every day, a little at a time. I shall also always be extremely grateful for the view that I wake up to every morning — a vital aid for me to keep my peace of mind intact during trying times and end-semester evaluations. I mean, how often do people get to say “I’m doing what I love whilst living by the Himalayas?”
