My Story...

I

can look back to my early teens to trace the beginning of my interest in fashion. It grew into a real passion which took me to a DEC Degree in Fashion Design at Marie-Victorin College in Montreal, Canada. However my passion didn’t stop there! In 2005 it took me to England for a BA (Hons) degree in Fashion from the University of Salford which I completed with a 1st.

Yours truly, Marilyn Bastien B.

London gave me great opportunities to work with leading London labels such as Issa, Emilio de la Morena, Tatjana-Anika and Jaeger. Working for these high end labels over the past 5 years has given me the chance to work closely with creative and production teams and gain some valuable insights. I have specialised myself with the design and production industry programmes such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. This enabled me to take full responsibility in the process of developing several collections with Issa, Emilio de la Morena and Jaeger into technical drawings to facilitate the communications between each department and suppliers. I was also responsible for ensuring manufactures were instructed correctly, fabrics were sourced, fittings and production samples were completed on time and within budget. I liaised with several sales agents around the world to ensure orders were taken and fulfilled on time. I was also involved in keeping the online sale system updated.

Further to my core duties I was also responsible for designing and coordinating various promotional items for events such as London Fashion Week. Examples of these were the creation of invitations, back stage pastses, promotional posters etc all of which I designed with the creative team, sales team and stylists. In 2012 I continued to develop my interest in prints and fashion textile through the MA in Textile design at Chelsea College of Art & Design, a highly acclaimed course. The year allowed me to widen my knowledge through research and working methods to look deeper into my sources of inspiration on how to include sustainability as an approach to design. I realised that it is not an obstacle but an additional source of inspiration which as creators we should take advantage of it! Since the course, I have had the fantastic chance to create print designs for labels such as Tatjana-Anika swimwear and work on Issa’s collaborations creating prints for Banana Republic and C&A Brazil. I also had the chance to do freelance work with the brilliant Jsen Wintle and the artist Olivier Mourao, helping them with the computerisation and technical aspect of their work. I hope you will appreciate my portfolio and consider me for a position amongst your creative and inspiring team as I would relish the opportunity to undertake a position within the Inditex Group. I am looking forward to hear from you.

Modern Fringe Modern fringe is a trend reflecting references seen recently in art, music & movies with a clean & modern twist for the winter season. It is a transition from the boho look that we have been used to seeing over the warm days into more neutral, easy to wear cover up capes. Movies such as “Dallas Buyers Club”, folk music such as “Mumford & Sons”, “Hurray for the Riff Raff” & minimalist draping lines of artist Marc Swanson are setting the trend for this modern use of fringes.

Urban Nomad Urban Nomad is inspired by the look of traditional nomadics living in nordic countries where the climate pushes them to move to survive. It has been given an urban twist with references from bombshells of the 70s such as Janis Joplin & Marianne Faithfull who made fur very feminin. We see the use of new texture such as goat faux fur & mongolian wool.

Sport Deluxe Sport Deluxe is where fashion meet sportswear. Fabrics that we generaly see in an activewear context are being addapted for more fashionable silhouettes. The trend is easy to understand with exercise being more and more part of our everyday lifestyle, the importance of being healthy and looking lean. With quilting being very popular last winter, we see a variety of new patterns emerging for this season.

Issa Spring/Summer 10 fashion show had tropical climate as its source of inspiration. From there, crawling insects came as an idea for prints, invitation, promotional items and for gifts in the shape of a handkerchief. But we didn’t only used them as is, we created movement by using “lenticular” which give a movement effect when looked at from different angles. Issa has been my “springboard” to luxury fashion for the pass 5 years of my career and gave me an incredible experience. It has contributed so much to my developement; how to create a collection, to plan fittings and organise samples, to produce the goods and correspond with manufactures. It provided me the chance to bridge creativity with more technical sides of the process of putting together a collection.

Butterflies are one of nature beautiful asset. There is something mysterious about this insect with its perfectly symmetrical wings and its unique metamorphosis process. In mythology the butterfly represents the soul & freedom. The adult stage of a butterfly is called imago which mean in Latin “image, referring to the appearance. With these elements in hands I decided to investigate on how our image plays a crucial role in expressing our identity. Who makes us who we are, how are roots influence us, when our visions change?

The idea behind this creation was to keep pleats not completely fixed to preserve certain freedom when worn. The fabric used needed to be thick enough to hold the shapes, to have the right feel to pleat but most of all the comfort effect to make women feel like they wrap themselves into a cocoon. Felted wool felt like the right choice for these reasons but also for it’s none fraying edges which allow even more pleats options and finishing. I wanted to design something that would look chic and professional without compromising the identity of the women who will dare it!

FOCUS Form Of Colours from Unusual Sources

Microorganisms which include bacteria, fungus & moulds are a domestic commodity; they have been living amongst us in harmony for some and in discord for others, for as far as life on earth goes back to! As microscopic as they can be, they exist in vast quantities around us fulfilling their purpose of breaking down our compost, flavouring our cheese or evenproducing essential ingredients used in our medicines. But have we ever considered them for their colours? We know that several strains of bacteria and fungus are capable of producing incredible colours as they develop. What if we could use microorganisms of our daily routines to put them to good as pigments maker? What if we could use these colours to diverse applications? What if Science Fiction from our wildest dreams were closer to become reality than we thought? Is it too crazy to think of bacteria as potential sources of colours or it was just a matter of time before realising their potential overlooked at by our issues with germs? They live amongst us or should we say we live amongst them everyday why not let them show themselves?

A selection of prints including a border, a repeat and an all over, inspired by the work done with circular petri dishes and colours coming from the growth of microorganisms.
