Assignment 01 _ Light Precedent Study
“ Inhabit’s Corrulights are sculptural pendant lights that mix light & shadow through repetitive silhouettes fixed around a central sprocket. The results are beautiful, airy, sculptural forms that redefine this simple substance, creating something elegant and worth hanging. The lights take advantage of smart materials in a 70% recycled form, are made in the USA. “ This statement is from the website where I found my precedent study. I was really fascinated with this technique that they used to make this fairly simple, but very modern looking and beautiful lamps. There are several versions of this type of lamps on their website, but the assembly and technique were the same, therefore I decided to create my own lamp using the similar system. My first prototype was made out of chipboard, I wanted to test it how durable would this be and did not want to spend too much money on it. It came out very strong, there were no structural issues so I was really pleased with the results. In this prototype I did not create notches on both end where the materials meet, therefore in some cases it was really tight and hard to slide them into each other. Therefore in my second prototype I made notches on both ends of the material which was cardboard this time. I wanted to see the how the original material that the creator used would look and feel like. I also created slots on all the pieces at the same location and wanted to experiment with weaving through different materials into it. Final design was made out of white acrylic; I though it looked very clean, elegant and modern for this type of lamp assembly. I wanted to keep the top part relatively narrow, just have enough space to hold the light bulb and express the bottom out and create this blooming effect. Since it was going to be a hanging lamp I though the shadows and lights would create an extraordinary results underneath.
