Miss Del Rio Pageant seeking more contestants By BRIAN ARGABRIGHT brian.argabright@ delrionewsherald.com

Del Rio’s young ladies have until Friday to be a part of this year’s Miss Del Rio Pageant. According to pageant director Elsa Reyes, persons interested in competing in either the Miss Del Rio or Miss Del Rio Teen pageants must register by Friday in order to be eligible to compete in the Oct. 8 pageant. Thus far, six girls have signed up to compete in the Teen division while two have signed up for the Miss division. Girls who wish to compete in the Teen division must be between the ages of 14 to 19 by the time of the pageant. Miss contestants must be ages 19 to 28. There is a fee to participate, but Reyes said the fee may be made in payments. “The girls that sign up this week should be ready to participate in a photo shoot this weekend,” Reyes said.

ust the phrase “steak dinner” evokes something special, a meal elevated above the ordinary. Del Rio has several noteworthy choices for that fancy feast, whether it’s a birthday supper for a family member, a promotion celebration with close friends or a wedding rehearsal dinner. Here, in this border town, where two countries meet, the venerable steak takes on a unique culinary dimension. In fact, local chefs and cooks produce such plates that rival anything in the state. Cripple Creek. Manuel’s Steakhouse. Wright’s @ The Lake Steakhouse — All three offer culinary excursions that should be highlighted in Texas must dine places.

Cripple Creek and other local restaurants practice the ine art of cooking steaks, which is a large part of the cuisine of Del Rio. Reyes has been a part of the Miss Del Rio Pageant since 1999 and has served as pageant director for 16 years. She said she considers each of the girls like her surrogate daughters and said the pageant serves as not only an opportunity to represent the city, but can open doors for girls in a variety of ways. “Each pageant features up to $3,300 in scholarships that can be awarded. They may not pay for everything a girl needs when she goes to college, but every little bit helps,” Reyes said. “The one thing this pageant instills in these girls is confidence. And the experiences they gain through being a part will be something they’ll never forget. My ultimate goal for the girls who participate is for them to feel a little better about themselves than when they walked through that front door.” For more information on the pageant, or to register, please contact Reyes at 830703-0094 or email IGNCMissDelRio@yahoo.com

first try the informal events on a Saturday morning. Next month’s “Coffee with the Community” is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, at Skillet’s Restaurant, 2003 Veterans Blvd. “We’re going to try these events for four months, and hopefully, we’ll get some people to show up, and I’ll be happy to listen to what people have to say and to answer questions,” said Ryan. The superintendent said he didn’t want the events to be formal presentations to be about the Amistad National Recreation Area. “I wanted to go out into the community where people are and meet them there,” he said.
