The Inn was constructed during the Civil War era by James A. Brown, an attorney and graduate of West Virginia University. Mr. Brown was present in Richmond in 1861 when the South voted to secede from the Union. He, however, voted against secession and returned to help form the state of West Virginia. He fell in love with a beautiful girl from Baltimore, Maryland. They were married and the house was given to Isabel as a wedding present from her loving husband. However, they lived in the house for only one year. Isabel contracted small pox and soon died. James Brown became a Victorian mourner and would not allow anything of this lovely wife’s to be touched. Nothing was changed or moved. Even her sewing was just as she had left it, needle in the cloth and thimble nearby. Highlighting the exterior decoration of the house was the roof, in large letters of light slate was the word HOME. Through the years and change of owners, this was either removed or covered with new roofing. Much of the front part of the home has been restored to its original nature. There are a total of seven fireplaces in the Inn, three downstairs and four upstairs. The hearths and mantles have been refinished and restored to their original condition. After the turn of the century, the Brown’s sold the house. It remained a private resident until 1932 when J.D. “Happy” Everly and his mother began offering food and lodging to the public, thus began the tradition that continues today. In 1948, shortly after purchasing the Inn, the Silbaugh’s built the addition which houses the present dining rooms, kitchen and sleeping rooms. Through various owners: the Hartley’s, McKay’s and the Moore’s, the tradition of combining fine dining and comfortable lodging has remained the top priority. Today, the Inn remains a pleasant reminder of a former era, while still serving contemporary and delicious food. As your hosts, we strive to continue this tradition. Jean-Manuel & Deborah Guillot
