in the competition will be able to explore the wonderful world of classical Italian songs and opera arias and to test their talent in this challenging art form. This competition has earned a reputation as Michigan’s top classical singing contest for high school students. Please check-out the information in the Verdi Opera Theatre of Michigan’s website www. verdioperatheatre.com - click on Vocal Competition - regarding the List of Schools that have participated through the years, the Repertory Sample listing all the songs/arias performed by participants, and the posters showing photos and newspaper articles about many of the past winners. Several finalists and winners of this vocal competition are presently performing with various opera companies in the

USA and abroad, and one in particular, soprano Caitlin Lynch, winner of the 1998 edition of the competition, has made her debut at New York’s Metropolitan Opera in 2013, performing the role of Biancofiore in Riccardo Zandonai’s opera “Francesca da Rimini” and has subsequently returned there to perform in the world premiere of Nico Muhly’s opera “Two Boys”. The public is invited to attend this exciting annual event, to hear and to cheer on these outstanding young talents. For more information please contact John Zaretti, President of the Verdi Opera Theatre of Michigan, via e-mail at verdiopera@comcast.net, or by phone at (734) 5524236, or Barbara Smith, at the IACS, barb@iacsonline.com, (586) 2283030. Finding Your Roots, Italian Style 2 By Karen Mack Community Marketing Coordinator

If you have taken time to speak with your family elders, chances are that you have glean “jewels” from them as far as your lineage is concerned. It is now time to think about securing information from other sources. There are many local places that you can visit for information. Before you go wandering through-out the city looking for information on your relatives, have a plan. Know what you want to find out. “Finding out everything”, isn’t a plan. Be more specific. It will help you in your quest. As before, you can always expand your plan but it is hard to reign it in when it is so broad.

If you are second generation or more, you have relatives that lived in the U.S. Italians, like most ethnic groups, lived among their own. When they came to this country, they stayed with relatives. The questions that you have to ask are: who did they stay with? How long did they live there? Were they employed? The answer to these and more questions may be found in the census records. These records provide valuable clues to you. The answer to some of these questions may also uncover relatives that you didn’t know about. Italians, like other nationalities, joined Italian clubs based on where in Italy

they came from. They started their own newspapers, had their own schools, etc. Generally, speaking, if your lineage came from southern Italy or Sicily, your lineage probably went to Holy Family Church in Detroit. If you were from middle or northern Italy, your lineage probably went to San Francesco Church, once in Detroit but now in Clinton Township. Both churches still remain. Call to see if they have records of your ancestors. Before you start to join Ancestry or any other websites to find out information, look locally first. The following are places that may provide answers for your questions. Burton Historical Library: contains most of the records of Detroit. This includes census, American military draft information, marriage, birth, death, etc. They are on microfiche and are available for anyone to review. There is also a multitude of additional information provided here that you may find useful. 5201 Woodward 313833-1480 part of the main Detroit Public Library. A trip here is certainly worth it. Call for hours. Bloomfield Hills Michigan Family History Center: Part of the Mormon genealogical library 37425 Woodward Ave, Bloomfield Hills 248-647-5671. Call for hours. Good information. Roseville Michigan Family History Center: as above 16955 East 12 Mile Roseville 586-773-4560.

Mt Clemens Public Library: They have a genealogy library that is well regarded, especially if you are looking for information re Canada. 50 Cass Mt Clemens, 586-4696200 The above locations may provide you with the information that you are seeking. Don’t forget to also learn of the historical flavor of the time periods that you are researching. This information may not always help identify family members but it will give you a better understanding of the day as well as explain situations that you may encounter. This information gives dimension to your findings. Remember to record all that you do. This will prevent you from retracing your steps later. Visiting and compiling information will take time. However whatever time spent will be worthwhile when you find the answers that you are looking for. Make a plan and update it regularly. Once you’ve completed this task, you will be ready to go to the next step in your genealogy search. Message from the IACS President

SANDRA TORNBERG Thank you to all of the members who took time to vote in our Board of Directors election in January. 654 ballots were mailed out and 308 were returned. For the first time in several years, a true election was held, with 17 members nominated to fill 7 board positions. In addition, we filled 3 positions created by special circumstances. Incumbent board members Dr. Mike Aiello, Esther Beaudette, Mark Garagiola, Giovanni LoIacono and Joseph Ventimiglia were reelected to three-year terms, along with new members Antonio DiGiorgio and Mariano (Mario) Evola. Incumbent board member Anthony Apone and new members Giovanni Maniaci, and Rosanna Maniaci were elected to one-year terms. On January 26, 2016 the new Board of Directors convened for its first meeting and to elect a new president and executive committee for

2016. Giovanni LoIacono was a wonderful president for three consecutive years but according to our bylaws, could not be elected again. Two board members were nominated for president, and I am very proud to have been elected. My recommendations for executive committee were accepted and I am proud to announce the following one-year appointments: Enzo Paglia, treasurer; Clarice Squillace, recording secretary; Mario Evola, first vice-president; Domenico Ruggirello, second vice-president; Dr. Mike Aiello, third vice-president; and Giovanni Maniaci, fourth vice-president. Giovanni LoIacono remains on the executive committee as immediate past president. Our goals for 2016 are to continue the momentum created by Giovanni in the past three years. We will continue to focus on profitability and continuous improvement in our banquet operations. We are developing a plan for the renovation of our facility, beginning with new carpeting, which will be installed this month. In addition, we will focus on increasing our membership and offering more activities for our members. One of our goals is to increase the number of cultural activities at the center, such as concerts,

lectures, movies, etc. We will continue to develop offerings such as the popular Regional Dinners to introduce our culture and our center the community at large. Finally,

we will encourage and support the IACS Seniors Committee and the IACS Gioventu’. It is an exciting time for the Italian American

Cultural Society, and I am thrilled to be your new president! Sandra Tornberg IACS President

IACL “Guardian Angels” Raise Funds for St. Louis Center As a major benefactor for St. Louis Center in Chelsea, MI, the Italian American Club of Livonia held their 21st Annual “Guardian Angel” Dinner/Dance on Sunday January 24, 2016. The event began with a Mass in the lower level at noon attended by 100 people, and was celebrated by Fr. Enzo Addari, SdC., the Administrator of St. Louis Center. Approximately 225 people gathered for the dinner after Mass, and a plated meal featured chicken piccata, pasta, vegetables, and salad. The fruit trays and desserts were provided by Bahama Breeze, Be My Bakery, Dunia Sweets, Heritage Bakery, Kilwins, Joe’s Produce, and the 20 “Cookie Ladies” from the club. The events that were held during the day included a silent auction, treasure chest raffle, gift raffle, and live dance music from the group, “One Man Out.” Former Wayne County Executive Robert A. Ficano of Livonia was the recipient of the St. Louis Guanella Humanitarian Award for his support of St. Louis Center during his term as County Executive, his charitable work for the March of Dimes and the work of his charitable foundation for the youth of Wayne County. Cruise Planners and Azamara Club Cruises also presented a check to Fr. Enzo for $17,516, which were the profits from a “Dream Cruise” to Italy that took place in October 2015. The bulk of the funds raised from the IACL event came from an ad book that brought in nearly $15,000 in donations from local businesses to support the transportation program at St. Louis Center. Bill Brown Ford and Lou LaRiche Chevrolet were also corporate sponsors this year. The money raised will ensure that St. Louis Center continues to provide reliable, safe transportation for the needs of its residents in 2016. Il Presidente Mattarella in visita al centro NASA di Houston DI ALBERTO ZAMPIERON 13 FEBBRAIO 2016

Il Vice Presidente degli Stati Uniti Joe Biden accoglie a Washington il Presidente della Repubblica italiana Sergio Mattarella (Ph. Quirinale.it)

(ANSA).
