GIOVANNA ELISA MILANA
Festa della Repubblica Special Young Guest Growing up as an Italian, I always had a lot of pride in where I was from – my ancestors originally are from Custonaci. I was never afraid to say I was Sicilian. I loved the culture behind my ethnicity. My dad, being the son of an immigrant straight out of Sicily, he is the best cook I know. When I would come home from volleyball, there was always a freshly cooked meal ready for me, and it was always delicious. Family holidays are always the best because as Italians, everyone talks loud, and there is always great food! Playing first season of collegiate volleyball in the fall for the University of Maryland, a division 1 Big Ten school, first high school 1st team All-American to play at the University of Maryland. Some volleyball accolades include: Under Armour 1st team All-American, Miss Volleyball for the State of Michigan, Michigan Gatorade Player of the Year, named to volleyball magazine’s Fab 50, 15th ranked player in the 2016 class in the nation, won Romeo High School’s first state

The “Festa della Repubblica” is the Italian national holiday celebrated on the second day of June. It commemorates the institutional referendum of 1946 when the Italian population was called to decide on a form of government monarch or republic after World War II and the fall of Fascism. After 85 years of monarchy, with 12,717,923 votes for and 10,719,284 votes against, Italy became a Republic, and the monarchs of the House of Savoy were deposed and exiled. This is one of the most important Italian national holidays which, like July 14th in France, Storming of the Bastille and July 4th in the USA, Independence Day, celebrates the birth of a nation. The Council of Presidents, along with the Italian Consulate, COMITES, and The Italian American Cultural Society is honored to sponsor the 2016 Festa della Repubblica which will be held Sunday, June 5, 2016 at the Italian American Cultural Center in Clinton Township. We are presently in the process of planning for this year’s events. Your participation in the past is greatly appreciated and once again, we call upon your generosity and support by purchasing an advertisement in our program book. Below is an advertising contract listing ad sizes and prices. We would appreciate your response by May 15, 2016. The success of our fundraising efforts depends largely upon you. We hope that you will join us in celebration of this important event.

SALVADOR SALORT-PONS
DIRECTOR, PRESIDENT AND CEO Salvador Salort-Pons joined the Detroit Institute of Arts’ (DIA) curatorial division in 2008 as assistant curator of European paintings and served as head of the European art department since 2011, adding the role of executive director of Collection Strategies and Information in 2013. He also served as the Elizabeth and Allan Shelden Curator of European Paintings at the DIA and played a key role in the museum’s current strategic planning process. Salort-Pons was appointed director, president and CEO in October 2015, succeeding Graham W. J. Beal, who retired as director on June 30, 2015. With the tri-county millage in place and the City of Detroit’s bankruptcy successfully completed, Salort-Pons strongly believes the DIA is poised to move forward in engaging the museum’s local and regional communities as well as advancing its international profile. Trained at the DIA in the visitor centered approach and a proponent of it, Salort-Pons plans to continue building on it, making the DIA’s extraordinary art
collection relevant to broad and diverse audiences. He envisions the DIA as both a place for scholarly research and a as a leader in learning and interpretation, which will provide fresh knowledge, ample accessibility and opportunities to all the DIA’s various audiences. Ultimately, he envisions the DIA as the main square of the community where all will be welcomed, represented and united. Salort-Pons has organized the DIA exhibitions “Fakes, Forgeries and Mysteries,” and “Five Spanish Masterpieces” and was the inhouse curator for the show “Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus,” among others. As European art curator, Salort-Pons strengthened the DIA’s Spanish collection by acquiring important works by artists such as Alonso Cano, Juan Valdés Leal, Juan de Espinosa and Francisco Zurbarán. Prior to coming to Detroit, Salort-Pons was senior curator at the Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, assistant professor at the University of Madrid and
exhibition curator at the Memmo Foundation/Palazzo Ruspoli in Rome. While at the Memmo Foundation, he co-curated “Il trionfo del colore: Collezione Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza” (Rome, 2002) as well as “Velázquez” (Rome, 2001), which was the first monographic exhibition on the painter ever organized in Italy. Salort-Pons has been the recipient of a Rome Prize Fellowship at the Spanish Academy of Rome and a research fellow at the Royal College of Spain in Bologna (founded in 1364), the Getty Grant Program, the Medici Archive Project in Florence and Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome, among others. In addition to two books—”Velázquez en Italia” (Madrid, 2002) and “Velázquez” (Madrid, 2008)—Salort-Pons has published a number of scientific articles in British, Spanish and Italian journals and exhibition catalogues. A native of Madrid, he holds a master’s in geography and history (University of Madrid), a master’s in business administration (Cox School of Business, SMU) and a doctorate in the history of art (University of Bologna).

Get to know Detroit Institute of Arts Director Salvador Salort-Pons Updated schedule for popular “Director’s Cut” presentations As part of Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) Director Salvador Salort-Pons’ plans to engage with metro Detroiters, he has been out in the community giving a series of “Director’s Cut” talks. The talks are hosted by community organizations and are free. During the presentations, Salort-Pons talks about his background, the DIA’s history and collections—including some of his favorite works of art—and his vision for the museum. He also lets people know about the many programs people can enjoy, both inside and outside the museum, and encourages tri-county residents to take advantage of free general admission, a benefit of their investment in the DIA. Following the talk, the audience has the opportunity to ask questions and
PAGE 9 provide feedback. Salort-Pons was pleased at the positive response and level of audience engagement from the first two Director’s Cut events. “I enjoy getting out, sharing our vision for the DIA, and meeting people in the tri-county area,” said Salort-Pons. “I am truly interested in hearing what our tri-county residents think about and hope for the DIA’s role in the community.” The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), one of the premier art museums in the United States, is home to more than 60,000 works that comprise a multicultural survey of human creativity from ancient times through the 21st century. From the first Van Gogh painting to enter a U.S. museum (Self-Portrait, 1887), to Diego Rivera’s worldrenowned Detroit Industry murals (1932–33), the DIA’s collection is known for its quality, range and depth. The DIA’s mission is to create opportunities for all visitors to find personal meaning in art. Programs are made possible with support from residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

The celebrations and activities of the day will present opportunities to children with a variety of backgrounds to interact and learn about other cultures and traditions by performing their unique dances, songs, and experiencing many more attractions. The Festival aims to foster communal exchange, peace, fellowship, and cultural understanding among Michiganders, particularly children of diverse backgrounds. In 2015, the International Children’s Festival featured ethnic representation from more than 35 groups: Alba-
nia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bosnia, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Greece, Germany, Hungary, India, Iraq, Italy, Jordan, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Macedonia, Mexico, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Peru, Romania, Russia, South Korea, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, USA (2 groups), Uzbekistan, and Yemen. More than 400 children representing 22 different countries/ cultures attended the International Children’s Festival with their stage performances. The event attracted an audience of 1,500 people. The 2016 Festival promises to be another great event. In addition to the stage perfor-

INFORMATION ON THE 2016 COLUMBUS DAY CELEBRATION QUEEN PAGEANT for Contestants & Their Parents: The Columbus Day Celebration Queen Pageant has been prevalent in the Italian culture for over the past sixty years. This is an exceptional opportunity to help young ladies blossom into sophisticated and knowledgeable women. This pageant will help the contestants form permanent career skills paired with lifelong friendships made with the other participants and staff. This is an enjoyable event for all contestants, sponsors, and spectators. During the event, there will be phenomenal entertainment, food, and most importantly, a celebration of our Italian Heritage. Additionally, over the past two years the Italian American Chamber of Commerce has generously donated an educational scholarship worth $1,000 to the Queen of the Miss Columbus Day Pageant. The Columbus Day Celebration Queen Pageant will take place Sunday, June 26, 2016. It will be held at Freedom Hill Banquet Hall. The actual pageant will begin at 12 and conclude at 4. However, the interview portion of the pageant for the contestants will begin at 10:30 AM. Each participant is required to be at least 25% Italian. The categories for the pageant will include: personal interview, causal wear, eveningwear, and a talent portion. The talent portion of the program may consist of any skill
you possess from: singing, dance, playing of an instrument, gymnastics, dramatic/comedic prowess, poetry, virtually anything you wish to present. Contestants’ titles and the age groups for the titles are as follows: • Queen Isabella- 5 to 6 years of age • Little Miss Columbus7 to 11 years of age • Jr. Miss Columbus- 12 to 16 years of age • Miss Columbus Queen 17 to 20 years of age Furthermore, each contestant requires a sponsor. If you do not have a sponsor in mind, we can help provide you with one! The sponsor fee is $300.00. This investment covers all events for each contestant for the entire year. For instance, it will include her meals, sash, incidentals, and payment for the rented charter bus for her trip to Lansing. This Lansing trip gives the contestants an opportunity to be recognized by the State of Michigan. They each receive a proclamation from their State Representative for being a member of the Columbus Court. In addition, each club that sponsors a contestant will receive two dinner tickets to the Columbus Day Celebration Banquet that takes place in October. The Columbus Day Queens and her Court will be partaking in not only this pageant, but
they are invited to make appearances at multiple parades, festivals, and volunteer projects in the community throughout the year. Thus, commitment to this honorable extracurricular is key and obligatory. During such events, the contestants
will be instructed to wear sashes with their provided sponsor’s name written on it, along with the sash displaying the title won during the pageant. Overall, this is such a fun, momentous, and admirable way of celebrating our Italian heritage,
while developing into a well-rounded individual If you have any questions, please call or e-mail the Pageant Director, Sally Arredondo, at 586-2981492 or CDCCqueenpageant@gmail.com

EVENT CELEBRATING TIRIMESÙ

perform traditional folk songs.
On June 1, 2016 the IACS is proud to host a special evening of food, tradition and entertainment from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy. If you were fortunate enough to be with us on October 1, 2015 for our Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Dinner, you met Flavia Cosolo via a Skype session and heard the story of the origin of Tirimesù. We are proud to announce that Ms. Cosolo will be here in person at this event, where she will prepare the original Tirimesù recipe for the first time in the United States. In addition, the folklore group Coro Gruppo Costumi Tradizionali Bisiachi will be here from the town of Monfalcone, in the province of Gorizia, to
This beautiful venture started in June 2015 when Mauro Querio made a trip back to his hometown and met Flavia for the first time. He heard the story of her father Mario Cosolo’s Tirimesù first-hand from Flavia. From there they began a relationship that led to the dinner at the IACS last October and plans for her upcoming trip to the United States. The mayor of Rochester Catherine Aragona-Daldin became aware of this story and contacted the mayor of Monfalcone, Silvia Altran, to express her interest in the Italian town and to develop a relationship between the two cities. The mayor will host a reception for these distinguished guests at the Rochester City Hall at 11:00 AM on June 2. Please call 586-228-3030 for reservations for this great event.
A CAKE FIT FOR A KING Few people know the story of a meeting place that was one of the liveliest in our territory, an example of how 150 years of history can be contained in a recipe. However, in order to live and savor this experience together, we must go back in time. It was in 1850 that Antonio Cosolo opened a tavern in Pieris, in the province of Gorizia. Afterwards he decided to assign the license to his brother Giulio. The development of the Monfalcone shipyard brought new opportunities to the country and to the Cosolo family as well: they moved their business into a bigger building and renamed it
Later its management was handed down to Giulio’s son, Antonio, known as Toni to his friends. The First World War provided an interruption, but the post-war reconstruction and the development of the industry of the territory contributed to the expansion of the tavern into a hotel as well. It became a usual meeting place for customers and vacationers who also came from Trieste. Toni Cosolo’s family grew with Ivonne, Clara and Mario, the eldest son. At fourteen Mario was very keen on cooking and showed great qualities. At sixteen he started to work for Persona in Trieste, where he learned the secrets of pastry making. Then he carried out his military service as vice-Chef on the royal yacht “Savoia”, which belonged to the King of Italy, Vittorio Emmanuele. One day, just for entertainment, a competition was held among the cooking staff: they had to prepare the most delicious dessert in the shortest possible time using the only ingredients available in the galley. Mario won with a cake made of cooked egg cream served cold in a glass. It is from here that his ambitions and his thoughts became reality: the “Coachman Cup” was born. It was only in 1939, when Mario came back to Pieris that the Chef ’s secrets finally moved to the family kitchen and to the customers’ palates. At the end of the Second World War the
MAY 2016 Cosolo family resumed the activity of the “Trattoria The Coachman” and with the complicity of their customers the famous dessert acquired a new identity: it was renamed “Tirimesù”. Thanks to the economic boom and the new airport, Toni and Mario took the restaurant-hotel up to a new level of success. The garden under the pergola and the dance floor became a meeting place for the entertainment of the young and the not-so-young from Pieris and the neighboring villages. In the ‘60s Mario took over the management, with the collaboration of the chef Mario Pipani. They expanded slowly and added new furniture and, more and more often, they welcomed international customers. The restaurant “The Coachman” welcomed ministers, secretaries, politicians, businessmen and big names such as Tiberio Mitri, Miss Italy Fulvia Franco, Gino Bartali, Walter Chiari, Alida Kelly, Gianni Morandi, Jonny Dorelli and Catherine Spaak, Patty Pravo, Alighero Noschese, Achille D’Angelo known as the wizard of Naples, Maria Callas, Giuseppe Zigaina and Pier Paolo Pasolini during the filming of Medea. In short, through the history of this restaurant, whose management was handed down from father to son, for four generations of the Cosolo and Fusar family, we want to remember the story of a village, the story of a family, a passion for cooking, and the creation of a cake fit for a King.

FINDING YOUR ROOTS, ITALIAN STYLE 5 By Karen Mack Community Marketing Coordinator
When did your ancestors come to America? How did they come? Italians have been coming to America since Cristoforo Colombo made his voyage. But only a handful of Italians migrated from then till 1820. There were records kept for many of those years.
Some of the places that you may search for your ancestors are: Passenger and Immigration Lists Bibliogaphy 15381900 by P. William Filby, Italians to America: Lists of Passengers Arriving at U.S. Ports, 1880-1899 edited by Ira Glazier and W. William Filby.
There are two major time periods for the passenger lists. They were from 1565 to 1819 and from 1820 to 1954. The first period may be found in published books and periodicals. However, the latter are found in the central records in the National Archives. Most Italians came here in the second wave. While most of the records are available, some were lost or destroyed.
Perhaps when your ancestor came they went to France or another European country and then came to America. This was a common occurrence. Morton-Allen Directory of European Passenger Steamship Arrivals should be consulted because you may find the information that you are seeking, in there.
When looking for your ancestors that came from 1820-1891, look for them in the Customs Lists. For those after 1891, look for your ancestors in the Immigration List. In these lists, you will find: their name, age, sex, occupation, ability to read or write, last residence abroad, final destination in the U.S., whether or not they had a ticket to that destination, the amount of money that they have and nationality. They also added comments that we would find discriminatory today, such as: if they were impaired in any way, comments on their physical appearance, if the first impression by the Immigrant officers was a bad one…and why. These were observations only, made by the officers, but they were observations that introduced these immigrants to their new home county. The port of entry could be any American port. However, Baltimore, New York, Boston, New Orleans, Canada and Philadelphia were the main entry ports. You probably thought that all Italians came through New York and Ellis Island. You see now that wasn’t always the case.
On line, visit the Ellis Island website. As previously stated, not everyone came to New York. But if they did, they entered through Ellis Island. That site is : http://www. libertyellisfoundation.org/ passenger. Know that women traveling without their husbands, usually travelled under their maiden name. If they had children, the children will have the father’s name but the mother will use her maiden name. It is not uncommon to find your ancestor on more than one passenger lists with different dates. It was not uncommon for immigrants to travel back and forth from the old country. They were often called, “birds of passage”. Some of the reasons for this travelling were because the husband would come first, establish himself in America and then go back and bring his family. Another reason was, because the immigrants went back and forth when work became scarce in the old country. Passports were optional till 1941. Some naturalized citizens, after that date, applied for passports. This allowed them to travel back and forth
with greater ease. Contained on a passport would be the following information: birth date, birthplace, occupation, and a physical description. Photographs were added after 1914. Passport applications from 1791 to 1925 may be found in the National Archives and are available for review at the Family History Library…listed in the last issue. When searching for women, make sure that you check under their married and their maiden name. There are a number of genealogical databases available. Two that may be found at the Family History Library are • the International Genealogical Index ▷ contains events in the life of the individuals ▷ 1996 edition contains over 200 million names • the Ancestral File ▷ contains families and pedigrees ▷ infor mation is submitted by family members ▷ Other databases include: • POINT. POINT (pursuing our Italian names together) ▷ People have often distant cousins on this site.
• Leading Americans of Italian Descent in Massachusetts ▷ Contains biographical information on people • The Italians in Chicago: A Study of Americanization ▷ Contains biographical information on people • Nuovo dizionario dei comuni e frazioni di comni con le circonscrizioni amministrative ▷ New Dictionary of Towns and Hamlets with their administrative districts ▷ Film number at the Family History Library is 0795276 Since 1850, all males were to register with the military shortly before their 20th birthday at The Office of Conscription (registry degli Uffici di Leva). There were no exceptions. Registering didn’t mean that you were automat-
PAGE 17 ically drafted. These records were created by the military district. A province may have many such districts and you want to check all of them for your ancestor. In this record, you will find: birth town, birth date, parents’ names, and occupation, literate or not and a physical description. If the male was exempt from service, the reason would be noted. This may give you information into the family too. Karen Mack is the Community Liaison for the Mt Elliott Cemetery Association, which manages six cemeteries in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.
