Dear Friend, I’m writing to share good news about our efforts to get more support for Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers. I have been working very hard to get the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to fund care planning sessions for Alzheimer’s patients and their families under Medicare, and they have finally agreed to do so! This will effectively implement my HOPE for Alzheimer’s Act. This is a huge step forward, but we know there’s more work to be done, and I need your help. If you are willing to share the story of how you and your family have been impacted by Alzheimer’s, please take a few minutes and go to www.stabenow.senate.gov/story By sharing your story, you will help me build a strong case for more research dollars to find a cure and for additional measures to help families and caregivers. I hope you’ll consider sharing your story at www.stabenow.senate.gov/story Thank you for your continued advocacy in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Sincerely,

Debbie Stabenow United States Senator

MEMORIAL CEREMONY IN ADRIAN When he taught history, he would take his students on field trips to the crash site, where they would ask what had happened to the victims’ remains. “No one will ever have to ask, ‘Where are they?’ And no one will ever have to answer, ‘I don’t know,’ ” said Dr. Griffith, his voice full of emotion.

Fr. Enzo Addari blesses the gravesite and monument

The Wabash Railway Company refused to allow Fr. Francis Beccherini, who had traveled from San Francesco Church in Detroit, to say Mass for the victims of the train wreck that happened in Seneca, Michigan on November 27, 1901. However, on September 24, a warm, sunny day, Fr. Enzo Addari blessed the graves containing the victims’ remains and the glorious monument created by Sergio De Giusti to commemorate the gravesite. There were about two hundred people who participated in the beautiful ceremony at Oakwood Cemetery, including representatives of the Italian American community of metropolitan Detroit as well as citizens of Adrian and the surrounding areas. The monument is entitled Sogni Persi (“Lost Dreams”). Mr. De Giusti described the elements of the sculpture: the word “WABASH” the year “1901”, a female face covered by a funeral veil, crowned with the towers of San Gimigniamo, a railroad track surrounded by flames, and maple leaves to symbolize the city of Adrian. Dr. Maria Luisa Lapresa,

Consul of Italy in Detroit, thanked Adrian Mayor Jim Berryman and the community for their commitment to honoring the Italian lives that were lost so many years ago. She read a letter from the Consiglio Generale degli Italiani all’Estero (CGIE), which is reproduced on this page. Before the ceremony, many of the guests attended a brunch held at Siena Heights University. Mr. Bruno Maestri, Vice President for Government Relations and Corporate Communications for Norfolk Southern personally donated the cost of the brunch. Norfolk Southern operates the rails through Adrian, which were once part of the Wabash main line. Dr. Kyle Griffith is an assistant superintendent in the Lenawee Intermediate School District and former history teacher whose passionate interest led to the search for records of the unidentified victims’ burial site.

Mr. Berryman proclaimed, “Today starts a new chapter in the history of the 1901 events. The monument will serve as a reminder to all who visit this place that this country of opportunity came with the sacrifices of many.” It was a very emotional experience for all those in attendance. We are grateful to Mayor Jim Berryman and the people of Adrian for their dedication to honoring our countrymen who lost their lives so many years ago.

THE ITALIANS TAKE THE STATE CAPITOL AGAIN On October 5, a large group of Italians traveled to the State Capitol for the annual Columbus Day celebration. Known as the “Ramo Salerno Trip to Lansing, it was a fun as well as inspiring day as always. It was also bittersweet as Anthony Forlini was our host for the last time since he is term-limited this year. Thank you to Ramo and Anthony for organizing another wonderful day allowing us to celebrate our heritage.

FADM CELEBRATES SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS AND THE TREASURES OF ANCIENT ABRUZZO

FADM Treasurer Tonino Corsetti, Sandra Tornberg, Enzo Paglia

The Federazione Abruzzese del Michigan held its Festa Abruzzese on October 16; which event, the membership is introduced to the students who have been awarded scholarships. Display boards featured photos and information about Abruzzo’s most famous outdoor ruins, including Alba Fucens. Abruzzo’s ancient outdoor treasures are not as well known as those found in Rome, Sicily, and other locations, but are equally interesting and important. Christopher Chiaravalli and Annie-Marie Goddard were each awarded a $1000 college scholarship for 2016. Annie-Marie is a sophomore at Aquinas College, where she was selected to be a student ambassador. As student ambassador, she will represent the college at public functions and school events until her graduation. Her volunteer activities include Aquinas Alternative Spring Break in Kentucky, building homes for economically

impoverished families, and Aquinas Dance for Youth with Autism among many others. She carries a 3.6 average and is working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in May 2019. Annie-Marie was unable to attend the dinner because of a previous commitment but she sent a gracious letter thanking the members for their support. Her parents are Michael and Catherine Calvano- Goddard. Catherine’s family is from Alfedena (AQ). Christopher Chiaravalli attends the University of

Michigan College of Engineering where he carries a 3.4 average in Mechanical Engineering. He has been on the Dean’s Academic Honor List and has won numerous awards in engineering competitions. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout, which is achieved by only 5% of Boy Scouts. At U of M, he is also on the board of the Italian Club Italianissmo and tutors students of Italian. Christopher will graduate in May 2018. His parents are Bob and Kathy Chiaravalli. Bob’s parents came from Gagliano Aterno(AQ) and Secinaro (AQ). Bob is the president of the Gagliano Aterno Club.

NON SOLO ARTE, L’APPEAL DEL MADE IN ITALY Arte, cultura, letteratura, storia.

E in crescita esponenziale.
