Our First Year!

Available for adoption

It has been an extremely busy year for us. We have now saved 51 animals from high kill shelters and animal control. We couldn’t have done it without the support of people like you. We currently have seven dogs and five cats at Tank’s Retreat, and three of them will be attending the adoption event at the Southwest Florida Pet Festival on October 28th. The total for medical expenses in our first year was $18,828.43. Five of our dogs were heartworm positive, two had severe skin issues and only one was altered prior to coming into rescue. Two of them were severely abused and with love, medical care and patience have recovered emotionally and physically and have been adopted into their forever homes.

Happy Tails This happy story is about Scooter. He is a handsome black poodle from Miami. Scooter had suffered from a spinal injury and could only drag himself around. His poor paws were in terrible shape from the abrasions. After seeing Dr. Gurland and having xrays, his foster mom Patricia, took him home and began steroids and physical therapy. In a matter of weeks Scooter was able to walk again. He is now in a loving home in Punta Gorda and has a sister, who is an adorable Chihuahua!

Flower is from Sebring. When she came in to rescue, she was with four other kittens we pulled that were scheduled to be euthanized. She weighed less than a pound and the vet said she was only about four weeks old. She arrived alone and we are unsure what happened to her mother. It was very touch and go for a while and she had three hospitalizations but she is finally ready for a home of her own. Flower is a very loving kitten but will most likely remain a small cat. She is a little love that waits at the door for you and likes to be held. She also gets along great with our dogs. If you know someone looking for a loving kitty please tell them about Flower. Bud is from Clewiston and came into rescue when he was discovered in a kennel with no food or water after his owner had died. He had been in there so long, the grass had grown up over the top of the kennel. He was emaciated, fearful, and infested with fleas and other parasites. Bud was also heartworm positive and had a limp. He had resorted to eating rocks because he was hungry so his teeth are chipped.

Biscuit is also a wonderful success story and was also saved from Miami. This poor boy had a severe case of mange and was scheduled to be euthanized. At under a year old, he didn’t look like anyone had ever cared for him. After four months of treatment and quality food, he was ready for his first adoption event, where he found his family! He has a loving mom and dad in Englewood and they send regular updates and photos about all his adventures. Biscuitgoes to work with his mom, and gets to ride the golf cart and meet a variety of people and animals. He also goes to the dog park and has several new friends there.

Bud has received medical care and had a consult and x-rays for his knee. He doesn’t require surgery and has been neutered and is now heartworm negative. He loves giving kisses and has a very mellow personality. He loves having a comfy bed to lie in and wants to spend time with you. Bud is looking for someone to call his own. He is a smaller dog, but weighs about 35 pounds.

Our new medical foster Jewel

When I saw the picture of Jewel at the Orlando Shelter, I knew we had to help her. The poor girl

reminded me of Tank. She had been through so much and was still very sweet. She had infections in both eyes, parasites, a yeast infection on her skin, heartworms, was emaciated, has broken teeth and had previously had puppies at some point. The picture on the left is the day I picked her up from the shelter. The picture on the right is after a few weeks of medicated baths, antibiotics, and good nutrition. She had a visit with Dr. DeBolt and we found out she is a Sher Pei. Jewel is about two years old. She has completed her antibiotics and has started heartworm treatment. She will have her second treatment in three more weeks. After the second treatment she has to wait six months and test negative before she can get spayed, so she will be a long term foster. Jewel is on a special diet consisting of Blue Buffalo Grain Free Salmon and Sweet Potato with a pump of salmon oil for added dietary supplement as recommended. She is doing very well and gets to go out and socialize with Belle and Fiona. Her aunt Valerie has also taken her on an outing for ice cream and a trip to the pet store to get a new toy and treats. Valerie has a Shar Pei too and has been a ton of help. We shared video of the trip on our facebook page.

If you shop on amazon, please go to smile.amazon.com and choose us as your rescue. We then receive a donation. As with all rescues the medical expenses far exceed donations received. This 1st year has been an especially tough one. We pull from high kill shelters who don’t give the animals much of a chance to get adopted. I am in desperate need of monetary donations. You can also sponsor a dog or cat. Jewel could really use an angel to step up and help with her expenses. The cost of heartworm treatment is $500. I really appreciate everyone’s help this year and please continue to support this great cause. I have tried to have some fund raisers which have not been very successful.. If anyone has any ideas or would like to host a fundraiser, that would be wonderful! The cost of medical care alone for these dogs and cats has been much higher than anticipated. We are a 501c3 so donations are tax deductible. Checks can be mailed to Tanks’s Legacy PO BOX 3684 Placida, FL 33946.

The Loose Caboose Restaurant on Boca Grande is also a donation location. 941 964-0440

Our sincerest thanks We would like to say a huge thank you to all our medical fund donors. Without your support this would not have been possible. It has been a huge undertaking and the medical expenses have been much larger than anticipated. The shelters and animal control we work with don’t have the ability to do any vetting, so we don’t receive a medical history. Health issues are often not discovered until they are vetted at Lemon Bay. Together we have saved over 51 lives, and transported six others to rescues when we didn’t have room. Rescue is all about working together. We would also like to thank the Razorback’s and members of the Moose Rider’s for coming out tohelp repair fences and remove brush and trees so the dogs would have a large, safe play area. They love it! This all took place during the hottest months and we know how difficult the work was. They also delivered two months worth of food! We also have two angels named Russ and Stephanie. He owns Russel Melendy Lawn Care and volunteered his time to mow the yard. It was such a wonderful surprise and allowed me to spend more time with the dogs. If you’re looking for high quality lawn care we highly recommend contacting Russ at 941-7803752. Stephanie (his wife) has also brought dog food over and spends time socializing them. We have a facebook page where we share videos and photos of our dogs and cats. Please like us on facebook to stay up to date on what’s happening.

Nicole from J & N Pet Sitting watches the dogs and cats when I’m not home. She does a great job and the doggies love her. She also makes homemade treats for them.
