About Me My name is Orean Joseph and this is a collection of some of my work. In architecture I enjoy working with my hands and using a design approach to solve problems. I have always had a yearning to know how different components and materials can be put together to create a building, structure or place. Through my designs and solutions, I seek to come up with creative and practical resolves to problems. I aim to create a relationship between the people using the building, structure, or facility that I propose in designs. Through connections and relationships between building and environment on a human scale, make way for a functional, appealing and memorable experience.

Twin Cities Harbor The Twin Cities Harbor Study shows how the harbor can shape an attractive gateway for the cities of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph. In displaying how the harbor can be an asset to Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, it depicts how the harbor can support human and environmental health, while utilizing development concepts that are economically sustainable. The concepts shown in the 600 acre study area, are a collaborative effort undertaken by the Fall 2015 Urban Design Studio and various professional sub-consultants. Design solutions and findings are as a result of a four month period of research and planning geared towards providing a sustainable, uplifting and invigorating vision for Benton Harbor and St. Joseph.

Impact Speed (MPH)
35 MPH Kills
The impact of an average adult pedestrian on an automobile moving at 35 MPH results in an Accident Injury Severity that is indexed at 6 which is fatal. For elderly people that average is reached at 25MPH
Average Speed (MPH)
Wide Street Injure The number of injury accidents measurably increases as streets become wider. On average, there is a 485% increase injury in accidents when comparing a 24 ft street width with a 36 ft street width

The Curb-to-Curb width of streets has a direct impact on average operational speeds, but even the width of the street space from building face to building face is a significant factor in driving behavior.

disconnected and unsafe for pedestrians. The study also revealed how bike-able the area could be, but is currently unable to attain its full potential due to the uncomfortable and unsafe environment that presently exists. In an effort to create a more pedestrian friendly environment the aim was slow the speed of traffic to 25mph and lower. The

The Process The process of designing The Curatio Art Center was centered around integrative design. The aim was to create a building that was practical, functional and aesthetically pleasing. The premise principles and patterns along with, zoning and code restrictions determined the outcome of the final design.
3D Context Massing
The conceptual stage of the project studying how uses and other patterns and principles shape the form of the building. Attempting to find the most advantageous solution when functions and patters are combined.
Conceptual study of the combination of the tower and base of the building to achieve a functional, contextually aware and aesthetically pleasing building form.
Major functions such as retail, recreation and the center of integrative medicine and other public functions are located in the base of the building where they take advantage of real estate and provide ease of access
A further study of materials and creating a street frontage that is appealing and inviting to residents and members of the public.

Therapy, Renewal and Healing
Apartment units
The task of achieving optimum health, regaining strength and attaining full mobility and range of motion is often a steady, yet challenging and slow recovery process. This is not solely a mental task but a holistic effort of will power, a test of physical ability and determination, and the choice to improve, nourish and sustain our wellbeing. This outpatient

Energy Literacy and Building loads
Design Goals For High Performance Buildings Buildings are designed for People and those people are trying to accomplish a task whether it be raising a family, running an office or manufacturing a product. The building needs to keep people comfortable, efficient healthy and safe as they set about their task.
23 Wind and Airflow Analysis Wind speed varies with height and terrain, as elevation increases so does wind speed. As terrain becomes rougher the rate at which wind speed increases slows. This means that the wind speed in an open rural environment will increase with height much more quickly that the wind speed in a dense urban center.

Occupant Comfort Green design seeks to create buildings that keep people comfortable while minimizing negative environmental impacts. This is accomplished by the following:
Energy Systems
Material Use
Water Use
25 Large overhangs control and defuse natural illumination which improves daylighting and reduces building heat peak gain and reduces cooling requirements
Shading protecting against direct sunlight and excessive heat gain
Trees effectively placed around buildings can decrease air conditioner needs by 30% and can preserve 20-50% in power used for heating
Resource Use & Buildings Buildings use energy, materials, water and land to create the right environments for its occupants. The cost money and all have an environmental impact.
