INTRODUCING OCT’S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR:
We are beyond excited to introduce you to Jenn Hartmann Luck as OCT’s new Producing Artistic Director! Jenn joins us from Austin, TX with extensive knowledge and experience in the field of theater for young audiences. As an artist, musician, composer, and mom of 2, Jenn is ready to continue OCT’s mission of creating exceptional theatrical experiences for families to enjoy together.
Learn more about Jenn here!
WELCOME!
I first saw a live performance when I was five years old in Taiwan where I was born. My family took me to a Taiwanese street opera. I remember the vibrant magical costumes and the clash of instruments and voices. But most of all I loved the movement of the trained performers. Sometimes acrobatic with swords or lances; other instances, graceful royal steps gliding across the stage. After we moved to the States, it would be many decades before I would see all-Asians on stage together.
This first exposure gravitated me to become a theater artist. But creating theater in Oregon was often a lonely and difficult experience as an actor when you were usually the only person of color in the production. Through the years I’ve tried to create more opportunities for BIPOC actors and through co-founding Theatre Diaspora with Samson Syharath, I believe we started a movement to represent more Asian Americans on Portland stages as well as more BIPOC audience members. Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a milestone for me in Portland since I first moved here in 1989. I believe this production is the first all-Asian American local cast in a musical here.
With Minh Tran’s opera movement and Willow Zheng’s visual art, I also endeavor to bring cultural authenticity to this musical by Min Kahng based on a beloved book by Grace Lin. And you may recognize parts of Portland’s Chinatown gate and Lan Su Garden through John Kashiwabara’s detailed scenic design.
OCT and MediaRites also created partnerships with Lan Su, Portland Chinatown Museum and Northwest China Council. It was important to highlight and connect with Portland Chinese American community especially now after the pandemic and the anti-AAPI racism it brought with it.
But most of all, I hope young people will enjoy this story of a young girl on a heroic quest just as I did at age five in Taiwan watching the street opera.
Enjoy the show,
Dmae Lo Roberts
Land Acknowledgment
Every community owes its existence and vitality to those who came before us, and whose lives created the story that has led us to this moment now.
Oregon Children’s Theatre respectfully acknowledges that we are on the unceded traditional village sites of the Multnomah, Cowlitz, Clackamas, Kalapuya, Molalla and many others who made their homes along the Columbia River.
We respectfully acknowledge the stewards of the land and continue the practice of Land Acknowledgment to offer recognition, respect, and remind us of the true story of the people who were already here, and broaden our perspective on our collective history.
In this spirit, Oregon Children’s Theatre pays respect to their elders, past and present. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies that bring us together here today.

WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE MOON 7
We’re so happy you’re here! Whether this is your first time at a play, or you’ve seen many before, here are a few things to expect and ways to enjoy the show!
Be Attentive: Look and listen to the actors and musicians on stage. Notice how the costumes, scenery and music help tell the story. You may even be invited to sing along!
Be Careful: Remember that, during the performance, the lights in the theater will be dark, so if you need to move around it is best to go with a parent. Be safe by walking instead of running in the theater. Staying seated in your chair (or on a parent’s lap!) while keeping your hands and feet to yourself (not kicking the seat in front of you) will make sure everyone around you has a safe space to enjoy the show!
Be Kind by laughing when something is funny and applauding after songs! This lets the actors know you’re having a good time. We can also be kind by making sure the folks around us can see and hear the show. It’s easier for everyone to see and hear when we’re in our seats and listening carefully.
Remember that no food or drinks are allowed inside the theater during the performance, so enjoy your snacks outside before the show begins. If you feel overwhelmed and need to take a break, you can leave the theater at any time, just make sure you go safely with a parent. When you’re ready you can come back to see the rest of the show!
Parents, please remember that the video or audio recording of this performance by any means is strictly prohibited. Please turn off or silence any mobile devices that may make noise during the performance.

Be a Hero!
Each season, OCT serves over 120,000 people through our productions, classes, and in-school programming. Ensuring equitable access for young people, regardless of their background, is a priority for OCT. As a non-profit theatre company, all of our programming is possible because of the financial support of our donors, business sponsors, and grants from various foundations.
