Care is Crucial

s

IN INK preparing for your first tattoo By: Skyla Patton

Photos: Michael Davies

Springtime is here! With the end of the semester within sight, you can’t deny the adventure in the air. If you’re looking for a new way to spice up your life, try turning your body into art. No, that doesn’t mean you should pose as a human sculpture in the EMU or try out your feet as paintbrushes – not that those options aren’t open. The best way to do this? Get a tattoo!

After your tattoo is all finished and the artist cleans you up, they will always give you instructions on how to properly heal your new art (usually you’re given an instruction sheet to take home as well). It is VITAL that you follow those instructions! Artists have specific methods of healing their work based on their style, and paying close attention to this is the key to a healthy, clean-looking tattoo in the end. Keeping your skin properly hydrated (but not ‘soggy’) will prevent your tattoo from fading or healing incorrectly - be sure all of your products are unscented as well, added fragrances can lead to irritation and potential allergic reactions. Though it may be tempting, avoid listening to your friends’ instructions (yes, even the ones who already have tattoos) and by all means, don’t do what the internet tells you to. The safest way to care for a new tattoo is always to follow the instructions given to you by the artist!

While getting your first tat done can be intimidating, there’s actually nothing to fear. The process of inking your body can be a breeze if you prepare yourself properly. Here are five tips to help you power through your first ink job:

Drink Water – and Eat With your first time doing anything, it’s easy to feel nervous. When you walk into a tattoo parlor and hear the needles buzzing, it can set off your nerves! Our bodies can react to nervousness by making us feel ill; you might get dizzy or nauseous -- or just feel generally yucky. This feeling will eventually pass, but if you come in well-hydrated on a full stomach, it’s easier to calm your nerves and put your mind at ease. If you’re really worried, bring a bottle of water or Gatorade and a snack to munch on during your appointment.

Do Your Research Tattoos can be impulsive and hard to plan in advance, but it is crucial to plan ahead of time for a successful new piece! They may seem like a fun thing to do on a day you’re bored (and they are), but it is something that will be on you forever, and prepping for what you want is important -- even if it’s just the basics. Researching in advance can not only result in a much better tattoo, but prevents a potentially disastrous experience too -- there’s nothing worse than bad (permanent) decisions. Look into local shops and find out their resident artist’s specialties, find designs that catch your eye and identify potential locations on your body for the specific piece you want. This will make you more prepared for the experience, and help out your artist when you get there too!

Save Up The downside to a fantastic tattoo is the intimidating price tag it can carry. Although it may hurt your pocketbook to fork out a handful of cash to pay for your new art, keep in mind that you get what you pay for in a tattoo. Tattoo artists often work full-time with that ink needle. Their labor, all the materials required, the machinery and their precious time adds up to cost hanging over your new piece. With all that in mind, it actually seems like a bargain. Just remember that what you’re paying for is permanent, and thus an investment too.

Don’t Freak Out! Honestly, tattoos can seem scary. We’ve all heard the horror stories of inking gone horribly, hilariously wrong. On top of that, tattoos can evoke the fear of pain in general, especially when you’ve never done it before. Just relax! Everyone experiences things differently. Most of the time you’ll be so excited to get your shiny new tattoo that the needle won’t even phase you. Along with this, artists are trained in their art and are compassionate for your discomfort. If you need to take a break or have any questions, just let them know. Once it’s all over, you’ll have a piece of art to show off to your friends that will last you a lifetime. Bring a friend who’s ready to squeeze your hand, chew on some gum (to avoid clenching your jaw,) and get excited for your new tattoo. Remember -- no pain, no gain!

My first tattoo was on my forearm for my grandpa, and it’s on my forearm - it’s a bonsai tree. The elbow is really close to the bone, so that one really stung the most. If I could get a joke tattoo.. It would probably be on my calf, like Cuervo or something. It’s [the lighthouse] where I grew up in Canon beach, we would go there every weekend - it’s like home for me. - Jack McCollum (Lighthouse, forearm)

The mountains were my first tattoo - I had it done here in Eugene at High Priestess. It’s of the three sisters where I used to live by, and I also have two sisters who have it too. I would definitely get my cat as a joke tattoo! - Aly Lyda (Sisters Mountains, Upper back)

I had ‘daughter of the highest king’ on my ribs for my first tattoo - that one hurt the most too, out of four. The piece on my ankle was done at Robot in Portland, it’s a viking symbol that means ‘when there’s a will, there’s a way’ and my mom always used to say it growing up. I would get Leslie Knope’s face [as my joke tattoo]. - Kaitlin Kase (Symbol, Ankle)

BEST DRESSED:

LOOK THE PART FOR YOUR NEXT JOB By: Nicole Scopelliti

It’s May, so the pressure is on. Your roommate just snagged an internship for the summer, and your family members are wondering why you haven’t done the same. If you’re a senior, you’re just beginning to plunge into the bleakness of the post-grad job hunt. With so many other students searching for jobs and internships, it is imperative that you stand out amongst other competing applicants. A crisp, clean interview outfit can do just that. Boost your confidence and refine your style by investing in clothing that is sure to land you your dream career. Before diving head first into a full closet revamp, check out the tips below. Building a professional wardrobe can be made simple by purchasing a few staple items. For example, a black blazer can be styled in various ways, making it a versatile and practical piece of office attire.

PA G E 6

|

EMERALD ESSENTIALS

Neutral dresses, trousers and pencil skirts are also worthwhile buys for a young professional’s wardrobe, as they can be refreshed and restyled with belts and jackets. Black ballet flats, oxfords and loafers are stylish, yet comfortable shoe options for professionals on the go. Pro tip: maximize your outfit potential - if you can’t mix and match an item to make at least three office-appropriate outfits, then it’s not worth your money. Figure out the company’s dress code and dress one step above that expectation. You haven’t landed the job yet and you want to show that you’re serious about the position. If the office attire appears to be casual, dress in business casual attire. If the company expects their employees to wear business casual attire, attend your interview in business formal. Typically, business casual attire constitutes blazers, trousers and dress shirts. Business formal attire includes dresses and suits. If you’re not sure what the company’s dress code is, try conducting research online. If you’re unable to find that information, try reaching out to the

| M O N D AY, M AY 1 5 , 2 0 1 7

human resources recruiter at the company you are interviewing at. It is ideal to keep your outfit simple, but it’s not necessary to sacrifice your personal style. Add a personal touch to neutral colored suits and blazers by sporting a piece of statement jewelry or one of your favorite watches. Remember, you want to keep your outfit professional, so steer clear of crazy patterns and and overly bright colors - you want your personality to be the star of the show, not your purple leopard print pants. It’s also vital to wear clean and pressed clothes. If needed, visit a dry cleaner a few days before your interview to have your outfit pressed to perfection. For quality dry cleaning, I recommend Hi Tech Cleaners located at 100 E. 18th Ave. Hi Tech Cleaners is open from 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday. The shop is closed on Sunday. Shop smarter, not harder. You can purchase quality clothing without breaking the bank if you shop at the right places. I suggest building the foundation of your wardrobe at

H&M. H&M has an expansive array of professional attire for both men and women, including an impressive selection of basics and neutrals. Most importantly, the clothing is high-quality, fashion-forward and refreshingly affordable. H&M is located at Valley River Center, and is open from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Sunday. If you’re willing to pay a bit extra for quality pieces and brand name clothing, Nordstrom Rack is a great option. For young professionals with a keen eye for current fashion trends and style, Nordstrom Rack offers a wide selection of business casual to business formal pieces. I highly recommend its shoe department, especially if you’re in search of trendy, office-friendly shoes at a marked-down price. Nordstrom Rack is located at Oakway Center, and is open from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. on Sunday.

THE BUZZ ABOUT

BEES

By: Skyla Patton

Photos: Trevor Meyer

It’s a scary thought to think of a world without things that we love – especially food! Picturing life without honey, avocados, wine, pears… the horror! Unfortunately, this is a possible future we’re facing with the alarming rate bees are dying at. Studies have shown that over forty-four percent of the bee population

has died since 2015, and is continuing at a rapid speed. If the thought of existing without some of your favorite foods is too much to sit by and watch, you can help! Here are five ways to help out our pollinating friends this summer.

Plant Flowers Bees are losing habitat rapidly across the globe due to urbanization. This devastation can destroy entire colonies at a time. As simple as it may seem, providing a healthy gourmet for the bees in your area can make a huge difference in their population growth and success. Planting a small garden bed or even just a pot of flowers can provide a safe location for bees to explore, and it’s not exactly hard on the eyes either! Lilacs, mints and honeysuckle are all bee-favorites and very easy to maintain, even for the least garden-tending people out there.

Provide an Oasis Yes, as crazy as this may sound, bees need a pool to beat the heat just like the rest of us! Dehydration and heat exhaustion can happen to our insect friends just as easily as our pets and even us sometimes. Setting out a bird bath (or even just a bowl with water in it) in the shade of your yard can give bees the extra boost they need to bring the bacon back to the hive. If you want to get really nice about it, place some stones or pebbles inside of it that poke out of the water surface so they have somewhere to hang out, too!

Buy Local

Adopt a Hive

Although it may have an extra dollar or two tacked on, buying produce (and honey of course) from your local farms can make a huge difference in the life of a honeybee. Often you’re buying directly from a beekeeper, which guarantees not only some delicious honey, but also ensures you’re contributing to the continuation of the bee population. On top of this, buying local means you’re not buying from larger companies who frequently use the products that can be damaging to the bees. It may cost an extra dollar or two, but you’re helping save the bees!

If you’re not quite ready to strap on the space suit and maintain a hive on your own, you can do the next best thing and ‘adopt’ someone else’s! Many local beekeepers offer programs like these, where you can annually fund a beehive in exchange for raw honey – and the satisfaction you’re doing something awesome. The fee is usually nothing extreme, and sometimes you have the opportunity to visit your bees to see how they’re doing and learn more about the process.

Don’t Squish Them! As intimidating as they can be, don’t kill them when they invade your space. Honey Bees are vegetarians (yes, really) and will only sting if they feel violently threatened. If they’re bothering your soda can or buzzing past your head, just ignore them and they’ll continue on their way. They’re also big on smells, so often they’ll land on you just to sniff you out and then carry on with their day. They can smell pheromones, including the ones that humans release when they feel anger or fear – just stay still and let them do their thing! Learn the difference between wasps and honeybees so you know which ones to avoid and which ones to protect.

PREPARING FOR THE

SOLAR ECLIPSE By: Delaney Rea

PA G E 1 0

|

EMERALD ESSENTIALS

Photos: Michael Davies

| M O N D AY, M AY 1 5 , 2 0 1 7

This summer, a total solar eclipse will cross the country, enveloping it for mere seconds in utter darkness. For the first time in U.S. history, the eclipse will be visible exclusively in America. The eclipse will occur on August 21, 2017. For a few moments, parts of the nation will be completely enclosed in darkness as the sun becomes completely blocked out by the moon. All of North America will experience a partial eclipse, but only some states will get to witness the total eclipse – and Oregon will be one of the lucky states getting a glimpse at the total

eclipse. The state will also be a significant site of the eclipse because it is scheduled to begin its landfall near Salem. Not only is this the first time a total eclipse will be visible from only the continental U.S., the event hasn’t been visible in North America at all since 1979. A total solar eclipse, also known as a total eclipse of the sun, occurs when the moon passes through a rare trajectory. This path places the moon directly between the sun and the Earth, entirely covering the visible surface of the sun. The phenomenon is a brief one, however – the eclipse usually only lasts for around two minutes before the moon lets the sun peek through once more. Observers of the eclipse will only have this brief window to experience the event in its entirety. In Oregon, anticipation for the eclipse has been rampant. Camping sites reservations are being snatched up months in advance by those eager to see the eclipse from the nature of Oregon. Part of this enthusiasm

is due to our state’s advantageous eclipse viewing: Madras, Oregon is on the list of the premier viewing spots in the entire country. The town is located only a two-hour drive from Portland, which will make it a popular eclipse destination for people all over the state. While areas along the coast are a gamble due to the possibility of marine clouds, interior areas of the state are among the nation’s top weather prospects for late August. Another benefit of Madras viewing is its proximity to Mt. Jefferson. During the eclipse, the iconic mountain peak will fully darken 17 seconds before it reaches Madras itself. Seeing Jefferson fully blacked out by the eclipse before the surrounding area is hit is sure to be a memorable, aweinspiring sight. This eclipse may seem like a not-so-rare event, given that the phenomenon seems to occur not too infrequently. However, so long as you were born after 1979, this kind of eclipse is different than the ones you’ve seen or heard about

in your lifetime. A total eclipse is much different than a partial eclipse, which happens when the moon only obscures a single portion of the sun. That kind of eclipse can last up to two or three hours. If you want to camp out for the eclipse, it’s a good idea to book your reservation now. The best way to find camping sites available in Oregon is through the website ReserveAmerica. The site provides online campsite reservations for private, state and federal campgrounds throughout the United States. And through ReserveAmerica makes it easy to find sites, the tricky part is finding one that isn’t already booked; these reservations tend to be filled months in advance. Since the eclipse isn’t until August, you still have an opportunity to find your ideal spot to view the eclipse – but act fast if you plan on doing so. Remember, central Oregon is your best bet for clear skies on the night of the eclipse. Try to find sites located in the area around Madras for best viewing results.

SPRING DéCOR

BRINGING THE OUTDOORS INDOORS Photos and Story By: Kelsey Tidball

There’s nothing like springtime in Eugene. The flowers are in bloom, the trees turn pink with blossoms, and the sun starts to shine -finally.

We officially kiss a happy goodbye to rain boots, wet bike seats and soaked jeans. Life is finally good again.

The answer? We bring the outdoors inside!

Simple Spring Centerpiece:

There’s a plethora of ways to bring springtime inside, even when we can’t be outside enjoying it. Sometimes, a simple trip to the Dollar Tree or a garden supply store is enough to bring us months of springtime pleasure. Here are some DIY ideas for bringing the outdoors indoors to your home this spring.

But with classes, tiny apartments and a serious lack of time to actually spend outside enjoying this new world of spring, how does one make the best of springtime in Eugene? How can we bring those cheery, sunshine-y spring vibes into our daily lives? Aren’t we too busy studying, writing and trying to get as much sleep as we possibly can?

Dollar Tree Springtime Wreath Want to be reminded of springtime every time you unlock your front door? (Of course you do.) Try stopping by the closest craft supply store to pick up supplies for a DIY springtime wreath. For this simple, 5-minute DIY, you will need:

- One simple grapevine -

wreath (found either at the Dollar Tree or Walmart) Your favorite flowers or faux flowers (They have a nice selection at most Dollar

-

Trees – just make sure whatever you choose screams “spring”) Twine (brown or neutral twine looks best – whatever blends in best with the

grapevine)

- Scissors - Large Command™ hook for hanging

- Ribbon (optional)

Weave your flowers in and out of the grapevine wreath with twine until it is covered to your liking. Tie off the ends to secure each faux flower branch. You can either cover the entire wreath with flowers or just a section – whatever looks best to you! Once you’ve finished weaving, secure any loose bits with twine. Then, if you are so inclined, you can tie a nice ribbon around the top or bottom of the wreath to bring the look together. After it’s done, place Command™ hook on your front door, hang, and enjoy!

Indoor Herb Garden What’s better than a decoration that doubles as a helpful cooking tool? An indoor herb garden is the perfect way to bring the outdoors indoor, especially if you do not have a full-sized garden at your disposal. You “garden” can include any of your favorite herbs, but the most useful ones are often cilantro, basil, mint and parsley. For this quick DIY, all you will need is:

- Mason jars - Potting soil

- Soil cover rocks - Your favorite herbs (either

seeds or starter plants, though starter plants tend to grow better)

Simply place about 2 inches of soil cover rocks at the bottom of each jar and cover with soil. Then place either your seeds or plants in the jar and watch them grow! The herbs are perfect for the kitchen windowsill or counter, and are as pretty as they are useful. Not to mention they smell fantastic!

Simple Spring Centerpiece What says “springtime” better than fresh flowers? If you’re feeling crafty, you can find an old glass vase (any size works, but bigger is always better!) and create a spring-worthy centerpiece for a kitchen table, windowsill, island, bedside table or countertop. You will need:

- 1 glass vase (even a mason -

jar would suffice!) Food coloring (any brand will do) Elmer’s school glue

- A dish for mixing - Paintbrushes - An oven for baking

To tint the glass, mix your favorite spring food coloring shades with some Elmer’s glue (just enough to cover the inside of the vase), coat the inside of the vase, and then bake at around 175 degrees for about 20-30 minutes. The vase should come out looking like tinted glass. Then, find a bunch of your favorite spring flowers and place them in the vase for a nice splash of springtime color in any room.
