If you answered “A” more than the others, you’re probably over the Oregon rainy Halloween days. Simple DIY costumes out of your closet and a little halloween make-up will take you far. You could probably get away with some yoga pants, boots and a cozy sweater that matches your costume! Maybe try being your favorite animal (lions, deer and giraffes tend to be popular)! If gore is more up your alley, try zombie or skeleton make-up with simple black and white attire.

For your costume, you can utilize a dress or simple shorts and tank you already own and Pinterest it up! Some of our easy go-to costumes are mermaids, Barbie, Marilyn Monroe, Justin Timberlake and Wonder Woman. If you want to be a little more DIY, design yourself into your favorite emoji or alcohol bottle! If your friends are down, have each of you dress as salt, a lime and a tequila bottle (all you need are white, gold and green dresses. Then, you can print out an alcohol bottle logo, make a simple salt and lime poster to carry around or hang as a necklace!)

Harry Potter. Always.

Hocus Pocus, of course. Halloweentown

C is for “couple.” If you answered “C” repeatedly, you probably have serious FOMO and refuse to go solo on Halloween. That’s okay! Grab your S/O or a pal or two and try one of our favorite couple costumes. There are few things cuter than dressing up as a couple from your favorite Rom-Com (P.S. There might be spoilers ahead)! Try Pam and Jim from “The Office” or Ted and “The Mother” from How I Met Your Mother. If you’re a fan of cartoons and childhood nostalgia, try being Cosmo and Wanda, Lilo and Stitch, Spongebob and Patrick or get your whole gang together as Scooby Doo characters! Falling For Autumn by Skyla Patton

Autumn is here! Fall fans are rejoicing in the crisp air, big fluffy scarves and plethora of pumpkin spice products. Even if you’re more on the “bah-humbug” side of the aisle, there’s one thing that most of us love about the turn of the season: the leaves changing color! It’s always a joy to watch the trees morph into totally different palettes and shed their leaves into huge, beautiful piles of color. Check out these fun DIY projects for bringing this special moment and the season of fall into your home.

Leaf Banners This project is so easy and is such a great touch to every home. It’s almost a crime to not go out and do it. Go out and collect a handful of your favorite leaves that have transitioned and turned into beautiful gold or orange colors — make sure they’re in good shape and not decaying already. Pick up a paint pen of your choice — silver, white and other light colors look best — and get ready to channel your inner calligraphist. Paint words or phrases that mean something to you or that match the season, like grateful or hello, fall! Let the paint dry and use a thin string or twine to tie a knot around the stem of each leaf in chronological order — that’s so when you hang it up, it’s spelled correctly! Tie your fun new banner above the mantle or in your dorm room to spruce up the vibe.

Vase Centerpieces Pick up a clear glass vase of your choosing. I recommend picking up one from the local Dollar Tree. This project is limitless in its options and will bring a fabulous pop of color and festivity to any dining room or coffee table. First, clean the price tag off with some hot soap and water. Then pick up a large votive candle and secure it into the middle of the vase with a dab of glue, filling the sides with a topping of your choice: popular items are corn kernels, cinnamon sticks or coffee beans to give your home a wonderful aroma all day long. Another way to decorate this centerpiece is to skip the candle entirely and fill the vase with larger objects to create a sort of “hanging” effect: mini pumpkins, scented pinecones, or dried corn ears will give your dorm or apartment an immediate festive feel for little to no effort! Hanging Leaf Garland To finally fill that annoying open-looking part of your living room wall you can’t stop staring at, autumn leaves are here once again to save the day. This fun DIY is only three steps and will give you a festive decor piece that can please any eye. Select your favorite fall leaves from outside — again, clean and in good condition — and search for the straightest dead branch you can find — bonus points for knots in the wood or unique coloring. Pick up thin fishing line from a hardware store and cut pieces in varying lengths, not exceeding the height of the space you want to fill. Tie knots around the stems of the leaves so they hang upside down and then knot the opposite side of the line to the branch you picked out earlier. Once all your leaves are on, secure the branch at the top of the space with thumbtacks or wall hooks and there you have it! A gorgeous wall piece, hand crafted by the homeowner themselves and up for everyone to see.

Bling Pumpkins If you’re someone who just can’t get enough of pumpkin everything during the fall, this is the decor project for you. Spruce up any room in your house or add a fun pop to your dorm room with these easy to make blingbling pumpkins. Buy a handful of mardi gras beads and pick out your favorite squashes from the local pumpkin patches -- smaller ones work best for this project, like gourds or mini pumpkins! Paint a thin layer of cleardrying glue over the top quarter of the pumpkin. Start at the top closest to the stem, and lay the beads down in a spiral pattern across the top of the pumpkin. Once you run out of the glue portion of the pumpkin, repeat the process — do this slowly and in steps so the glue doesn’t dry before the beads are stuck on! Once you’re finished, hold the beads onto the pumpkin for a minute or two to make sure they’re really secure, and then you’re done. Place your new glittering pumpkin anywhere in the house or use it as a centerpiece on your table!

Oregon’s Best pumpkin patches

words by Delaney Rea photos by Sierra Pedro

Fall has officially…fallen. With the cooler air around you and the crunch of leaves beneath your feet, there’s an inescapable feeling brought on by the season. How do you take advantage of the changing weather? You guessed it, you’re headed straight to a pumpkin patch. With the year-long state of bountiful harvest that is Oregon, there’s no shortage of places to explore both near and far. Here’s your cheat sheet on the best pumpkin patches Oregon has to offer.

Johnson Farms

For the widest array of pumpkin varieties in the area, be sure to check out Johnson Farms. They simply have every kind of pumpkin you could ask for, including miniatures, pumpkins grown specifically for baking, and even 200-600 pound behemoth pumpkins. Not only that, but Johnson Farms also features Walt’s Wild Wagon Ride, where visitors hurl mini pumpkins at scarecrows and other targets as they hurtle through the pumpkin patch. Also featured are the pumpkin-launching bungee range and an enclosed greenhouse hay maze. The farm is open at 87933 Armitage Road in Eugene on Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Prices and more information can be found at JohnsonFarms.com.

Bella Organic

Spanning across 100 acres of Oregon’s gorgeous Sauvie Island, this certified-organic farm is entirely run on solar energy. When it comes to their pumpkin patch offerings, Bella Organic are known for their haunted corn maze. This year, the maze has been painstakingly shaped to resemble Portland’s own Damian Lillard. With nearly three miles worth of pathways, this maze is a real beast — it will take you at least an hour to escape. Bella also hosts duck races, animal viewing and hayrides to the patch, which are available daily and come at no charge. Bella is open at 16205 NW Gillihan Road in Portland from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and until 10 p.m. every Friday and Saturday during October. See their website for full event and pricing information at BellaOrganic.com. PA G E 6

The Pumpkin Patch

Based on the name alone, you could arguably stop your neverending search for wholesome fall activities here. After all, this is THE Pumpkin Patch. They offer hayrides, a hay pyramid, corn maze, and of course, quality pumpkin picking. Best of all, their activities are free. The Pumpkin Patch is located at 16511 NW Gillihan Road in Portland, is open at 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and can be found online at ThePumpkinPatch.com.

Thistledown Farms

Also located in Junction City, Thistledown Farm provide even more autumn pleasures. Their pumpkin patch is accessible by horse drawn wagon for just $3.75 per person. Thistledown is well known for their wide range of offerings made from harvested crops, including homemade apple cider donuts, warm apple cider, apples, winter squash, hazelnuts and other seasonal crops. Their grounds, located at 91455 River Road in Junction City, are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Lone Pine Farms Lone Pine Farms hosts a unique spin on the pumpkin patch experience with the Pumpkin Patch Express, which takes visitors on a guided tour through Lone Pine’s impressive selection of pumpkins. The array of seasonal festivities at Lone Pine Farm in October also includes a haunted corn maze, a locally harvested farmer’s market and a petting zoo. Lone Pine’s October events run from the beginning of the month through Halloween. The farm is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily at 91909 River Road in Junction City. Prices are available online at LonePineFarms.com.

Pumpkin Spice Up Your Life words and photos by Anna Glavash

Now is the time to consume as many pumpkin spiced things as possible — and we don’t just mean lattes. Here’s a few other things to try that include actual pumpkin. Trader Joe’s sells Organic Canned Pumpkin for only $1.99, which happens to be sourced from a family farm here in the Willamette Valley. Another $1.99 gets you their Pumpkin Pie Spice Ia.k.a. fall in a bottle) and you’re set to go. Here’s three dorm-friendly recipes and three fit for a real kitchen.

Pumpkin Spice Pudding

Pumpkin Mac & Cheese

Bubble tea, anyone? This recipe from Bob’s Red Mill uses the same tapioca pearls found in the popular beverage. You can use almond, soy or coconut milk for a vegan version. Top the dessert with whipped cream and chocolate syrup if you’re feeling fancy. Soak ¼ cup tapioca pearls in ½ cup milk overnight in fridge. DO NOT skip this step, it cuts prep time in half!

Have you tried pumpkin macaroni and cheese? Creamy cheese sauce and smooth golden pumpkin were meant to be together. No one said adding more cheese was a bad idea, either...

Using a bowl or container twice as big as the amount of all ingredients, stir in ½ tsp pumpkin spice, ¼ cup sugar, a pinch of salt and 1½ cup milk and microwave on high for 6 minutes. Do NOT let it boil over! Stir well, microwave for 2 more minutes, then stir in ¼ cup pumpkin and microwave for two more minutes. Trust me, it’s worth it. This pudding also keeps well in the fridge.

1 2 3

Microwave your favorite easy mac according to the directions (you might want to make more than one). Drain the leftover hot water into a separate bowl. To the hot water, add 2 tbsp of pumpkin per serving of mac, a pinch of salt and the cheese packet(s). Microwave for 1 minute. Stir, add the pasta and stir again. Finally, stir in your favorite cheese (we recommend cheddar, because orange). For an extra topping, try sprinkling on some of the spicy pumpkin seeds from the recipe below.

Pumpkin Butter What to do with the rest of your pumpkin puree? If you love apple butter, you will be obsessed with pumpkin butter.

1

2 3

Combine 1 cup pumpkin in a bowl with 1 tbsp lemon juice, 1 tbsp sugar (or maple syrup), 1 tsp of pumpkin spice and a pinch of salt. Microwave for 1 minute, stir and repeat Spread on toast with sliced apple. Add nut butter and more pumpkin spice to taste.Pumpkin butter is also delish on granola or oatmeal, over pancakes or waffles, or mixed into desserts.

Thai Pumpkin Soup

Pumpkin Muffins

This one’s super easy and so satisfying. All you really need is pumpkin, broth or bouillon, coconut milk and curry. Scale down if you must, but soup makes the best leftovers.

This recipe from thekitchn.com is what fall is all about. Though the recipe is slightly more involved, these muffins are SO worth it. Go ahead and preheat the oven to 350 degrees, you know you want to.

Curry paste: choose whichever one you like! I love Maesri, but all the flavors are awesome. Curry powder works here too. Heat 1 can pumpkin, and 1½ cups broth (or bouillon and water) in a medium saucepan. Stir in 1 tbsp curry paste and ½ can coconut milk. Bring to a simmer and enjoy. If you’re feeling fancy, you can add in any number of green veggies or top with scallions or cilantro. For a heartier meal, pour over rice and add in cooked tofu, chicken or whichever protein you prefer. Toasted pumpkin seeds are also great on top.

1

2 3 4

Whisk 1½ cup flour, 2 tsp baking powder, a pinch of salt, and 2+ tsp pumpkin spice in a medium bowl In a large bowl, beat 1+1/3 cup brown sugar and 6 tbsp butter until light and fluffy. It helps if the butter is room temp. Beat in 2 eggs, one at a time, then add 1+1/3 cup pumpkin and beat again. Stir in dry ingredients until just combined.

Spicy Pumpkin Seeds The best topping for pretty much anything that needs crunchy flavor bits. They’re also an addictive snack!

1 2 3

Just toss some raw pumpkin seeds with a little tamari (or soy sauce) and maple syrup. Use 1 tbsp of each per cup of seeds. Add a dash of cayenne pepper (or leave it off — they’re still so good), and spread on a baking sheet. Set your oven to 350 degrees and toast for 8-10 minutes or until they start to brown.

Set muffin papers in a 12-well muffin tin and divide batter evenly into wells. If you like, sprinkle some pumpkin seeds in the center of each muffin. Bake for 18-22 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

by Skyla Patton

Halloween addicts may have been meticulously planning their costume pick since November of last year, but some of us are just now realizing it’s October… and we have no plans. It can be difficult to pick something to dress up as for the popular holiday, let alone on such short notice — I mean come on, it’s once a year, it has to be good! Keep reading for some tricks and treats on how to put together a last minute costume, and what not to wear this Halloween.

Use what you have

Rather than rushing to the closest Halloween store in a panic, take a moment to shop in the most convenient store you’ll ever find — your own closet! Everything is free (well, it is now anyway) and the best part is you don’t even have to go anywhere to find stuff. When you really break it down, most costumes are just a combo of average pieces of clothing that most of us have in the back of our closet, or at least something close! Think about popular shows with easily-recognizable characters or well-known public figures: JFK and Jackie Kennedy, The Office or Seinfeld, Peanuts characters — the list goes on.

Thrifting is Key

If you searched and searched in the darkest depths of your closet and couldn’t seem to make anything work, the next best (and cheapest) option is to head to your local thrift stores or a chain store like Goodwill. Not only do thrift stores have a fabulous price range for all of us, they also have a reputation of holding some pretty crazy finds that could add on to even the most extravagant Halloween costumes. If you’re missing something for your own getup or just feel like throwing some stuff together, spending a few hours on a thrift shopping spree with your best friends can be a great way to pass the afternoon and check off ‘Halloween costume’ from your to-do list. Check out the local Goodwill Supercenter located at 1010 Green Acres Road (open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily) or head over to S.A.R.A’s treasures for a special treat: adoptable cats roaming around the store while you shop! The non-profit animal shelter provides a safe place for the animals to live while they wait for their forever home — what could be better than finding your perfect outfit and your perfect black cat for Halloween? Located on 817 River Road, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day of the week.

Less is More

For the minimalists out there, the mere thought of assembling an entire costume can seem like a task far too big to be willing to tackle. Even then, no one wants to be left out of the fun! There’s a ton of creative costumes to don on Hallow’s Eve that are made up of just one or two pieces and won’t hinder your good times. For example: Queen Bee — make a paper crown out of construction paper and glue pipe cleaner antennas on. Then there’s 50 Shades of Grey — wear as many different articles of gray clothing you can handle. Or you could try Risky Business; everybody knows this classic, and all you need is some sunglasses, a white button up, and socks to match! If you’re totally stumped, be sure to check out Halloween City located in the Valley River Center to search for any last-minute additions to your costume or simply to get your creative ideas flowing.

Don’t Get Offensive

While it’s by all means fun and games picking out something fun and festive to wear as a costume this October, remember that cultural appropriation is not fun nor a game. Avoid any costume that has a connection to a culture or racial stereotype — this is not a fine line! When picking your costume, ask yourself a few basic questions like this: does my costume include a significant piece of another culture? Am I utilizing a fake accent? Does my costume symbolize an ethnicity that is not my own? Keep this in mind to ensure that everyone has a fun, safe and spooktacular Halloween!

Pumpkin Decorating 101

The month of Halloween is upon us. Apparently some people call it October? The smell of nutmeg is in the air, Halloween costumes are trending on Pinterest and it’s the time to shine for everyone’s favorite scary-faced squash - the Jack O’Lantern. According to History.com, pumpkin carving originated in Ireland, and they used the plethora of turnips that grew there to ward off angry spirits. Pick up the biggest (or smallest — size is not everything!) pumpkin you can find at one of Eugene’s local farms and take it home to slice and dice. Check out these great tips for carving and creating your best porch pumpkin yet.

Wait… What should I do?

If you’re anything like me, you get so excited about picking your pumpkin out at the patch and taking it home that when you actually sit down, knife in hand, you draw a blank on what exactly to carve into your pumpkin this year. Fear not, even the most artistically gifted deal with writer's block every once in awhile. Many websites online offer free, printable templates to use on your pumpkin or give you an idea of what to shoot for. Don’t be afraid to utilize everyone’s favorite search engine, Pinterest, to get your creative juices flowing.

Tealight Candles are like, totally so not in right now.

Most of us grew up with our parents lighting a small tealight candle inside of our pumpkin once we’d finished to reveal a dim, glowing face grinning back at us. This definitely works, but often times the next evening you’ll discover a melted candle and a funky, burnt squash smell where the shining smile once was. Plus, your apartment may not allow for candles! There’s a few options besides candles to really light up your hard work! Check out local hardware stores for battery-powered LED lanterns or lights. For just a few dollars, your pumpkin will shine bright like a diamond. If your pumpkin happens to be near an outlet, cut a small notch in the top of the pumpkin and shove a bundle of string Christmas lights inside for an equally stunning effect.

Glow-In-The-Dark

As if Halloween isn’t spooky enough, this fun craft project will really light up the night with glow in the dark pumpkins. Using glow in the dark paint and your choice of stencil, color in the pumpkin. You can either outline the face and paint in a ghoulish smile or reverse it and paint the negative space. This way, the whole pumpkin glows, aside from it’s creepy eyes and grin. For a more free-form design, doodle on the pumpkin in whatever artistic way speaks to you. Pinterest users frequently make use of fun designs like polka dots, geometrical patterns or calligraphy to make their pumpkin one of a kind. There are a million different ways to decorate your pumpkin with this method, so be creative and explore your own spooky ideas.

Materials: Stencils or construction paper, glow in the dark paint, paintbrushes

Glitter, Glitter, Glitter!

This project is key for pleasing the inner glitter fanatic that hides Materials: in all of us. For the most aesthetically pleasing result, use a white Clear glue pumpkin with a flat-ish top. This is a messy project, so be sure to layer or liquid paint, the workspace with some old newspapers or a sheet before you get glitter or started. Smear on a layer of clear glue on the top of the pumpkin, almost like you’re icing the top of a cake — or, for an extra pop of thumbtacks, color, use paint instead and let it drip down the sides for a melting newspaper effect. Before it dries entirely, sprinkle your choice of glitter all over the news sticky parts of the pumpkin and shake the excess off onto the newspaper. Repeat this process of glitter dumping until it’s as sparkly and shiny as your heart desires. For a faster, mess-free version of this project, pick up a package of gold or silver thumbtacks from a craft store and pop them into your pumpkin of choice to replicate a polka dot sparkly look!

Channeling Picasso

This is the most open-ended form of pumpkin decorating, but it has Materials: limitless options! Grab your favorite paints and brushes and get to Paints, brushes, brainstorming with some pumpkins by your side. Pumpkin enthusiasts across the world have innovated the tradition of carving into painting. sponges, etc. The trend swept across social media and Pinterest boards alike, with each new painted pumpkin cooler than the last. Designs include lifelike skeletons, spiders with pipe cleaners as legs, popular cartoon characters and more! Explore Pinterest for even more fun pumpkin painting ideas.Think of your pumpkin as more of a canvas than a squash with this tactic. Experiment with different types and shapes of pumpkins, too — no pumpkin is created the same. A funky lump or odd color can make this project even more fun. You’ll have so many fun designs, you’ll want to put a pumpkin inside every nook and cranny in the house.
