fall in love with
aromatherapy Words and Photos by Julianna Bourjeaurd
The forest floor blushes with gold, crimson and orange while blue skies meet the crisp air. It is officially fall in Oregon, which means a progressing school year, piling to do lists and rising stress levels. Developing a routine that helps balance the mind is essential, especially as the rainy season nears. Here are some easy and affordable tricks to relax with the magic of aromatherapy.
orange & cinnamon simmer pot Skin routines not for you? A simmer pot will make your home smell like warm apple cider within minutes. While there are countless delicious concoctions, this American Patriette's version personifies cozy. 1 orange peel 2/4 cinnamon sticks 1 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. clove Combine ingredients into a small saucepan and add about an inch of water, or until partially covered. Place over stovetop on low heat. Water may need to be added every few hours, but the pot can be used for up to 3 days (or until scent fades).
chai pear sugar scrub If you're interested in a full on facial treatment that avoids the classic pumpkin spice aroma, this chai pear sugar scrub is the next step. 5 chai tea bags 1/2 pear (peeled & mashed) 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup grapeseed oil Dash of cinnamon Cut open tea bags and add contents into a bowl along with sugar, oil and cinnamon. Brown sugar is suggested for exfoliating less sensitive areas of the body, but granulated is better for the face. Prolong the scrub's shelf life by adding pear (the only perishable item) right before use. Softly scrub in circles where desired and enjoy new, moisturized skin!
diffusers Diffusers are another way to create a calming ambience. Available for purchase on Amazon or at local stores like Mountain Rose Herbs or Sundance Natural Foods, add a couple drops to create the perfect autumn medley for your home.
Warm Apple Pie
3 drops Ginger, 3 drops Cinnamon, 2 drops Clove
Fireside
4 drops Cypress, 2 drops Amber, 2 drops Clove
Fall Leaves
6 drops Orange, 1 drop Patchouli, 1 drop Ginger
rosemary & clove steamer If you want to do the bare minimum, but need to decompress, take a couple minutes with an herbal facial steam. It helps draw impurities to the skin's surface, opens pores and stimulates circulation. With cold season in full effect, this Hello Glow recipe also combats stuffed sinuses.
Hopefully these aromatherapy tips spice up your inspiration and help you welcome the new season inside your pad. Now grab a blanket, a cup of tea and relax.
1 tspn. rosemary (fresh or dried) 1 tspn. clove Pot of boiling water Heat safe bowl Towel (to cover your shoulders, head and bowl) Essential oils of your choice (optional) With a fresh face, boil water and transfer into a heat safe bowl. Add herbs and stir in essential oils if desired. Once mixed, place head safely above steam to avoid burns and cover with a towel. Take deep breaths for a few minutes and let nature's mixture release your tensions. M O N D A Y, O C T O B E R 2 2 , 2 0 1 8 | E M E R A L D E S S E N T I A L S | P A G E 5

Today’s Trends Encourage Self-Expression, Rebellion Words by Sophie Bange | Photos by Elle Wayt
In her recap of last month’s New York Fashion Week, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour noted, “There’s a lot of dark news, and as a reaction to that, we saw a lot of color.” Although the idea that fashion is reactionary is not a new sentiment, it is no less thought-provoking. Varying styles, fabrics and patterns have all been used as symbols of identity and allyship for innumerable social movements. Canfashion be a form of everyday defiance, on an individual level? If fashion has anything to do with self-expression, then yes. Having the courage to share who you are and what you believe in with the world is its own form of rebellion. The news may be dark, but it also shines a light on any threat to the status quo. Our ability to express defiance through fashion is reflected in this season’s trends.
Who says you have to have your business degree to look like a lady boss? Statement trousers may have kicked off last spring, but they aren’t going anywhere. The paper-bag waists with wrap-tie belts and flowy, wide legs you loved in the summer translate great into fall when paired with a turtleneck or chunky sweater. Bold stripes or cool plaids will give some extra pep to your step and make you feel that much more powerful. Alwaystrendy Buffalo Exchange is a great place to find patterned pants.
Is there any better time than right now for punky plaids? What other print could turn a piece of clothing into an in-your-face, anti-establishment statement? Plaid is everywhere, from classic red tartans, to bright yellows à la Cher Horowitz, and more muted black and white options. Other patterns like checkers and houndstooth make bold statements, too. If you’re more into the classics, St. Vinnie’s on 11th stocks up on flannels every fall. P A G E 1 0 | E M E R A L D E S S E N T I A L S | M O N D A Y, O C T O B E R 2 2 , 2 0 1 8
The most important thing to remember when considering a season’s trends is how you can make it your own. Whether it’s an entire outfit, a graphic t-shirt or a tiny rainbow flag pin, there is bravery in self-expression. Today, we might find comfort in the relationship between fashion and identity. In the words of Dr. Christine Shaw-Checinska, who studies the culture of clothing: “Fashion is a way of pushing back against invisibility, stereotyping, and the erasure of personhood.”
From Carhartt to Dickies, utility brands and their functional styles are seeping into streetwear. Overalls. Are. Everywhere. They’re durable, functional and look great on everyone. Not a fan of denim? Lucky for you, many brands now make overall styles in softer, more flowy fabrics - and in fun prints, too! Other utility styles you can try include heavy jackets, cargo pants, jumpsuits and fisherman caps. Utility brands are an easy find at St. Vinnie’s or Goodwill.
There’s no time like fall in Eugene to make you appreciate Mother Nature. Deep greens, warm yellows, burgundys and browns are floating off the trees, onto the ground, and into wardrobes. Compliment cozy colors with soft textured fabrics, like corduroy, chenille or velvet. You can even show your concern for the climate by choosing used clothing over new at one of Eugene’s many great thrift stores. decorating to
Words by Lucille Shadburne
for...
Halloween season is the time to celebrate gothic overturns: break out the dusty old skeleton stored in the attic (hopefully it’s fake), deck out those spiderwebs and exercise your best creepy scrawl writing. The possibilities for what you can do to show your Halloween spirit are endless, unless you’re limited by a student budget and small living quarters. Here are some ideas of how you can skirt around these obstacles in your Halloween decorating.
Head to Target
DIY’s More inspiration for fall decoration can be found just by looking at all the colors in the environment around you. There are so many things such as acorns or pinecones that you can put on display capture the spirit of fall, but they won’t require you to spend any money. If you’re making your own decorations, some easy ones are caution tape and putting out candy corn in bowls. The candy corn gives off a welcoming impression because it invites people inside to enjoy the sweets. Nicely colored leaves found on the ground are great for decoration as well — you can put those up around your room without having to pay a dime.
P A G E 1 6 | E M E R A L D E S S E N T I A L S | M O N D A Y, O C T O B E R 2 2 , 2 0 1 8
There are many affordable decorations to be found at the Target in Springfield. For those trying to make their apartment or dorm look spooky in the spirit of Halloween, Target sells bags of mini skulls, LED dewdrop lights and white stretch fake spider webs all for three dollars each. These decorations contribute a slightly creepy aesthetic, without getting too scary. All of this can be put up around a dorm or apartment without taking up excess space. Spiderwebs and lights can be strung up on the walls, while mini skulls are small enough to have the ability to sit on any available spaces on shelves.
Jog to Joanns! Decorating a dorm room can be difficult while making sure you aren’t putting up anything that offends your roommate or encroaches on their space. Dorm rooms are also significantly smaller than many normal living areas, and finding the space to put decorations can be a challenge. If you are someone who is looking for more general autumn decor, Amazon sells small apple gel window clings, and Joann’s often sells fall gel clings for even cheaper. Window clings are great decorations to use on the outside of your door to send out an inclusive and spirited message to your floormates. Joann’s offers a wide variety of options for fall decor, fall themed hand towels and wreaths entwined with fake fall leaves and twigs that vary in price. Fall is a great time to express your creativity through seasonal or spooky decorations, so why not take the chance to.

CHOCOLATE PUMPKIN BREAD Everything pumpkin screams fall, but adding chocolate makes it even sweeter. This fun, decorative treat has pumpkin, chocolate and even a cream cheese center to satisfy the sweetest sweet tooth. This recipe is not for beginners, but, it is delicious and worth the effort.
Fall
Comfort Foods
Words by Hilary Kearns
Crisp fall weather calls for all things cozy: hot apple cider, warm soups and of course, lots and lots of pumpkin spice. Here are four classic comfort foods for the season and how to make them or where to find them.
CREAMY GARLIC MASHED POTATOES Smooth and creamy, garlic mashed potatoes are the perfect side dish or entree for dinner. Follow this recipe for delicious potatoes that you will want to make for every holiday. Peel and dice potatoes and then place them in a large saucepan, add salt and cover with water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, and then reduce heat to a low boil. Cook until potatoes are soft enough to pull apart with a fork. Heat half-and-half and the garlic in a medium saucepan over medium heat until simmering. Remove from heat and set aside. Remove potatoes from the heat and drain the water. Mash them with a potato masher and add the garlic mixture and parmesan. Stir together. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.
Ingredients 3 ½ pounds of russet potatoes 2 cups of half-and-half 6 oz grated parmesan
2 tbsp kosher salt 6 cloves of garlic, crushed
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a baking pan with nonstick cooking spray and then line pan with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray again before setting pan aside. In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese with a mixer on medium until smooth. Add sugar, flour and the egg and mix until smooth. Set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, pumpkin pie spice, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. In a large bowl, whisk together the next five ingredients (pumpkin, brown sugar, butter, vanilla, egg). Add the flour mixture to the pumpkin combination and stir until combined. Spread into the pan. Spread the cream cheese mix on top of the pumpkin mixture. Use a thin spatula to swirl the mixtures together. Bake 15 to 18 minutes. Cool completely in pan. Freeze for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, for the chocolate bread, grease and flour 2 9 by 5 inch pans. In a large bowl, beat the sugars and butter together with a mixer until smooth. In a medium bowl, mix together the eggs and sour cream. In a separate large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add the wet and dry ingredients to the butter mixture, beating until well mixed. Using a 2 ½ inch pumpkin cookie cutter, cut about 18 pumpkins out of the pumpkin bread. Spread half of a cup of the chocolate batter in the bottom of each prepared loaf pan. Stand pumpkin cutouts close together lengthwise down the center of each pan. Carefully spread remaining chocolate batter over the pumpkin cutouts. Bake for 35 minutes. Cool in pans for 10 minutes. Loosen sides of pans and remove from pans. Cool completely. Wrap and chill overnight before serving.
Ingredients Pumpkin Bread 18 oz. package of cream cheese, softened ½ cup of granulated sugar 1 ½ cup of flour 2 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice ½ teaspoon baking powder 1 cup canned pumpkin ½ cup butter, melted Chocolate Bread 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup butter, softened 28 ounce containers sour cream 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla 1 tablespoon of flour ½ cup of granulated sugar ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup packed brown sugar 1 egg
1 cup packed brown sugar 4 eggs 3 ½ cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder
