All I want for Xmas ... Across campus, students are buckling their seatbelts, sharpening their pencils and preparing for the most dreaded week of the term: finals. Posters shouting encouraging words are plastered on the walls, student volunteers are shoving stress balls and snacks into your hands and you can’t help but feel a little overwhelmed. Whether you’re someone who’s been preparing for weeks or someone who has yet to buy their books, these five tips will help guide you through your tests and send you off on a sleigh ride into the holiday break.

1. Take Care of Yourself

First and foremost, it’s important to remember that your mental and physical health need to be prioritized in such a stressful time. Eating healthy meals regularly, getting sufficient amounts of sleep and keeping up on personal hygiene are all keys to ensuring your brain can function at it’s best. We’re not saying you have to go to the spa every day, but keeping your health up will help your test scores stay up too.

2. Use Mental Keywords

It may sound silly at first, but when it comes to key terms or specific things like names and dates, creating “mental shortcuts” can save you when you’re staring at a scantron and your memory is failing you. Rhymes, brief songs or even just creating similarities and connections between the things you need to remember and things you already know will help jog your memory. For example, if you need to remember a date, come up with something else that happened in that same year: you need to remember the space shuttle Columbia crashed in 2003, your little brother was born that year, and so on.

3. Utilize University Opportunities

The University may be the exact place you’re scared to go to, but there are tons of opportunities and spaces for you to destress or better prepare yourself for your finals on campus. Pay attention to the billboards for study sessions, stop by the Duck Nest for some hot tea or a break from studying. They also offer Peer Wellness Advocates who can help mellow you out or coach you through a particularly hard day, and also can often point you in the right direction for additional help.

4. Create a Study Schedule

Whether you’re an obsessive planner-lover or someone who forgets to eat breakfast every day, using a strict study schedule during finals week in your free time will help avoid procrastination and a mental overload. Keep in mind your full spectrum of responsibilities in making it. Do you have work that day? How much time will you realistically have to divvy up? Be sure to follow it closely, but provide yourself with plenty of breaks and outlets to de-stress in between as well.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Take a Break

Studying is crucial and everyone wants to be appropriately prepared for their finals, but it won’t be any use to you if you’re stretched too thin and your mental health takes a vacation. Taking breaks, enjoying leisurely activities and having a social life during finals week is nothing to be ashamed of and can actually help when it comes to sticking your nose in the book. Reward yourself for a good hour of studying, eat some snacks while you read and give yourself half an hour of Netflix after finishing a chapter — you’ll be okay!

Feel Good House Plants Words by Skyla Patton Photo Contributed by Jeff Sheldon

Stress levels are high, the weather is dreary and everyone is sneezing. You guessed it, it’s cold and flu season. A university is the perfect breeding ground for illnesses, especially when there’s no way to avoid lectures full of sniffling and coughing students when it’s dead week. While your cough drops and Emergen-C are locked and loaded, there’s are little-known saviors who can help ward off not only a case of the sads but also the worst of colds: house plants. Eugene has a plethora of nurseries waiting to fulfill your foliage dreams and desires, as well! Head over to Down to Earth for gardening gifts for your friends or a hand-painted pot for your new plant, open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 532 Olive Street. Fox Hollow Creek Nursery is just as inviting as they sound, and can offer anything from climbing plants to flowers. They are located at 833 West 11th Ave. and open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Check out these helpful greeneries to brighten up your home and your immune system.

Aloe Vera

The mother of all healing plants, aloe vera is almost limitless in the benefits it has to offer. Easy to keep alive and even easier to look at, this cactus beautifies your home while boosting your immunity to external illnesses and anxiety. This plant can also be periodically cut down and the interior gel is rich in amino acids, protein and important fatty acids which help with indigestion and allergies.

Philodendron

These vining plants make for a gorgeous addition to any home decor style, and are great for your mental and physical health. Philodendrons work to purify the air and remove formaldehyde, a chemical put off by most wood products in the home. Easy to maintain and adaptable to most environments, this plant will thrive in your kitchen or living room and brighten your mood.

Lavender

Already renowned for it’s decorative ability, this popular flower can boost your mood and beautify your home. Easy to maintain as a houseplant, lavender is used around the world for its therapeutic qualities and sweet aroma. Keeping one or two plants throughout your home can improve mood, help with restless sleep, and prevent infections.

Spider Plants

If you’re someone who struggles with allergies or a constantly stuffy nose during the winter, spider plants are the saviour you’ve been waiting for. Well known for their ability to cleanse toxins from the air, this foliage can remove carbon monoxide almost entirely from a room and help you breathe easy all day long. On top of this, they also have been said to help with seasonal depression disorder and anxiety.

St. John's Wort

You’ve probably seen this title in a box of tea or as an herb sold on the shelves, but the plant has been utilized as as an antidepressant for hundreds of years. Famous for it’s anti-inflammatory properties and ability to soothe mood disorders, you can’t go wrong with investing in a pot of this natural remedy. The herb itself can be broken down and utilized once it flowers, but simply keeping one in your home is beneficial for prevention of troubled sleeping, anxiety and common colds.

Must See

upcoming Movies Looking for some seasonal entertainment in Eugene this holiday season? There’s a whole host of films in store from now until the end of the year. These award-worthy films hitting the Bijou and Broadway Metro movie theaters will be sure to put you in the holiday spirit.

Now Playing

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: If you’re feeling in the mood

for some pitch-black comedy this season, look no further than Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The latest feature from button-pushing Irish director Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths), Billboards tells the story of a woman whose daughter’s unsolved murder pushes her to take extreme motivational efforts out on her local law enforcement. With a star-studded cast including Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell and Peter Dinklage, the film is said to not only be hilarious, but also an impressive performance showcase. Fair warning: if McDonagh’s previous efforts are any indication, this film may not be for those who are morally upstanding or faint of heart.

December 8th

The Disaster Artist: Hailing from everyone’s

favorite Hollywood multihyphenate James Franco, this comedy tells the making-of story of the infamous cult classic The-Room. For years, the aforementioned film has garnered a reputation for its unintentional comedy, with many even going so far to label it as the worst movie ever made. Franco has earned awards buzz for his for both his direction and his performance as The-Room’s director, Tommy Wiseau. Rather than simply parody the real Wiseau’s strange personality, Franco finds ways to make his story surprisingly poignant. The Disaster Artist also stars Seth Rogen and Dave Franco.

December 8th

Shape of Water:

Did you ever watch a classic monster movie and find yourself wishing the monster was a romantic lead instead of the marquee terror? Well, that’s the premise of The Shape of Water in a nutshell. From noted fantastical filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth) comes this critically-acclaimed romance between a lonely mute woman and a half-man, half-fish creature who’s trapped in a government laboratory. Despite the bizarre premise, the film has earned raves ahead of its release, with critics calling it a complex, beautiful and ultimately rewarding film experience. The Shape of Water stars Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon and Octavia Spencer.

December 15th

Star Wars:

I honestly have my doubts that this will truly be the last jedi that we see. Just wait and see if that premise holds up with 2029’s Star Wars Episode XXIV: Chewbacca’s Revenge. Unstoppable corporate-mandated franchising aside, The Last Jedi is the film everyone is waiting for this holiday season. When we finally catch up with the whole galactic gang from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, only one thing will be certain: lightsaber battles will happen, and they will still be pretty cool. Star Wars: (Obviously Not) The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Adam Driver.

December 22nd

Downsizing:

Here’s a solution to all of society’s problems, from climate crisis to the exorbitant costs of living - let’s just shrink ourselves! Alexander Payne’s (Sideways, The Descendants) latest film takes that concept and runs with it in every direction, resulting in the rare science fiction film that wears its beating, humanist heart on its sleeve. Focusing on a character played by Matt Damon who decides to undergo the life-altering self-shrinking process, Downsizing promises to be a comical satire that addresses topical issues of today through its own unique lens. The film also stars Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudeikis. M O N D AY, D E C E M B E R 4 , 2 0 1 7

Pie Recipes

from

Nothing feels more homey or nostalgic than homemade pie. But we all know we don’t have time to slave away in the kitchen all day. Luckily, there are ways to get that same homemade pie payoff without all the labor. Here are two of our favorite easy “homemade” pie recipes perfect for a winter weekend night. Words by Kelsey Tidball & Sierra Pedro Photo Contributed by Brooke Lark

Easy Raspberry Pie What you’ll need 2 pre-made pie crusts (Pillsbury or Betty Crocker) 3 cups raspberries (fresh or frozen) ¾ cup sugar 1 tbs. butter, melted Vanilla ice cream (for toppings)

To Make In a bowl, combine raspberries, sugar and butter. Stir well. Unwrap bottom crust and place onto a round 8-inch pie dish. Trim any edges of crust that may be spilling over the edge of the dish. Place raspberry mixture over the bottom crust. Roll remaining crust dough and cut into one-inch pieces. Then, layer pieces over each other, making a lattice pattern. Cover with foil, place pie on baking sheet, bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for an extra 15 minutes until the crust is golden. Remove from oven and let cool. When ready to eat, put a scoop of ice cream on top and enjoy!

Apple Crumble Pie For the Crumb Topping ½ cup flour ½ cup old-fashioned oats ½ cup brown sugar ½ tsp. baking powder ¼ tsp. ground cinnamon 1 dash of salt 1⁄3 cup unsalted butter, cut into pieces

For the Apple Filling 3-4 Granny Smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced 3 tablespoons butter, melted 2 tbs. flour 1 tbs. lemon juice 3 tbs. milk ½ tsp vanilla extract ¼ cup brown sugar ½ tsp ground cinnamon 1 dash of salt

To Make Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine all of the crumb topping ingredients in a medium bowl, mixing together with a fork. Combine the melted butter and flour until well-blended. Add the vanilla, lemon juice, and milk and mix well. Stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pour butter mixture over apples in an 8x8 pan. Mix to coat. Sprinkle crumb topping over the top of the apples. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Let cool and serve. M O N D AY, D E C E M B E R 4 , 2 0 1 7

tips to leaving for break Winter break is quickly approaching, and most of us are starting to think about being away from The Eug for a month or more. That seems like a long time, I know. Especially when half of your life and half of your belongings are now here, stored in your house or apartment. It can be tough to leave your second life behind for that long, but it can be easier when you know your home and your things will be kept safe during the break. Here are our top tips for leaving your house safely and happily over winter break. Words by Kelsey Tidball | Illustration by Devon Reed

1. Clean the house.

Clean the house before you leave. Really deepclean it. Do the floors and vacuum the carpets. I promise you’ll be so much happier coming back to a clean house rather than a dirty one.

2. Clean out the fridge.

For the same reasons as before, be sure to deep clean the fridge. Spend the week before the break trying to use up any perishable foods you may have on-hand and try not to buy too much that you know you can’t finish. Coming home to spoiled food would just be the worst.

3. Turn off the heat.

Make sure the heat is turned off before you leave. If no one is going to be home, why waste the money? Your housing company will thank you for this, too.

4. Lock up your bike.

Make sure to lock your bike in a secure place, or, better yet, to bring it inside the house. You’ll want to discourage thieves as much as you can. U-locks can be found at REI, Walmart, Target or Amazon. They’re fairly expensive ($25-$100 depending on size and brand), but buying a good one is completely worth it if it saves your bike.

5. Close the blinds.

Keep your blinds closed and your windows locked. This will further discourage potential thieves. If they can’t see in, they probably won’t be tempted to come in.

6. Leave on a light.

Try to leave a porchlight or a hall light on. It will look more like you’ve been home if the house isn’t dark 24/7.

7. Stop the mail.

Contact the post office and consider putting a hold on your mail. A month’s worth of mail can accumulate quickly and your mailbox may not be able to hold all of that.

8. Unplug Electronics.

Unplug all electronics. This includes your TV, lamps, chargers, hairdryers, coffee makers and toasters. It will save you some money and help prevent against fire-related accidents.

9. Befriend a neighbor.

Ask around to see if any of your neighbors are staying in town. If they are, ask them to keep an eye on things. Exchange contact information so you can check in every once in a while or ask them to bring in that Amazon package you forgot you ordered until it was too late.

10. Leave the faucets dripping.

It can get really cold in Eugene over winter break, and the pipes can freeze and cause all sorts of issues. To prevent this, leave your kitchen sink and bathroom faucet dripping just slightly while you’re gone.
