Letter from the Editor

How is it already week four? Winter term is going by fast! Take a moment to relax and enjoy some of the fantastic resources that UO has to offer. Maybe you are looking for a movie you can’t watch on any streaming service, look no further than knight library. UO libraries are great study spots, but they also offer so many fun things. If you need a place to relax on campus, go to the Duck Nest in the E.M.U. Perhaps you want to go to the gym more often. Look no further than the classes at the REC. Cheers to having a successful winter term!

REC Classes

Written by: John Ofstedal | Designed & Illustrated by: Griffin Forti Whether you’re looking for a PE class to fill out your degree or want to build a skill with some structured exercise, the UO course catalog has plenty to discover. Here are some PE & Rec recs straight from my personal experience. I’ve found taking classes with a friend is a great way to bond and start mastering a new hobby or passion. It’s also a fun way to get out and meet folks with similar interests. Don’t forget that you can take classes for no credit by communicating with the instructor, often for less than $100.

Bouldering Bouldering 1 is one of the most popular rec classes among UO Students. It helped me step up my game as a climber with biweekly classes which were as fun as they were challenging. I had plenty of experience hitting the wall with my friends for a casual workout before taking the class, but I didn’t know just how much I had to learn about form and technique. You’ll learn to harness your balance and strength on the wall from instructor Andreas Rosenburg, who has just as much fun as the students teaching the class!

Salsa & other dance classes The most unforgettable class I’ve taken at UO was Salsa. Taught by the ever-affable Florabelle Moses, Salsa relieved my jam-packed schedule by loosening my hips two mornings a week to a mix of Latin grooves sure to boost your mojo. While ever-popular Hip-Hop classes are quick to fill up term after term, Salsa delivers a low-stakes, positive, and friendly atmosphere that, combined with Latin melodies makes for a party of movement that will get even the least capable dancers off the wall.

Beginner & Intermediate Yoga Whether you’re a certified grade A beefcake or a busy student in need of a breather, chances are that you aren’t stretching nearly enough. Yoga is one of the world’s most widely appreciated ways of conditioning your body and mind with over 5,000 years of history, and that’s partly thanks to its accessibility to newcomers. If you’re feeling overwhelmed picking a rec class, you can’t go wrong with beginner yoga.

Vinyasa Flow Yoga Hands-down most healing class I’ve taken, Vinyasa Flow Yoga, is sure to nourish your soul and occasionally push you to your limits. The constant motion of Vinyasa Yoga will activate muscles you didn’t know you had and leave you feeling brand new. While this class left very few of my chakras closed, it is worth noting that you should have some prior yoga experience before showing up with your mat.

If you don’t see anything that interests you from my picks, check out the course catalog. They have all types of options including martial arts, backpacking, pickleball, and more!

De-stress In The

Duck Nest Wellness Center

Written by Samantha Sobel | Designed by Spencer So

Now that winter term is in full swing and the snow has finally fallen, students are likely to struggle with seasonal depression. It’s normal to feel unmotivated when the clouds cover the sun and the weather makes it a hassle to go out. You are never alone in those feelings and there are plenty of excellent resources on campus to help you prioritize your well-being. One of the best free resources to help you de-stress on campus is the Duck Nest. The Duck Nest is known for being a wellness center devoted to helping students on their journey with self care and balancing the difficulties of college life. Conveniently located on the ground floor in the back of the EMU, The Duck Nest is far enough from the chaos to provide a quiet sanctuary for you to unwind. It’s also led by Peer Wellness Facilitators, who are students that can connect you to other resources on campus as needed. Designed to calm your nervous system, The Duck Nest is decorated with fairy lights, laced with scents of eucalyptus, and filled with bean bag chairs for you to get comfy. With so many cute mugs to choose from, it’ll be hard to resist the urge to make a cup of tea and start a puzzle. Everything you need to recharge is at your fingertips the second you walk in the door. They even have a nap room if you need to get in a quick snooze before your next class.

Not only does The Duck Nest give you the space to connect with yourself, but it gives you the opportunity to connect with others through workshops, classes, and daily activities. A huge part of The Duck Nest is creating a calming space with a sense of community on campus where everyone is welcome. As long as you have your student ID, you can come visit anytime Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. The Duck Nest offers one-on-one sessions with Peer Wellness Facilitators, who are qualified students who can relate to the struggles of college, providing peerto-peer support. These students promote self balance through mental, physical, and sexual well-being programing. The Duck Nest even offers food security resources, safer sex supplies, financial aid information, and educational presentations. There are plenty of resources around campus to help you get out of your seasonal depression, so don’t give up on getting out of a rut. Find a new happy place and reconnect with yourself in the Duck Nest. Put the time aside to prioritize your wellbeing amidst all the college stress. The Nest will be waiting for you whenever you’re ready. To hear about upcoming events and join the community, follow @uo_ducknest on Instagram.
