pumpkin pienearby Words By Lucille Shadburne Photos By Lauren Bruce Pumpkin pie is something that many people look forward to after the dreamy days of summer dwindle away. It’s not just the delectable taste that draws them in, but also the association that most people tend to have with the food. Pumpkin pie has been a traditional addition to the Thanksgiving dinner for years; when people get a whiff of tangy pumpkin, we are often reminded of the time we spent pleasantly with our loved ones gathered around a table and laughing over all the stories being shared—truly feeling connected to a group of people. Since not all of us can be with our families or friends during the holidays, or we may not be the best chefs, we must search for our precious pie elsewhere. Here are the top 3 local options for snagging that classic pumpkin pie treat.

most classic The pumpkin pie at this fine establishment can only be described as hearty and delicious. The crust is a little denser, but the taste is not too sweet or too bready. It pairs nicely with the creamy, solid inside of the pie. The taste of the pumpkin isn’t too overwhelming, and neither is the tang from the spices mixed in. It is the sort of pie that you would be tempted to return to for more and reminds you of the classic pumpkin pies you’ve been dreaming of.

most inclusive This may seem like an odd thing to award for a pie, but it is an honorable title to hold. This Patisserie deserves all the credit for the options they make available to their customers in their pumpkin pie department. Not every bakery can pull off making vegan or gluten free pies, let alone pies that are made for people who are both vegan and gluten free, and do it well. You hardly even notice a difference, but time and effort they put into making all such options available to their customers shouldn’t go unrecognized; not to mention the delectable pumpkin pie that is to die for. Plus, Sweet Life earns bonus points for being a female and sister started business.

most authentic At New Day Bakery, they are known for running out of pumpkin pie in the morning soon after finishing preparing it, so make sure you get there early! People cannot wait to get that slice of pumpkin sweetness. This pie has a little bit more tangible flavor of spices, cinnamon romancing the ginger and nutmeg to enhance the rustic vibe of the dessert. The pie here is not too thick, and the flavor will most certainly satisfy your taste buds when craving that taste of holiday cheer. This pumpkin pie will ring your taste buds and satisfy that seasonal craving. 6

re you tired of the same bar crawl every weekend? If so, this party on a bike experience may be exactly what you’ve been searching for. Pacific Pub Cycle, based in Eugene, Oregon, is a bike tour that shows you the brewery, pub, restaurant, wine cellar and arcade scene in a whole new way. Since the beginning of 2019, the company has seen new ownership and a lot of success. New owner, Cindy Ingram, rightfully boasts about booking 250 tours in her first year of ownership and strives to advertise the inclusivity of their business. Pacific Pub Cycle is becoming a wellknown contributor to the Eugene community. Not only do they bring business to local grub joints, they’ve also begun supporting nonprofits in Eugene, such as Food for Lane County, HIV Alliance, Trans*Ponder, White Bird Clinic and so many more. Booking with Pacific Pub Cycle is customizable and simple because you can do it all online at pacificpubcycle. com. Customers have the option of two different riding options to suit their needs and several different tour options to appeal to different preferences. All tours can go through the Whiteaker and Market District.

The first riding option is “the Big Bike.” This one is perfect for 18+ individuals, and it seats groups of 8-14 people. It costs $350 to rent or $25 per person with a full group of 14. The Big Bike is adorned with a vibrant mural thanks to the generosity of the City of Eugene Cultural Services, Urban Canvas Program. Pacific Pub cycle commissioned Whiteaker artist Wayde Love who created a mountainous landscape reminiscent of the Pacific North West. The second option, the Meeting Bike, was newly renovated with a mural and large umbrella so you can still enjoy a bike tour on those rainy Oregon days. The new design was recently unveiled on November 1st. This bike seats 2-6 individuals and has an age minimum of twelve years old. It costs $200 to rent, which is only $33 per person with a full group of 6. For those extra-large groups, there is an option to rent both bikes simultaneously with a $50 discount. This is a perfect option for wedding parties, birthday parties, family reunions and graduation parties. If you’re interested in booking for graduation season be sure to do so as soon as possible — it’s their busiest time of the year!

While all tours begin and end at Wine Cellars (unless requested otherwise,) there are several different themed tours to choose from. For example, the ‘Beer! Beer! Beer! We Love Beer!’ tour is a 1.1mile bike ride which includes stops at Ninkasi Beer Tasting Room, Hop Valley Brewing and Oakshire Brewing Public House. If beer isn’t your preference, check out their ‘Red, Red, Wine, You Make Me Feel So Fine’ tour. For minors, the ‘Fun and Games (Underage and Sober Tour)’ is a 2.4-mile bike ride that takes you to Wheel APizza, Blairalley Vintage Arcade and Vanilla Jill’s Scoops and Soups. This option is perfect for birthday parties and family-friendly events. A few important things to keep in mind before going on the tour: only the licensed driver can pilot the bike, no drinking or smoking on the bike, stay on the bike while it’s in motion and don’t forget to tip your driver after the tour! If you’re not sure which of these tours is best for you, choose the “I don’t know yet,” option if you’re booking online. Then send Pacific Pub Cycle an email at info@pacificpubcycle.com and someone will help you build the perfect tour!

good food, good mood. food cart options for any time of day Words & Photos by Skylar Anderson With just one look around Eugene, you’ll notice that street food culture is everywhere. Food carts and trucks line up on the streets, set up in parking lots and even hide in the corners where only the locals know about. These places serve everything from sizzling hot breakfast to tasty dinner grub; check out this list for must-stop spots for any time of day.

breakfast.

location: 394 Blair Blvd. Eugene, OR hours: Mon - Sat 8a-8p -closed sundaysfood type: Mexican

nelson’s taqueria

Situated in the parking lot of the Dew Drop Inn, this tiny taqueria packs a punch with its fresh flavor and generous portions. This is one of the few food carts in Eugene that opens early, giving you the chance to explore its delicious breakfast options. Take a bite out of one of their well-known breakfast burritos: fluffy eggs, fried potatoes and oozy cheese with your choice of meat all wrapped up in a warm tortilla; or dip into their Breakfast Plate, piled high with tasty eggs, potatoes, the meat of your choice and traditional beans and rice. Both dishes are sure to satisfy that morning hunger, and that breakfast burrito can be a perfect grab-and-go option for your morning commute to school or work. Bonus! Breakfast is served all day, which means you can enjoy these yummy dishes at any time before closing.

lunch. viva! vegetarian grill

location: 1171 Wilamette St. Eugene, OR hours: Mon - Sat 11a-5p -closed sundaysfood type: Vegetarian American

Right across the street from 13th and Olive sits a quaint and unique eatery that dishes out classic comfort food with a twist! Everything on the menu is vegan-friendly — but don’t let that deter you away from the delectable bites this place serves up. One of the most popular items on the menu is the Vegan Cheesesteak: delicious spiced tofu “steak” fried up with grilled onions and a rich sweet sauce, placed on a fresh bun with a smothering of flavorful cashew cheese sauce on top. If you’re new to vegetarian/vegan cuisine, another great dish to get you started would be the Falafel: seasoned chickpea fritters deep-fried to perfection, cilantro-lime coleslaw and sliced cucumbers wrapped up in a toasty flatbread with the same cashew cheese sauce generously squirted on top. The affordable prices are the icing on the cake for these delicious options.

location: 1905 Agate St. Eugene, OR hours: Tues - Fri 6p-9p -closed sat - mon food type: Hawaiian

dinner.

every day kine grindz from hawaii

Parked in the auto mechanic lot across from Prince Pucklers, this popular food truck doles out traditional Hawaiian eats with a rotating menu at that. On Tuesdays through Fridays, this place is hoppin’ with students and locals who come to see the specialty dish for the day. But its regular menu reigns supreme due to simple, authentic and ‘way too good to be true’ food. A favored dish is the Teriyaki Chicken: tasty marinated chicken in a sweet homemade teriyaki sauce grilled and served with rice and mac salad on the side. Or if you’re feeling a bit more hungry, go for one of the combo deals, which gets you two meat choices with the same sides. Combo #2 is a great option as it includes both the teriyaki chicken and kalua pork: slow-cooked pork seasoned with Hawaiian salt. The best part about this place is that it’s just off of campus, meaning the distance between you and satisfying meal is only a few steps away. FALL 2019 Chews & Brews

food trucks for everyone. Words By Kimberly Harris

“Everyone eats” is a saying that my family uses often because we don’t let anyone sitting at the table go hungry. There’s always something for someone to eat regardless of their dietary preferences or pickiness. Eugene’s population of food carts opens up its table to all types of growling stomachs: vegetarians, carnivores and anyone in-between. Check out this list for a little bit of everything when it comes to food carts.

sammitch

Sammitch serves hamburgers, but as sandwiches. This food cart morphs the two meals into one by putting hamburger fixings onto a toasted sandwich bun. There is a unique variety of $7 sandwiches for vegetarians and meat lovers. The Turkey Gobbler embodies a thanksgiving dinner with a turkey patty, cranberries and vegetable stuffing. The Veggie Greekin’ sandwich has cucumber, kalamata olives, red onion and feta with a raspberry vinaigrette. Sandwiches can be enjoyed with a side of carrot fries or deep-fried mushroom bites.

rackhouse bbq

Rackhouse BBQ offers a compromise of preferences since they serve BBQ’d meats and jackfruit. House smoked meats such as pork ribs, chicken wings, pulled pork and beef brisket are slow-smoked and finished with housemade sauce. Guests with vegetarian preferences can enjoy a jackfruit slowsmoked with their signature rub and vegan BBQ sauce. Individual meals can be enjoyed for less than $15. Their classic BBQ sides like mac & cheese, baked beans, coleslaw and loaded cheese fries make sure that no customer leaves hungry.

the peaceful palate

This organic, vegan and gluten-free friendly food cart is nestled in the woods of the Whitaker and is guaranteed to satisfy your hungry but eco-friendly tummy. Offering raw options and a plethora of meal options throughout the day, like smoothies to-go or a basket of sweet potato friends smothered in cashew cheese, this food cart will leave your conscience clean and your stomach full.

wrap city

This cart takes different cultural favorites and serves them in a wrap. The simple fusion uses fresh ingredients to offer pad thai, curry, barbeque chicken and crunchy tacos in a wrap form. Wrap City offers katsu, orange chicken or teriyaki options for their rice and noodle bowls. Wraps and noodle bowls can be made gluten-free and for $6 or less.

subo

There are sushi burritos in Eugene, and this is not a drill. The trendy, culture fused meal is delicious and fresh like sushi but in the serving size of a big burrito. Subo serves sushi burritos and bowls for $8 or customers can build their own for less than $15. One of the best features of Subo is the variety of sauces there are to choose from like spicy mayo, sweet wasabi sauce, Cajun sauce, and sweet chili sauce are just a few options to go with their sushi burrito or bowl.

i scream for waffles

I Scream For Waffles is for the sweet and savory taste buds. The cart uses waffles to create desserts and dinners that make you forget the breakfast function of warm, crispy waffles. Tuesday through Friday they serve waffle cones with ice cream with various flavors like honey lavender, Nutter Butter and cookie butter inside. On Thursdays and sometimes throughout the weekends, they serve waffle chicken sandwiches, poutine and salads. Their chicken breast sandwiches feature a cheddar chive waffle bun.

vinnie's smokin bbq

Meat-lovers should consider checking out this BBQ cart. Vinnies Smokin BBQ combines culinary cuisine and a passion for cooking with a budget-friendly price. Sandwiches are less than $9 for hot links, chicken, pulled pork and beef with sweet or spicy BBQ sauce and coleslaw. Plates and Ribs that include a side can cost less than $13.

Chews & Brews FALL 2019

The “Barmuda Triangle” in downtown Eugene, named for the presence of its bars and affinity for luring and trapping its customers, is one of the cultural centerpieces directly outside of campus. On the stylized, old town streets, backed by the subtle hints of autumn, an unsuspecting open sign and a small red anex are easy to miss. But at 99 W Broadway, Pizza My Cart has quickly risen to be one of the most acclaimed street food eateries around. The six colorfully named menu items provide familiar flavors and unexplored combinations drawn from co-founder Josh Rodriguez’s diverse palette. All pizzas here are served on a crust that is thin yet commanding, balanced with subtly sweet marinara and a layer of soft cheese. The basic form strikes a welcome compromise in fancifulness, neither too artisan to lose the satisfaction of a mouthwatering evening slice nor greasy enough to invoke post-carb nausea. Popular choices include the dual cheese “Italian Stallion,” with garlic, yellow peppers, and sausage or the “She-So Chorizo,” inspired by Rodriguez’s grandmother’s cooking, topped with mozzarella, parmesan, and bacon with poblano peppers and mexican pork for a delicious mash-up of cuisine. Biting into the Chorizo, it is a dead ringer for an authentic soft shell taco, while maintaining the convenience of a slice of pie. Pizza My Cart was started in 2018 by Rodriguez and Travis Holiday, two bartenders from Eugene with restaurant experience, an oven found on-sale at a pizza convention, and the help of nearby business owners who gave them resources and a location. Now, the founders are typically hands off with the function of the business, with Holiday heading financials and Rodriguez fulfilling general management. This is different than many “mom and pop” food carts, which are typically worked by their founders. “It’s either me or Travis— are we gonna spend our entire Monday to Sunday doing this and that’s our life, or do we get employees and train them well and we can move on to other projects?” Resulting projects included a food truck for catering, which is currently under maintenance, and more recently, a brick and mortar location.

By mid-2019, it became abundantly clear that change was necessary. Despite its success, Pizza My Cart did not prove to be a sustainable standalone business, continuing to break even and pay its employees but providing little return for its owners. “Even on a great week, it’s not enough for me and Travis to support our families. There’s a cap to how much you can do on sales.” So, when a building went up for rent in the Whiteaker, they jumped at the opportunity for expansion. Slice Pizzeria and Bar, located at 325 Blair Boulevard, retains all of the familiar recipes of Pizza My Cart, but more extensive space and equipment allow for further experimentation. Industrial ovens allow for fuller flavors. The menu is larger and more diverse, with new pies like the “Lasagna” and barbecued tofu or chicken, appetizers, salads and a full bar which recreates the environmental experience of the Barmuda. In the near future, Rodriguez has bigger things planned for Slice, such as a deep-dish option and community events, like a proposed Old School vs. New School hip hop night. Still, Pizza My Cart is not being replaced. Rodriguez and Holiday are happy in continuing to provide customers with the recipes they so evidently love—the cart is one of the highest rated on Yelp in Eugene—and, more importantly, giving their workers stable jobs. “It’s not just my bills and my life,” says Rodriguez. “You get a good staff but then you have to make sure that you can give them what they need to live. It’s a big responsibility.” Rodriguez and Holiday’s brand of pizza—delicious, diverse in influence, and built up by the comradery of its staff—has grown at a rapid pace, utilizing Pizza My Cart as an easy entrance into the often daunting restaurant business. And the food, whether a classic flavor or an adventuresome future creation, is worth checking out for pizza enthusiasts and newbies alike.
