Living With Less This
By: Lauren Bruce
T
he start of spring term is a prime time to clean, reorganize and regroup. There’s no better way to prepare for the approaching warmer weather than clearing up for some more comfortable space. While you’re at it, why not do a little good? Donating your unneeded clothes and household items is a great way to give back while decluttering your own life, something we all need! Here are four ideas for ways to donate or swap your clothes while treating the community - and treating yo’self too! Now that your room is clutter free, there’s still work to be done to ensure you’re ready for the warm spells of spring. While the sunshine is great outside while you’re tossing a frisbee around with your friends, it can make some apartments, homes and dorms incredibly hot. Try closing the blinds during the day, keeping the lights off and a fan on at all times. The darker the room, the less the light will seep through the blinds and create a sauna that lasts through the night. Once the sun goes down, open a window that has a protective screen on it. This will keep cooler air circulating while you sleep, but prevent the gnat-like bugs that often accompany the warm spring weather. The bugs can be a particular problem in the dorms, often seen loitering outside windows and doors just waiting to sneak in, so if you can help it don’t open the large windows at night, and try blasting fans instead. It
SPRING
might be noisy, but at least it doesn’t buzz around your head. While you’re in the de-cluttering mindset, think about tossing old products that are expired. Shampoo, blush, powder, eyeliner and shower gel last for about 24 months. Sunscreen, cleanser, foundation, eyeshadow, lotion and lipstick are good for about 12 months, and mascara, lipgloss and liquid eyeliner are only good for about six months. So if you’ve been holding onto a Costco-size bottle of shampoo for a few years, it might be time to let it go. As for anything that belongs in a fridge or a kitchen cabinet and looks more fuzzy than the last time you saw it, go ahead and toss that too. Organization is also key. Start with recycling any old assignments or syllabi that you no longer need, and clear out your bag for the new term. If you have a laptop or desktop, spend some time organizing and sorting files. Instead of just deleting old files or throwing them into an ominous “Term 1 and 2” folder which will haunt you later and most likely end up in your recycle bin anyway, put each file into a folder with the name of the class, and then put those into a file with the name of the term. This way, you end up with one or two files on your desktop, neatly placed and out of the way so you can start the new term off right. Once you clean out your closet, kitchen, bathroom and school supplies, you’ll be ready to start living a minimal, stress-free life this term!
SAINT VINCENT de PAUL 1870 W 11th Ave Eugene, OR 97402 (541) 844-1945 Open every day from 10 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saint Vincent de Paul is another thrift chain that does a lot of good for the community. According to their website, the stores “provide jobs, job training, and a means to recycle items that would normally end up in landfills.” The proceeds from their stores support their free housing opportunities and emergency services among many other services they provide to people in need.
DORM SWAP Facebook.com/Groups/DormSwap Dorm Swap is a Facebook group created by UO students that allows people living in the dorms to sell or trade their clothes. So if the dorm life has made it harder for you to get over to Goodwill or Buffalo Exchange, request to join Dorm Swap and try your luck there. You might even be able to make a few bucks and you won’t have to cram your shirt drawer shut anymore.
GOODWILL 685 E. Broadway Eugene OR, 97401 (541) 344-1029 Open Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 p.m. to 6 p.m. If you’re looking to thin out your supply of winter coats, Goodwill accepts donations year-round and is a great opportunity to help people in need. Donating your excess stuff provides affordable clothes for people in need. According to their website, Goodwill’s goal is to “meet the needs of all job seekers, including programs for youth, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities, criminal backgrounds and other specialized needs.” So clean out your nest, ducks. You’ll actually be doing a lot of people good.
BUFFALO EXCHANGE 131 E. 5th Ave Eugene, OR 97401 Open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. 7 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Buffalo exchange will give you cash for your gently used or new, fashionable clothes. Give them a call and find out what they’re looking for at the moment, then drop by during their business hours to scrape up some extra cash. Plus, they’re constantly hosting events to help give a little back. Check out the $1 sale on Saturday, April 22 where a selection of their clothes is only $1 and the proceeds go to the Humane Society of the United States to help animals in need. What could be better for a duck?

PIERCE STREET GARDENS By: Nicole Scopelliti
Photos: Trevor Meyer
Pierce Street Gardens is often referred to as Eugene’s greatest hidden treasure. Nestled in a quiet neighborhood, one block south of Chambers and one block south of 18th, is a botanical wonderland inhabited by a plethora of plants and their dedicated caretaker, Marcia. What may look like a private home garden at first glance proves to go beyond what meets the eye. Pierce Street Gardens, although small in size, is bountiful in compassion and of course, unique plant life. Marcia Peeters, owner and operator of Pierce Street Gardens, was plunged into the world of agriculture and botany at a young age. Peeters noted that

gardening came naturally to her, as she was raised on her family’s farm in Wisconsin. After relocating to the Pacific Northwest, Peeters began working in the public sector and found herself gradually straying from her true passion: botany and mycology. She focused on enriching herself and expanding her environmental and botanical knowledge by attending Lane Community College and shortly after, University of Oregon. Peeters spoke enthusiastically about her time at Lane Community College and University of Oregon and the consequent knowledge she gained there: “I went to the University of Oregon and got my degree in what was then called leisure studies and services, with a focus on environmental education and outdoor recreation. I gained knowledge from those classes, but then I also worked with two of the instructors at LCC: the mushroom class instructor for about 20 years and the poisonous and edible plant botany instructor for five or six years. Then I worked for the forest service and worked with native plants.” It’s clear that the knowledge she gained from her education was as valuable then as it is today, as she is one of the most knowledgeable gardeners, botanists and mycologists in Eugene. Peeters not only ensures that she is giving her customers quality plants, but she takes pride in knowing that her customers leave with the knowledge to care for the plant as well. Between Peeters’s time in the public sector and her
journey at Lane Community college, she was given her first plant. This first plant, which was given to her by a neighbor, would turn out to be the catalyst for her plant rescue and botanical business. After deciding to wholeheartedly invest rescue non-invasive, healthy plants, Peeters also spent time volunteering at Mt. Pisgah. It was during this time that she also gained a loyal vegetable clientele and began to share her vegetable plants with neighbors. Consequently, Peeters built a greenhouse, intending to grow and house vegetables inside. The greenhouse is still an integral part of Pierce Street Gardens today, however it now houses succulents and cacti. Pierce Street Gardens is home to what Peeters calls “an eclectic mix of plants” thanks to plant rescue. For Peeters, plant rescue has value and immense meaning in her life: “I do plant rescue which is taking plants that are healthy and happy, and for whatever reason somebody doesn’t want them in their yard anymore. I don’t take anything diseased and I don’t take anything invasive. Someone asked me once, ‘Did you rescue the plants or did the plants rescue you?’ And I said, ‘Well, both.’” Pierce Street Gardens is more than just a business for Peeters. It is a living, breathing extension of herself and is an integral space in her everyday life. She noted that although plant rescue and gardening is a constant learning process, it is exceptionally rewarding and exciting.
Whatever your plant needs are, Pierce Street Gardens is likely to have the solution. Peeters sells an abundance of indoor plants such as cacti, succulents and tillandsia, which are popular among college students because of their low-maintenance nature. You will also find an abundance of outdoor plants including butterfly, bee and bird friendly plants, as well as plants that explicitly love shade or strictly thrive in sunny environments. Peeters also sells vegetable starter plants, primarily in the spring and early summer months. Peeters added that if you’re looking for unique or odd plants, Pierce Street Gardens is a great place to find them: “People in the community know that I like odd plants, so if they know about
a plant or hear about one, they’ll usually come here first and ask if I’m interested in that specific plant.” Additionally, the plants at Pierce Street Gardens are affordable and of exceptional quality. Peeters assured that she values her customers and that she sells her plants at the most reasonable prices possible. She noted, “If someone sells me something inexpensively, then I’m going to sell them to my customers inexpensively. Customers come first; that is my priority.” Grab a new house plant for the summer and experience Pierce Street Gardens for yourself. You can find the gardens at 2008 Pierce Street, and are open from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., seven days a week.

Pantone’s 2017
COLOR OF THE YEAR By: Skyla Patton
Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year is in, and Duck fans rejoice – it’s our colors! “Greenery” is here to refresh your environment and revitalize the mood in every room it’s in. Each year, an elite color is selected to symbolize new beginnings and evoke thoughts of the season and time. They described this earthy, comforting color as a “life-affirming shade…emblematic of the pursuit of passions and vitality.” Pantone chooses each unique color to represent specific aspects of the world’s culture and happenings and convey the attitude that comes with those things. Leading the technology industry in color authority since 1963, Pantone is the go-to consultant for all of your color questions and needs. With its warm hues and relaxed tone of vibrancy, Greenery can easily blend into any style of home and is diverse in its uses. Due to its neutrality, it can be paired with almost any other color that falls on the pastel or metallic side of the color spectrum. Continue the earthy theme with warm browns or shoot for something more intense by pairing it with a vibrant pink or yellow. The obvious and most organic option for incorporating this great color pattern into your style is by taking it literally: plants! If you’re looking for something more modern to upscale your apartment, find a vibrant succulent in neutral-tone pots (whites or grays) to contrast the bright green color of the spikes and really make the accent pop. Rather, if your home is a little more casual and you’re

looking for a comfortable vibe, vining plants most often come in this shade of Greenery and can be added to the top of any bookshelf or dining table to make a room feel instantly more ‘lax. The color of Greenery offers the promise of possibility for rejuvenation and an escape from the modern world to better embrace natural concepts, suggesting this in its durability over time. Greenery is present from the rich green grass poking out of snow in the winter to the first few blooms of leaves blooming out after a harsh spring rain. Incorporate this freshness into your home through splashes of basic décor like a cozy blanket throw to brighten up a den, or a vintage frame on the wall during the warmer seasons to bring the feeling of growth and sunshine to your photos and paintings as well. If you’re looking for a more permanent inclusion of this welcoming color, check out Fiestaware’s wide selection of vibrant dishware conveniently available in not only Greenery, but several other variances on both sides of the color spectrum. For the loyal Oregon fans out there, this is your time to shine! Keep your eye out for Duck gear or home décor that strays away from the harsh dark greens and yellows and looks more “vintage” – Hirons Pharmacy and the Duck Store itself have wide arrays of classic gear in warmer tones that will keep your passion for the Duck life prominent while incorporating this trendy color as well.

arth Day is all about renewing the planet we have and promoting environmental protection. It inclines us to start getting outside, volunteering and recycling - also known as the things we forget to do every other day of the week. However, with the appearance of sunny days and warm weather, we should think about
Guerilla Outdoor Program April 20, 2017, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Outdoor Program (OP) Barn 1225 E 18th Ave, Eugene, OR 97403
Service Project: Buford Park Native Plant Nursery April 22, 2017, 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Depart from the OP Barn Sign up for this free experience to volunteer working with plants and then taking a hike up Mt. Pisgah. Mt. Pisgah is in between the forks of the Willamette River. To reach the summit, it is only a 1.4 mile hike that leads to a panoramic view of the willamette valley. Everything you will need and snacks are provided.
●● Disposing of aerosol cans Aerosol can products collect up and harm our environment. By limiting your use of them, you not only saving yourself but also saving what is around you. However, Aerosol cans cannot be recycled or thrown away in the typical recycle or waste bins provided by Lane county. Aerosol cans have to be specifically taken to take to Lane County Hazardous Waste by appointment on Thursdays and Saturdays. To set up an appointment, call 541-682-4120.
giving back more and being green throughout the year. Not only can volunteering and being green renew the earth, but it renews us as people. Taking care of ourselves along with benefitting the environment. Here are a few programs and events you can become involved with to give back to your community through Earth Week and beyond.
Cirque Du Relay April 22, 2017, 12 p.m. - 12 a.m. UO Rec field 1
Join in on an open conversation to take recreational activities and turn it into environmental activism. Thought you were just a casual bicyclist? Nope, take it to the next level and see how you can lead yourself and people around you in protecting the environment. Join Radical Organizing and Activism Resource (ROAR) and discuss how any outdoor enthusiasts roles can lead to protecting the environment.
Tips for staying green all year long:
EARTH WEEK
Get out and get involved by running in support of those affected by cancer. Relay for Life, which raises money for the American Cancer Society, provides support for those who are currently affected and celebrates and remembers those affected by cancer. Anyone and everyone is welcome to this event - you don’t have to be pre-registered to attend! If you would like to create a team or donate money to the event, register at www. uorelay.org.
Service project: Bicyclean June 3, 2017, 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. Depart from the OP Barn Bicycling is a great way to exercise and give back to the environment. This will be BicyClean’s 4th annual event, partnered with the Hilyard Center to provide bikes to people of all physical abilities. Everyone can bike and clear trash from Eugene’s river walkways.
●● Dispose of your batteries Most dead batteries (car, watch, rechargeable, etc.) can be recycled freely in Eugene. By recycling batteries, the chemicals from the casings and metals won't pollute or erode soil and they won’t end up in a landfill incinerator, reducing the amount of chemical air pollution. Go to www.BringRecycling.org for a full guide of where to take materials that can’t be traditionally thrown away or recycled.
●● Watch your laundry routine Save yourself time, money and the earth's resources by doing laundry only when you have a full load of laundry. Use cold water instead of hot to save 90% of your washer’s
energy. Switch over to environment friendly detergent, like Biokleen, which is gentler on your clothes, avoids harsh chemical usage and is packaged in recyclable plastic!
●● Use eco-friendly makeup More and more makeup brands promote being cruelty-free and use environment friendly products. Not only are natural products better for the environment and save the planet’s resources, but they’re also better for your skin. I’d recommend brands such as Nyx, KissMyFace, Yesto, E.L.F., Wet n Wild. These can be found at most retail stores, or you can check out the Kiva Market, which carries natural body products and cleaning supplies. It is located on W 11th by the bus station. This squishy cactus is exploding with antioxidants, amino acids, and vitamins. The gooey gel on the inside of the stems has been used in medicinal practices for over thousands of years by cultures across the world, and its popularity is only increasing over time. Aloe vera can not only help improve the air quality of your home, but can cure a multitude of common ailments. The gel can be used as a soothing treatment for cuts or burns or applied to cold sores in the mouth for fast recovery. It’s even been proven to help lessen swelling and redness on acne. On top of all these awesome things, it’s almost the easiest plant in the whole world to take care of. Put your new cactus in an average-sized pot by a window that gets lots of sunlight and water it every week or so. You’ll be a medicinal healer in no time!

Any proper health nut will breathe a sigh of relief at seeing this magical little root’s name pop up somewhere. On top of just smelling fantastic and being a staple in many of the most popular tea brews, ginger can be a save-all when it comes to illness and immune system repair. Munching on ginger – in tea, chewy candy, or even just raw root form – can act as an antioxidant as well as activating your t-cells (the ones that destroy viruses like tiny little gingerflavored warriors). Ginger is super easy to grow as well, simply by soaking a thick ginger root in some water overnight and then burying it in a shallow pot with the bud poking out of the surface.

One of the easiest ways to ease the pain in your sinuses or your eyes from allergens is to clean the air in areas that you spend a lot of time in, like your dorm or apartment. Philodendrons have been proven in studies by NASA to be one of the most effective plants in removing formaldehyde from the air, an organic compound that leads to the uncomfortable feeling your skin gets when it reacts to the allergens. Philodendron is a pretty plain-looking leafy green plant, but it is a vining plant and depending on the strain will sometimes produce small white flowers! Place your new stringy friend in a medium-sized pot somewhere on a shelf where it gets indirect light and can vine its way around the room, but somewhere you can get to it easily to water occasionally.

A classic favorite, lavender is a beautiful little flower that often flourishes indoors and offers great assistance in not only getting to sleep at night but in mood improvement as well. Its floral scent can help reduce insomnia and depression, along with lessening fatigue and helping one fall asleep faster in the evening. Also, lavender has been rumored to “purify and cleanse the soul and spirit” in many old folk tales. Put it in a decorative, deep pot so the roots can stretch out and let in lots of sunshine. These plants are a little pickier than others, so occasional outdoor “detoxes” can make their life span much longer. Remember, the sleep-aid skills of this plant come from it’s scent, so be sure to put it somewhere by your bed in the evening.
