SPRING BREAK
SAFETY TIPS By: Kelsey Tidball
A
fter a long and rainy Eugene winter, spring break is quickly approaching. Before you can think about soaking up the sun, lounging by the pool or getting some much-needed rest and relaxation away from The Eug, you should think about properly preparing your dorm, house or apartment for your week long vacation. Like many college towns, Eugene is notorious for burglary and bike theft, which has caused the popular bike lock brand, Kryptonite, to place Eugene on their list of cities with the worst bike theft in the country. Like it or not, theft is a huge problem at the University of Oregon, but it can be mostly avoidable. Here are some practical tips for ensuring that your home is secure before leaving on spring break.
1) 2)
PLUMBING HOUSEWARES ELECTRICAL HARDWARE LAWN & GARDEN TOOLS PAINT

Lock (and double check) all doors and windows. Walk through your home before you leave. Make sure all back doors and windows are locked and secured.
Leave a light on. When you are home, lights turn on and off during the day, making it clear that people are in the house. Leave a light on in the kitchen or a hallway to dissuade potential thieves and trick them into thinking you are home.
Lock your bike. Lock it on the balcony, in the backyard, or bring it inside the house while you are away. Take the key with you instead of leaving it in the house.
Exchange contact information with your neighbors. Do you have a next-door-neighbor or hallmate who could watch over things while you are gone? Exchange phone numbers just in case. They might also be able to help you keep an eye on any pets, plants or property that you leave behind curing spring break. Make friends with your neighbors and look out for each other.
Call your housing company to tell them when you’ll be gone. If your housing company knows that you’ll be away for more than a few days, they might be able to keep an eye on things for you. Communicate with them about your vacation plans and let them know about any specific concerns you may have about being away.
6)
Get renter’s insurance. Most insurance companies offer renter’s insurance, and some companies even provide students with renter’s insurance under a parent’s homeowner’s insurance. Check the policy your parents have and consider adding renter’s insurance to cover your laptop, bike, television and all other expensive items you might be leaving behind.
O
nce you have done all of these things, feel free to rest easy and enjoy your spring break! If you have any questions or need further clarification about how to secure your specific property, call your housing company and ask. Most will supply you with their own comprehensive list of things to do before you leave for an extended period of time, and they are happy to help, especially if it ensures the safety of you and your belongings.

OH THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!
WITH YOUR STUDENT I.D.
W

ith your UO student ID card, you receive access to some extra perks. You might have heard about these, including free access to many UO events and free fare on Lane County’s transit system, but have you really explored the options the card gives you? You can get as far as 53 miles away from Eugene with your student I.D. So whether you want to see more of the city or get the hell out of it, you can access all of Lane Transit District’s routes with your student ID card.
Skinner Butte For scenic views within city limits, Skinner Butte is a great spot. Located on the north edge of downtown Eugene, the hill looks out over the Willamette River. Skinner Butte is one of our city’s most famous local landmarks, and also is home to Skinner Butte Park, a municipal park. There are plenty of hiking trails surrounding Skinner Butte, both official and trail-blazed, so there’s always a new route to hike through. Skinner Butte can be reached via bus 51 from Eugene Station, which is located downtown at the corner of 11th and Willamette.

Valley River Center If you’re looking to spend the money burning a hole in your pocket, Valley River Center has the shopping experience you need. Many refer to it affectionately as “VRC,” and it’s definitely the mall with the broadest range of options in Eugene. With clothing stores, a movie theater, hobby shops and dining options, Valley River Center is a great place to waste an afternoon. Getting there is simple – just jump on bus 66 from Eugene Station.

Ridgeline Trail The Ridgeline trail system forms a circular path around the southern perimeter of the city. Through a series of large, semi-connected parklands, the trails are a favorite for the Eugene community because of the recreational possibilities it offers. With sprawling open spaces and a natural habitat, the Ridgeline system is accessible through a network of more than 12 miles of trail. To get to the first of seven trailheads, take bus 73 from Eugene Station.

McKenzie Bridge McKenzie Bridge is a small town on the outskirts of Lane County. It sits on the McKenzie River, and a trip down to the surrounding area on one of the many upcoming bright spring days makes for a great day trip. It’s a truly beautiful area located just outside town. Bring a bike along for the ride, and you’ll be able to further expand your reach into the outdoor offerings of McKenzie Bridge. The route runs from Eugene Station (Bay G) at 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, where you can take the route all the way to McKenzie Bridge.
91 The Whiteaker The Whiteaker is the perfect place to visit if you miss Portland. With tons of trendy restaurants like Board, Papa’s Soul Food and more, this neighborhood helps you get away from the campus vibe of greater Eugene. Much of the area is residential, and a stroll through the neighborhood reveals an array of interesting mid-century modern housing that seems a world away from the cookie-cutter apartment buildings so common around campus. If the UO vibe is getting stale, check out the Whiteaker by taking the EMX to Eugene Station and hopping on bus 40.

somewhere tropical and beautiful, the warm sand is calling your name as you’re drifting to sleep in excitement…and a baby cries. Or the man sitting next to you is snoring, or maybe even the conversation ten rows up is obnoxiously loud and you just can’t tune it out. Popping in your earbuds and relaxing to some smooth jazz or maybe Frank Ocean (whatever floats your boat) will save your life on a noisy plane ride or even in the backseat of a long car ride. Beats headphones are popular for good reason and have a wide selection of styles and features, but for those of us on a tighter budget, check out smaller brands like Sony or Skullcandy for some simple wire earbuds to tuck in your backpack on the go. You can find everything you’ll need at the Duck Store.
phone charger within easy reach is a traveling no-brainer when it comes to the necessities. Make sure you have the USB cord, a car adapter and a wall block so you’ll be ready for whatever outlet is presented to you when you need it. If you want to get really techsavvy or you’re going on a vacation where you won’t be near electricity all the time, invest in a charging block! They sell for reasonable prices on Amazon and can usually fit into a small pocket on a purse or backpack; most hold up to several full charges, so you can kiss the fear of a dead phone goodbye, even while in the wilderness!
in general, but having some delicious snacks on hand while traveling is especially important. Not only will packing some treats in your bag allow for snacking at your leisure, it can also save you tons of money on your trip! Be sure to check the rules of your airline if you’re flying and remember large liquids are not allowed, but most TSA checks will let you pass right on by with some Cheez-Its or trail mix stuffed away in your backpack. As an added bonus, if you’re a passenger for a long road trip, having snack distribution duties can get you some bonus points with your friends and put you front and center with the food itself. Stop by local stores before you leave for Spring Break to stock up on your favorite foods — Trader Joe’s is known for it’s quirky snacks and locations like Whole Foods or Market of Choice have a large section of organic and healthy options.
time faster or more pleasurably than reading! Whether you prefer a thick volume from the non-fiction side of the library or a nice new edition of Cosmopolitan, settling in with a good read can relax and prepare you for the long journey ahead. If you’re hell-bent on focusing on vacation, look into travel or tourism guides to print out and bring with you. This will get yourself even more hyped! Local store Tsunami Books offers a unique vintage feel in their store and a wide range of fiction novels, and J Michaels Books is always stocked up on the classics. If you’re looking for latest releases, it’s always safest to stop by the local branch of Barnes & Noble — there’s a cafe attached to it too!

you flashbacks to your mother slathering it on you before you got to go to the pool with your friends, which was just the worst. Still, sunblock does have a purpose. Despite how weird it smells, it can save your vacation experience from an uncomfortable sunburn. If you’re on the paler side, invest in some strong SPF 30 for your face and shoulders. If you tend to tan nicely, a small bottle of SPF 15 facial sunblock will protect your skin just fine! SunBum is a family-owned corporation that offers a wide range of sun care, offering products for both prevention and soothing - just in case you do end up getting a nice toasting on vacation.
getaway, chapped lips can ruin your mood and your chance of a romantic kiss with a potential love interest, so having chapstick within reach at all times is a must! If you’re headed somewhere cooler, the usual Burts Bees will do the trick, but if it’s going to be warmer for your Spring Break, opting for a tube (like Carmex) will serve you better so you don’t end up with a pocket of melted goo.
WALLET PHONE CASE – For most of us, carrying around a
large backpack or purse is an inconvenience reserved exclusively for the school year if we can absolutely help it. If you’re a minimalist who wants to have both hands free during your vacation time, investing in a wallet-phone case can make a huge difference for you! There’s so many options in the market now with different features, but each offers the basic protective case for your phone along with several slots for the absolute necessities: driver’s license, student ID, credit cards, maybe some cash tucked into the back. Keeping everything in one neat location will make your tourist adventure that much simpler! Open up your laptop for some online shopping for this one — big brands like Amazon have a plethora of options, or check out RedBubble for custom made cases with funky designs made by individual artists themselves!
WATER BOTTLE – The University of Oregon is well-known for
its plethora of Hydro Flasks. They’re covered in personalized stickers and decals, and there’s no reason that trend can’t continue into foreign territory over spring break! Bringing a sturdy water bottle with you for your travels will ensure you’re always hydrated during your adventures and can help lessen plastic waste each time you opt for your own water bottle rather than an Aquafina or Voss at the gas station. Toting your own bottle is even easier now that most popular tourist locations have installed a refillable water bottle station – even if they don’t, everywhere has a water fountain for the quick refills! Pick up a fresh hydro flask at your local Duck Store, or check out the store Made In Oregon for their huge selection of travel cups, which also includes decorations for them too.

HAND SANITIZER – Traveling is all fun and games until you realize
the cozy car seats and 150-person planes are a fertile breeding ground for the worst kind of germs. To protect yourself during the break and for when you return home, storing a pocket-sized hand sanitizer in your bag and using it a few times a day can make a huge difference in your ability to fend off sickness. Bath & Body Works sells travel-sized ones for less than five dollars, or you can get an unscented version at the Dollar Tree.
10) TOOTHBRUSH
– Keeping a toothbrush with you is generally a good idea at all times, but it can be especially nice when you’re away from home and won’t have access to one immediately. They sell cheap cases to cover the head of your normal toothbrush and prevent it from coming into contact with anything else in your bag, but there’s also disposable mini-brushes that have small capsules of toothpaste inside the bristles that pop when you begin to brush! These tiny cavity-fighters can be a life saver when you’re feeling gross after a long car ride or have eaten one too many chips to sit that close to someone on a plane without minty fresh breath.

SOBER SOCIALS By: Sam Styles

When finals wrap up, most of us will head home or on a trip, but a few people will remain in Eugene. For those of us who do stay in town, this is the perfect opportunity to explore the parts of town that you’ve never seen before — at your leisure, of course. Too often, those of us who live here talk about checking out the sights and sounds of Eugene, but never actually follow through. With full schedules and active social lives, it can be hard to break out of the norm of campus life. So much of what we as students do is centered around campus that we tend to forget the opportunities that come from being part of the Eugene community. So if you are staying in town over spring break and you want to recharge your batteries or hit the town, check out one of the new spots on this list, or even find your own.

BEERGARDEN. If you have the time, you should definitely explore the entire Whiteaker area. It’s a neighborhood full of things to eat and drink, as well as a number of shops to explore. The whiteaker is the kind of place one could easily get lost in for a day, and the Beergarden is the perfect place to either start or finish that day. It offers a huge selection of food trucks serving amazing things like pulled pork mac and cheese and authentic Hawaiian cuisine. In addition to the food, there are many wonderful beers and ciders on tap, a number of which are brewed in the Eugene area. If you aren't looking for food or drink, Beergarden has live music on Thursdays and Saturdays on their sprawling patio, which is heated and comfortable in all weather. Swing by Wednesday, March 29th, for Working Women’s Wednesday and enjoy a DJ raffle prizes and free appetizers.
GET AIR If you want to get out and stretch your legs over spring break and it happens to be raining - which it very well might be - Get Air is a great place to go. Completely covered in trampolines, you can play a wide variety of games at Get Air, including dodgeball, basketball and more. This is your chance to finally dunk a basketball - just like you’ve always dreamed. If you are just looking to bounce around and practice your backflips, that’s fine too. There is space for all. Get Air is fun and the perfect place to blow off some steam and get in touch with your inner child. If you are worried about costs then swing by on a Wednesday and take advantage of the student discount. If you show a student ID, you’ll get 20% off your admission.
