Season Outlook

DUCKS FINISH 2013 CAMPAIGN WITH EIGHT WINS After capturing the 2012 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season and tournament titles, Oregon shot quickly out of the gates in 2013, winning four out of its first five games to start the season. The Ducks’ 7-6 victory over Davidson on March 8, 2013 marked their fourth-straight victory after losing the season-opener to No. 12 Dartmouth. They were 4-1 overall at the time. But a 13-5 loss at home to No. 2 Florida and a tough 12-10 loss to San Diego State to open the MPSF season in Eugene put Oregon in a difficult position entering its first road trip of the year. On the road trip, which featured three games from March 24-30, the Ducks lost the first two at Marist and Connecticut before salvaging the finale at Old Dominion on March 30. The Ducks then went 2-2 over their next four games (all of which were conference games) to push their record to 7-7 overall and 2-3 in MPSF play. Oregon was eliminated from MPSF Tournament contention after a 15-8 loss at No. 15 Stanford on April 19 but beat UC Davis on April 21 before falling at No. 11 Denver to finish the season at 8-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

RECAP: Freshman Carly O’Connell scored a goal with 4.8 seconds left to break a 6-6 tie and send Oregon to a thrilling 7-6 victory over High Point at Papé Field. With under a minute to play and the Ducks with possession, Oregon decided to milk the clock and hold the ball for a final shot. As the clock approached the 10-second mark, junior Nikki Puszcz delivered a pass to O’Connell about 12 yards from the goal. O’Connell then juked two defenders and moved her way into the center, where she sent a shot from point-blank range past High Point goalie Anna Wallingford. For O’Connell, the game-winning goal was her second of the night and fourth of the season. Oregon fell into a 2-0 hole to start the match. With 14:24 to go in the first, Puszcz finally got the Ducks on the board after receiving a pass from Shannon Propst. But High Point got the goal back just seven minutes later courtesy of Jasmine Jordan. The Panthers carried their 3-1 lead into the break. In the second, the Ducks scored the first two goals of the half to tie it up. The first came from Kate Cathell just under five minutes into the half and Propst picked up her fifth goal of the season two minutes later for the second. After the two teams exchanged a pair of goals, Oregon was finally able to take the lead when Puszcz buried her second goal of the game with 13:03 remaining. At that point, the Ducks led 6-5. High Point’s Alec Perry knocked home a shot with 5:23 left to tie the game for the fourth time (6-6), however. The game stayed tied at six until the Ducks were able to gain possession with 4:20 to go when Erika McCool scooped up her third ground ball of the evening. Oregon kept possession of the ball to set up O’Connell’s late heroics with five seconds to play. Salliebeth Finnegan recorded her first win of the season, making three saves in 57 minutes of action. Puszcz, O’Connell and Propst each posted two goals; Puszcz and Propst both finished with two assists. McCool’s three ground balls led all players and Raleigh Cavey, O’Connell, and Casey Brogan each grabbed two as well. Brogan and Puszcz paced the Ducks in the draw control category with three. Oregon took five more shots than High Point (17-12) and won the ground ball battle, 12-11. The Ducks committed just 12 turnovers; the Panthers committed 17.

Oregon senior Kate Cathell scored a career-high four goals to lead the Ducks and junior Shannon Propst tied a career-high with three. In addition, Cathell posted two assists to tie her career-best and sophomore Devon Frazer punched home two goals for the second time in her career. After Oregon raced out to a 3-0 lead, senior Maggie Kovacs scored back-to-back goals to put the Ducks ahead, 5-0. Cincinnati cut the lead to 5-1 moments later but a 3-0 run sparked by a Casey Brogan goal and two Cathell scores put the Ducks in the driver’s seat with an 8-1 lead. RECAP: Liz Calby’s goal with 1:03 left in the second overtime period lifted No. 12 Dartmouth to a dramatic 8-7 victory over Oregon at a rainy Papé Field. Oregon juniors Nikki Puszcz and Sami Kiser each scored two goals to pace the Ducks; Puszcz and Shannon Propst finished the match with two assists. Puszcz got the scoring started just under three minutes into the match by capitalizing on a pass from Propst. The man-up goal was Puszcz’s 56th of her career and second all-time against Dartmouth. But the Big Green responded with two Hana Bowers goals over the next six minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Then, with 17:31 remaining in the half, Propst evened the score at two with a shot from point-blank range. Propst’s first goal of the season was the last of the half for either team. Oregon came out hot after the break and scored the first two goals of the half in less than seven minutes to grab a 4-2 advantage. Sophomore Devon Frazer scored the Ducks’ third goal of the match from the right wing and Kiser took a pass from Savanna Peters to put the Ducks up two. After the Ducks and Big Green exchanged goals, Dartmouth cut the Oregon lead to one (5-4) with 15:09 left thanks to Jaclyn Leto. The Big Green would tie the match at five just moments later when Bowers scored her third goal of the match with 14:17 to go. Then, Liz Calby gave the Big Green their first lead, 6-5, since the 21:55 mark in the first half with a free position shot at the 13:21 mark. But the Ducks battled back to score two unanswered goals to take a 7-6 lead. The first of the two saw Puszcz’s second of the afternoon; the second came at the 10:33 mark and featured freshman Carly O’Connell’s first career goal. With 9:08 remaining, Dartmouth evened the score at 7-7 when Frances Bird converted a shot from just inside the circle. Neither team manufactured a goal for the rest of regulation and the match went into overtime. In the first half of the overtime period, only Puszcz could get off a shot for the Ducks - it came with eight seconds left and was saved by Dartmouth goalie Kristen Giovanniello. The match remained tied at seven heading into the second overtime frame. In the second three minutes, Puszcz was awarded possession of the ball in the opening draw control but Dartmouth’s Lindsey Allard forced and Oregon turnover to get the ball back for the Big Green. They would melt the clock down to just over a minute left. Calby then took a pass from Bowers with 1:03 to go an rifled a shot into the net to give Dartmouth an 8-7 lead that it would not relinquish. Oregon out-shot the Big Green 20-19 but fell in the draw control category, 12-7. Duck goalie Caroline Federighi made five saves and picked up three ground balls, which tied for the team-high with O’Connell. Dartmouth was able to convert two out of its six free position attempts while Oregon went 0-for-4. The Ducks finished with 15 ground balls; Dartmouth managed to scoop up 13. RECAP: For the second straight game, freshman Carly O’Connell delivered in the game’s waning moments for the Oregon Ducks. This time, it came in the second half of the first overtime period. With the Ducks trailing Vermont, 13-12, O’Connell rebounded a shot by Kate Cathell that hit the post and rifled it into the goal to send the game into sudden victory. The teams played to a draw through the first three minutes of the golden-goal period. But finally, with 1:47 on the clock, junior Nikki Puszcz drew a foul on Vermont’s Vanessa VanderZalm to set up a freeposition attempt angled off to the left of the net. Puszcz capitalized on the opportunity by sending a shot past goalie Charlotte Lyons to secure a dramatic 14-13 triple-overtime win for Oregon. In a game that featured 10 ties and six lead changes, the visiting Catamounts scored the first two goals of the match and carried a 7-6 lead into the break. Devon Frazer and senior Cathell each scored two goals for the Ducks in the first. Oregon, which led by no more than one goal the entire night, gave up a goal to Vermont’s Marcie Marino to start the second half but rattled off the next two thanks to goals by O’Connell and Frazer. Then, with the game knotted at nine, the Ducks were able to take their first lead of the game since the 4:43 mark of the first half when Puszcz scored her second goal of the game with 22:02 remaining. The match continued with its back-and-forth theme, and with the score tied at 11, senior Bridget Morrison, a defender, forced a Lyons turnover, scooped up the ground ball, and floated a 35-yard shot into the net to give the Ducks a 12-11 advantage. For Morrison, the goal was the second of her career and first since her freshman campaign in 2010. But the resilient Catamounts refused to go away. With 7:02 to go, Sydney Mas scored her fifth goal of the game to tie it up, 12-12. The 12-12 score held over the final seven minutes and the game went into overtime. In the first half of the overtime period, Jessica Roach scored for the Catamounts to give her team a one-goal edge. Vermont won both draw controls of the overtime’s first half and Oregon went into the second trailing, 13-12. O’Connell won the opening draw control for the Ducks to give them possession. On its first attempt to score, Frazer missed a shot high but Shannon Propst scooped up the ground ball to give O’Connell an opportunity from five yards out. O’Connell fired a shot but it was saved by Lyons. After a Vermont clear, Roach fired a shot that was saved by Oregon’s Salliebeth Finnegan with 45 seconds remaining. The Ducks would call a timeout to set up one final play. Out of the timeout, O’Connell sent a shot wide of the net with 21 seconds remaining but the shot was backed up by Propst to keep the ball with Oregon. This set the stage for O’Connell, who rebounded the shot from Cathell and then scored with seven seconds to play. After a scoreless first sudden-victory period, Puszcz capitalized on the free-position shot to win it in the second. The Ducks out-shot the Catamounts, 37-25, but lost the draw control battle, 17-15. Oregon committed 15 turnovers to Vermont’s 16 and Finnegan finished the game with five saves. Oregon grabbed 16 ground balls as a team Puszcz, Cathell and Frazer each recorded a hat-trick and Propst led the way with two assists. Morrison and Finnegan each scooped up four ground balls to lead the Ducks, O’Connell finished with a team-high five draw controls and Puszcz caused three Vermont turnovers.

RECAP: Oregon’s Sami Kiser scored a goal with 11:14 left to break a 6-6 tie and the Duck defense held off a feisty Davidson offense the rest of the way to preserve Oregon’s fourth-straight victory, 7-6. Davidson’s Ana Fucigna scored the first goal of the game just over three minutes in to give the Wildcats their first and only lead of the game. Oregon would go on to rattle off the next five goals to grab a 5-1 advantage. Senior Kate Cathell and sophomore Devon Frazer each scored two of the five goals and Kiser added the other. In the second, Lindsay Cooper scored a goal for the Wildcats to even the score at five with 22:16 remaining but Cathell responded with her third goal of the night and 11th of the season at the 17:44 mark. For Cathell, it marked the third game of the year where she scored at least three goals. With 15 minutes to go, Alanna Parker knotted the score at six with an unassisted goal, but Kiser’s second goal of the day off of Shannon Propst’s third assist with 11:14 left put the Ducks up for good. Cathell, Frazer and Kiser were Oregon’s only goal-scorers. Propst’s assist total accounted for three out of the four Duck assists. Hayley Milner had the other. Oregon goalie Salliebeth Finnegan (3-0) picked up her third-straight win in goal and made a season-high nine saves in the Duck triumph. RECAP: The second-ranked Florida Gators snapped Oregon’s fourgame winning streak with a 13-5 victory in Eugene. Florida started the game off hot, scoring two goals in under five minutes. But with 21:27 to play in the opening half, Oregon’s Casey Brogan got the Ducks on the board with her second goal of the year. However, the Gators would go on a 4-0 run to take a commanding 6-1 lead with 15:09 to go in the first. Each of Florida’s goals during the run were scored by a different player. Shannon Propst and Nikki Puszcz helped the Ducks crawl back into the game over the next four minutes, though. At the 14:18 mark, Propst scored her eighth goal of the year off a pass from Puszcz and then returned the favor by dishing the ball off to Puszcz for a goal with 10:51 remaining in the half. Puszcz’s eighth goal of the year made it a 6-3 game. But Florida regrouped after Puszcz’s goal and went on to score the next three goals thanks to Gabi Wiegand, Ashley Bruns and Brittany Dashiell, who posted a hat-trick in the first half, to take a 9-3 lead heading into halftime. In the second half, Oregon used patient possessions to cut the Gator lead to five, 9-4, when Propst scored an unassisted goal at the 21:41 mark. The Ducks could not pull within five the rest of the way. After a 10-minute scoring drought, Florida’s Caroline Chesterman and Shannon Gilroy scored goals with 10:31 and 6:53 remaining, respectively, to put the game out of reach. Oregon senior Kate Cathell scored the Ducks’ final goal of the match at the 4:35 mark. Florida out-shot the Ducks 29-15 and won the draw control battle, 12-8. Oregon goalie Salliebeth Finnegan made eight saves and scooped up a game-high three ground balls. Propst finished the day with two goals and one assist. Her three points gave her 100 for her career and moved her past Alison Leiner for 10th on Oregon’s all-time points list. The Ducks will have six days off before their next game on March 22 when they host San Diego State in the first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game of the year. The game is the first of four in just eight days for Oregon and is the final leg of a seven-game homestand to start the year.

RECAP: Four players scored multiple goals for the Oregon Ducks in the team’s 10-9 victory over Old Dominion. The win snapped the Ducks’ four-game losing streak. Oregon improved to 5-5 overall with the win, while Old Dominion fell to 3-8. In addition, the win gave the Ducks momentum heading into the bulk of their conference schedule. Beginning on Thursday (April 4) with a home game against USC on the Pac-12 Networks, Oregon will play seven-straight Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches to wrap up the regular season. Senior Kate Cathell led the Oregon charge with three goals today against Old Dominion. Nikki Puszcz, Hayley Milner and Shannon Propst each scored two and Carly O’Connell was responsible for the Ducks’ other tally. The two teams played the first half to a 4-4 draw but Oregon came out swinging when Puszcz scored the second of her two goals to put the Ducks up a goal. The game remained close, however, as the teams exchanged a pair of goals. But with the game tied at six, Propst and Cathell converted back-to-back goals to put the Ducks up two. Old Dominion could not draw even the rest of the way. Milner’s second goal of the day came with 3:13 remaining in the second and it put the Ducks up 10-8 to help secure the win.

RECAP: The first-ever live lacrosse broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks went the way of the visiting USC Trojans at a soggy Pape Field. The Trojans’ win came in spite of an inspired five-goal effort from Oregon junior Hayley Milner. Milner’s goal total matched her career-high which she set last week at Connecticut. She has averaged four goals per game over the last three contests. USC hopped out to a 3-1 lead thanks to consecutive goals scored by Caroline Cordrey and Paige Bonomi when the game was knotted at one. But Oregon responded with a 2-0 run of its own. First, freshman Carly O’Connell grabbed a pass from Shannon Propst and shot the ball past Trojan keeper Liz Shaeffer for her 12th goal of the season. Then, Milner scored her second goal of the game thanks to another assist by Propst. Propst’s first two assists were her 20th and 21st of the season. The second assist gave her 52 for her career and moved her past Alison Leiner (51) for sixth place on Oregon’s all-time assist chart. At the 15:50 mark, the Ducks grabbed their first lead of the game courtesy of an unassisted goal by Olivia Pyne. But back-to-back goals by Caroline de Lyra and a free position goal by Amanda Johansen sparked a 3-0 USC run to put the Trojans up 6-4. But the seesaw battle continued. With 7:54 left in the half, Devon Frazer scored her ninth goal of the season to make it a 6-5 game and Casey Brogan tied things up with her fourth tally of the year with 3:06 to play. However, USC carried a 7-6 advantage into the break after Cordrey was able to capitalize on an Oregon foul and bury a shot into the goal with 40 seconds to go. The Ducks came out firing in the second half. Milner scored back-to-back goals to put her team back up, 8-7, with 22:17 to go. Over the last 22 minutes of the game, though, USC out-scored the Ducks 5-2. Milner’s goal with 22:17 on the clock marked Oregon’s final lead of the game. Cordrey’s third goal of the night tied the score at eight with 21:25 left and Bonomi put home an unassisted goal with 20:30 remaining to put the Trojans up (9-8). Then, Cordrey scored her fourth goal with 18:11 left to give USC a 10-8 edge. Oregon battled back to tie the game at 10 with 11:27 to go thanks to a goal at the 16:48 mark by Sami Kiser off of Propst’s third assist of the day and a free position goal by Milner, her fifth of the night. Then, Haleigh Dalmass put the Trojans up for good, 11-10, at the 10:39 mark. De Lyra added an insurance goal with 1:51 left to put the game out of reach. Milner’s five goals paced the Ducks. Pyne, Kiser, Brogan, O’Connell and Frazer were responsible for Oregon’s five other tallies. Propst finished the game with three assists, Nikki Puszcz had a team-high three draw controls and goalie Caroline Federighi made five saves and caused two turnovers in 42:18 of action. USC won the draw control battle, 13-11, and out-shot the Ducks, 20-19. Both teams took care of the ball; USC had six turnovers and the Ducks had just five. Both teams were perfect in clear attempts and USC had seven ground balls to Oregon’s four.

RECAP: A 6-0 second-half run pushed the California Golden Bears past the Oregon Ducks in Eugene. Junior Shannon Propst, who now has 57 career assists, set a new career-high in the assists category (4) in the loss. By doing so, Propst passed Ilsa van den Berg (54 career assists) for fifth place on Oregon’s all-time assists list and tied Jen May (57), now an assistant coach for the Ducks, for fourth all-time. Propst added a goal on the day as well to give her a career-best five points. Additionally, freshman Carly O’Connell scored a career-high four goals, dished out three assists and ended the day with seven points, the highest output of her young career. Another career milestone for Oregon was posted by junior defender Erika McCool, who caused a career-best four turnovers. California was led by 2012 MPSF Player of the Year Megan Takacs, who scored four goals, had five draw controls and scooped up two ground balls. The Ducks trailed 5-3 at the break after taking two one-goal leads (2-1 and 3-2) in the opening frame. In the second, California rattled off the first two goals to take a 7-3 advantage. The Golden Bears led 8-4 with 23:53 to go, but Oregon went on a 2-0 run thanks to goals by Sami Kiser and O’Connell that made it an 8-6 game with 21:15 to go. But an Oregon red card at the 20:38 mark in the second half gave California a two-minute unreleasable man-up advantage. Takacs took advantage of the opportunity and scored two man-up goals to push the lead back up to four, 10-6, with 19:36 left. The Bears scored the next four as well, courtesy of Melissa Humphrey and Takacs to grab an eight-goal edge (14-6), with 7:52 remaining in the game. Oregon closed the gap to four by day’s end thanks to three goals by O’Connell and one by sophomore Devon Frazer. California won the draw control battle (15-11) and had 14 ground balls to Oregon’s eight. Oregon took three fewer shots than California (28-25) but committed just 10 turnovers to the Bears’ 17. In addition, California converted five of its seven free position attempts, while the Ducks went 2-of-5.

Season In Review Review

RECAP: Freshman Carly O’Connell set a school record with 10 draw controls and the Oregon Ducks cruised to a 19-9 win over Saint Mary’s in Eugene. O’Connell’s 10 draw controls broke the previous mark of eight, set by Jen May in 2005. In addition, O’Connell scored three goals and added an assist. She was one of four players who posted a hat-trick on Senior Day in Eugene; Hayley Milner finished with a game-high four goals, Shannon Propst scored three and handed out four assists and Nikki Puszcz punched home two goals and added two assists. For Propst, it was the second-straight game where she recorded seven points. She scored five goals and had two assists in Wednesday’s (April 10) win at Fresno State. Oregon scored six of the game’s first seven goals to grab a 6-1 edge just over nine minutes into the game. O’Connell and Propst accounted for four of the team’s first six goals. Saint Mary’s mounted a comeback, however. Over the next 11 minutes, the Gaels went on a 5-2 run to cut the Oregon lead to two, 8-6, with 8:41 left in the first half. But Oregon responded with a critical 6-0 run to push the lead back to eight, 14-6, with 28:27 left in the game. The 6-0 run was sparked by Ashley Inman, who scored the first goal of the run with 6:57 left in the opening half. Milner, Propst, two Puszcz goals and O’Connell accounted for the other five. The first of Puszcz’s two goals during the run gave the Ducks a 12-6 lead heading into the locker room. Oregon’s healthy eight-goal lead at the 28:27 mark in the second half was never really challenged by the Gaels the rest of the way. Saint Mary’s pulled to within seven (15-8) when Jillian Chong scored a goal with 10:23 to go but could not draw any closer. Two Milner goals and one by Holly Johnson, the first goal of her collegiate career, highlighted a 4-1 Oregon run to close the game. Oregon’s 19 goals were season-high. O’Connell’s record-setting draw control number were 10 of 22 for the day for the Ducks. Saint Mary’s managed just eight. Oregon out-shot the Gaels, 31-24 as well. Junior goalie Caroline Federighi made eight saves for Oregon in her 38:41 minutes of action. Senior Salliebeth Finnegan made two saves in 21:19 minutes of play. The victory over Saint Mary’s marked the final home regular season game for six Oregon seniors — Inman, Finnegan, Kate Cathell, Maggie Kovacs, Bridget Morrison and Dominique Christiansen.

Oregon junior Shannon Propst continued her stellar play, scoring a career-high five goals, dishing out two assists and totaling a career-best seven points against the Bulldogs. Propst’s first assist of the day, the 58th of her career, went to Sami Kiser at the 19:39 mark in the first half and it moved Propst past Jen May for fourth on Oregon’s all-time assist list. Propst’s five goals are tied for the most goals scored by a Duck in a single game this year. Devon Frazer, Ashley Inman and Olivia Pyne were responsible for Oregon’s other three goals. Inman, a senior, matched a career-high three assists today as well. After falling behind 1-0 less than four minutes into the game, Oregon responded by scoring the next seven goals to take a 7-1 lead with 16:17 remaining in the first half. But Fresno State kept the game close and out-scored the Ducks 4-2 over the final 16 minutes of the half to cut the deficit to four (9-5) heading into the locker room. Oregon won the draw control battle, 20-8, and out-shot the Bulldogs, 28-18. Caroline Federighi and Salliebeth Finnegan split the time in goal for Oregon. Federighi made four saves in the second half, while Finnegan posted two in the first.

RECAP: Oregon junior Shannon Propst posted seven points (three goals, four assists) in Oregon’s 15-8 win at UC Davis. Her point total against the Aggies moved her overall total to 66 for the season, which is the new single-season record at Oregon. Propst (66 points; 27 goals, 39 assists) passes Alex Breiner and Ilsa van den Berg, who each recorded 64 points in 2011 and 2008, respectively. Oregon never trailed in the match. Senior Kate Cathell got the scoring started with back-to-back goals early in the first half and after a Carly O’Connell free position goal with 11:44 left, the Ducks led 3-0. UC Davis trimmed the lead to two, 3-1, with 7:51 to go in the first but the Ducks closed the half on a 3-0 run thanks to a goal by Nikki Puszcz and two by Propst. Oregon led 3-1 at the break; junior goalie Caroline Federighi stopped five Aggie shots in the first. Puszcz put the Ducks up six right out of the gate in the second half. Then, after an Aggie goal, Cathell punched home another to give the Ducks their six-goal advantage back (8-2) with 18:18 remaining. But minutes later, the Aggies manufactured a 3-0 run to crawl back into the match. Two of the goals were scored by Carly Voris, while Stephanie Guercio tallied the third. The run made it an 8-5 game with 16:03 remaining. Oregon regained its composure however and responded to the UC Davis run by scoring consecutive goals courtesy of Propst and O’Connell. With under 10 minutes to go, the Ducks led 10-5. Then, another goal by O’Connell and one more by Puszcz gave the Ducks a 12-5 lead with under seven minutes to go to put the game out of reach. UC Davis didn’t pull any closer than six the rest of the way. Devon Frazer, Courtney Valdez and Sami Kiser picked up goals for the Ducks to wrap up the match. O’Connell, Cathell, Propst and Puszcz each posted three goals to pace the Ducks. Oregon won the draw control battle, 13-12, but were out-shot by the Aggies, 27-25. Federighi put together a stellar performance in goal, saving 12 shots in 55:57 of action.
