REVIEW

SUMMING UP 2010 IN JUST A YEAR’S TIME Oregon improved its record from 14-42 in 2009 to 40-24 in 2010. The 22-game improvement (difference in games won and difference in games lost divided by two) is the second-best recorded in the country since the NCAA began keeping the stat in 1998.The only team to better the mark was Florida Atlantic which improved from 29-30 in 1998, to 54-9 in 1999. THE NUMBERS ARE IMPRESSIVE The Ducks finished their season 9-6 against ranked opponents, and swept three non-conference weekend series. Oregon also finished 3-3 against No. 1 ranked teams, and won five Pac-10 series - including three (#22 Stanford, #1 UCLA and Washington) on the road - during the 2010 season. Awayfromhome againstrankedopponents, UO accumulated a 7-4 mark. GEORGE HORTON Oregon head coach George Horton made 70

his 12th appearance in the postseason after taking the Ducks to the Norwich Regional in just the second season since the program was reinstated. Horton made 11 trips to the playoffs in his 11 years at the helm of Cal State Fullerton, and in his Division I head coaching career has missed the postseason only once - his first year with UO in 2009. Horton now has a 57-28 record in his 12 postseason appearances, advancing out of the regional round on seven occasions, and winning the 2004 College World Series Championship. The Ducks made massive improvements under Horton’s watch; improving their batting average from .227 to .292, improving a 5.07 ERA to 3.29, more than doubling its run total from 158 to 376, and nearly doubling extrabase hits from 84 to 164. The Ducks, who finished 10th in the Pac-10 in 2009 and were predicted to do so again in the preseason poll, tied for fifth in the 2010 standings. The 40-24 record also marked the eighth time in his 13 years at the Division I level, that Horton reached a 40-win season.

2010 SEASON REVIEW was also aggressive with base runners, leading the league with 18 pick offs. TYLER ANDERSON Sophomore left-hander Tyler Anderson became the first Oregon player since 1971 to be named to the Pac-10 All-Conference team. The southpaw finished the season with a 7-5 record and 2.98 ERA (5th Pac-10). The Fridaynight starter, Anderson held opposing batters to a .219 clip (6th Pac-10), and led the staff with 105 strikeouts (6th Pac-10) - a new Oregon single-season record. His effort earned him an invite to the 2010 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Trials. JUSTIN LATEMPA Justin LaTempa was named to the Norwich Regional All-Tournament Team, and was then drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 12th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. LaTempa finished his season with a 6-3 record on the mound, a 3.65 ERA and 68 strikeouts while holding opposing batters to a .252 average. He was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, and National Pitcher of the Week by several publications after pitching a one-hit, complete game shutout in a 6-0 victory over Washington State on May 2.

ZACK THORNTON Zack Thornton helped Oregon off to a solid start at the Norwich Regional after pitching six innings of two-run (one earned) baseball in the Ducks’5-3 victory over No. 17 Connecticut. Thornton missed out on his 10th win of the season as the game was knotted at 2-2 when he departed. Thornton, drafted in the 23rd round of the 2010 MLB Draft by the Oakland A’s, finished his senior year with a perfect record of 9-0. He was named Pac-10 Honorable Mention, and his nine wins tie an Oregon single-season record. SCOTT McGOUGH McGough emerged from the bullpen as one of Oregon’s top relievers during 2010 as he was named Pac-10 Honorable Mention, and was invited to the 2010 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Trials. McGough ended his year with a 5-2 record, four saves and a 2.45 ERA, striking out 56 batters in 58 and 1/3 innings on the mound. MADISON BOER After emerging as Oregon’s closer late in the season, sophomore Madison Boer was invited to the 2010 USA Baseball Collegiate NationalTeamTrials along with Anderson and McGough. A spot starter and middle reliever for most of the season, the Ducks tried Boer out at closer during the final weeks with fabulous results. Boer led the staff with five saves, claiming saves in UO’s

final five wins of the season. Boer finished his sophomore year with a 3-1 record and 2.44 ERA. In his final five appearances on the mound in save situations, Boer posted a 1.29 ERA in seven innings of work, while completing all five stops. He dealt six strikeouts and walked no one, while allowing just one earned run to cross the plate and leaving all five of his inherited runners stranded. OFFENSIVE OVERHAUL After batting just .227 in 2009, Oregon’s offense recovered for a respectable showing in 2010. The Ducks batted .292 (6th Pac-10) on the year, and totaled 624 hits (4th Pac-10). The Ducks finished third in the Pac-10 with 120 doubles, and were aggressive on the base paths stealing 73 bases (4th Pac-10). MIDDLE INFIELD Sophomores Danny Pulfer and KC Serna emerged to lead the Ducks’middle infield in 2010. Serna, UO’s starting shortstop was named Pac-10 Honorable Mention, and was named to the Norwich Regional All-TournamentTeam before spending his summer playing in the prestigious Cape Cod League. NOTES: Oregon brought the rain to southern California and it worked out nicely as the Ducks upset fourth-ranked Cal State Fullerton 7-3... In Horton’s return to Fullerton, he picked up his 265th win at Goodwin Field, after a monster sixth inning and special performances on the mound from starter Tyler Anderson and reliever Scott McGough... the difference was a three-run inning in the sixth as freshman right fielder Jack Marder was issued a four-pitch walk from Cal State Fullerton starter Daniel Renken to lead it off. Two batters later, freshman first baseman Ryan Hambright connected on a one-out single on the hit-and-run to put runners on first and third. Renken struck out senior catcher Eddie Rodriguez for the second out of the inning, but sophomore second baseman Danny Pulfer stood in and laced a tworun double to deep right field to score the go-ahead run. Anderson pitched 5 and 2/3 innings on the mound surrendering three runs on four hits on three walks while also striking out three on 87 pitches. Scott McGough pitched the final three and 1/3 innings for the save, holding the Titans scoreless on three hits while dealing four strikeouts.

NOTES: Oregon outhit Long Beach State 11-7, led by KC Serna’s 3-for4 performance while J.J. Altobelli, Jack Marder and Danny Pulfer also had multiple-hit days in a 6-2 victory over Long Beach State. The Ducks went ahead 5-1 after the top of the sixth as Oregon began to knock around Long Beach State starter Andrew Gagnon. Ryan Hambright was issued a one-out walk in the sixth, and moved to second on a slow infield dribbler sent to the shortstop from Pulfer. With two outs, Altobelli hammered a two-run double into right field and advanced to third as Long Beach State’s defense tried to throw Pulfer out at the plate. Curtis Raulinaitis then singled up the middle bringing Altobelli home for the inning’s third run as the Ducks took a 5-2 lead. Justin LaTempa, who was making his first start in two years due to injury went 4 and 2/3 innings on the mound, surrendering one unearned run. He allowed three hits but issued four walks and hit three batters. Keudell came on to claim the win, pitching three and 1/3 innings and allowing just one run on three hits while striking out two.

NOTES: Oregon made a valiant comeback, but defensive errors proved too costly as the Ducks fell 11-7 to Pepperdine on Sunday at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Ducks trailed the Waves just 14-12 for hits on the day, but UO committed five errors to Pepperdine’s one. Pepperdine dinged up Oregon freshman starter Christian Jones early putting three runs on the board in the first and another three in the second as Oregon’s defense also struggled committing three early errors. Jones, a lefty, took the loss and lasted three and 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs (only three earned) on eight hits and one walk, while striking out two. Pepperdine’s Robert Dickmann, a lefty as well, held the Ducks to three earned runs on eight hits, pitching seven innings in the win and striking out three. Pepperdine freshman Joe Sever was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with a triple and four runs scored.

NOTES: Oregon proved on Monday afternoon why the club may be worthy of its No. 25 ranking from Collegiate Baseball with a powerful offensive showing in a 12-3 win over Loyola Marymount. The Ducks totaled 12 runs on 11 hits, while limiting the Lions to three runs on seven hits. Danny Pulfer led the way for Oregon with a 3-for-5 day, four RBIs and three runs scored. Senior center fielder Curtis Raulinaitis was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Jack Marder and and KC Serna also had multiple hit games. Sophomore Scott McGough made his second appearance of this opening weekend coming on to get the final out of the sixth in relief of starter Zack Thornton. In his second UO career win, McGough pitched two and 1/3 innings, holding the Lions scoreless on one hit and one walk. Matt Florer took the loss after surrendering the go-ahead run plus one without giving up an out. He allowed two runs on one hit while facing just two batters. In the start, LMU’s Gillingham pitched six innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits and two walks while striking out five. Oregon starter Zack Thornton lasted five and 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three.

Oregon starter Tyler Anderson walked the leadoff batter, Breland Almadova, but looked to be out of danger after retiring the next two. He struck out Kevin Macdonald for the third and final out, but the ball got past catcher Eddie Rodriguez to keep the inning alive as Macdonald took first on a passed ball. With runners at first and third, Collin Bennett’s infield single scored Almadova unearned for the game’s first run. Davis Freitas was then walked to load the bases, and a wild pitch allowed Macdonald to score from third as Hawai’i took a 2-0 lead. The ‘Bows (2-3) added the third run of the inning when Bennett scored on a J.J. Altobelli error. All three runs were unearned. Anderson (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs – only one earned – on four hits in five innings of action. The Las Vegas native struggled with control, walking six batters, but striking out eight. Hawai’i added the insurance run it would need in the fifth when Jeffrey VanDoornum hit a solo shot over the wall in right. Klein (1-0) pitched six innings in the win and faced 26 batters, allowing three earned runs on seven hits, two walks and one strikeout. Lenny Linksy tossed the eighth and ninth innings, holding Oregon hitless and striking out three.

The Ducks went into the top of the ninth trailing 2-1, but things looked promising as freshman Ryan Hambright singled off Hawai’i closer Lenny Linsky to lead off the inning. Jett Hart came on to pinch run, and Eddie Rodriguez executed the sacrifice bunt to move Hart into scoring position. But freshman Steven Packard grounded out to third and Danny Pulfer sent one right back to Linsky, who made the play to first for his second save of the series and season. Matt Sisto improved to 1-1 on the year, pitching six innings and holding the Ducks to one run on three hits and three walks. Alex Capaul pitched two innings of relief, holding Oregon hitless and facing only one batter over the minimum, before Linsky came on in the ninth for the save. LaTempa (0-1) took the loss for Oregon tossing six innings, and allowing two runs on six and two walks. He faced 26 batters and struck out six. Ryan Fleckenstein and Joey Housey both appeared in relief. All four Oregon hits came from true freshmen: Hambright (2), Marder and Altobelli.

2010 GAME-BY-GAME CAPSULES get the final out of the sixth after Alex Keudell faced two batters in relief of Oregon starter Scott McGough. Greg Garcia’s RBI single was sent right back up the middle to score Almadova as the ‘Bows took a 3-2 advantage. Kolten Wong then reached on an infield single, but Garcia was erased on Macdonald’s attempt at a sacrifice as Fleckenstein came off the mound to make the play at third. After his defensive effort, Fleckenstein was relieved with two runners on and one out by sophomore right-hander Madison Boer, who was making his first appearance of the year. Collin Bennett then tagged a one-run double down the left field line to score Wong and move Macdonald to third. David Freitas’ sacrifice fly scored the third and final run of the inning as Macdonald tagged up and scored as Hawai’i took a 5-2 advantage. Fleckenstein took the loss for Oregon after surrendering three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings of relief. In the first start of his career, McGough lasted 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three. Danny Pulfer led the Ducks with a 3-for-4 day and one RBI, while Raulinaitis was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Capaul (2-0) recorded the win for Hawai’i pitching four innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits while striking out three. Oregon scored four runs while piling on six hits in the first as Washington starter Ben Guidos faced the entire UO batting order in the first inning. Coupled with another great outing from sophomore right-hander Alex Keudell, Oregon’s first inning held the Ducks’ lead for the following eight. Keudell, now 2-0, tossed seven innings in his first start of the season and held the Huskies to two runs on six hits and three walks. The Portland native also fell one strikeout shy of matching his career high, fanning six Husky batters. Joey Housey pitched the final two innings for Oregon, facing the minimum and not allowing a hit or issuing a walk while fanning a career-best three. Guidos (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and one walk. Oregon totaled 10 hits on the day led by Rodriguez’s career-best 3-for-4 outing.

NOTES: Oregon ended its series with Hawai’i and snapped a threegame losing streak with a 3-0, seven-inning, shutout victory over the Rainbows...It was the fourth game of the series for Hawai’i (4-4) and Oregon (4-4)...In the fourth, US starter Sam Spangler loaded the bases again as a two-out UO rally was spurred by Shawn Peterson. The Eugene native hit a single to right center, and Jett Hart kept things going with a single through the left side. Spangler then struck KC Serna to load the bases with two outs for Danny Pulfer. The two battled to a full count, and Spangler offered ball four to walk in Peterson for a 1-0 lead. That ended Spangler’s night as right-hander Connor Little was brought in for relief with the bases again loaded. On a 1-1 count, Little struck Jack Marder to score Hart as Oregon took a 2-0 advantage. Little’s first offering to Nick Wagner was a wild pitch, allowing Serna to score from third. Little then regained his composure to strike out Wagner, leaving Pulfer and Marder stranded. In the sixth Hawai’i looked to threaten with two runners on, but Drew Gagnier came on in relief of Oregon starter Zack Thornton, and struck out Collin Bennett to record the third out of the inning as the ‘Bows left two on. Thornton picked up his first win of the season tossing 5 and 1/3 innings and holding Hawai’i scoreless on two hits and two walks while striking out five. Spangler (0-2) took the loss for UH after allowing three runs on five hits and two walks in three and 2/3 innings of work.

NOTES: KC Serna had three hits, J.J. Altobelli tripled and scored three runs and Alex Keudell picked up his second victory on the mound this week to lead the University of Oregon to an 8-3 win Sunday, sending the Ducks to a four-game series sweep of the host Bulldogs. Keudell improved to 3-0 on the season, allowing two runs - one earned - in 6 1/3 innings of work. He struck out four and walked no one. The Ducks went on top for the first time with a single run in the sixth and never looked back. Altobelli doubled in a run in the seventh and scored on Serna’s third hit of the day for a 5-2 lead. A two-run homer from Marcus Piazzisi in the eighth extended the Oregon advantage to 7-2, and Altobelli led off the ninth with a triple and came home on a single by Curtis Raulinaitis for UO’s final run. Madison Boer was outstanding in relief of Keudell, allowing an unearned run in 2 2/3 innings of work. Boer gave up two hits while striking out five. Poor defense plagued the Bulldogs throughout the series and Sunday’s finale was no different. The home team committed five more errors, leading to three unearned runs. Southpaw Josh Poytress (1-1) started and took the loss, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing four runs on six hits. Only two of the runs allowed by Poytress were earned.

NOTES: Thornton pitched the first game, striking out 10 batters in 7 2/3 innings without allowing a walk. KC Serna started the bats in the opener, driving home J.J. Altobelli with a single to left field for the game’s first run in the bottom of the third. The Ducks plated two more in the fourth on RBIs from Shawn Peterson and Altobelli, and tacked on a three-spot in the fifth, highlighted by a steal of home by Jett Hart to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Seattle scratched for single runs in the seventh and ninth, sandwiched around a run-scoring single by UO’s Marder. Lefty Conor Splink (0-3) took the loss for the Redhawks, allowing six runs on nine hits over five complete.

NOTES: Tyler Anderson scattered three hits over eight innings as the University of Oregon rode a four-run first to an efficient 5-0 win over Seattle University. Oregon’s southpaw starter improved to 3-1, striking out 11 Redhawks without issuing a walk in his second straight dominating start while running his scoreless inning streak to 16. The Ducks (10-5) took advantage of a very shaky start by Seattle University right hander Blaine Jones (0-2), who issued five first-inning walks that led to four runs. Eddie Rodriguez started the UO offense with a two-run single and scored on a double by Steven Packard. Joey Housey pitched a perfect ninth to preserved the Ducks’ fifth straight victory and seventh in their last eight games. The four hits in the game matched a season-low, but Oregon made up for that by drawing a season-high nine walks. Stephen Kaupang and Shawn Peterson had two walks apiece, and Jack Marder and Hart each had a hit and a walk.

NOTES: A vigorous offensive attack early on put Oregon in the driver’s seat as the Ducks opened their four-game series with Nevada posting a 16-2 victory. In front of a crowd of 2,774 – a season high – the Ducks (13-6) tallied 12 runs in the first three innings as Nevada (10-7) starter Tyler Graham (1-3) exited the game in third after surrendering nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits in two an 1/3 innings. Oregon’s 16 runs were the most in the modern era, and the highest total for the program since a 16-4 win over Lewis & Clark on May 4, 1976; tying for ninth all-time in program history. The Ducks’ 14 hits were the most for UO since a 12-8 loss to Portland on April 14, 2009. As Oregon led 12-0 in the seventh, Oregon freshman Jack Marder crushed his second homer of the season – a three run shot - over the wall in left center. Marder finished his day 3-for-5 with eight RBI – a new modern era record. Oregon left-hander Tyler Anderson earned his third consecutive win to improve to 4-1 on the season. The Las Vegas native went five innings deep without giving up a run – extending his scoreless streak to 21 innings, before allowing single spots in the sixth and seventh. Anderson finished his day tossing seven innings and scattering five hits, while issuing just one walk and allowing only two runs. The staff ace struck out four to bring his season total to 36.

The Ducks tallied 12 runs on nine hits, and were issued 11 walks – the most in modern era history – by the Nevada staff. Sophomore right-hander Scott McGough picked up his third win of the season, pitching the final 4 and 1/3 innings of the game in relief of starter Zack Thornton. McGough held the Wolf Pack to two runs on four hits in his time on the mound while striking out two, facing just 16 batters. NOTES: Jett Bandy homered and scored twice, and freshman Kurt Heyer allowed two runs over six innings to back Arizona’s 9-3 Pac-10 victory over Oregon in the conference opener for both teams. The Ducks got a four-hit performance from Marcus Piazzisi and a strong relief effort from Zack Thornton, but the Wildcats fast start with six runs over the first two innings was too much for the visitors to overcome. Oregon starter Tyler Anderson (4-2) didn’t make it out of the second, allowing six runs - four earned - on seven hits and a pair of walks in 1.2 innings of work. Thornton saved the bullpen by pitching closing out the game, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings. All but one starter had at least one hit for the Wildcats, who banged out 14 hits in all. Bryce Ortega was 3 for 4 and Steve Selsky went 2 for 4 with three runs scored. Heyer (4-0) surrendered only one earned run and struck out five as Arizona extended its winning streak to 14 straight. Steven Packard hit his first collegiate home run to lead off the top of the second.

GAME 25 (ARIZONA 8, OREGON 4) NOTES: Oregon completed its second series sweep of the season, shutting out Nevada, 5-0. The Portland native scattered four hits and walked two while reaching a new career high with nine strikeouts. Also pitching in the combined shutout was freshman lefty Christian Jones and sophomore right-hander Joey Housey. NOTES: Oregon scored eight runs over the final two innings to lead the Ducks to a miraculous comeback victory, 9-6, over No. 22 Stanford. Oregon trailed 6-1 entering the eighth as they struggled to figure out Stanford starter Jordan Pries for seven long innings. But Pries’ effort and win was squandered by his bullpen, as three Stanford relievers combined to allow eight runs on five hits, three walks and two errors. It was quite the opposite for the Ducks, as Zack Thornton was near flawless in his relief effort. The right-hander improved to 5-0 on the season, allowing just one run on four hits and no walks. The senior struck out four, while pitching 4 and 2/3 innings of relief. Ducks closer Drew Gagnier came on in the ninth and held the Cardinal scoreless to pick up his fourth save of the year. The comeback also marked the second time this year Oregon has erased a five-run lead against a Pac-10 opponent. Oregon accomplished a similar feat, knocking off Arizona, 9-8, on the road back on March 28. Jack Marder had four RBIs in the final two innings and finished his day 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Alex Pracher (4-2) took the loss allowing five runs – four earned – on four hits and one walk. Oregon starter Justin LaTempa lasted three and 1/3 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits and one walk before Thornton took over during the fourth.

NOTES: It came down to the final strike, but Scott McGough wasn’t about to let all his hard work go to waste as the sophomore reliever got UCLA’s Cody Keefer to swing at strike three as the Ducks upset No.1 UCLA, 5-4. UCLA had runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth, but McGough struck out Keefer to keep victory in the grasp of Oregon. The final four innings of the game were scoreless for both teams, as UCLA brought on a slew of relievers, and the Ducks relied on McGough. The Pittsburgh native came on in the fifth with two outs and a runner on, and although he hit one batter, McGough got the third out and was nearly unflappable the rest of the way. On his way to his fourth win of the season, the sophomore right-hander tossed four and 1/3 innings of relief holding a offense that came into the game hitting .331, scoreless and to just three knocks while fanning four. McGough was pitching in relief of starter Tyler Anderson, who ran into trouble in the fifth. Anderson finished his outing allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five. For Gerrit Cole, who took his first lost of the season and fell to 6-1, the right-hander went five innings allowing a season-high five runs on a season-high eight hits. He walked four and struck out five. Eddie Rodriguez finished the game 2-for-5 for the Ducks, while Packard was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Hambright was 2-for-3 with a RBI, and Raulinaitis was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Both Marder and Piazzisi were 1-for-4 with a RBI and run scored. Dunlap had a homer and double as the leadoff hitter for UCLA, while Espy was 2-for-5 with a round-tripper as well.

NOTES: The 18th-ranked Oregon Ducks produced their best offensive outing since reinstatement on Wednesday, defeating Gonzaga 19-10 at the Patterson Baseball Complex. Oregon faced five Gonzaga pitchers, and tied a program single-game record with 25 hits. The feat was only accomplished once before vs. Portland State on May 6, 1974. The Ducks 19 runs were the most for the program in the modern era, and tied for the fourth largest total all-time. UO totaled nine extra base hits for the game with four home runs and five doubles. The Ducks’ four home runs were a new single-game record for the modern era. Right-hander Madison Boer (2-1) took the win in a controlled start, tossing four innings and allowing four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two. Christian Jones, Kellen Moen, Hambright, Ryan Fleckenstein and Drew Gagnier also appeared in relief. Gonzaga starter Jacob Brown (0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits and one walk in just one and 2/3 innings of work.

NOTES: EUGENE, Ore. – Another extra-inning win wasn’t in the cards for No. 18 Oregon as the Ducks left the tying and go-ahead runs stranded in the bottom of the 10th as USC evened the series with a 5-4 win in front of 3,213. In an uncommon episode this season for the Ducks, Oregon’s relief pitchers allowed four runs in the final four innings of the game. Starter Justin LaTempa was in line for the win after tossing six innings of one-run baseball, allowing six hits while fanning six, and leaving the game with a narrow 2-1 lead. Mike O’Neill led USC with a 4-for-6 outing, scoring two runs in addition to his 10th-inning RBI. USC totaled 15 hits on the day – the most Oregon has surrendered in a single game this season. Gagnier (0-1) took the loss for the Ducks after allowing the game winning-run on one hit and two walks in the 10th. In the bottom of the 10th, Mezger issued a one-out walk to Rodriguez, followed by a base hit to Steven Packard, putting the winning run on first. But Mezger regrouped to strike out Marder and coax a fly out from Dylan Gavin. Mezger improved 4-0 on the season, pitching two scoreless innings of relief. USC starter Ben Mount went seven innings on the hill, allowing just two unearned runs in four hits while fanning four.

The Ducks totaled 11 hits on the day, and were aggressive on the bases as UO had a 7-0 lead after four innings. The Ducks were led at the plate by KC Serna, Marcus Piazzisi, Steven Packard and Jack Marder. Serna was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Piazzisi was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two triples. NOTES: Senior right-hander Justin LaTempa was nearly untouchable on Saturday night at PK Park, tossing a complete-game, one-hit shutout as the No. 17 Ducks evened their series with the Cougars after a 6-0 victory. LaTempa threw the first complete game of his collegiate career at Oregon, and also dealt a career-high 10 strikeouts as a record crowd of 3,791 cheered him on. LaTempa’s complete game shutout was the first thrown by an Oregon pitcher since the program was reinstated, and was also the second complete game tossed this season, as Tyler Anderson threw nine innings of one-run baseball back on April 1 in a loss to No. 1 Arizona State. LaTempa threw seven innings of no-hit baseball until WSU’s Matt Argyroppulos led off the eighth with a shallow double to right that fell just a few feet fair of the right field line. NOTES: Washington State scored three runs in the final two innings to claim a 3-2 comeback victory over No. 17 Oregon on Friday night at PK Park. The Ducks had a 2-0 lead going into the eighth as starter Tyler Anderson had thrown seven innings of scoreless baseball. As the lefty’s pitch count climbed into triple digits, Washington State’s Garry Kuykendall started the rally with a one-out double to right center. Matt Fanelli then cut UO’s lead to 2-1, driving a RBI triple off the wall in right center. With Fanelli representing the tying run sitting just 90 feet away at third, the coaching staff elected to keep Anderson on the mound. The lefty then surrendered the game-tying run as Michael Weber dropped a RBI single into shallow right allowing Fanelli to score. With McGough on the mound in the top of the ninth, Matt Argyropoulos placed a bunt down the third base line that Oregon third baseman J.J. Altobelli bare-handed. The freshman’s throw was wide of first, allowing Argyropoulos to make his way to second. Shea Vucinich then grounded out to move Argyropoulos to third, leaving the go-ahead run at third with just one out on the board. Pinch-hitting, Patrick Claussen’s sacrifice fly to left brought Argyropoulos home unearned before Bartlett was retired as the Ducks went into the bottom of the ninth trailing 3-2. Paris Shewey (5-1) was credited with the win for the Cougars after pitching one inning of scoreless baseball in the eighth. NOTES: After a night of solid pitching and defense, No. 15 Oregon’s first mistake cost the Ducks in the bottom of the 10th as Oregon State took the first game of the Civil War Series, 2-1. In the bottom of the 10th, Andrew Susac and Carter Bell were put on base by Oregon reliever Scott McGough as he hit both batters on two consecutive pitches. Michael Miller came to the plate and fouled off to bunt attempts before hitting one back to McGough. The right-hander came off the mound to field the infield bunt, and made the play at second, but as shortstop KC Serna attempted to turn the double play, Oregon had no one covering first. Serna’s throw sailed out of play allowing Brent Warren – pinch running for Susac – to score the game-winning run on the error. McGough (4-2) took the loss for the Ducks allowing one unearned run on no hits and two walks in two and 1/3 innings on the mound. Oregon State used right-hander Kevin Rhoderick to pitch the final two and 1/3 innings, as the closer improved to 2-1 on the season holding Oregon scoreless on two hits and one walk while striking out five.

NOTES: Another extra-inning thriller ended poorly for No. 15 Oregon as the winning run crossed the plate on a wild pitch leading Oregon State to a 4-3 victory in 11 innings on Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium. The Ducks outhit the Beavers 13-6, but left 14 runners stranded through 11 innings – one short of a season high. OSU held Oregon scoreless through eight innings and led 3-0 when the Ducks staged a three-run rally in the top of the ninth. Oregon State took advantage in the bottom of the 11th inning as Andrew Susac singled off UO reliever Alex Keduell. Ryan Barnes pinch ran for Susac, and moved to second on Rob Folsom’s single. The Ducks brought right-hander Joey Housey on the mound, and Tyler Smith put a slow roller in play that pulled Housey off the mound. His throw to first pulled Marder off the bag as Smith loaded the bases on the error. A wild pitch then got past Eddie Rodriguez as Barnes scored the game winner unearned.

NOTES: Portland’s Chris Johnson was flawless in his seven innings on the mound, as No. 15 Oregon’s offense was unresponsive in a 3-1 loss to the Pilots. Johnson, who improves to 3-1 on the year, tossed seven innings of scoreless baseball , scattering four hits and walking one, while striking out five. Right-hander Joey Housey (2-1) took the loss for Oregon after being roughed up in the top of the first. Eddie Rodriguez made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, torching a one-out, solo home run to center on a 2-2 count, closing the score to 3-1. But that

NOTES: Rob Folsom’s walkoff RBI double to center completed Oregon State’s Pac-10 series sweep of No. 15 Oregon on Sunday at Goss Stadium as the Beavers defeated the Ducks 6-5. The Ducks erased a fourrun deficit in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 5-5, but Oregon reliever Drew Gagnier surrendered the walkoff double to Folsom that scored Stephen Romero to end the game in the bottom of the inning. Gagnier took the loss for Oregon after surrendering one run on two hits and one walk in 2/3 of an inning on the mound. Oregon State starter Sam Gaviglio held the Ducks to one-run through eight innings and looked to be in line for a complete game win before he ran into trouble in the top of the ninth. Gaviglio tossed eight and 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on 10 hits and two walks while striking out three. At one point Gaviglio retired 10 consecutive batters. Boyd improved to 6-1 after getting the final out of the top of the ninth. OSU tallied 14 hits on the day including solo home runs in the eighth inning from Jared Norris and Bell.

NOTES: No. 22 Oregon opened up its three-game series against East Tennessee State with a 5-0 shutout. Oregon’s win was the sixth shutout of the season for the Ducks. The Buccaneers came into the game averaging 9.0 per game. Oregon starter Tyler Anderson improved to 7-3 on the season, tossing 7 and 2/3 innings of shutout baseball. He allowed four hits and five walks, while striking out six. The Ducks tallied 10 hits led by Eddie Rodriguez’s 3-for-4, one RBI performance. Shawn Peterson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Dylan Gavin was 2-for-3 as well. ETSU starter Bo Reeder (3-5) took the loss after surrendering five runs – three earned – on nine hits and two walks in six innings on the mound.

NOTES: Oregon put a crooked number on the board in the first inning and never looked back in a 13-4 victory over No. 19 San Diego. Oregon scored 13 runs on 13 hits with four players posting multiple-hit days. Eddie Rodriguez, who finished his day 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs, uncorked his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the second inning, launching his solo shot not only over the left field wall, but clearing the visitor bullpen as well. The Ducks totaled six extra-base hits on Tuesday as Rodriguez homered and doubled, while Mitch Karraker, Nick Wagner and Piazzisi all produced doubles and Gavin tripled. Steven Packard was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Piazzisi was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Gavin recorded the third multiple-hit game of his career and tripled for the first time at Oregon on a 2-for-5 performance. In a controlled start, Joey Housey (3-1) was credited with the win after tossing three innings and allowing one run on four hits while dealing a career-high four strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Madsion Boer tossed four innings of scoreless baseball, holding the Toreros to two hits while striking out six – one short of his career high. San Diego freshman right-hander Mike Dedrick (1-1) lasted just 2/3 of an inning after allowing six runs on four hits and three walks.

WP - Madison Boer (3-1) LP - Bo Burton (7-5) T - 2:52 A: 2,865

NOTES: Mitch Karraker’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth capped No. 22 Oregon’s come-from-behind, 7-6, victory over East Tennessee State. With the tying run already across the plate in Andrew Mendenhall, speedster Jett Hart was sitting at second representing the game-winning run. Karraker lined a walk-off single into left as Hart took off early from second, scoring easily as the Ducks not only won the game – but the series as well. Madison Boer (3-1) was credited with the win for the Ducks after tossing 1 and 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball. Boer came on to record the final out of the eighth after the Buccaneers had scored three runs to take a 6-5 lead. Bo Burton (7-5) was credited with the loss after allowing two runs on six hits and two walks. The righthander had held UO scoreless for 4 and 2/3 innings before surrendering the game-tying and winning runs. ETSU starter Ben Booker allowed five runs – four earned - on 10 hits in 3 and 2/3 innings before Burton came on in the fourth to retire the final batter of the inning. Paul Eshleman was 3-for-5 to lead Oregon, while Danny Pulfer, Eddie Rodriguez, Gavin and McGough had two hits apiece.

NOTES: Chase Anselment’s walk-off two-run homer ended an 11-inning, four-hour plus marathon on Friday night at Husky Ballpark as Washington claimed a 13-11 victory over No. 22 Oregon. Sophomore Joey Housey (3-2) took the loss after starting the bottom of 11th on the mound, and surrendering the two-run round-tripper to Anselment. He was the sixth pitcher to appear for the Ducks. Washington trailed 7-5 entering the bottom of the ninth after the Ducks took their two-run lead by scoring three in the top of the seventh. Oregon reliever Scott McGough had pitched two scoreless innings and put UO in position for the win as the Ducks were just three outs away. But the Huskies staged a ninth-inning rally as McGough allowed back-to-singles. A Pierce Rankin bunt attempt moved the runners over on a sacrifice, and a throwing error from J.J. Altobelli at third allowed Doug Cherry to score and Caleb Brown to move to third. With runners on the corners and no outs, Julien Pollard’s sacrifice fly tied the game. The Ducks looked poised to finally clinch the victory after unleashing a four-run inning in the top of the 10th as Shawn Peterson led things off with a double to right field off Washington reliever Ben Guidos. Altobelli’s sacrifice bunt off reliever Forrest Snow moved Gavin – pinch running for Peterson – to third, setting up Jett Hart’s RBI bunt single to put Oregon ahead. KC Serna continued the rally with a single to left and moved to second as Washington threw home, expecting Hart to move past third. With run-

The Ducks looked to Drew Gagnier for the save, but he surrendered a two–run double to Cherry, followed by a two-run homer to Brown as the Huskies tied the game, 11-11. Oregon was held scoreless in the top of the 11th by right-hander Andrew Kittredge before Anselment launched his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the inning. Kittredge (7-5) was credited with the win after holding the Ducks scoreless on one hit. Washington’s 13 runs were the most Oregon has surrendered to an opponent this season, while the Huskies 20 hits were the most the Ducks have allowed since reinstatement.

NOTES: There is no place like home, and back in his home state, freshman Andrew Mendenhall led No. 22 Oregon to a 5-2 victory over Washington on Saturday afternoon at Husky Ballpark. In just his eighth start of the season, Mendenhall was 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and two RBIs – all career highs for the Kennewick, Wash., native. The starting left fielder also had a crucial catch in the fourth inning to preserve what was at the time, a slim one-run lead. Senior right-hander Justin LaTempa (5-2) did his part on the mound, allowing two earned runs on nine hits and one walk in six innings of work, while striking out four. Sophomore right-hander Madison Boer finished the job LaTempa started. In Boer’s three innings of relief, he faced just one batter over the minimum, allowing one hit while retiring the sides in order in the seventh and eighth innings. Boer issued two strikeouts on the way to his first save of the season. Geoff Brown (1-6) took the loss for Washington after allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits and two walks in four innings on the mound. NOTES: A spectacular day for Zack Thornton on the mound led the No. 22 Ducks to a come-from-behind, 5-2, victory on Sunday afternoon at Husky Ballpark. Thornton remained undefeated on the season at 8-0, tossing and 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing only one unearned run on five hits and two walks while striking out four. Thornton has now recorded the win in four of the Ducks’ five Pac-10 series clinching victories this year. The Ducks scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1

lead that was sparked by a one-out rally. In the bottom of the ninth, Scott McGough took over on the hill surrendering a single to Caleb Brown. The outfielder moved to second on a stolen base, and to third on a passed ball, before scoring unearned on Eric Peterson’s RBI groundout. McGough then allowed a single and issued a walk to bring the tying run to the plate, and the Ducks brought right-hander Madison Boer out of the bullpen. Oregon trailed 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but Eddie Rodriguez erased that deficit with one swing of the bat. J.J. Altobelli’s two-out single through the left side got the rally started and Jack Marder’s two-out double to left put runners on second and third for Rodriguez. In his last game at PK Park, Rodriguez drove Chris Petrini’s first pitch of the at-bat over the wall in left center to tie the game at 5-5, and record his team-leading seventh home run. It was also Rodriguez’s first and only hit of the three-game series with Cal. Oregon then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth after Danny Pulfer singled off Cal reliever Erik Johnson. Danny Pulfer moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Steven Packard’s pinch-hit, RBI single to left put the Ducks ahead 6-5 for their first lead of the series. In the top of the eighth, Oregon brought Boer out of the bullpen to do a little clean-up work for Scott McGough. With Chadd Krist at first and one out on the board, a passed ball moved Krist – the tying run – over to second.
