The John E. Jaqua Center for Student Athletes at the University of Oregon explores the limits of transparency and connectivity to provide the UO’s studentathletes a place to gather as a community focused on study and learning. The challenge of creating a tranquil environment where students feel connected to natural landscape elements and daylight was heightened by the chosen location: a busy intersection between campus and the city of Eugene, on the site of a former parking lot at one of the major campus entrances. PROGRAM This new 40,000sq state-of-the-art academic learning center accommodates the NCAA-mandated academic services for the tutoring of 520 student athletes. The first f floor also includes staff offices and shared tutor areas for fo student-athlete/general student body group sessions. The two floors above are for the exclusive use s of o Oregon’s student-athletes and staff and require secure access. DONOR D The T facility is the result of a generous gift from Phil and a Penny Knight to encourage academic achievement along with athletic performance. The buildm ing in is named after John E. Jaqua, who was a varsity athlete at Pomona College, war hero, adored father/ a grandfather and longtime supporter of the Univerg sity si of Oregon. Jaqua’s legacy is meant to awaken every generation to look itself in the eye and be the e best b it can be, and his namesake represents a challenge to student-athletes to fulfill their promise. le Donor recognition in the facility is subtly treated, as D names are etched into glass on an entry wall panel. n

DESIGN CONCEPT Authenticity to the University of Oregon student experience was a key design driver. As is the celebration of the success of student-athletes in the pursuit of knowledge and athletic achievement, an atrium forms the “heart” of the building. The atrium walls are infused with graphic displays that relay the heritage of athletics at the University. It also includes a scoreboard-inspired wall listing upcoming tutorial appointments.
ated a from the University between 1945 and 2009.
Through the seamless integration of art, environmental graphics and architecture, the facility serves as a pantheon of student athletic achievements. For example, the “A Few Who Just Did It” wall celebrates the post-graduate academic achievements of notable former student-athletes, including the faces of author Ken Kesey, Nike co-founder Phil Knight and Ann Bancroft (the first woman to cross both the North and South Poles), engraved in 8x8 square oak blocks.
A student lounge area on the second floor is set on axis with the katsura maple tree t in the garden below. This axial move was carefully planned in order to provide v a sense of being at the tree top while in the space. Several ‘beanbag-like’ sofas are arranged throughout the room offering student respite. A custom s rug r covers the floor with a large supergraphic of a traditional University slogan used as part of its rivalry with the Oregon State Beavers, “When ducks fly beau vers…. ” The image across the rug depicts several ducks flying through the air v as a a beaver scurries away on the ground. Walls are covered in white oak and a TV T is placed within a band of black glass that makes a graphic ‘stripe’ along one edge of the room. e
Other elements include floor engravings of Academic All-American honorees, a color and sandblasted glass wall celebrating PAC-10 All Academic recipients and stair well that contains the names of more than 4,000 lettermen that gradu-
Directly off the entrance to the atrium is the café, which features a four-sided D gas g fireplace, surrounded by a leather lounge seat suggesting the shape of the University’s signature “O.” On the far side of the atrium is the auditorium/lecture U hall h which contains 114 leather chairs, in Oregon’s signature yellow, each individually wired for power and Internet capabilities. v

pac-10
conference of champions The Pac-10 Conference truly is the “Conference of Champions,” as it owns 26 baseball national championships since 1947, more than any other conference. The Pac-10 also claims 73 first-team All-Americans over the past 29 seasons (Baseball America), nine national coaches of the year (Baseball America and The Sporting News) and 14 national players of the year (Baseball America, Baseball Coaches’ Association and The Sporting News). The powerful and prestigious Pac-10 Conference has historically dominated college baseball. There has been a Pac-10 representative in all but four (1996, 1991, 1989, 1962) NCAA College World Series fields since the championship began in 1947. In 35 of those championships, a Pac-10 team has finished either first or second. USC has more NCAA titles than any other school in the nation with 12, and Arizona State is fourth with five. Four other Pac-10 schools have claimed at least two national titles, including Arizona (three), California (two), Oregon State (two) and Stanford (two). Some of Major League Baseball’s most prominent players have passed through this Conference. Big leaguers who got their starts in the Pac-10 include: Barry Bonds (ARIZONA STATE); Randy Johnson (USC); Dustin Pedroia (ARIZONA STATE/Boston Red Sox) ; Tim Lincecum (WASHINGTON/San Francisco Giants); Barry Zito (USC/San Francisco Giants); Jeff Kent (CALIFORNIA); Troy Glaus (UCLA/Atlanta Braves); Aaron Boone (USC); Mark Prior (USC/San Diego Padres); Paul Lo Duca (ARIZONA STATE/Florida Marlins); Xavier Nady (CALIFORNIA); Trevor Hoffman (ARIZONA/Milwaukee Brewers); and Mark Hendrickson (WASHINGTON STATE/Baltimore Orioles).
Through the years, the Pac-10 has also spawned some of the best to ever T coach the game. Rod Dedeaux’s tenure at USC (1943-45, 1951-86) – in which c his h Trojans claimed 11 NCAA titles – stands as one of the greatest coaching accomplishments to date. Former Sun Devil skippers Bobby Winkles (1959a 71) 7 and Jim Brock (1972-94) brought three and two national crowns to Arizona State, respectively. Former Arizona coach Jerry Kindall (1973-96) won z three th championships with the Wildcats, and current coaches Mark Marquess (Stanford) and Pat Casey (Oregon State) currently own a pair of NCAA titles. (S In 2003, Stanford made its fifth-consecutive trip to the NCAA College World Series and finished second (its third national championship game in four S years). In 2004, Arizona advanced to the CWS for the first time since 1986. y Arizona State made its 19th trip to Omaha in 2005, while Oregon State reA turned to college baseball’s biggest stage for the first time since 1952. In tu 2006, the Beavers returned to the College World Series for the second-con2 secutive year where they won their first national title, Oregon State’s second se NCAA title in school history. The following season in 2007, OSU returned to N the th CWS as an at large bid and did the unthinkable as it captured its second-consecutive national title becoming the first team seeded in the lower o half h of the NCAA Tournament field to win the CWS in the 20 year-history of o the event. In 2008, Stanford made its way back to the CWS after a fouryear y absence. The Cardinal went 2-2 in its 16th CWS and finished in a tie for third-place. In 2009, Arizona State advanced to the CWS for the 21st time in th program history and went on to finish in third-place. In 2010, both Arizona p State and UCLA represented the Pac-10 in the CWS, with the Bruins making S their th first appearance in the finals.
In 2010, junior Tyler Anderson became the first Duck named to the Pac-10 All-Conference Team in 39 years.
