SEASON PREVIEW Fresh Faces Freshmen Brittany Banna, Haley Driver and Sofia Hager are getting their first tastes of a spring college season, while junior Lena Macomson, who transfered from Montana State-Billings after being tabbed Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, looks to pick up where she left off. Driver and Hager looked solid in the fall portion of the schedule with both winning a teamhigh nine matches against a total of three defeats between the two of them.
One to Grow On Despite going 7-15 last season, the Ducks only lost one starter and return five. Of UO’s 76 wins picked up last season, student-athletes that won 40 of those contests return to the squad. Head Coach Paul Reber, who is in his sixth season, will be hard pressed to replace Pavlina Smatova, who had a team-high 23 victories last season. But he will have Patricia Skowronski (13) and Rabea Stueckemann (12), who had the next highest win total behind Smatova last season.
Tough Slate UO’s non-conference slate won’t be a walk in the park, but the Pac-12 schedule proves to be the most challenging. In the ITA’s preseason standings, eight of the Pac-12’s teams are ranked, including Stanford (2), UCLA (5) and Cal (8) grabbing top-10 rankings.
Double Me Up The Ducks won 45 doubles matches last season and while Skowronski and Smatova went 22-13, Trudie du Toit and Julia Metzger went 8-12 as a pair. But Skowronski might have found a new partner in Hager, who she teamed up with during fall competition to post a 7-2 record.
