CROSS COUNTRY HERITAGE

Trophy Town, USA

W

ith nine first or second place NCAA trophies earned during the course of the last two cross country and track seasons, another Golden Era for Track Town, USA is undeniably underway, due in no small part to the vision and leadership of Vin Lananna, Oregon’s nationally renowned associate athletic director. Lananna’s architectural work has produced powerhouse cross country and track and field teams once again in Track Town, USA, and cemented the region’s reputation as the home of the nation’s elite runners. Concurrently, the magnanimous haul of three NCAA titles, plus six more second-place finishes in the span of two academic years has earned a new moniker for the EugeneSpringfield community: Trophy Town, USA. That list includes NCAA titles in men’s cross country (2008), men’ indoor track (2009) and women’s indoor track (2010), plus runner-up finishes in men’s cross country (2009), women’s cross country (2008), men’s outdoor track (2009-10), women’s outdoor track (2010) and men’s indoor track (2010).

The Ducks will begin their pursuit of excellence again this fall as the cross country teams host both the Bill Dellinger Invitational and the NCAA West Regional Championships in Track Town, USA. It’s a 2010 slate that finds the Ducks leaving the Pacific Northwest just once prior to the NCAA Championships. The schedule finds an early season challenge at the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 1, before the teams return to host the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Oct. 16. After a trip to Corvallis for the Beaver Classic on Oct. 23, the championship season begins with the Pacific-10 Conference Championships in Seattle. For the second consecutive year, Oregon will host the NCAA West Region Championships Nov. 13 at Springfield Country Club. From that, teams will qualify for the NCAA Championships, which again return to the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 22.
