Rebirth of the Butte Creek Mill in Eagle Point On Christmas morning 2015, a devastating fire destroyed the historic Butte Creek Mill in Eagle Point. Rebuilding and restoration are underway after the community rallied around the historic structure and raised money to save it. The mill was originally built in 1872 and is the only grist mill in Oregon that still grinds flour. It’s been an important part of the Eagle Point economy and a prominent landmark in the community, with a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. See buttecreekmill.com

50th Anniversary of Wild and Scenic Rivers Act In 1968, the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act was enacted to protect important rivers across the country. 2018 is the 50th Anniversary of the act. In Southern Oregon, the Rogue, North Umpqua and Illinois rivers all have Wild and Scenic designations, which preserve the rivers’ environmental, cultural and recreational value for future generations. Events across the country and in Oregon will take place throughout the year to celebrate the designation. In Southern Oregon, seek out talks from experts about the health of the rivers, screenings of the film Protected: A portrait of Wild and Scenic Rivers and many more events to celebrate this momentous protective act.

r Oregon Shakespeare Festival
Oregon Shakespeare Festival Accessibility Theatergoers to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival today experience more accessibility than ever before. The program “Access for All” was launched in November 2016 to improve OSF’s campus and create a more welcoming and accessible space. The first two phases added an elevator in the Angus Bowmer Theatre, a wheelchair lift in the Allen Elizabethan Theatre, and a material lift between the two theatres, and eased the central courtyard’s steep grades, making the Bricks more mobility friendly and easier to navigate. A new Green Show stage was installed with improved lighting and sound, and seating was added for Green Show audiences. New lighting was installed to increase safety, and signage was placed to assist in wayfinding. The latest phase of the project added five more wheelchair seats to the Angus Bowmer Theatre, bringing the total to seven seats, along with additional companion seating. See osfashland.org
The Great Umpqua Bounty This summer, look for a new fun way to explore the foodie destinations of Douglas County. A map celebrating The Great Umpqua Bounty (GrUB) stems from a new program by the same name, with the mission to promote the Umpqua Valley as a food destination. Visitors, locals and the agricultural industry will be encouraged to enjoy cultural experiences that foster economic growth and agritourism. The program will launch with a county-wide food and beverage trail map for foodie consumers, available digitally and in print in the summer of 2018. See thegreatumpqua.com

Spence Mountain is located on the west shore of Klamath Lake and is the location of a trails project set on a beautiful 7,400-acre parcel. Managed by the Klamath Trails Alliance, trails have been designed for multiple uses to accommodate mountain bikers, hikers, trail runners, and even cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. In 2018, ten miles of trails will be added, making Spence a premier mountain biking destination. The emphasis is to grow the easy, or “green,” trail network to appeal to a wider audience, including walkers, beginner mountain bikers, families and active baby boomers. The new trails should begin opening June 2018.

Nature isn’t the only element to impress around here—the people have accomplished amazing feats, too. From the earliest days of settlement to the modern era, Southern Oregon has been home to visionaries. Visit gold rush towns captured in time, river valleys settled during the Oregon Trail era, hamlets in the forest built on timber and villages home to generations of fishermen. Within each, find a rich cultural undercurrent. Consider the Britt Festival, the first outdoor music festival in the Northwest, still going strong after fifty-five years. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival was founded in 1935 and has grown to become an internationally renowned repertory theater with three theaters and thousands of visitors throughout a year.
Culinary After you’ve immersed in history, culture and nature, satisfy your hunger and thirst with bites and sips from local purveyors. The wine and dining scenes are thriving here, and why wouldn’t they be? The land is rich and made for growing wine grapes and delicious foods, and the rivers and ocean run with fish and seafood.

From seashore to desert and river to mountain peak, natural beauty is at its best here. This region’s most famous wonder is Crater Lake, that sapphire jewel and geological marvel nestled in the remote mountains. But Crater Lake is just the beginning. Southern Oregon is home to wildlife refuges, lovely rivers, publicly owned beaches and designated historical sites. Boat or hike the Rogue, Umpqua or Illinois, all designated Wild and Scenic Rivers. Salmon fish the Pacific Ocean. Watch the sky come alive with birds in the Klamath Basin. Gaze upon geologic wonders in the high desert of the Outback.
SCENIC BYWAYS Enjoy the journey as much as the destination on these lovely drives.
ROGUE-UMPQUA SCENIC BYWAY The Rogue and the Umpqua rivers are two of Oregon’s finest stretches of water, each renowned for fishing, rafting and scenery. The RogueUmpqua Scenic Byway first travels up the North Umpqua River from I-5 at Roseburg, then journeys down the Upper Rogue River to Gold Hill. The 172-mile tour delivers views of massive fir forests, whitewater rapids, waterfalls and gorges carved into mountains.
UMPQUA RIVER SCENIC BYWAY This sixty-six-mile journey takes in the lower Umpqua River on its path to the sea. Travel through historic towns known for rich natural resources that attracted fur traders, loggers, fishermen and farmers more than a century ago. Follow the highway along the river through the beautiful forests of the Coast Range, ending in Reedsport and the Pacific Ocean.
OREGON OUTBACK SCENIC BYWAY The views in Oregon’s section of the Great Basin stretch across sagebrush as far as the eye can see. Geologic wonders, wildlife and alkali flats distinguish this 171-mile scenic drive, which travels from La Pine south through Lakeview to the state line, passing Fort Rock, Picture Rock Pass, Summer Lake, Abert Rim and Old Perpetual Geyser on the way.
PACIFIC COAST SCENIC BYWAY The Oregon Coast is famous for expansive views and a diverse landscape, and this byway travels along its entire glorious 363-mile stretch. Journey past sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, scenic tidepools, crashing waves and charming beach towns full of culture and character. Perhaps you’ll spot a migrating grey whale making the journey alongside you.
VOLCANIC LEGACY SCENIC BYWAY This 500-mile journey from volcano to volcano provides not only a glimpse of this region’s volcanic past, but also opportunity for adventure, exploration, nature and culture. Beginning at Lake Almanor in the south and traveling to Crater Lake in the north, the byway passes Mount Shasta, Lava Beds National Monument and much more.

CRATER LAKE Welcome to Oregon’s crown jewel. Almost 8,000 years ago, Mount Mazama erupted in a cataclysmic explosion. Rock and lava collapsed into the mountain’s center, creating a massive caldera in place of what had been a 12,000-foot peak. This caldera filled with rain and snow over centuries to become the scenic wonder Crater Lake, Oregon’s only national park.
Tour the thirty-three mile Rim Drive, stopping at viewpoints and interpretive signs along the way. Or forego the driving and take the Crater Lake Trolley tour. Visit historic Crater Lake Lodge, built in 1915 and perched 1,000 feet above the lake surface. Explore Steel Visitor Center or Rim Village Visitor Center to learn more about the park and its natural wonders. Take a boat tour to Wizard Island, a cinder cone within the caldera that rises from the lake. Hike along trails that lead to stunning views of the lake and its surrounding region.

Crater Lake
PHOTO BOTTOM CLAYTON COTTERELL
Thousands of visitors each year peer into the impossibly blue, pristine waters that fill Crater Lake. At nearly 2,000 feet deep, it’s the deepest lake in the United States and the second deepest in all of North America. The park is open year-round, but receives a remarkable fortyfour feet of snow annually. Only the south entrance is plowed to the rim in the winter.
THE CIRCLE OF DISCOVERY A driving tour of natural wonders Southern Oregon and Northern California are home to seven national park sites, which protect not only North America’s deepest lake, but also its tallest trees, steamiest hydrothermal areas, finest marble caves and most dramatic waterfalls. This is the Circle of Discovery, a multiday family road trip full of adventure and fun. Begin your journey in Redwood National Park on the Northern California coast. The coast redwood has existed in this region for 20 million years, can live 2,000 years, grows from a seed the same size as a tomato’s to reach heights of up to 367 feet and can have a width of twenty-two feet at its base. Walk among the impressive trees in misty coastal air. Oregon Caves National Monument
From the Redwoods, go north sixty miles into Oregon’s Siskiyou Mountains to the Oregon Caves National Monument. Eons of acidic rain seeped through the soil in this ancient forest to erode the rock underneath, resulting in some of the few marble caves in the world. Ranger guides take you underground. From Oregon Caves, travel 150 miles through the rich Rogue Valley to Crater Lake National Park. The south entrance is open year-round. In winter, call on the visitor’s center and peer into the snow-surrounded waters of the lake. In summer, drive the rim and have lunch at the historic Crater Lake Lodge.
Redwood National Park
Drop south from Crater Lake sixty miles through the outdoorcentric town of Klamath Falls. Another ten miles south is Tule Lake Unit of WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument, the site of the Tule Lake Segregation Center, where Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II. (Open by tour only.)
PHOTO TOP JAK WONDERLY
Thirty miles farther is Lava Beds National Monument, where volcanic eruptions over a half-million years created a fascinating landscape. Explore one of this area’s 700 lava tube caves, selfguided or on a tour, and don’t miss many examples of Native American rock art throughout the landscape. Lassen Volcanic National Park is 140 miles south of the lava beds. Lassen Peak and the surrounding area shelter every kind of volcano found in the world. Explore hydrothermal sites such as bubbling mud pots, fumaroles and spurting steam vents.

Finish the Circle of Discovery at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, where the history of the California Gold Rush is surrounded by lakes, waterfalls and creeks.

ROGUE VALLEY The fertile Rogue Valley is as diverse as it is beautiful, with history, culture, arts and natural beauty everywhere you look. From Crater Lake, the incredibly scenic landscape descends along the Rogue River into the Rogue Valley. The small community of Union Creek on the Upper Rogue River is like a summer camp captured in time, offering rustic cabins, ice cream cones and a hike along the scenic canyon known as the Rogue Gorge. Continue south to Shady Cove, where in the summer hundreds of eager river rafters float the calmer waters of the majestic Rogue.
Arts Festival, the Pacific Northwest’s premier outdoor summer performing arts festival. Jacksonville is also gateway to the Applegate Valley, an early settlement of Oregon and, today, a burgeoning hotbed of wine country. The Illinois River springs from the Rogue west of Grants Pass to travel south. Do some world-famous fishing, stop for jerky at Taylor Sausage in Cave Junction and visit the Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve, known as the marble halls of Oregon, and the adjacent historic beauty Chateau at the Oregon Caves.
Grants Pass also sits on the Rogue River and is a launching point for jet boats racing into Hellgate Canyon. Fishing, kayaking and rafting are popular here. Medford is the largest city in the region and a hub of activity and commerce. All of the charms of the Rogue Valley are here, from theater to breweries to farm-to-table dining to fine art to friendly people. Soak up the rich landscape and great climate. Journey south to Ashland, where a charming historical downtown serves as the hub of theater, fine dining, art galleries and shopping. Home of the renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival, here theatergoers take in performances indoors and out from spring until fall. Southern Oregon University is here, too, giving Ashland that college-town feel. Outdoor adventure is on hand, with trails right in town coupled with easy access to nearby mountains and lakes.

UMPQUA VALLEY The Umpqua Valley descends from alpine peaks to sandy shore, delivering scenic beauty and recreational abundance every step of the way. Begin your Umpqua tour high in the Cascade Mountains at Diamond Lake, where year-round outdoor play complements the alpine scenery and views of majestic Mount Thielsen. In the winter, Diamond Lake is about snowmobiling, tubing and skiing. In the summer, pursuits turn to hiking, cycling, swimming and lots of fishing for rainbow trout. Journey downriver on the Umpqua Scenic Byway, taking in short hikes to some of the corridor’s incredible seventeen waterfalls. Looking for bigger adventure? Try whitewater rafting for a splashy good time. Or hit the trail—the Umpqua River Trail is seventy-one miles of rugged singletrack perfect for the avid mountain biker. The Umpqua is perhaps most famous for fly-fishing opportunities. Cast a line for the legendary steelhead in spring and fall; hire a guide or wade the waters on your own.

Roseburg is the Umpqua Valley’s big city, with riverfront parks, farm-to-table dining and a plethora of wineries to explore. Live music lights up the waterfront in summer for Music on the Halfshell at Stewart Park. The historic downtown is alive with tree-lined sidewalks, friendly shops and restaurants and a couple of craft breweries. Take the self-guided Roseburg Blast tour to learn about the explosion that leveled part of downtown in 1959. The small town of Winston is home to Wildlife Safari, Oregon’s drive-thru zoo, where lions and tigers and bears are up close and personal. Winston also nurtures award-winning wineries, including Abacela and Spangler. Canyonville offers a slice of excitement at the Seven Feathers Casino Resort, where gaming and entertainment are on hand. Dive into this small city’s history at the Pioneer Indian Museum, the historic covered Milo Academy Bridge and the Applegate Trail Interpretive Kiosk. The marvelous Umpqua River journeys through the Coast Range along Highway 138, traveling through Sutherlin and Elkton. Elkton is a small town with big maple trees and bigger charm. Visit cafes, bakeries, general stores and more wineries. Take in the simple beauty of insects and flowers at the Butterfly Pavilion and Garden, dedicated to education about the native Monarch butterfly.

OREGON OUTBACK The sky dominates in the Oregon Outback. The wide-open blue hovers over a rimrock and sage landscape, a breathtaking expanse as far as the eye can see. Some people might think there isn’t much out here, but others would say that’s the point. It’s peaceful and beautiful, with plenty to explore in culture, history and geology. Lakeview is the region’s anchor, located at Oregon’s southernmost end of Highway 395. Boasting the title of the tallest town in Oregon, Lakeview sits at 4,800 feet on the flanks of the Warner Mountains, with a view of the valley. Lakeview is known for its summer rodeo and roundup, with barrel races, country music and rodeo queens. 2019 will mark the 100th anniversary of the Lake County Round-Up.
Fort Rock
Just north of Lakeview is Warner Canyon Ski Area, one of Oregon’s best-kept secrets for lovers of snow and slopes. Since 1938, this little hill has been a local labor of love, with one lift and twenty-one runs. From the 6,400-foot summit, view the grassland valley below. East of Warner Canyon, wind through the mountains to Plush, the home of Oregon’s state gemstone. The sunstone is born under the desert floor here, in the shadow of the steep flanks of Hart Mountain. Dig for your own sunstones in a public mining area or purchase some from a miner or store. Hart Mountain is largely designated as a wildlife refuge that shelters antelope and sage grouse. A hot springs is perched on top of the mountain, too. The town of Paisley hosts an annual mosquito festival, in a friendly nod to one of the town’s “residents.” Just north is Summer Lake Hot Springs, a developed retreat offering several soaking pools, camping and lodging options. Summer Lake is an alkaline lake that glimmers under the shadow of Winter Rim, both named by John Fremont during his mapmaking exploration of Oregon. Christmas Valley is a small town known for its sand dunes, attracting ATV enthusiasts year-round. Oregon Outback country’s northern boundary is marked by Fort Rock, an immense volcanic tuff ring visible from miles away. Stroll around and take in the scenery and that wide-open sky.

SOUTHERN OREGON COAST Crashing waves, sandy beaches, scenic vistas and clam chowder. The Oregon Coast is grand seascapes and comfortable beach living in all of its majesty. Jaw-dropping beauty can be found on all 363 miles of the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway. The southern section is known for its rural, rugged and craggy demeanor—all scenery and few people. Start your tour just over the Oregon-California border in Brookings. Visit Azalea Park for lush floral gardens and Harris Beach State Park to see offshore sea stacks that are home to a variety of nesting birds, including the tufted puffin. Old-growth redwood forests, art walks and kite festivals are more Brookings discoveries. Gold Beach is the next city north, named for the gold found in the beach sand here in the 1850s. The gold is no more, but riches remain. Fishing for salmon, jet boating on the Rogue River and crabbing are popular activities. Catch a festival here, from classic cars to brews to art. The oldest platted town site on the Oregon Coast is Port Orford, with a rich history that is easy to experience. Visit Battle Rock Historical Park, the site of a famous battle between Native Americans and early settlers. Port Orford is also well-known for terrific art galleries, fine seafood dining and the Cape Blanco Lighthouse, the oldest and most westerly lighthouse in Oregon. Cape Blanco Lighthouse

The Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve was created by eons of acidic water seeping into marble rock, forming mysterious caves. The Rogue River Gorge is a deep canyon cut through basalt. Abert Rim rises 2,490 feet above the high desert, one of the highest fault scarps in the country.
Beaches Humbug State Park is popular for camping, windsurfing and scuba diving. More than eight miles of trails cover Cape Blanco State Park, also home to the historic Cape Blanco Lighthouse. Shore pines and sandy beaches mark Bullards Beach State Park, as does the historic Coquille River Lighthouse. At Cape Arago State Park, rugged cliffs meet splashing waves.
Parks Lithia Park in Ashland is ninety-three acres of manicured grounds and forested canyon surrounding Lithia Creek. Roseburg’s Riverfront Park stretches more than a mile along the Umpqua River. Klamath Falls waterfront parks follow the banks of Klamath Lake and the Klamath River.
Wildlife Refuges See hundreds of migrating birds fly overhead in the Pacific Flyway at Summer Lake Wildlife Area and Klamath Marsh Wildlife Refuge. At Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge, the American pronghorn is the star; a variety of fish and birds are here, too.
Ski Areas Warner Canyon Ski Area is tucked into the remote Warner Mountains. Mt. Ashland Ski Area boasts five lifts in the beautiful Siskiyou Mountains. Hardcore enthusiasts cat ski Mount Bailey. Nordic skiing tours are at Diamond Lake, Lake of the Woods and Crater Lake.
Recreation Get your ATV speed thrills in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. The Rogue River is famous for jet boating tour opportunities. Diamond Lake is your destination for winter snowmobiling.

Favorite day trip First, breakfast at Melitas Motel and Café in Chiloquin. Then kayaking at Spring Creek. Lunch to go from Joe’s Motel, then Crater Lake National Park for a hike. Drive home during the sunset over Klamath Lake.
Hidden gem Rye Spur Trail, near Lake of the Woods. Hike from Highway 140 along the Pacific Crest Trail to Fourmile Lake for views, a thick forest and a beautiful lake.
Don’t miss I’ve had the pleasure of ziplining around the world and I’m still in awe of the views from our own Crater Lake Zipline. Super fun, yes. Thrilling, absolutely. But jaw-dropping gorgeous views tip the scale to make it my favorite!

Oregon pioneered the Scenic Bikeway program, and some of the best of these road-cyclist-friendly routes are located in Southern Oregon. Each showcases gorgeous scenery, history and community, made easy for cyclists to experience by way of printable maps and on-road signage.
CASCADE SISKIYOU SCENIC BIKEWAY Begin in Ashland and climb 5,000 feet through oak savannah into fir forests in the Siskiyou Range on this fifty-five mile loop classified as “extreme.” The challenge will be worth it when you reach spectacular views of the Bear Creek Valley and Pilot Rock, a 25-million-year-old volcanic plug.
OREGON OUTBACK SCENIC BIKEWAY In far south Central Oregon, the high desert basin and range meets the forest. This eighty-nine mile loop is a challenging one, rewarded with views of lakes frequented by pronghorn, wetland birds, bighorn sheep and sage grouse.
WILD RIVERS COAST SCENIC BIKEWAY The fishing town of Port Orford is your starting point for this ride, which travels along the Pacific Ocean and the Wild and Scenic Elk River past cranberry bogs, basalt sea stacks and vast ocean views.

More Road Cycling The iconic, must-ride Oregon cycle tour is the Rim Drive of Crater Lake, thirty-three miles of challenging, awesome alpine road cycling with a view of Oregon’s majestic natural phenomenon. Keep your ears open for news of vehicle-free days, when the rim is closed to cars but open to bikes, usually in the spring. Klamath County offers twenty-five mapped cycling routes from easy to extreme. Meander through mountains, farmlands and the high desert on two wheels.
Mountain Bike Trails The Oregon Timber Trail debuted a couple of years ago, adding to the countless outdoor experiences to be had in the state. The 670-mile backcountry mountain bike route begins in Lakeview and travels north to the Columbia River Gorge. Make it a day trip or pack up those panniers for a rugged multiday backcountry trip. Check out one of Oregon’s newest backcountry routes in Coos County’s Beaver Hill, Seven Devils Unit mountain biking trails. The North Umpqua Trail is famous for rugged singletrack opportunties. Ou t d o o r s RAFTING AND FISHING
A DAY ON THE WATER
The Wild and Scenic gem the Illinois River is where fly-fishing for steelhead, chinook salmon and coho salmon rules. This remote tributary to the Rogue can be a bit tough to access, but the rewards of fishing in such serene solitude are worth it.
Southern Oregon is famous for world-class waters. The majestic Pacific Ocean and awe-inspiring Crater Lake may be the most well-known bodies of water in the region. In between the two are dozens of lakes and rivers that have long inspired aficionados of the wild outdoors. Around here, it’s raft, fish, swim, kayak, play, repeat.
The Klamath River is sometimes called an upside-down river, for it begins in the desert and flows toward the mountains, making its way through rugged terrain before reaching the sea. Known for generous-sized trout and some excellent whitewater, the Klamath is a beauty through its varied terrain.
Begin your exploration of Southern Oregon’s waters with the Rogue River, which carries a special lore all its own. From the early days of the gold rush through the modern era of the Wild West, this river has been renowned and adored as a wild, gorgeous frontier.
Lakes aplenty can be found for anglers of all levels of experience, including Lake of the Woods, Upper Klamath Lake, Diamond Lake, Odell Lake and Crescent Lake. Cast a line from the shore or a boat and kick back until the fish bite.
The Rogue springs from the flanks of Crater Lake’s caldera. The Upper Rogue is rugged and wild, inspiring sightseeing as well as kayaking and steelhead fishing. The Lower Rogue is a sought-after destination for whitewater rafting, with would-be permit holders lining up months in advance for a slot to float the river. Salmon fishing as well as more steelhead fishing is to be had on the Lower Rogue all the way to the mouth at the Pacific Ocean.
Rafting the Rogue River
The North Umpqua makes its way from the Cascade Range to the sea, inspiring its own legions of adoring fans. The Umpqua is legendary for steelhead fishing, with stories of the anadromous fish found here dating back more than one hundred years. The Umpqua is great for boating too, from kayak to raft to drift boat.

A RICH CULTURAL HISTORY
49 ď‚&#x; Travel Southern Oregon
More than 100 years ago, some big dreamers brought some big culture to Southern Oregon. The first Chautauqua lectures began in the 1890s, and things only grew from there. Today, Southern Oregon is home to the longest-running outdoor music festival in the Northwest, an internationally famous theater festival and even an orchestra that performed on the rim of Crater Lake.
DO SOMETHING GREAT ď‚&#x; 49
Arts & C u ltu
re
EARLY VISIONARIES From the very beginning of Southern Oregon’s roots, arts and culture were firmly lodged in people’s hearts. Consider Peter Britt, who arrived in Jacksonville in 1852 with $5 in his pocket and a wagonful of photography equipment. He ended up chronicling fifty years of life and growth in the fledgling pioneer community in beautiful photos. Sixty years after his death, Britt was immortalized as the namesake of Southern Oregon’s premier outdoor concert series, the Britt Festival, which entertains thousands each year from the grounds of Britt’s former home. Or think of Angus Bowmer, who came to Ashland in 1931 to teach English at Southern Oregon Normal School. A few years later, he persuaded the city to support an outdoor production of the works of Shakespeare. His legacy is the world-famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival, with three theaters, a company of hundreds and thousands of plays presented over the past eighty-seven years. Today, the dreamers endure. In 2016, a collaboration between the Britt Festival, the Klamath Tribes and Crater Lake National Park brought an entire orchestra and choir to the rim of Crater Lake. The 100th anniversary of the national park system was celebrated with an outdoor performance of a musical composition created just for the event. Now, that’s cultural overachievement.
TEDDY ABRAMS JACKSONVILLE
Music Director, Britt Orchestra Teddy Abrams lives in Louisville, Kentucky as the music director of the Louisville Orchestra. But from mid-July to mid-August, home is Jacksonville, Oregon. As music director for the Britt Orchestra, Abrams’ Southern Oregon time is “crazy intense,” he says. Still, the internationally celebrated conductor manages to squeeze in some exploration and recreation, too.
Favorite day trip Jacksonville looks like a Western movie set, but you’ll find the community to be very culturally modern. Check out the hiking trails over the Britt hill, through an oak and wax myrtle forest. Gogi Restaurant is particularly great for dinner. And the Britt Festival is world-class. The hill is unparalleled at the end of a hot summer day.
Hidden gem The wine shop at Jacksonville Inn is well curated with national and international wines offered by knowledgeable staff.
Don’t miss Crater Lake. I conducted Britt Orchestra musicians, music students from Southern Oregon University and a fifty-voice choir on the rim in 2016. We performed “Natural History,” a world premiere composition by composer Michael Gordon. It was a magical and spiritual experience.

Oregon Shakespeare Festival
Oregon Cabaret Theatre
Craterian Theater
THEATER
For some, “Southern Oregon” and “theater” are synonymous. Ashland’s Oregon Shakespeare Festival is the granddaddy, but the greater region is chock full of creative theater productions. Each regional theater is a little bit different, but what they have in common is a passionate, talented and dedicated community behind them. Many theaters have been brought back to life from grand, historic pasts after decades of neglect. Their renovations have been met as triumphs. Several are Art Deco designs that have been rejuvenated to serve as community centers. All provide a stage for talent, both local and national, to entertain, educate and inspire. In Ashland, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival runs March through October on three stages. This rotating repertory company showcases plays written by William Shakespeare, as well as many other modern playwrights who’ve penned a diversity of plays from classics to contemporaries. The festival’s reach is international and brings the town of Ashland to vibrant life each season with thousands of visitors.

Also in Ashland is the Oregon Cabaret Theatre, where dinner comes with the show. Musicals and music acts are served along with delicious meals at this entertainment hub in the heart of town just steps from the Shakespeare festival campus. Twenty years ago, the community of Medford rallied around a historic community theater. Today, the Craterian Theater presents dozens of plays, musicals and performances each year. Also in Medford is the Holly Theatre, a historic Spanish Colonial Revival theater built in 1930. Currently undergoing a renovation, the Holly will host national music acts, classic films and more for years to come. Camelot Theater took up residence in an old feed store in Talent in 1990, and the rest is history. This 104-seat theater hosts musicals and plays year-round, now in the new state-of-the-art, Art Decostyle James Morrison Collier Theatre building. Rogue Theatre in downtown Grants Pass is another historic art deco gem, built in 1938. Today, the venue is host to local and national music, dance, film and plays. Downtown Klamath Falls has the Art Deco beauty and community hub the Ross Ragland Theater. In Gold Beach, it’s the Ellensburg Theatre in the historic Rogue Playhouse that entertains guests.

THE WORLD’S A STAGE
HERITAGE
A FUSION OF HISTORY AND CULTURE The strength of character, independence and passion that define Southern Oregon began with this region’s Native Americans and pioneers. Many institutions around the region bring these twin histories and cultures to life, alongside that of the rich natural resources that have defined Southern Oregon’s growth and prosperity. The Favell Museum in Klamath Falls is dedicated to regional Native American culture. Native American artifacts and contemporary Western art found here include arrowheads, cradleboards, miniature guns and more, all from the collection of museum founders Gene and Winifred Favell. The Fort Klamath Museum, north of Klamath Falls, is a small gem with interesting artifacts from the era when hundreds of soldiers were stationed there.
In the late 1880s, the Applegate Trail became an important alternative to the main Oregon Trail route to the Willamette Valley. Many settlers chose sunny Southern Oregon as their new home. The Applegate Trail Interpretive Center in Sunny Valley depicts the stories of the covered wagons, gold, and rail and stage lines that defined the settlers’ experiences. Just up the road in Wolf Creek is the Wolf Creek Inn, built in the 1880s as an oasis for weary travelers. Today, the inn still serves meals and provides beds to sojourners. In Medford, the Southern Oregon Historical Society showcases antique fire engines, women’s fashion, renowned photos by famed photographer Peter Britt and a historic farm that guests can even rent for special events. Roseburg’s own little historic time capsule is the Douglas County Museum. In addition to artifacts showcasing the history of mining, fishing, farming and timber, the museum has one of the largest plant collections on display in the Northwest, providing a glimpse of the diversity of the forests that surround this special region. In the Outback, don’t miss a stop at the Fort Rock Homestead Museum, with a collection of homestead-era buildings including a church, school and cabins filled with historic items. On the coast, Coos History Museum brings to life maritime history, the history of fire on the Oregon Coast and more than 250,000 images of the widely captured Southern Oregon coastline.

MUSIC & ARTS
FOR THE EARS AND THE EYES From fine art to folk art, symphony to pop music, historical artifacts to film, Southern Oregon is filled with music and arts.
Each spring, the Ashland Film Festival brings independent film to Ashland. Immerse yourself in this five-day event that has been described as “magical” and a “dream you’ll never want to leave.” Artistic films and their makers descend on this small town for a community-driven, cultural experience. On the other side of the Siskiyou range, the Klamath Independent Film Festival in Klamath Falls brings shorts and features to town each September.

On the campus of Southern Oregon University is the Schneider Museum of Art, showcasing fine visual arts in a changing exhibit format. Past exhibits have included fine and contemporary art and serve as a vital force in the intellectual life of the college and the city. In Roseburg, the Umpqua Valley Arts Association presents the Arts Center. By working with student, regional and resident artists, along with six galleries, the Arts Center supports the local community. The Guild Gallery & Art Center in Kerby, north of Cave Junction, diplays art in many mediums from regional artists, including glass, ceramics, jewelry and more.

The hills are alive with the sound of music. Once upon a time, Portland conductor John Trudeau and his friend Sam McKinney visited Southern Oregon with the dream of starting a music festival. They found the hillside estate of Jacksonville photographer Peter Britt, and a harmonious match was made. The slope of the Britt hill not only creates perfect acoustics, it also offers stunning views of the Rogue Valley in the distance. With performances from orchestra to mainstream headlining acts, the Britt Festival is the heart of Jacksonville and an aesthetic treasure in the state.

CREATIVITY BORN FROM THE LAND A bit of a culinary revolution has overtaken Southern Oregon in the past couple decades. As the farm-to-table movement spread across the nation, Southern Oregon was already at the head of the trend. Established farms and creative chefs have long been making magic with what the land produced. Today, visitors can barely find a restaurant in Southern Oregon that isn’t taking advantage of this region’s selection of seasonal, local foods. Creameries, orchards and farms deliver delicious local flavors to a community hungry for delectable meals. Fish from the rivers, crab from the sea, vegetables from the earth, wild game from the forests and organic meats from local ranches are all transformed into dishes prepared with creativity and love.
Choices, Choices Dining destinations in the region run the gamut, from fine dining to outdoor barbecue. Choose from casual burgers to perfectly crafted plates served on white table cloths. Eat fish and chips fresh from the boat at the Crazy Norwegians Fish and Chips in Port Orford, enjoy

HEIDI LAEL ROSEBURG
Owner, Parrott House Heidi Lael’s family has deep Umpqua Valley roots, but before she came back home after two decades of renovating properties around the nation, she wanted something to “keep her busy.” Parrott House fit the bill. She bought the 1891-constructed Victorian home, once home to the finest shoemaker on the West Coast, from the bank in 2011 and set forth on a six-year overhaul of the beautiful historic home. Parrott House opened in early 2017 as a destination restaurant and event venue with a gourmet Northwest-inspired menu. “I love people’s response when they see the house,” she says. “There’s the reward right there.”
Standing Stone Brewing
Don’t miss Umpqua Valley has a world-class wine scene. I love Hillcrest Winery—it’s the oldest estate winery in the state of Oregon and a great one to start a tour of local wineries with.
Favorite day trip
Hidden gem The Wildlife Safari is definitely not a secret, but it’s so amazing that I still say it’s a place that you have to visit. We reclaimed the old rhino pen doors for the patio at Parrott House, and we’re working on partnering with the Safari to bring a cheetah to Parrott House, too.

Brews and Libations The foodie renaissance extends to beverages. From the moment that Standing Stone Brewing Co. first began brewing beer using natural thermal energy from underground, innovators have been willing to do things a little bit differently here. There are dozens of breweries to explore, from Winston’s modest but well-respected tasting room Lookingglass Brewery to Wild River Brewing with three locations in the Rogue Valley. Count on local ingredients and new efforts in sustainability to keep appearing in Southern Oregon’s brewing industry. Craft cider has popped up, too, including Bandon Rain at the seashore and Apple Outlaw Cider south of Applegate in the rugged valley. And don’t forget the spirits. Immortal Spirits in Medford was the region’s first single malt whiskey distillery, but surely not the last.

The North Umpqua River is absolutely stunning. We have an awesome bike trail with different segments to choose from. You can see the salmon running in the river in places from the trail. There are tons of other activities to choose from, too, like hiking and fishing. Stop in at the historic Steamboat Inn for lunch or an overnight stay.

DO SOMETHING GREAT 67
e i n W FROM VINE TO GLASS You may be surprised to learn that Southern Oregon produces some of the most diverse wine varietals of anywhere else in the Pacific Northwest. That has a lot to do with the climate and the terrain. Southern Oregon’s latitude and prevailing oceanic winds create a seven-month growing season. Wide diurnal temperature swings and mountainous topography produce dozens of microclimates. The result is awardwinning wines that draw thousands to the region.

68 ď‚&#x; Travel Southern Oregon
UNDER THE VINES Southern Oregon cultivates more than seventy different grape varieties. This makes this region more like Europe than other locations on the West Coast. Wine Enthusiast named Southern Oregon one of the Top 10 Global Destinations in 2016.
KARA OLMO APPLEGATE VALLEY
At the same time, Southern Oregon is still relatively undiscovered when it comes to viticulture. That means that you can make a weekend of a leisurely wine tasting trip, complete with gourmet meals and sips of tempranillo and cabernet, without worrying about fighting the crowds.
TAKE A TOUR How best to explore Southern Oregon’s wine regions? There are so many delicious ways. Bike-touring has become one popular option, with destinations supporting cyclists with paved roads flanked by rolling vineyards, bike racks and overnight accommodations for you and your bike. Via Bike Tours offers a Southern Oregon Wine Country Bicycle Tour that handles all of the details and navigation for you. Hire a personal concierge, driver and tour guide with Bravo Outings. The tour company leads a multitude of getaways, with private tastings, wine and food pairings, cellar tours, and more in the Rogue and Umpqua Valleys. Wine Hopper Tours is another great option for a wine tour in the Rogue and Applegate Valleys. Hop aboard their comfortable van for private and group tours, complete with loads of wine education.
GRAB A BITE Some of the region’s wineries don’t stop their quest for excellency with the grape. Delicious bites are to be found at many wineries, too. Locally sourced meals taste even better while drinking wine from the earth beneath your feet and gazing at the vineyards that produced what’s in your glass. Try the woodfired pizza at Dancin Vineyards near Jacksonville, an indulgent burger at Schmidt Family Vineyards, or the always changing, ever-delicious seasonal sample menu at Belle Fiore in Medford.
Co-owner, Wooldridge Vineyard and Winery and CrushPad Creamery Kara Olmo and her husband Greg Paneitz had been searching the West Coast for “that place” to grow grapes and make wine. When they found Wooldridge Creek Vineyard in the Applegate Valley, they were home. They joined forces with Ted and Mary Warrick, who owned the vineyard, and created Wooldridge Creek Winery.
Favorite day trip The Rogue River is an experience that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world. We float ourselves, but I suggest hiring a guide service for a day or multiday trip.
Hidden gem CrushPad Creamery and Charcuterie is at our winery. When visitors realize that everything on the cheese board before them came from right here, they are amazed. Even the board is from a tree off the property.
Don’t miss Wildlife Images in Grants Pass provides rehabilitation services for wildlife, and the volunteer interpreters explain the background of each animal to bring the experience to life.

SING AND DANCE Regional wineries are prime destination event locations. Book a wedding or reunion on one of these gorgeous private grounds and it’s sure to be memorable. Many wineries offer regular music and entertainment. Catch live music by the Applegate River at Red Lily Winery, wine and music series at RoxyAnn Winery in Medford and the summerfest concert series at Delfino Vineyards in Roseburg.
DO SOMETHING GREAT 69
W in e VARIETY ON THE VINE Southern Oregon is home to five distinct wine-grape growing regions, each boasting a unique terroir, or combination of soil, topography and climate. The diversity of grapes on the vine results in an even broader range of wines to enjoy in the glass.
Umpqua Valley
Umpqua Valley wine dates back to the 1880s when German immigrants planted the first vineyard in the valley. Today, the region around Roseburg is home to twenty-three wineries, most of which are family owned and operated. Visiting wineries here comes along with peaceful surroundings, farm-to-table dining, hiking, scenic drives, and plenty of natural beauty and adventure. Â
Reustle Prayer Rock Vineyards
Rogue Valley
The cultural and economic heart of Southern Oregon beats in the Rogue Valley, also the location of the greatest concentration of wineries. A couple dozen wineries can be found here, surrounded by limitless scenery, world-class fishing and rafting, museums, music festivals, theater and more to round out an itinerary. Green valleys and rolling hills full of merlot to malbec are here for the sampling.
Elkton
The Elkton AVA is one of the newest wine regions in Oregon. The misty hills and cool valleys of the coastal mountain range are perfect for cool weather grapes such as pinot noir, pinot gris and riesling. Under the boughs of the Douglas fir, and with an average of fifty inches of rain a year, the Elkton area on the lower Umpqua produces great wines only forty miles from the ocean.
Illinois Valley
Applegate Valley
The steep terrain of the Applegate Valley protects the terroir from coastal breezes, resulting in the pleasant temperatures and moderate climate that drew early pioneers. Rural scenery, friendly people and winemaking talent define this rugged, beautiful valley. Sip on tempranillo, syrah and bordeaux along the banks of the bubbling Applegate River.

PHOTO BOTTOM SEAN BAGSHAW
The Illinois Valley carves through the forested mountains of the Siskiyou Mountains and the Oregon Coast range. The tranquil, rural setting is as relaxing as it is a terrific place to sip great wine. Burgundian varietals such as pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot blanc thrive here along Highway 199 as it travels from I-5 to Highway 101 on the Pacific Ocean.

L o dg i n g OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATION ABOUNDS Historic If history calls to you, you’ll find one of Oregon’s oldest lodgings in Jacksonville. Built in 1861, the Jacksonville Inn is rumored to be haunted, but that doesn’t stop happy guests from booking its rooms solid through the season. This lovely little historic bed and breakfast has been named one of the most romantic places to stay in Oregon. Another historic beauty can be found in Ashland. The Ashland Springs Hotel has been a landmark since it opened in 1925 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Completely restored to its original impressive style, the hotel’s stories rise into the sky above Ashland, providing a luxury lodging experience. Just outside of downtown Ashland, tucked away on four acres of manicured gardens, is Lithia Springs Resort and the Waterstone Spa. This is the place to experience healing waters from a mineral hot spring pumped into private soaking tubs in each room.
Ashland Springs Hotel
The glory days of Americana in Southern Oregon is on display at The Chateau at the Oregon Caves, another historic lodge. In Cave Junction, the lodge is set into the hills of an old-growth forest in the Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve. Don’t leave without checking out the 1930s-style coffee shop, with handmade milkshakes and burgers that hit the spot after a day of exploring.
Riverfront Lake of the Woods
Near Roseburg along the South Umpqua is Seven Feathers Resort, opened by the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians. A thirty-three-foot bronze bald eagle called Skookum Hyak welcomes visitors upon arrival to this hotel and casino.
Ranch Find a true getaway experience at the Running Y Ranch in Klamath Falls. The resort has a grand lodge as well as vacation rentals to choose from. This is the place to use as your basecamp

On the lower Rogue River as it rolls to the sea you’ll find Galice Resort, with cabins suitable for families of any size. Run by the same family for almost four decades, the resort has a restaurant with a view and provides guided whitewater rafting trips or fishing trips on the world-class Rogue. Anglers, pay attention: tucked away on a bend of the Umpqua River, the Steamboat Inn has charming cabins and suites that are a perfect romantic retreat.
Crater Lake Lodge
for adventures, miles of hiking and biking trails as well as fishing on nearby rivers. Although the acclaimed 18-hole golf course, fine dining restaurant and Sandhill Spa are enough reasons to stick around the ranch for a weekend.
Iconic An unparalleled seasonal jewel can be found in Crater Lake Lodge, perched on the rim of the pristine lake at Oregon’s only national park. From May to October, stay within the park at this historic lodge, which opened in 1915 and has been completely restored to its original rustic charm.

Inns A charming bed and breakfast destination in Roseburg, C.H. Bailey House is a fifty-acre tree farm with country views. The Winchester Inn in Ashland is another small inn with a complimentary two-course breakfast. On the banks of the Rogue River in Grants Pass is the Weasku Inn, a historic fishing lodge.
Lakeside Cabins and Camping Up in the mountains are lovely lakeside lodgings. The natural alpine lake Lake of the Woods has a destination resort with three campgrounds as well as lodges to rent and RV sites. The lake is popular for boating and swimming, and there are also a variety of fish to reel in. North of Crater Lake, Diamond Lake Resort is another family-friendly lakeside destination for all seasons. Unplug and enjoy camping, swimming, boating, fishing, hiking and horseback riding in the summer or snowmobiling, inner tubing and snowshoeing in the winter.

MOVE YOUR BUSINESS TO SOUTHERN OREGON Southern Oregon has been your favorite place to visit for a while now. You’ve strapped your bike on top of your car dozens of times and driven hours just to break out that ridiculously light fly rod that you paid way too much for. Now it’s time to stare down the elephant in the room. If you love it here that much, why haven’t you moved your business here? In the spirit of Letterman, here are the top 5 reasons to stop procrastinating, take off your training pants and move your business to Southern Oregon:
#5. No More Pockets Full Of Pennies. Oregon has no sales tax. This means avoiding those fistfuls of pennies handed to you every time you go to the store and the weird price results in more change than the Federal Reserve Bank. Oh, and there’s no inventory tax in Oregon. And did I mention our corporate income tax is based only on sales inside Oregon? Just sayin’.
#4. You Can Cancel Your Sirius XM Radio Subscription. Our average commute time is ninteen minutes. Depending on where you live now, that could save you up to a month a year…time no longer wasted sitting in traffic. You might actually have time to break out that fly rod and catch a real trout with it.
#3. You Can Cut Your Own Christmas Tree. Over half of Oregon is publicly owned, including thick national forests and clear mountain lakes and streams. If you hike, bike, ski, climb, kayak, hang-glide, hunt, fish or boat, you will love Southern Oregon. And cutting your own tree is cool, too (if you’re into the fresh smell of pine, that is).
#2. You Don’t Have To Pump Your Own Gas. Weird, huh? We’re one of only two states that require attendants pump your gas. What else is weird is how friendly, helpful and creative Southern Oregonians are. It’s a unique environment for doing business that you just don’t find very often. But then, most places pump their own gas.
#1. You Will Finally Be Able To Fit Your Directions On A Cocktail Napkin. When you look at a map, I-5 is a beautiful thing. Seattle? North on I-5. San Francisco? South on I-5. Your place? In between. Unfortunately, even your in-laws can figure that out. And in the time it takes you to score a chocolate macadamia nut breve, they will be calling to schedule a visit. So if you’re thinking about getting a life, give us a call. We know some people you should meet!

ORW Architecture
Cropper Medical
ORW is the largest architectural firm in Southern Oregon and is licensed in eight states. Each of the three founding partners has a testimony of how they left a big city in search of a more balanced life style. “We work to live, not live to work” is their office motto. They cite great weather, a supportive business climate, lower development costs, quality medical care, boundless outdoor opportunities and a world-class arts culture as just some of the reasons they chose to call Southern Oregon home.
Cropper Medical manufactures high performing orthopedic devices. The founders brought their family to Southern Oregon in search of a better quality of life. “Even outside the appeal for a family, it’s great [here]. We’re so close to great trails and rivers and rafting and boating on the lakes. There’s so much to enjoy in the geography here, which ties in nicely with our products too. We’re all about helping people stay active and use their bodies.”
Met One Instruments
Lithia is a publicly traded company and the fourth largest auto retailer in the nation. With 175 stores and 13,000 employees across the U.S., they believe that Southern Oregon is unique. “It’s not just the climate. We have four seasons, smart and friendly people, a great community and the proximity of skiing, mountain lakes and the coast. It’s like a little piece of heaven.”

Met One relocated from the Silicon Valley and has been growing ever since. They sell to more than 100 countries worldwide and are the largest exporter in Oregon for their business class size. “It’s easy for us to do business here. It’s easy for us to get our products shipped and it’s easy for us to get components locally if we can’t make them ourselves.”
