AVAs

AMERICAN VITICULTURAL AREAS Yamhill Valley has six distinct winegrowing regions called American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), in Oregon wine country: Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, McMinnville, Ribbon Ridge, and Yamhill-Carlton. Each of these areas, regions with their own hillside or valley microclimates, boasts distinct soil identities. This translates into wines that carry hints of the iron from the soil, and others that offer the taste of the afternoon shade of their hills. With a cooler climate than most winemaking areas and a winemaking style designed to bring out the terroir’s flavors rather than manipulate them, the winemakers of Yamhill Valley create pinots of subtle elegance and deep intensity, with undertones carrying all the richness of the land where they grew. Although global recognition of these wines began in the 1980s, it’s a story that began 10,000 to 15,000 years ago, when the land began to rise from the Pacific, bringing a maritime richness deepened by lava flows and soils carried from floods from Montana and Washington.

MCMINNVILLE The largest city in Yamhill County, McMinnville is the charming and welcoming heart of the Willamette Valley. After touring some of many neighboring wineries, take a stroll down Third Street in the historic downtown art district or visit the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, home of the largest plane ever constructed, the Spruce Goose.

NEWBERG Settled by farmers in the early 1800s, Newberg continues to be an agricultural center of Yamhill Valley, farming everything from blueberries and wine grapes to hazelnuts and Christmas trees. Drawing from the local bounty, world-class restaurants in town include restaurants JORY at The Allison Inn & Spa and The Painted Lady downtown.

WILLAMINA At the southern border of Yamhill County, Willamina offers restaurants and lodging for travelers venturing to or from the Oregon coast. Every July, the city hosts its annual Wildwood MusicFest & Campout, featuring regional talent with bands ranging from bluegrass and blues to rock and folk music.

YAMHILL Authentic and charming, the small town of Yamhill is surrounded by farms and wineries. In the summer, make a stop at the Kookoolan Farm Store,The Quilted Hill quilt shop, or one of the area’s fragrant lavender farms. Meanwhile, a few of Yamhill’s famed vineyards and producers include Solena and WillaKenzie Estate.

SHERIDAN South of McMinnville, the town of Sheridan offers a great place for travelers to get away and relax after touring and wine tasting. Book a room at one of the town’s quaint B&Bs including Brightridge Farm Bed & Breakfast or stay in a cozy cottage in the forest at Bethell Woods.

WINE LAND

THE GEOGRAPHY OF FLAVOR Yamhill Valley is at the center of fifteen million years of flavor, revealed in vintages created through sustainable, biodynamic viticulture.

T

he date on a bottle of vibrant, elegant Yamhill Valley pinot noir might be 2010 or 1998. But it could just as well be 15,000,000 B.C. That marks the origins of the unique soils that build the terroir of the valley, the source of the grapes that become some of the world’s best pinot noirs and pinot gris. It’s when the land began to rise from the Pacific Ocean, bringing a maritime richness that would be deepened by lava flows from the Cascades to the east and soils carried from the Missoula floods from prehistoric Montana. With soil this rich and fertile, winemakers want to get the most out of it. That’s why, as wine writer Katherine Cole says, “Oregon is ground zero for biodynamic viticulture in the U.S.,” using natural fertilizing of the vines and the land, treating a vineyard as an ecosystem and respecting other plants and wildlife. The approach enriches the land with ingredients such as naturally aged silica instead of chemical laboratory creations, and

brings winemakers out into the fields for the closest connection with their grapes. A guiding principle is sustainability, a cherished value for Oregon, especially when the perspective covers millions of years. Yamhill Valley has six distinct viticultural areas, regions with their own hillside or valley microclimates, each with distinct soil identities. It creates some wines that carry hints of the iron in their soil, and others that offer a taste of the afternoon shade of their hills. Together with a climate cooler than most winemaking areas, and a winemaking style designed to bring out the terroir’s flavors rather than manipulate them, the winemaking style of Yamhill Valley produces pinots of subtle elegance and deep intensity, with undertones carrying all the richness of the land where they grew. For the discerning palate, it is Yamhill Valley that offers fifteen million years of flavor in the making; 15,000,000 B.C. was a great year for pinot noir.

THE SECOND GENERATION

T

T

n Yamhill Valley, the names found on wine labels are often the same as the people who are running the crush. Winemaking and running the business is passing to the second generation, which is operating in a wine world vastly different from the one in which they grew up. At Eyrie, Jason Lett, son of David Lett, a founding father of the Oregon wine industry, has been working the crush since he was three, although he has missed a few vintages when he was out of state. Coming back from a climatically differ-

ent New Mexico, he remembers being out in the vineyard in a downpour and wondering why anybody would want to be any place else. “What’s really interesting is how little has actually changed,” Lett says of winemaking in the valley, despite many changes in the region. “Every time we decide there’s no way the district can support any more, then more industry people move in.” Alex Sokol Blosser, co-president with his sister of the winery his parents created, started out in the fields at about age nine. He recalls, “When

you grow up doing it, you don’t realize how special it is.” Of the decades since, he remembers a major shift when Domaine Drouhin bought Yamhill Valley land in the 1980s, and the world started streaming in for the Oregon Pinot Noir celebration. Other wineries such as Stoller Family Estate and WillaKenzie Estate also have deep family involvement in their valley vineyards. When wine people in the valley talk about roots, they’re not just talking vines.

RED, WHITE & NEW As the region’s acclaim grows, Yamhill Valley vineyards are beginning to grow grapes of a different color.

W

hen Wine Spectator, in its 2015 annual list, names a pinot noir from the Yamhill Valley as the third best wine in the world, you can see why people go on pinot pilgrimages to that part of the Willamette Valley. Just a decade after the first planting of pinot noir grapes in the valley, The Eyrie Vineyards wines showed powerfully in a blind tasting in France against top-level Burgundies. Since then, wineries have grown explosively among the hills, just about all of them aiming to write their names in Oregon’s premier red wine. Now, the International Pinot Noir Celebration, held each July at Linfield College in McMinnville–it may already be sold out–draws professionals and enthusiasts from all over the world, and some of them stay. Wine producers from California and Europe have been buying land and planting pinot noir in the neighborhood. The appeal is clear; good Oregon pinots are particularly subtle and elegant, embracing food rather than overwhelming it. But there’s more than one color in the Yamhill Valley

18

picture. Vineyards were making white wines here in the 1880s, long before Prohibition shut everything down. After the rebirth of the Oregon wine industry, the valley became one of the first places to plant pinot gris, a crisp white seemingly created with salmon and oysters in mind. And more varietals are sprouting. “Chardonnay is becoming much more prominent,” said Wayne Bailey, winemaker at Youngberg Hill. “Ten years from now, chardonnay could be as prominent as pinot noir today.” After all, he notes, just as pinot noir is the basic red of Burgundy, chardonnay is the basic white. The winemaking skills of the valley look beyond the state’s borders and bring in other grapes. Natalie’s Estate in Newberg brings in grapes from the Columbia and Yakima Valleys in Washington to produce out-of-region varietals such as cabernet sauvignon and syrah, as well as growing its own crop of pinot noir. Yamhill Valley is known around the world for its pinot noir, and it’s clear that in the grand scheme of things, this is just the beginning.

CULINARY PALATE

A SINGULAR EXPERIENCE Cultivating a community of world-class kitchens, where the bounty of the valley extends beyond the vineyards.

A

t JORY–which already makes a statement by being the rare four-star restaurant named after a kind of soil–Executive Chef Sunny Jin likes equanimity. To wit: the two guys in jeans still dirty from their vineyards receive the same attention as the party of four just in from Paris. For all who are in his dining room, Jin works to distill the richness of the Yamhill Valley into his menu which changes daily at JORY, the signature restaurant at The Allison Inn & Spa. To match the vast 800-label wine list, JORY sends foragers out into the countryside, has buyers stationed on the Oregon docks, and draws from its own extensive gardens and those of nearby farms and vineyards. Jin will also help at local butcherings. None of this preempts him from creating an elegant setting for the day’s spring Chinook salmon run and the rest of the area’s bounty. A few miles away, The Painted Lady sets out its own enthralling experience, serving elaborate prix fixe meals in a Victorian house. Also deeply connected to the valley’s wines and resources, Chef Allen Routt offers dishes such as pan-roasted sturgeon with black garlic and rutabaga puree. For four decades, Nick’s Italian Café in McMinnville has been the hangout of the Willamette wine world, feeding crab

lasagna to winemakers and accumulating legendary vintages. Nick Peirano has now been succeeded by his daughter and son-in-law, but Nick’s is still a landmark among the vines. There has also been a family succession at the Joel Palmer House in Dayton, where chef Chris Czarnecki has taken over his father Jack’s inspired wild mushroom-infused kitchen, matching the local pinot noir with Oregon’s phenomenal fungi. The Yamhill Valley has become a national dining destination, with a range of restaurants extending from the French country appeal of Cuvée in Carlton, to the boutique precision of Thistle in McMinnville to the casual charm of Dundee Bistro. New possibilities pop up constantly, as young chefs are drawn to a region so rich in wines and almost anything else that grows here. For those who want to get closer to the vines than a restaurant table, there’s also a plethora of delis, bakeries and cheese shops offering the makings for an outstanding winery picnic. Wineries graciously accommodate this by setting out welcoming tables for these baskets of moveable feasts. For all of the valley’s restaurants and food markets, there’s a powerful quality control–the person who just ordered the meal could very well have made the wine that goes with it.

CULINARY PALATE

FROM GRAPE TO GRAIN Baked goods and sweets draw on the European tradition of la dolce vita. Bread and wine are a vital combination in the Yamhill Valley, where bakeries draw from the same European inspiration as the wineries, creating the kinds of picnics which would have enthralled Impressionist painters. Carlton Bakery creates four varieties of baguettes, eight flavors of shortbread, and sandwiches made with its house-made bread and local pork, fresh from Carlton Farms. Blue Raeven Farmstand offers thirty-five varieties of pie, with the unchallengeable motto, “Pie fixes everything.” Honest Chocolates, with branches in Newberg, McMinnville and Carlton, produces handmade chocolates flavored with pinot, merlot and port, each bite invoking the mystical mingling of chocolate and red wine. For every sip of wine that comes from Yamhill Valley, there is a bite of something

made locally to accompany it deliciously.

THE INSIDERS Family lines reveal and redefine the authentic Yamhill Valley.

P

eople who grow up in Yamhill Valley have some trouble leaving. It can make them devise entirely new ways to stay, and in the process, create in the valley entirely new possibilities. Stefan Czarnecki grew up in his father’s restaurant, the Joel Palmer House, now run by his brother, Chris. Stefan had gone into teaching, and then found a more expansive route into the life of the valley. He operates Black Tie Tours, running limousine tours through the wine country he’s known since he was a kid, showing visitors unexpected sides of the val-

38

ley. “I like taking people to lesser-known wineries,” he says. “I like throwing people a curveball.” Although Black Tie Tours started as mostly a summer operation, said Czarnecki, “The season is getting longer and longer every year.” A true insider, Czarnecki always has places to reveal to visitors. He is never in search of an answer when a customer asks if he knows a good restaurant around here. Christian DeBenedetti landed even closer to his roots. After building a career as a beer writer (he wrote the book The Great American Ale Trail: The Craft Beer Lover’s Guide to the Best Watering Holes

T R AV E L YA M H I L L VA L L E Y 2 0 1 6 - 1 7

in the Nation), he opened the Wolves & People Farmhouse Brewery on the same Newberg farm where he grew up. As the website says, “Farm Founded: c. 1850, Brewery Founded 2014.” For 50 years, the DeBenedetti family has been carrying on the work of early settlers at Springbrook Farm. Now, in a 1912 barn, Wolves & People brews sour and wood-aged beers, using a yeast from a plum tree on the farm. It’s a rustic setting for a brewery; as DeBenedetti has said, “It’s not unusual to see coyote, deer, blue heron, huge raptors, red-wing blackbirds and other living things outside.”

CUISINE SMARTS

Wine Country Cooking Studio As deeply involved as you might get with the scope of Yamhill Valley vineyards or the undertones of a lively pinot noir, probably nobody’s going to let you actually make wine – unless you have a few acres of vines or a degree in oenology. But the valley does offer a vivid hands-on culinary experience. At Wine Country Cooking Studio, just upstairs from Red Hills Market in Dundee, you get to learn, cook and consume. Chefs Jody Kropf and Mark Young lead students through the preparation of exquisite, yet simple dishes that use seasonal ingredients to highlight the bounty of the Willamette Valley. Hosting a variety of classes, from winemaker dinners and whiskey socials to gluten-free and kids cooking, the school presents a hands-on ap-

Valley Brewery & Pub’s handcrafted brews have been the pride of McMinnville, with unusual offerings such as a doppelbock. For even deeper authenticity, the beef on the menu comes from its own local ranch. Lately, it’s been joined downtown by the Grain Station Brew Works, featuring live music and, among multiple craft taps, a coffee stout made with Nicaraguan coffee. In the heart of the wine strip in Dundee, Deception Brewery uses fruit in its artisan products, with offerings such as apricot cream ale. This can neatly punctuate an afternoon of pinot noir tasting. In Newberg, the Chehalem Valley Brewing Company has at least six taps of its own brews, which can run out quickly. In summer, the garage doors open and the warm valley atmosphere mingles with the brew. Just outside of town at Wolves & People Farmhouse Brewery, the experience of drinking handcrafted brews is heightened by the rustic setting in a 1912 barn.

Wine Tasting

Float above the storied vineyards of Oregon

wine country and discover a tasting experience that goes above and beyond. The new Tour DeVine by Heli takes winery hopping to a higher level.

ADVERTISING SECTION

Imagine heightening the experience of tasting some of the

world’s best wine amid the land where its grapes are grown. The new Tour DeVine by Heli does just that–flying from winery to winery above America’s premier, storied vineyards. Your idyllic day is launched with champagne, scones and luscious Oregon fruit at Dundee’s charming Red Hills Market. In Yamhill Valley, the living room of wine country, this market is its kitchen, a hub for the best of the region’s globally renowned wineries and local bounty. Red Hills Market Chef Jody Kropf said the tour exemplifies the tightly knit, collaborative vibe of a community dedicated to creating exceptional food and wine. “When people come out here, they get that feeling that we’re working together to do something special.” With picnic lunch crates (crafted by a local carpenter) in tow on the spacious Eurocopter AS350, four passengers take off for the American Viticultural Area (AVA) of their choice.

The valley opens up and vines cover the hills as far as the eye can see. “Looks like it’s going to be a sevenmountain day,” the pilot says, pointing out landmarks and AVAs in every direction. Operating out of Newberg since 1983, Precision Helicopters launched the group tours in May 2016 to offer an affordable alternative to the exclusive experience. Local pilots know the region and vineyards well, giving detailed information about the landscape and how frost levels and elevation affect winemaking. This limo of helicopters flies smooth and fast, turning a thirty to forty-minute drive into a breathtaking flight in less than ten-minutes. Landing in the vineyard a few steps from the tasting room, guests are greeted by winery staff carrying glasses of wine (as well as curious onlookers with iPhones). “People love it,” says Adel Nemes who works the tasting room at Stoller Family Estate. “It’s so much fun. It’s different, upscale, like ‘Who’s coming–the President?’ ”

An hour is spent tasting pinot noir, syrah, rosé, chardonnay and other varietals, and touring the winery from tasting room to barrel room. The helicopter then descends to whisk guests off for another exhilarating, scenic flight. At the next vineyard, it’s time for a picnic lunch of spicy coriander hamand-butter sandwiches, meats and Manchego cheese with Italian crackers and local hazelnuts. (The picnic box doubles as a shipping crate for wines purchased during the tour.) Precision operations manager Matthew Alvitre said, “Many tours offer fifteen-minute tastings, and in my opinion, that’s a rushed experience. This gives people three flights in four hours at multiple wineries and the collaboration is huge—you’re going with people who know people.”
