OREGON WINE

Come sample the fine vintage wines of the Willamette Valley. With most of these wineries family owned, the winemakers place value in producing high-quality wines. They’re also committed to sustainable practices that aim to keep the Willamette Valley a fertile wine-making region for decades to come. MID-WILLAMETTE VALLEY SIP TRIP

Sky High Brewing

WELCOME TO THE MID-WILLAMETTE VALLEY, where the

region’s craft beverage makers invite you into their tasting rooms and tap houses for the best libations the greater Corvallis area has to offer. In a region proud of its bittersweet apples, rich honey, fragrant hops and golden grains, there’s sure to be a drink creation your taste buds will love. So whether you’re in the mood for a beer, cider or spirits— the Mid-Willamette Valley Sip Trip has a stop for you. Start your trip strong with a taste from one of the region’s craft distilleries. On the north side of town, stop by Spiritopia, which specializes in artisan liqueurs in flavors like ginger, peppermint and strawberry rhubarb. Head south of town to 4 Spirits Distillery, which offers whiskey, gin and vodka in addition to a menu of burgers, sandwiches and popular Stuffed Tator Tots. Lastly, taste the flavored moonshine at Marcotte Distilling, west of Corvallis in the nearby town of Philomath, about five miles from the base of Marys Peak. Looking for a satisfying beer to celebrate a busy day in the valley? Corvallis is overflowing with options. Take a walking tour

of downtown’s brewery scene, starting with Block 15 Brewing, which serves up hop-forward ales, crisp lagers and some barrel aged speciality brews. Also part of the brewer-owned Block 15 company is the European-style pub, Caves Bier & Kitchen downtown and a brewery and tap room in south Corvallis. FARM VISITS

FARM FRESH ALTHOUGH CORVALLIS IS A VIBRANT COLLEGE TOWN, it’s also surrounded by land with rich soils and a mild climate—a farmer’s paradise. Enjoy the bounty from the Willamette Valley’s rich agriculture scene by way of farm-fresh foods and other goods. Take a tour or plan a farm stay, stop into one of the farmers markets and make a few stops along the Mid-Willamette Valley Food Trail.

Peoria Road Farm Market

Mid-Willamette Valley Food Trail

The new self-guided Mid-Willamette Valley Food Trail is an opportunity to explore the working farms of the region at your own pace during any season. Prime time on the farms is typically between May and October. Pick up a copy of this year’s brochure at the Visit Corvallis visitor center or find it online at midwillamettevalleyfoodtrail.com. Explore stops along one of three routes— the Taster’s Tour from Monroe to Albany, the Makers and Innovators Tour from Philomath to Albany or the Flora and Fauna Tour from Alsea to Corvallis. Enjoy an engaging and unique experience at one of the working farms along the trail. Check with individual stops for hours and details and remember to find something you like along the way to bring a taste of your journey back home with you.

Farm stays

There’s no better way to experience the simple pleasures of life than a stay on a working farm, and no better place to do it than here. Visit Leaping Lamb Farm in Alsea, 24 miles toward the coast from Corvallis along Highway 34, for a chance to try delicious fresh foods and breathe in fresh country air. The farm offers overnight stays in a two-bedroom farm cottage or a fourbedroom farmhouse. Guests are invited to pitch in with farm

chores, feed the animals and may even have a chance to brush the resident dusty donkey, Paco. This location can be the perfect home base for your agricultural adventures. In the fall, start a new family tradition with a visit to Donovan’s Place, located on a Christmas tree farm on the edge of Corvallis. Choose and cut down your Christmas tree and bring it home after a stay in one of their guest houses. There’s also a ceramic pottery studio open year-round. If your idea of a farm stay involves complimentary wine tastings, then book the vintage 1930s cabin at Lumos Wine Company, west of Philomath. Take in the scenery and sip award winning wine from organic grapes grown on the property.

FARM VISITS

Farmers markets

Let the farm come to you at the area’s seasonal markets. The Corvallis Farmers’ Market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays from mid-April through November, on First Street between Jackson and Monroe Avenues downtown. Hear live music and shop for local foods from a changing lineup of 20 to 30 vendors on Wednesdays and 50 to 70 vendors each Saturday. Just east of town is the Peoria Road Farm Market, a permanent structure that comes alive seasonally, opening in late April, to offer farm-fresh fruits, vegetables and freshly picked flowers.

Thyme Garden

Gardens, farms and nurseries

To see how the herbs you use in the kitchen are grown, visit the Thyme Garden near Alsea for a lunchtime tour in the summer. Walk through the greenhouses and the aromatherapy conservatory before sitting down to a meal of seasonal dishes using some of the nursery’s 700 varieties of herbs and plants. Just south of Philomath, visit Gathering Together Farm, a certified organic vegetable and fruit farm since 1987. Eat at the restaurant, take a tour and learn about their CSA and VSA food boxes, which feed hundreds of families. In Philomath, stop by Shonnard’s Nursery for flowers and gardening supplies or visit GreenGable Garden, a florist and flower farm that grows daffodils, tulips, irises and sunflowers. North of town, visit Garland Nursery, a fourth-generation familyowned shop with more than six acres of trees, shrubs and flowers. Closer to Corvallis, stop into Davis Family Farms for hanging baskets and farm grown strawberries. In the fall, come for hayrides through the pumpkin fields and other harvest-time activities.

24 HOURS OF EATS

DELICIOUS DAY THE CORVALLIS AREA HAS FLOURISHED over the years into a region rich with culinary creations, from internationally inspired bakeries and desserts to savory brew pub eats, to options for a classy night out for a special occasion. There are more and more choices to tantalize the taste buds and leave you feeling satisfied and quenched. Corvallis is much more than a college town when it comes to dining options, and with so many farms and regional producers in the area, restaurants are blessed with fresh ingredients and local fixings. Good food is the heart of a good trip to the Corvallis area, and it’s also a great way to fill up your itinerary for the day. Here’s just one appetizing game plan for a day of great food in Benton County.

Lunch

Breakfast

Dinner

Start the day early at The Dizzy Hen in Philomath, about a ten minute drive down Highway 20 from downtown Corvallis. Here you’ll find a menu of breakfast, brunch and lunch options, with specific offerings changing by the week. For breakfast, you might try an omelet of broccoli, bacon and garlic scapes or a specialty like pork ragu and grits with a fried egg or a vegan hash of potatoes, broccoli, mushrooms, chard and caramelized onions. This spot also serves mimosas and bloody marys and has a kids menu.

The Dizzy Hen

After your morning activities, settle in at Eats and Treats Cafe, also in Philomath. This restaurant offers a dedicated gluten free menu and “just darn good food and serious BBQ,” according to the eatery’s website. Owners, the McHenry family, first learned in 2007 that all the members of the family were gluten intolerant, inspiring them first to open Big River Grains, a gluten free grain and flour company, followed by Eats and Treats in 2012. The eclectic menu offers a range of barbecue plates and meals, breads (yes, breads) and house-made sauces, as well as soups, salads, sandwiches, tacos, nachos and more.

Top off a great day at del Alma restaurant and bar in downtown Corvallis, where guests will find an elegant dining room with a view of the Willamette River. Enjoy a menu of dishes inspired by Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain, with farm fresh ingredients from around the northwest. Pick something from the long wine list and settle in for your meal. Try the bacon guacamole with hazelnuts or tequila prawns as an appetizer and main dishes including black bean and sweet potato chimichangas and albacore and prawns in crème.

Also look for limited availability seasonal favorites and pack together a box of a dozen choices to take on the go.

Don’t let the name fool you—the fresh-baked-daily treats from Death by Donutz will make you feel as lively as ever. Browse the day’s creations for donut creations like the Oreo, Marionberry Cream Cheese, Dirty Dave (Oreos and peanut butter), Mocha or Caramel Apple Crumble. Custom orders, gluten-free and vegan donuts are also available.

Burst’s Chocolates

New Morning Bakery

A Corvallis staple for more than eighty years, Burst’s Chocolates is a can’t miss gourmet shop offering truffles, nut caramel clusters and ganaches. Each treat is enrobed in fine Guittard chocolate (that’s the good stuff) and hand-garnished at the downtown shop. At select Corvallis hotels, guests are given Burst’s Chocolates as part of a service called SweetTalk. Guests can then order more sweets for delivery using the Corvallis Concierge ToGo app.

Sweet Heart Dessert

Go on a tasty adventure with traditional Chinese pastries at Sweet Heart Dessert, which opened in 2019. The traditional creations use less sugar than typical American desserts, and include treats like matcha or strawberry crepe cakes, chocolate buns and pork floss pastries. Pair a pastry with Chinese bubble tea and enjoy the cute and bright décor at this stop just north of downtown Corvallis.

While open all day, head to New Morning Bakery early to enjoy artisan breakfast pastries, cakes, bars, cookies and more from their display case or try the hazelnut pancakes with marionberry syrup— an Oregon-inspired breakfast treat.

Le Patissier

This north Corvallis French bakery, with a name that translates to “confectioner” in French, opened in 2005 and is still serving up sweet and savory treats more than fifteen years later. Try the layered pastries, apple tarts, turnovers and mouth-watering chocolate croissants.

Pilos Bakery

Stop by Pilos for freshly baked breads, spices, Mexican treats and custom baked cakes. Try a concha, a sweet Mexican bread roll, or a light and fluffy tres leches cake. VISIT CORVALLIS | 2020-21

STROLLING FOR ART Corvallis murals scavenger hunt

Have you visited the murals around Corvallis yet? There aren’t just a few, but more than thirty murals and counting, as eye-catching art continues to pop up on buildings around the city. The new art is thanks in large part to the Corvallis Mural Project, an effort to promote new outdoor artwork for residents and visitors to enjoy. Be sure to check out “Art Alley,” a narrow passageway between Second and Third Streets and just south of Madison Avenue, where a half-dozen outdoor murals are on display. Spend the afternoon solving clues from the mural scavenger hunt, using a map available from the Visitor Center, 420 NW 2nd Street. Learn more at corvallismurals.com.

and Ruth Howland. The project’s result is a series of art installations at the mouths of downtown alleys. Head to visitcorvallis.com to download a map to guide your downtown art journey.

Corvallis Arts Walk

Don’t forget about the art that’s inside, too. Venture into downtown galleries, studios and arts and crafts stores to see more of the bustling Corvallis art scene. Monthly art walks take place from 4 to 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month, when downtown businesses stay open late for art events, demonstrations or music. Go to corvallisartswalk.com for more information or pick up a walking map from any downtown storefront member.

Downtown alley art walk

Don’t let your exploration of art stop with murals. Take a stroll on Madison Avenue downtown to experience the Alley Art Walk beginning on 8th Street. You’ll find more than twenty-five sculptures, photographs, enamel-on-metal reproductions of poems and silkscreen prints. The 12-year Alley Art Project is a creation of the Howland Foundation Fund in the Arts Center Endowment, supported by Jim

The Arts Center

After a day of exploring downtown’s robust art, you won’t want to leave Corvallis without taking a piece of the art scene home with you. Stop by The Arts Center, where you’ll not only see some more art—the center is home to exhibitions, some of which have been featured in the New York Times—but you can browse the well-stocked gift shop, ArtShop, where you’ll find the best selection of arts and crafts in town. Originally built by the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan in 1889, the Carpenter Gothic style Arts Center is also a work of art itself, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Go to theartscenter.net for the latest events, workshops and exhibit information.

Situated on the former Copeland Lumber property, 411 SW Second St. in downtown Corvallis, the new $11.5 million museum will showcase rotating exhibits from the historical society’s impressive collection of more than 120,000 artifacts, including all the relics of Oregon State University’s Horner Museum, which closed in 1995. Say hello to “Bruce the Moose,” once a fixture from the Horner Museum entrance, who has been restored to welcome guests into the new Corvallis Museum. Learn more at bentoncountymuseum.org.

Whiteside Theatre

Historic theaters

Brothers George and Samuel Whiteside are credited with building six theaters in Corvallis during the heyday of Vaudeville entertainment, including the Majestic Theatre in 1913 and the Whiteside Theatre in 1922. A century later, the Majestic and Whiteside are the only theaters built by the Whiteside brothers still standing today, and each plays an important role in the lively entertainment scene in downtown Corvallis. Today the Majestic is a vibrant performing arts center, hosting more than 70 productions and more than 150 performances annually. While originally built as a vaudeville house 107 years ago, the Majestic Theatre was converted into a motion picture house called Varsity Theatre in the 1930s and was eventually closed in 1977. In 1985, the City of Corvallis purchased the theater and a building next door and a citizen-led capital campaign raised over $1 million for renovations, with the theater reopening in 1990. It was then run by as a community nonprofit before becoming part of Corvallis Parks and Recreation in 2015. It’s also a gathering place for nonprofits, businesses, civic groups and clubs. Check out a full calendar of upcoming performances at majestic.org.

When built in 1922, the Whiteside Theatre was the second largest movie palace in Oregon. Built for cinema, it was also home to live stage productions. The theater has survived two fires and a multi-year closure in the early 2000s before the Whiteside Theatre Foundation was formed, bought the theater and began restoration. Today the Whiteside shows classic movies on Wednesdays and hosts concerts and special events. VISIT CORVALLIS | 2020-21

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

TAKE IT OUTSIDE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF BENTON COUNTY’S MILD SEASONS

with an outdoor adventure that suits your style, whether it’s hiking to take in the views, biking through rugged forests, sight-seeing and exploring the outdoors or diving into water sports like fishing, kayaking and swimming. If you’re looking to get out in nature and explore the great outdoors, you’ve found the right place.

Hiking

Corvallis and Benton County are full of miles of multi-use trails great for hiking, with some offering expansive views, scenic strolls through natural areas and parks, meadows of wildflowers and more. Before heading outside, the first stop for prospective hikers should be The Right Trail website at therighttrail.org. You’ll find several hiking options for the mid-Willamette Valley, including options specifically for families or those with dogs, and an interactive map to explore the area. Still not sure which hikes might be right for you? Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

West Summit Trail

Just west of Corvallis in the Bald Hill Natural Area is the dogfriendly West Summit Trail, winding a half-mile through mixed canopy forest up to a breathtaking view of Corvallis and the Willamette Valley. Though the trail is less than a mile out and back, it has a moderately steep elevation gain of 235 feet, which is likely enough to get your heart pumping.

Alsea Falls Recreation Area

Alsea Falls is a forty-five minute drive southwest of town, but those who make the trek are rewarded with two waterfalls, the twentyfoot Alsea Falls and the sixty-foot Green Peak Falls. A 2.8-mile out-and-back trail winds through old growth forests and passes by both waterfalls. Look for blooming rhododendrons, dogwoods and Oregon grapes along the way.

McDonald, Dunn, Peavy and Chip Ross Park

If you’re looking for options, head to the McDonald Forest, Dunn Forest and Peavy Arboretum, a vast network of hiking trails through mature forests about fifteen minutes north of Corvallis. Take Dan’s Trail, which meanders 2.5 miles through the forest to the top of Dimple Hill, where you’ll find beautiful views of Corvallis and the Cascade mountains. The nearby Chip Ross Park also boasts lovely views over Corvallis.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Biking

Many of the same trails fit for hiking are also good for mountain biking. On The Right Trail website, search for trail options by use, and plan your bike outing. If you don’t have a bike or left it at home, there’s no need to worry. Bike rentals are available from Peak Sports downtown, which offers both mountain bikes and cruisers for adults and children. They even have tandem bikes for a playful duo looking to hit the streets together—or a lazy rider looking to get out of pedaling much. For on-the-go rentals, Zagster’s Pedal Corvallis Bikeshare stations are located throughout town, including at the public transit center on 5th Street and Monroe Avenue downtown or on the Oregon State University campus. Download the Zagster app and then hop on an adult-sized bike and hit the road for just $1 per half-hour of riding. Stop by any bike shop or the Visitor Center to pick up a bike trail map, or go to the Visit Corvallis website or the AllTrails app for more cycling info.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Dive in

With summer temperatures in the 80s or low 90s, cooling off in the water is sometimes the only outdoor activity that sounds right. With both the Willamette River and Marys River winding through town, there is no shortage of swimming holes in the Corvallis area. Two good places to jump into Marys River are at the Marys River Natural Area off SW Brooklane Drive and at Pioneer Park, where you’ll find a sandy beach. Also check out the nearby Avery Park, which is great for children and dogs, and has a rope swing into the river. About 16 miles south of Corvallis is Irish Bend Park, a great place for a picnic, camping and a swimming hole to dip in the Willamette River. For a less nature-y option, try the Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis, which boasts four swimming pools both indoors and outdoors and Otter Beach, an outdoor water park with a waterslide, toys and more. Admission is just $3-$6.

Play

In addition to being a seasonal home for geese, the William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge is home to eagles and thousands of other birds. Located about twenty minutes south of Corvallis, the refuge is one of the last remaining intact wet prairies in the valley. Visitors can expect to see Roosevelt elk along the wetlands and marshes, oak savannah, douglas fir forests and more. Visitors can explore the refuge by hiking, biking or driving, and there are hunting and fishing opportunities as well. History buffs will appreciate exploring the outside of the 1855 Fiechter House, located on the refuge, which is believed to be the oldest standing building in Benton County. Stop by the refuge visitor center and gift shop, the Wild Goose Nature Store, 1 mile east of the Bellfountain Road entrance.

Osborn Aquatic Center

Birdwatching and wildlife

Birdwatchers rejoice, as birds flock to this region (get it?) and there are many native year round species of birds calling the area home, as well as migrating Canada geese, who settle in at the William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge each winter. Other popular birding areas include the E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area, Chip Ross Park and Avery Park, Mardi’s Meadow, the JacksonFrazier Wetland and the Beazell Memorial Forest. The Corvallis Audubon Society offers birdwatching events, including monthly half-day field trips. Find more information and sign up for trips at audoboncorvallis.org.

CORVALLIS-TO-THE-SEA TRAIL

TREK TO THE PACIFIC WHETHER IT’S A NEW DAY HIKE YOU’RE AFTER or a thru-hike worthy of a week off of work, the Corvallis-to-the-Sea Trail (C2C) could

be just what you’re looking for. The eastern portion of the trail was opened to the public in 2018 and the brand new west section of the trail was completed last fall, and is expected to officially open in late 2020. The full trail, running from Corvallis to the Pacific Ocean is about 62 miles, and entirely open to hikers, with some sections open to bikers or horses on a seasonal basis. The trail traverses through the Oregon Coast Range, forests and wildflowers, with more than a dozen access points on Forest Service land. Camping is currently available at the mid-point of the trail at the Big Elk Campground and at the Benton County Fairgrounds. Dispersed camping is also allowed on Forest Service lands along the trail. Trail maps are in the works and will include information about streams whose water may be treated for drinking water. Establishing the trail was a seventeen year undertaking led by the non-profit Corvallis-to-the-Sea (C2C) Trail Partnership. The work involved cooperation and support from private landowners, local governments and the U.S. Forest Service. Much of the path is on old gravel logging roads and other sections were established by dedicated volunteers. Find more information at c2ctrail.org.

WINE, WINGS & WHALES

Play

ROAD TRIP! RAIN OR SHINE, WINTER STILL OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES to explore and experience Oregon, including this seven-day experience

on the Wine, Wings and Whales trip. At these stops from Portland to Corvallis to the Pacific Ocean and beyond, stop for wine tastings at some of the region’s cozy wineries, try to spot some of the hundreds of species of birds in the state each winter and spend time at the coast for a chance to see the migrating whale populations.

Day One: Portland to Corvallis (84 miles)

Head straight from Portland to Corvallis, visiting the serene wetlands of the William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge for some wings—winter birding that is. Look for geese, ducks and swans and maybe even a bald eagle. After birding, stop in Philomath to enjoy a wine sampling from Compton Family Wines.

Day Two: Corvallis to Florence (96 miles)

Make your way toward the Oregon Coast via Highway 34, the Marys Peak to Pacific Scenic Byway. After hitting Highway 101, head south to Florence, which offers more than forty miles of coastal dunes in the Siuslaw National Forest. Enjoy birding and wildlife trails here, or take a dune buggy ride.

Day Three: Florence to Yachats (25 miles)

Head out for a whale watching walk along Driftwood Beach. As you travel north toward Yachats, visit the historic Heceta Head Lighthouse and the bridge over Cape Creek, which attracts hundreds of Western gulls bathing in the water. Bring your binoculars to look for whales. For another whaling stop along the way, visit Cape Perpetua for a 70-mile view of the Oregon coast on a clear day.

Day Four: Yachats to Lincoln City (37 miles)

After whale watching in Yachats, drive toward Newport, stopping at Nye Beach to search for more. Then head for Depoe Bay, the whale watching capital of the Oregon coast. Visit the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Whale Watching Center and look for some of the

nearly 20,000 gray whales migrating south in December and January or back north in March.

Day Five: Lincoln City to Amity (57 miles)

Visit the Siletz Bay Wildlife Refuge for bird watching, keeping an eye out for the Western sandpiper, red-necked phalarope or greenwinged teal. While driving inland, visit Chateau Bianca to sample distinctive wines known for their terroir of marine sediment and basalt. Stop at Baskett Slough Wildlife Refuge, where more than 200 species of birds are nesting or stopping through on winter migrations. Once in Amity, visit the Keeler Estate Vineyard.

Day Six: Amity to Eugene (85 miles)

First, head for downtown Albany for exploring and a stop at the Historic Carousel and Museum to ride a carousel of hand-carved animals. Then, once arriving in Eugene, check out an urban winery, Oregon Wine LAB to sample private label William Rose Wines.

Day Seven: Eugene to the Airport (Varies)

In Eugene, see the largest collection of native raptor birds in the Pacific Northwest at the Cascades Raptor Center. For wine, head to Sweet Cheeks Winery, Iris Vineyards or Sarver, near Fern Ridge Reservoir—another exceptional birding site. End your trip with a stop at an important flyway for migrating birds, the Perkins Peninsula, before going to the Eugene or Portland airports or wherever your travels bring you next.

SCENIC BYWAY

MARYS PEAK TO PACIFIC SCENIC BYWAY

Marys Peak

A CAN’T MISS DRIVE IN OUR BACKYARD is the Marys Peak to Pacific Scenic Byway, which winds through the hills about 72 miles from Corvallis to Waldport. Meander up to the highest point in the Coast Range and then down to the breezy coastal town of Waldport. With so many options for pit stops on the drive, no two trips along the byway are quite the same. Here are some suggestions for fun stops on the way.

Benton County Courthouse, Corvallis

Start your trip at this 1889 Italianate-style building, the oldest courthouse in Oregon still used for its original purpose.

Softstar Shoes, Philomath

Get your foot in the door at this shoe shop and see how local leather artisans are producing shoes during a visitors tour. Visit softstarshoes.com for a sneak peek.

Marys Peak

Don’t miss stopping at the highest mountain in the Coastal Range at an elevation of 4,097 feet, and take in the panoramic views of the Willamette Valley and the Cascade Range mountains from the summit and see one of the rare alpine meadows in the Coast Range.

John Boys Alsea Mercantile, Alsea

Stop by this quirky store on Alsea’s Main Street to meet some of the town’s characters and browse the impressive fishing tackle section.

40

Deb’s Cafe, Alsea

Though not quite halfway down the byway to the coast, Deb’s is a great stop for a lunch of comfort food and pies. Or you can use their online menu to order to-go.

Alsea Falls Recreation Area

Have a picnic alongside the Alsea River or check out one of two towering waterfalls at this recreation area.

Hayden Covered Bridge

Take a break from driving to stop for a photo op at this bright white covered bridge, still in use today.

Benton County Pie Company

Stop by the Pie Shack for a cream pie, fruit and berry pie or other treats, like caramel crunch and local jams.

Alsea Bay Historic Interpretive Center, Waldport

Breathe in the fresh coastal air and then stop in to the interpretive center for exhibits about the artistic bridges of Oregon, or catch a clamming or crabbing demonstration during the summer. A new app for the Marys Peak to Pacific Scenic Byway is expected to launch in late 2020. Go to visitcorvallis.com or your app store to download.
