History and General Information
Lane County was named for General Joseph Lane, a rugged frontier hero who was Oregon’s first territorial governor. Pioneers traveling the Oregon Trail in the late 1840s came to Lane County mainly to farm. The county’s first district court met under a large oak tree until a clerk’s office could be built in 1852. A few years later, the first courthouse opened in what is now downtown Eugene. With the building of the railroads, the market for timber opened in the 1880s. Today, wood products are still an important part of the economy in addition to high-tech manufacturing and tourism. Lane County government operates under a home rule charter approved by voters in 1963.

Covered Bridges By: Tom Malone
L
ane County’s covered bridges provide more than simple passage across rivers. They act as pathways through local history and stand as physical reminders of a not-sodistant past. “Lane County has more covered bridges than any other county in Oregon,” says Bob Hart, Executive Director for the Lane County Historical Society. “And Oregon has more covered bridges than any other state besides Indiana.” Cottage Grove claims six of Lane County’s 20 covered bridges. The town’s Covered Bridges Scenic Bikeway provides active access to most of the bridges in the area, including the newly renovated
Chambers Railroad Bridge, the only covered railroad bridge west of the Mississippi River. J. H. Chambers built the Chambers Railroad Bridge in 1925 “to transport logs across the Coast Fork Willamette River to his sawmill on the east side of the bridge,” according to the City of Cottage Grove. After its final day of use in 1951, the bridge decayed steadily until 2006, when government grants and citizen donations funded a massive reconstruction project that saved the bridge’s structural and historical integrity. Most covered bridges in the county receive regular maintenance work through highway funds because
8
Covered Bridges they remain useful stretches of active roads. A majority of the functional structures date back nearly a century. So, why does Lane County have so many covered bridges? During the first half of the 1900s, Oregon’s timber industry flourished. Timber was plentiful and easily accessible, which made it cheap. According to the Lane County Government, World War I raised steel prices, making metal imports to Oregon increasingly expensive. Construction frontrunners built wooden bridges and covered
them with house-like structures to prevent the floorboards from damage by familiar Oregon elements like rain and wind. As a result, a bridge’s framework and structure would remain preserved. Farmers moved herds of animals between grazing lands and used covered bridges as primary sources for river crossings. Open-air bridges discouraged animals from crossing and stalled the progress of a driving herd. “Animals liked going through covered bridges because it reminded them of going into a safe, warm barn,” says Hart. Goodpasture Covered Bridge, built in 1938, stands as the most photographed in the state for its length and photogenic structure. Lowell Covered Bridge serves as Oregon’s widest and was converted into a covered bridge interpretive center in 2006. Constructed in 1920, Mosby Creek Covered Bridge stands as Oregon’s oldest (and it’s still in use today). All but three Lane County covered bridges are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As groups preserve covered bridges for the future, these landmarks of industry provide insight into Oregon’s rugged past.

Consigning Fine Furniture and Home Decor
Fine furnishings have a new home at Fine Consign, a specialty consignment store inside the historic Coburg Inn. Beth Frosland’s idea to create her little shop was inspired partially by the architecture and ambiance of the historic building in Coburg, Ore. With her eye for design (and a lot of paint), Beth transformed the interior of the inn into a sophisticated retail space which showcases her client’s gently-used furnishings and home décor. In addition to consignment items, Beth carries unique gift items, candles, and home décor that will inspire and delight! Interior design is also a focus of Fine Consign, which offers designer lines of upholstered furniture, fabrics, and wallpaper. As an interior designer for over 13 years for Edman Furniture in Eugene, Beth understands the value of quality-built furniture and how to blend and repurpose new and old. Beth’s husband, Don Frosland, owner and operator of The Furniture Clinic, has repaired
and restored furniture for clients throughout the Northwest for more than 30 years. Don is able to apply his craft to Fine Consign furniture so items will look beautiful maximizing their resale value. With an extensive network of contacts, the Froslands have new items arriving every week. Consignment contracts are available for review.

Pearl Buck Center—People Benefiting Community Pearl Buck Center is celebrating its 60th Anniversary this fiscal year. Lisl Waechter founded Pearl Buck Center in 1953, as a school for children with developmental disabilities. Lisl believed that everyone has the right to be productive, to learn and grow. Over time, the organization evolved to provide a life span of educational, vocational, and habilitation services to people with developmental disabilities and their children.
Three Programs are offered at Pearl Buck Center: —Working for a Better Life: Businesses contract with Pearl Buck Center for mailing, packaging, assembly, manufacturing, and other jobs that clients perform in the vocational training center. The Engraving Department is the newest area, offering quality engraving and sublimation services at cost-effective prices. Also, many adults are placed in community based employment to learn skills and earn a wage and perform a needed job. —Life Enhancing Activities Program (LEAP) offers adults with profound developmental disabilities opportunities to experience community outings and recreational activities in a cheerful day program environment. —Pearl Buck Preschool: Since 1976, Pearl Buck Preschool has provided specialized services to children born without disabilities, and their parents who have special needs. Pearl Buck Preschool has achieved the prestigious Oregon Program of Quality(OPQ)Designation. People Benefiting Community is a motto alive and well at Pearl Buck Center. O
regon Coast travelers know Florence as a sand dune playground, but the coastal town has another activity that’s growing in popularity: cycling. The official Highway 101 Bike Route splits Florence in half and creates a convenient pathway for cyclists of any level. Florence is the halfway point for the Oregon Coast Bicycle Route and the starting (or ending) point for the TransAmerica Trail that crosses the entire continent. “Florence gets cycling tourists who travel from Astoria to Brookings, sometimes even farther,” says Tim Hewitt, owner of Bicycles 101 in Florence. In 2002, Cycle Oregon led about 2,000 participants through Florence as part of its weeklong tour. With more bike routes than the average coastal town, Florence caters to every cycling demographic. Most routes feature flat terrain, though some summit hills and follow valleys. Trails curve with rivers and provide scenic lake views. “We even have mountain biking trails and hard-sand trails on the beach for bikes with fat tires,” says Hewitt. The Highway 101 Bike Route provides stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Portions of the route scrape cliff edges and feature scenic viewpoints for the
casual photographer along the way. A lucky cruiser can see the famed Sea Lion Caves from a carefully chosen lookout stop. An estimated 10,000 cyclists ride in or through Florence during the summer and fall peak seasons each year, according to The Overland Triker author Steve Greene. That number will increase as Florence and the surrounding areas continue to improve the bike route infrastructure. Florence officials added new bike lanes inside city limits and refurbished existing routes recently. Florence residents show support for their bike-friendly town by participating in a weekly Tuesday night cycling cruise around the area, hosted by Hewitt’s bike shop. “I enjoy cycling because it puts me in nature,” says Hewitt. “I can cycle any time and any place. Once you have a bike, you don’t need to pay to ride. You can just go.”

Tri-Counties - Junction City, Harrisburg & Monroe
Serving the communities of Junction City, Harrisburg, & Monroe Oregon
Take a stroll down the streets of Junction City, Harrisburg, or Monroe and you will feel the relaxing atmosphere that is our Tri-County area. Whether you’re visiting our area or considering relocation, you will find the communities to be friendly and full of activities. The rural charm of the area makes the three communities an ideal location to live. All three communities have excellent local schools and numerous community events. We’re located between the larger cities of Eugene and Corvallis, allowing opportunities for expanded shopping and entertainment. Access to higher education is close, with the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, Northwest Christian University, Lane Community College, and Linn-Benton Community College just short distances away. Visitors to the communities will find a rural area filled with a variety of activities for all ages. Many will want to visit the local farms and sample the fresh produce grown in the area, or visit one of the country bakeries for a real treat. Museums in each community tell the history of the area with fine exhibits. A variety of community activities take place throughout the year, including a Fourth
of July celebration, classic automobile show, pet parades, Scandinavian Festival, and holiday light parades in each community. There are several streams for fishing, hiking trails, and biking trails. You can check out the area’s golf courses and fine wineries as well. There is something for everyone in Junction City, Harrisburg, and Monroe. Stop by and enjoy the rural pace.

Health & Beauty My name is Laura Vaughn.
I decided that I wanted to be an esthetician after I got my first facial. I wanted to make people feel happy, relaxed, and make their skin amazing! I graduated as Student Body President from the Northwest Institute of Esthetics in Eugene, Oregon in May 2011. I completed their 1,200-hour program even though the state requires only 600 hours for certification. I wanted to be as highly educated as possible. Upon graduation, I took my NCEA exam, which is a national-level esthetician test. In order to take this test, I had to read additional training material and take an additional NCEA class. After I passed the NCEA test, I gained professional status as a skin care expert and surpassed the NCEA’s 1,200-Hour Esthetician Job Task Analysis competency standards. I received the highest skin care credentials available in the United States and professed to adhere by the esthetician professional code of ethics. As a practicing esthetician, I do facials, full-body waxing, eyelash extensions, and lash and brow tinting. Taking care of your skin is extremely important. Your skin is the first thing people see and it’s a part of your wardrobe that you wear every day. Maintaining healthy skin leads to positive self-esteem and confidence. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it protects you from the elements. Today, a majority of people damage their skin from sun overexposure, tanning beds, smoking, the wrong skin care products and more. To make your skin healthy and beautiful, you not only need to maintain a skin care treatment (facial) every five weeks, but you must use quality skin care products as well. Your esthetician can help find treatments and products that suit your individuality. Our Soli-Tone LED machine has won six American Spa Professional’s Choice awards since 2005. This machine selects the proper blend of colors and wavelengths to treat redness, acne, pigmentation and aging skin. It lifts and tones the facial muscles and skin as well. We also have a crystal microdermabrasion machine to facilitate the process. I offer several different types of facials. Each facial comes with a consultation and a personal skin care regimen designed to fit your individual needs.

For a full-cranial hair replacement, come see our beautiful Follea hair systems. Our clients love the silky natural hair and innovative gripper cap. We have a stateof-the-art custom mold machine if your head requires a special shaped cap.
Insurance coverage We are now a National Preferred Provider for cranial prosthetics, which allows us to bill your medical insurance directly for your hair system, if you would like. Generally, insurance coverage includes any medical cause for hair loss, such as male or female pattern baldness, alopecia, or chemotherapy.
Veterans Ask your VA provider about hair replacement. Mirage is now an authorized vendor to the Veteran’s Administration.
Salon Services In addition to our hair replacement services, Mirage is a full service salon offering the latest trends in coloring, and innovative cutting, styling, smoothing and non-damaging color removal. See our web site for more info. Our salon is conveniently located on the second floor of the Oakway Center on Coburg Road in Eugene, Oregon. Consultation rooms are private and comfortable. Call us for a free appointment to discuss your options.

MEDICAL
www.firemed.org
What is FireMed?
FireMed is the lifesaving emergency ambulance membership program of the Eugene, Springfield, Lane Rural Fire Departments and Life Flight Network. FireMed Basic covers the member’s out-of-pocket expenses for medically necessary ground ambulance services and transportation to the nearest appropriate hospital, provided by the Eugene, Lane Rural, and Springfield Fire Departments. Ambulance transport from the hospital to the residence is not a member benefit. FireMed Plus includes all benefits of FireMed Basic, plus air ambulance service provided by Life Flight and its network of reciprocal air ambulance providers.
Why Do I Need FireMed?
Most health insurance policies cover only a percentage of ambulance charges—leaving you to pay the difference. In these cases, FireMed fills the gap. Even if you do not have insurance, FireMed will cover you for medically necessary ambulance treatment and transportation in most of Oregon. If you don’t use an ambulance, your money stays in the ambulance fund to make emergency medical care better for everyone. 74
Senior Living
How Does FireMed Work?
Should a member require emergency ambulance treatment or transportation, the ambulance service will bill the member’s insurance coverage (if any) and accept that reimbursement as payment in full.
Do I Need To Have Insurance To Join?
Membership is open to anyone in our service area, regardless of their insurance coverage. If you do not have any benefits covering ambulance care, then your membership covers the full amount of the ambulance charges.
Who Is Eligible To Join FireMed?
Membership is open to residents in the Eugene Fire & EMS, Lane Rural Fire/Rescue and Springfield Fire & Life Safety ambulance service areas. Even if you live outside these areas, there is probably a FireMed program where you live. (If you are in doubt as to whether you live in our ambulance service area, please call 541-726-3636.)
Who Is Covered Under My Membership?
All permanent residents living at your address, living together as a family unit. Please inform us whenever you have changes to your household account during the year.
What If I Decide Not To Join?
We will still provide you and your household with excellent emergency service, but you could be responsible for the full cost of your ambulance bill. That could be more than $1,800 for emergency ground ambulance and much more for emergency air medical transport.

Oakridge: Mountain Biking Paradise

A
By: Tom Malone
What makes Oakridge an increasingly popular destination for South American, African, and European adventurers? Mountain biking. With its 350 miles of pristine-yet-rugged trails, Oakridge attracts annual adventurers from all over the world. “Oakridge is a mountain biking Mecca,” says Greg Zimet, former University of Oregon cycling team member. “The views are incredible.” The terrain caters to intermediate and advanced mountain bikers, but roughly 20 percent is dedicated to beginners. The town’s trail network specializes in single track trails, meaning the path is wide enough for one bike. Tracks weave through forests, along rivers, up mountains, and down valleys, providing an adventurous Oregon wilderness ambiance. “Our trails are special because of their length, quantity, and quality,” says Eugene Cathcart, service manager at Oakridge’s Willamette Mountain Mercatile. “We have more mountain bike-legal single track trails than almost anywhere else in the country. Our trails are also much longer than any others you’ll find elsewhere.”
biking events that encourage adventurers of all ages and skill levels to participate. The Fat 55 Mountain Bike Race provides an opportunity for children to delve into the Oakridge trails. The Cascade Cream Puff, one of the nation’s first 100-mile races, focuses on the accomplished trail navigator. Cathcart works with local government officials and the Greater Oakridge Area Trail Stewards (GOATS) “to protect, create, and enhance quality trail experiences for mountain bikers”, in accordance with the group’s mission statement. In addition to mountain biking, the town offers water sport recreation areas and, in the winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. “You can go for a long bike ride and relax with some water sports afterwards,” says Cathcart. As the mountain biking community in Oakridge grows, so will the reputation of Oakridge as an adventure destination. “Mountain biking is a good way to get out, explore, and do something fun at the same time,” says Cathcart. “Personally, I love the adrenaline rush.”
Oakridge draws mostly cross-country mountain biking enthusiasts, though the town provides extensive downhill trails as well.Oakridge hosts annual mountain
