ELISE HARPER By: Orchee Sorker

BORN IN THE CITY OF MEMPHIS, COUNTRY SINGER ELISE HARPER REVEALS HER LIFE, JOURNEY ON A NETFLIX SERIES “SING ON!”, AND HER RECENT BILLBOARD AND MUSIC ROW RADIO RECOGNIZED SINGLE “DIRT” WHICH WAS RELEASED IN MAY 2020.

LIFE BEFORE CAREER I have always loved to sing and started taking singing lessons when I was 12 years old. I did every show or competition I could enter. I grew up hunting and fishing with my dad, so I love being outdoors. After high school, I went to the University of Memphis for 5 years on a full-ride scholarship. I toured in the University ensemble group, Sound Fuzion, all over the south. When I graduated from college, I saved up for a year and moved to Nashville right away. MUSIC GENRE & INFLUENCES My genre is definitely contemporary country. I just love mixing pop beats with real instruments and meaningful downhome, heartfelt lyrics. My biggest influence is Celine Dion. I adore her and look to her for inspiration all the time. I also love Michael Jackson and Shania Twain, they are such great performers. I can pretty much replicate any genre from Opera to Rap. I’ve tried it all but something about country music just sticks with me. It’s probably that Tennessee twang I can’t get out of my voice. WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE BEING IN THE NETFLIX SERIES "SING ON!" LIKE? I had the best time! I got flown over to London for free and got a chance to win money for singing, I couldn’t ask for a better opportunity! I stumbled across a random Instagram ad on one of my friend's pages to sign up for a karaoke contest. The ad said cash prize and I thought it would be fun to sign up. Next thing I know, I am driving to a random hotel in Nashville for a casting call and singing audition. I didn’t realize that it was a TV show at the time I auditioned. I got a call back from the singing audition and did a couple of zoom interviews. Next, I am being told to get my passport updated because I was going to England to film a TV Show. My favorite thing about the show was meeting all the wonderful contestants. We formed a lifelong friendship that only people in that stressful situation can understand. It was also super cool to meet Tituss Burgess, he was so nice! WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO WRITE SONGS? Anything can be used for inspiration in writing a song, a feeling, a quote, another lyric, a person, or a picture, I could go on forever. Writing a good song is about being clever, captivating your audience, and a catchy hook. When I write a song, it is different every time. Sometimes I come up with the melody first, other sessions I come in with an idea and a couple of phrases. You can even walk into a session where the track is already produced and you just write words to the music. The process is always different, it doesn’t get boring, that’s why I love it.

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION AND SONGWRITING PROCESS WHEN WRITING YOUR LATEST SINGLE "DIRT"? That day we came into the writing room knowing that we were going to be working with a more rock-type producer (Andrew Baylis). I wanted to write something up-tempo and powerful at the time because all I had were sad ballads. One of the co-writers, Craig Wilson, came into this idea with a verse and chorus idea for “Dirt.” I loved it right away because I have “Dirt” on an ex-boyfriend that could do some damage. However, I decided to keep it classy and just write a song about the jerk. We wrote the song in September of 2020, the song came to life quickly, and we decided to release it as my next single.

WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU LIVE BY? I don’t just live by one so I’ll give you 3. 1. I am a strong believer in the “Golden Rule - treat others the way you would want to be treated.” It’s easy to get a big head or think you’re something special. We are all just humans, it’s important to be considerate and kind to each other. 2. Keep it professional - when you are out at a work event, show, or gathering you are your own business card. People are watching, and the way you carry yourself is how you represent yourself. If you feel like you want to have one more drink, it’s probably best not to do it. 3. Keep your word - let your yes be yes and your no be no. If you say you are going to do something then you need to follow through and do it. Obviously, there will be things that come up and are out of your control, people understand that, but do your best to keep your word.

EMMA KLEIN Originally from Bel Air, Maryland, pop singer-songwriter Emma Klein gives insights about her latest release “Off My Mind”, her American Idol journey, and the music industry. Her love for music came at an early age. Growing up in a household where music and the beach bonded the family, Klein was influenced by artists like Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, Norah Jones, and John Mayer. When she was little, she loved musical theater and country music because of the vivid storytelling present. From a young age, she and her family performed mini-concerts for the neighborhood. Klein knew she wanted to pursue music in the future. After high school, Klein chose to attend Belmont University.

Over the past year with the COVID19 situation, motivation has come and gone for Klein. She says, “You can't force creativity. When I was alone for such a long time, I found myself having fewer ideas and things to write about.” Klein expresses that she likes how in Nashville where she has friends who enjoy both music and that like to do the same kind of things as her. She explains, “There are so many other things that I love to do. So, I find that a lot of my friends that do music feel the same way. We'll just hang out, go on walks, or go workout. I love reading and watching good TV. So, I want to set aside time for things that make me happy besides music, because I never want music to become a job, even though it is my job.” Klein conveys that her three favorite moments in performances would have to be the first show she did on tour with Bobby Bones, the Hawaii performance on American Idol S17, and the BentoLiving Chestnut Hill Rooftop Show.

The first show on tour with Bobby Bones was in Denver, Colorado. Klein describes, “It was a sold-out theater, and it was the first time that I was ever opening for anybody in my life. It was just me and a guitar. I had no idea how this was going to go. I got a standing ovation afterward and it was the coolest moment of my life. It was crazy. That was one of my favorite performances ever--especially because it wasn't like I was the best singer or the best songwriter or anything. I think I felt comfortable enough to be myself. I think that that's when I realized I don't need to perform, to perform. I can be myself, and that is enough.” With that said, Klein learned the highs and lows of touring. During Klein’s time on American Idol, she got the opportunity to sing on the beach in Hawaii. She says, “Honestly, it was the coolest experience. I was like, what? I couldn't have planned this myself. It was just wild how that whole thing happened. Cause I'd been through a hard year, and I wanted to travel, but then American Idol happened, and I was like, ‘okay, well I won't get to travel.’ But then I ended up getting to travel because of it. That was awesome. Seeing my family out in the audience…it was a good feeling.” Community and connection were the two aspects Klein appreciated about Idol. The rooftop show in Nashville, Tennessee was the first big show Klein performed after not playing shows because of the COVID-19 pandemic. She reveals, “I think I kind of forgot how much I loved performing until that night. It just made me feel so connected to everybody. It was cool when people were singing words to my songs. I didn't know that people would know them.” Her latest released single “Off My Mind” is included in her Love Me Too EP. She expresses her inspiration was from a relationship she was in. “It was just really hard for me for like two years, and I couldn’t get past that. I went to Ireland for a study abroad trip at Belmont. We were all going on a hike one day, and I was looking at the most beautiful cliffs over the oceans and blue skies. It was just like the most spectacular view I'd ever seen. I was thinking about that guy, and I had the melody kind of pop into my head, how the song starts off like, ‘somehow you still haunt me from 3000 miles away.’ I was like, ‘oh, I need to write this now.’ Then, I got back to my hotel after that day and just sat down for like an hour and wrote that song. I've never written a song that quickly, especially by myself. So that's what that song came out of. Yeah, that's the #2 song in the sequence of the story, which kind of follows like the beginning of that, to how it fell out, to how I got over that person, and to how important it is to love yourself.”

If there is one thing Klein could change about the music industry, it would be improving songwriters’ rights. “Songwriters need to get the better end of the deal. Songwriters are not making as much as they deserve. Streaming kind of ruined that.” This year, she hopes to play more and more as life has begun to feel more normal, also hoping to open a show to somebody she admires.
