A book for youngsters to learn the secrets hiding in a sheet of paper. It all begins with a cloud, that brings the rain, that waters the tree and makes it grow. The lumberjack cuts down the tree and in the factory the wood is cooked until it turns into paper pulp.

From Egypt to China by way of India and Japan, this was a secret kept under lock and key until… it got to Europe! A journey spanning many centuries that tells us the origin of books and paper.

MARTINA MANYÀ (Spain) is an illustrator working between Lisbon and Barcelona. She’s the author of the picture book CRACK! (Orfeu Negro, 2017). She works with various media and formats and likes to experiment with different visual languages.

The Things Things Do When No One Is Looking

Luís Leal Miranda & Carolina Celas

This is a book of what ifs. What if objects came to life? What if an umbrella wanted to be a walking stick? What if a box of cookies turned into a drum?

Let’s call it, then, a visual essay on the power of our imagination. Or a search for the meaning of things that don’t mean anything at all. To cut a long story short, nothing will ever be quiet anymore, especially if our paper clips keep on dancing... Don’t you think so too?

CAROLINA CELAS (Portugal) studied at the Royal College of Art and is an awarded illustrator. Her work explores detail, humour and the surreal. Carolina won the Big Revelation Prize 2017 and a Special Mention at Ilustrarte (Portugal) 2018, as well as other awards, for her book HORIZON.

Noa, Oscar, Khadija, Sara and Cheng want to put on a show! They each have their own ideas. But, artistic differences aside, anything is possible! Ready? Lights, curtain... TOI TOI TOI! Or... break a leg!

Catarina's new book is a reflection on the nature of theatre and the importance of teamwork when creating a show. In the end, we'll be surprised by the different ways of wishing "good luck" before a performance.

CATARINA SOBRAL (Portugal) is an award-winning illustrator. She's worked in graphic design, animation and art direction and won the Bologna Book Fair's International Award for Illustration 2014.

WHAT PLANET IS THIS?

Eduarda Lima

What if, one seemingly ordinary night, all electricity went down? With no phones, no computers, no television, we turn to an old Encyclopedia that takes us on a journey to discover some of the many wonders of the World and inspires us to bring Nature into our cities.

From the Mendenhall Glacier to the Northern Lights, with stops at Socotra Island and the Great Coral Reef, we relearn how to look around us and notice the small and the big things. As with her debut album THE PROTEST, Eduarda continues to invite us to step beyond ourselves and embrace the natural world.

EDUARDA LIMA (Portugal) is an award-winning illustrator and 2D animator. She studied architecture at the University College of London and Motion-Design at the London College of Communication.
