Orhan has always enjoyed the process of designing and building new creations and his childhood in Kosova taught him the value of well-built housing in communities. As a result, in 2016, he started his own business, MK Construction Group Corp Although, as with all small businesses, it took a lot of hard work to get the new venture off the ground, soon Orhan was contributing beautifully designed and well-constructed homes, apartments, and different hospitality and commercial spaces to the New York skyline
His customer base grew steadily, with satisfied customers helping to spread the word about MK Construction's great work, and seven years later the company is stable and continues to create beautiful spaces for families and businesses. Recently, Orhan began working in the New Jersey area to acquire distressed properties, renovate them and sell them, helping to ensure that the property and housing markets in the area remain sustainable and New Jersey residents have access to high-quality housing
Humble Beginnings
Orhan Sokoli was born in Kosova in 1985. The war in that country took the life of his father and other family members and, after completing his elementary and high school education in Europe, it soon became clear that the social and economic situation in his country of birth was no longer viable for a bright future.
In 2003, Orhan immigrated to the US on an F-1 visa for university students He studied on a soccer scholarship at St Francis College - a private Franciscan college in Downtown Brooklyn, New York - and graduated in 2007 In starting his career, Orhan made sure that he absorbed as
much knowledge as he could from every position he held and worked his way up in the construction industry until he was ready to start his own company.
Paying It Forward
Sokoli's childhood experience in war-torn Kosova installed in him a deep understanding of how children in under-resourced households suffer. Now, as a successful businessperson, he has committed himself to help children who require urgent access to healthcare - specifically expensive operations or specialized treatment - that their families cannot afford
Sokoli has two young daughters, and he feels grateful to be able to give them access to healthcare and education and, where possible, hopes to help less-resourced children to access the same standard of care in their time of need.
Business Is a Team Sport
Sokoli has always been a talented soccer player - the sport, after all, helped fund his college studies in America - and even though he now only plays the sport as a pastime to keep fit, he says that being part of a team sport from such a young age undoubtedly helped to shape his leadership skills and ability to run a business.
Now, every day at MK Construction and every other business venture he engages in, feels like the most important match day of his life Soccer has helped him to understand how every person on the team is vitally important and there is no place for individual egos or a desire for power in a successful team.
Just as soccer teams play for the fans as much as they do for the win, he runs his business for his customers. He has found that when customers are happy with the product or service a business provides, they become like fans of a sports team and will walk a journey through thick and thin with that team.
Remember Your Roots
As much as Orhan Sokoli has embraced the United States as his new home, and although Kosova still holds many painful memories for him, it feels that it is important to remember where you have come from, and make life better there for others where possible.
As such, he gets involved in quite a few charity initiatives that aid children in Kosova in the hopes that they, too, will be able to build lives for themselves as he has. Although the country of his birth was not able to offer him the life he now lives, he hopes that he will be able to pay forward the blessings that he has received through hard work and perseverance.
Orhan feels that no matter how far across the globe you travel, your roots always remain embedded in you, and he credits his work ethic and perseverance to the difficult childhood he experienced in Kosova Although it was far from ideal, that time in his life made him the man, father, and businessperson he is today and he cannot forget that part of his life
