A LARGE CAMEO OF MEDUSA OF EXTRAORDINARY SIZE AND PROPORTIONS, 1ST-2ND CENTURY AD

A large cameo in agate of the head of Medusa, shown three quarters towards the left. This exceptional cameo is part of a series that is commonly found throughout the Roman Empire and represents the amulet power of Medusa to ward off evil. The subject is shown with wings on her upper head and two coiled serpents under her chin. The high relief is all the more unusual as to find a stone which has such a large volume of lighter colored material is rare indeed. The stone is concave at the back and is highly polished which befits such an object. The size itself begs the question as to what purpose it might have been used for. While there exist a class of large cameos which are termed 'Phalera', these are drilled through the body and must have served as suspended decorations for apparel. Here the object might have been inlaid into something larger such as a statue or some similar larger object. Sardonyx agate. Roman 1st-2nd century AD In any case such a unique object must have been made for a client of the highest status and means and deserves a place among the finest cameos to have come down to us from antiquity. 60 by 60 by 35 mm. CAMEO OF CONSTANTINE THE GREAT IN A GOLD MOUNT. 4TH.AD An amethyst cameo of the Emperor Constantine I otherwise know as the great. The drop shaped cameo is mounted in a gold openwork mount with a hoop for suspension. The emperor is shown facing in three quarters relief wearing a cuirass which is mainly obscured by a cloak that is held with a circular brooch on his right shoulder. He is shown as a mature man and resembles closely many portraits of him with his characteristic hooked nose, protuberant ears and strong chin. The identification is also made clear by the use of the Christogram rendered in openwork or ‘opus interrasile’ at the back of the mount, enclosed in a wreath engraved upon the surrounding surface. The openwork sheet is soldered to a band which encloses the cameo and in turn a decorated border in the form a an ‘egg and dart’ motif is soldered to the surround. A moulded sheet is fashioned into the loop held by two rivets at the top of the pendant. This pendant would have been worn by a woman from the highest ranks of Roman society and almost certainly from the imperial family itself. For the date we must look around 337 around the time of his death. While Constantine was officially converted on his deathbed, such an obvious reference to religion would have been displayed by his sons who succeeded him. As such we. Cameo: 31 by 36 mm. A ROMAN OR BYZANTINE GOLD RING WITH A CAMEO OF A PARROT. RING 5/6TH.C.A.D. CAMEO 1st.c.A.D. An early Byzantine/late Roman ring with a Roman cameo of a parrot perched on a palm frond. The parrot was a popular subject in the early Empire, no doubt for its intelligence and guile. This ring is a good example of an earlier stone, or inlay, being used in later antiquity. The reason for this relatively common phenomenon is that after the third century A.D. the skills of glyphic carving rapidly declined in the Roman Empire. By the fourth century only a few workshops remained in the metropolitan centres such as Rome, Constantinople and Alexandria. Even then, the output was small and often quite crude. Therefore earlier stones must have been stocked by merchants who would offer their clients the work of earlier centuries. This practice continued through the ages until in Renaissance Europe the engravers of the classical period could be matched. 21 mm x 23 mm PROVENANCE: From a European collection formed in the 1980's. Such cameos were produced in official workshops and would have been distributed to high ranking officials and their families. Behind him walk two attendant guards who also hold spears as well as bow cases on their backs. The encasing gold mount is decorated with filigreed ‘S’ shaped wires. The ruler depicted is almost certainly Artaxerxes I who ruled from 465-424 BC. His reign was long and eventful, finally concluding a peace with the Greeks with the war that his father has started. Such a seal would have been in the possession of someone in the highest echelons of Persian society, most probably an official near to the Great King. Dimensions: 27 by 32 mm. Lot 266 __________________________________________________

A LARGE PAIR OF GRECO-ROMAN GOLD EARRINGS WITH GARNET AFRICAN HEADS, 2nd Century BC-1st Century AD This exceptional pair of African head pendant earrings originate from Greece, from the third to second century BC. Images of Ethiopians and Nubians were popular in Egyptian art but were relatively rare in the Mediterranean world until the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great in the late fourth century BC suddenly exposed the Greeks to the peoples of the African continent. As part of this new and intriguing Nilotic landscape, images of Africans evoked the distant and exotic cultures at the edge of the known world. The popularity of Nilotic themes coupled with a Greek tradition in jewelry of elaborate figural pendants (for example, beads, acorns, vessels, and female heads) led to the depiction of Nubians and Ethiopians as part of the popular repertory of wearable art. Initially, heads were fashioned wholly in gold, but by the late third and early second century, semi-precious stones were incorporated into the composition, as here. Materials rich and warm in color, such as carnelian, sardonyx, amber, and garnet, were all transformed into African figures, not only rendering each piece more elaborate, but also imbuing them with a striking liveliness and depth of character. The use of gemstones set into gold jewelry remained a popular practice in the early Roman period; precious stones were said to have held magical properties and were considered markers of high social status. Pendants and earrings in the form of African heads seem to have been particularly popular in Italy, with examples known from Bari and Ruvo. This pair not only have the heads of the Africans rendered in garnet but also have large oval garnet cabochon’s at the centre of the oval wire decorated main element which attached to the ear. Also at the top of the oval element a chain is attached with a section rendered in ‘v’ shaped links. The chain would have assumedly hung around the ear. In terms of scale and the style of execution these are among the finest examples known. 118 mm long with the chain extended. A ROMAN INTAGLIO OF A FACING MAN IN BROWN GARNET, 1ST CENTURY AD

Lot 286 ______________________________________

ROMAN INTAGLIO WITH TWO GLADIATORS. 1st c AD.

An intaglio in hessonite(?) or brown carnelian, showing the portrait of a man three quarters facing with drapery over his right shoulder and a caduceus behind his left. The subject probably is an adherent of a cult of Mercury and the prominence of the symbol exemplifies this.An extremely fine intaglio from the early first century AD. 20 by 15 mm. Estimate € 1500 - € 2000

An orange carnelian intaglio showing two gladiators with similar equipment engaged in combat. One hold a glades hidden behind his shield and the other has a spear with a harpe finial. 1.8 by 1.3 cm. A GARNET CAMEO OF HERCULES, 1ST/2ND CENTURY BC A Hellenistic cameo of strong individual features probably of the Seleucid/Ptolemaic dynasties. Hercules is a well known protector of both the Seleucid and Lagid dynasties and such cameos have been known to have been found frequently in both their empires and kingdoms in the past. The concave scalloping of the back suggests this dating and this ring could have been mounted in a ring or a pendant. Given the strong features of the diety we could well be looking at the individualized features of a particular prince or monarch. 20 by 15 mm. PROVENANCE acquired in London antique hypermarket before 2000s Estimate € 1000 - € 1200

Lot 288 ______________________________________

ROMAN CITRINE INTAGLIO OF HERCULES, 1st c.BC/AD

A Roman intaglio carved in a lentoid citrine. The subject is a vigorously engraved bust of Hercules to the right. The subject is beautifully rendered with the facial features in particular being worked in a sculptural manner. Hercules was a very popular subject This is a typical product of the age of Augustus when many Greek engravers came to work in Rome to satisfy the huge market for engraved gemstones that the peace and the prosperity of his reign created. A small chip to the upper part of the stone does not distract from the composition. 16 x 16 mm Provenance: acquired in London antique hypermarket before 2000s Estimate € 1000 - € 1200

Lot 289 ______________________________________

AN EROTIC GARNET INTAGLIO, 17TH-18TH CENTURY AD

A large garnet intaglio showing a couple in sexual congress, the scene has almost certainly been copied from a famous bronze spintria issued under Augustus or Tiberius showing a couple in a similar position on a bed. Here the couple are shown on a Nile boat with an oil lamp suspended from the prow. Below the boat among the waves are various sea creatures. Such intaglios would have been sold to visitors to Italy from the north of Europe before the period of the Napoleonic wars. Diameter: 18 mm. Provenance: acquired in London antique hypermarket before 2000s Estimate € 2000 - € 3000
