I’m afraid of heights. – Dennis Himes, Ice Haus General Manager
“BRAN THOUGHT ABOUT IT. ‘CAN A MAN STILL BE BRAVE IF HE’S AFRAID?’ ‘THAT IS THE ONLY TIME A MAN CAN BE BRAVE,’ HIS FATHER TOLD HIM.” – GAME OF THRONES
By Steve Wright - - After a winter like the one in our rearview mirror, it’s perfectly reasonable we commit the whole of this year’s love-labor to the notion of monsters. And fear. And things that go bump. While it’s with equal reason that we should look back and shudder at the absence of snow and abundance of confusion across the past 12 months, looking forward is more the preferred optic around here—if for no other reason than where we’re going tends to be at least as interesting as where we’ve been. Plus, like Tony Danza says, “It’s tough to focus when you’re always looking backwards.” And if a Tony Danza quote isn’t enough to properly frame your fears, well… While things that I’m fearful of (the construction of ponytails, clam bellies, red cards) might strike no particular dread in the next guy, suffice to say we all have our own demons to wrestle. If you hang the fear of another mopey season in your closet, though, feel free to air it out; Jay Peak has never, in its recorded history, gone two consecutive seasons with less than 300” of natural snow (208” last year). Fear of jinxes? Go find some wood to knock.
6
This year’s Jay Magazine will give you ample opportunity to redress your fears through the act of seeing folks address their own. Check out Elsa Schafer’s involvement in our burgeoning Jay Peak Adaptive Program (pg. 11), or look at what Monica and Ryan Caffrey have done on the big stage and in shallow water in the Jay People piece (pg. 9). Dean Zorn’s fear is generally connected to empty glasses and oversold classes, but feel free to get in his head (pg. 10) and let us know what you find. He’s a perennial Best of Snowboard coach here at the resort and doesn’t scare easily. If night bumps concern you, skim through our Late Night Splash scene in the Pump House Indoor Waterpark (pg. 40) and learn how shining a light on your fears has a way of melting them into something pretty enjoyable. In between all of this, you can plan your Jay Peak vacation (pg. 51), get an insider look at what makes our employees’ goosebumps rise (annotations throughout) and try to figure out what makes Lift Operations Manager Chris Martin sweat (pg. 28). And, really, when all is said and done, the best way to fight your fears is to run right through them. Or down them, as it were. That’s what the mountain tells us, at least. Best to mind it.

FLOW RIDERS

“WHENEVER IT’S NOT A GOOD DAY ON THE MOUNTAIN, WE CAN JUST PUT OUR SWIMSUITS ON AND DO OUR THING AT THE WATERPARK.”
Jay Peak may sit 200 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, but that doesn’t stop Jay locals Monica and Ryan Caffrey from surfing their way to the top. The siblings are members of the Flow Dogs, a community that competes and recreates on the Double Barrel FlowRider, Jay Peak’s gushing leviathan that inhabits the Pump House Indoor Waterpark. Over the last five years Monica and Ryan, aged 13 and 12 respectively, have been Raised Jay, carving waves in the Pump House Indoor Waterpark as much as they slay powder on the wintery slopes outside. “It’s right there in our backyard, so we can go work on our skills constantly,” says Ryan. Time spent flow riding also helps with snowboarding, honing balance and avoiding the dreaded “edge catch” that can send snowboarders crashing into the slope. The soft and bouncy surface on the synthetic wave is a much more forgiving than a bail on savage Vermont hardpack.
The Caffrey kids have traveled to compete as far away as Florida and Alabama, earning regular spots on the podium. Their most recent boons? Taking home medals from the 2016 National Flow Tour: Monica with a first place overall win in the National Women’s Flowboard division, and Ryan with third place in the National Youth Flowboard division. When competing, they have between 30 and 45 seconds to impress judges with their balance, style and growing repertoire of tricks. While happy to be finding their flow at Jay Peak every week, Monica and Ryan have a common goal to take their sport as far as they can. “I’d love to travel, meet new people, see other waves and have all those experiences and memories,” says Monica. Time well spent, they claim, whatever the weather.

By Dean Seguin - - Descending into Valhalla, the gladed trail draping Jay Peak’s craggy summit, requires navigating a series of steep, narrow chutes walled with stunted trees that stand like banshees. Too tight to traverse, it demands a rapid series of turns, critical and precise, with literally no room for error—for fear of being swallowed alive. From there, enter Jay Peak’s hallowed grounds of choose-your-own-adventure lines through unmanicured woods that spread out like a labyrinth. It’s challenging, to be sure, but also a quintessential experience. One in which many skiers and riders—newbies and shredders alike— want to experience when visiting. Helping them do just that is where Dean Zorn’s job comes into play. The dyed-in-the-wool Vermonter, hard to miss with his grizzled facial hair, is a 16-year veteran of the Jay Peak Ski & Ride School, where he supervises a staff of over 100 instructors. It’s a position he found himself in by chance after dropping off his daughter for a lesson. He got a job that winter and has returned to Jay Peak every year since. “I like being outdoors and sharing what I do with others,” Dean says.

Snakes. Enough said. – Ana Deskins, Hotel Housekeeping Manager
While he enjoys taking advanced students into some of Jay Peak’s legendary expert terrain, some of his favorite lessons are at the novice levels. “That’s how the sport grows,” he says. “If they don’t love the first lesson, there won’t be a second.” Dean’s teaching style transcends the universal food analogies— French fry (start) and pizza (stop)—and, instead, focuses on the mountain experience. Becoming a Jay Peak skier, he says, is all about mastering the ferocious terrain instead of the perfect turn. “Most people define their goals as experiences rather than techniques,” he says. “They want to ski the trees or the bumps or feel comfortable in the terrain park. Even at the beginner level, they want to ride the lift and ski on a trail. Very few people ask for instruction of specific skills.” Back in the day, learning to ski was for the fearless. You pointed downhill and hoped you’d listened when the instructor explained how to stop. Today, Dean and his staff teach skiers and riders using terrain-based learning, a teaching style that uses natural and sculpted zones to control speed, reduce fears and makes the process much more fun. With less time learning to stop and more time learning to go, the results have been impressive. Progress happens rapidly, from strapping in for the first time to conquering the toughest trails. Little giants as young as three years—barely visible inside their oversized jackets and boots—steer over the slopes. Adult novices—more apprehensive about the humiliation, and potential for injury, from falling—transition efficiently and safely through the steepest part of the learning curve. “It’s all about an enjoyable experience,” Dean says. “If they have a good time they will want to come back for more. If you can tap into their passions, whether they already exist or they are just discovering them, you have succeeded.”

“I WANT ANYONE WHO COMES TO JAY PEAK TO BE ABLE TO SLIDE DOWN THE SNOW.”
By JJ Toland - - They say the more you gravitate toward fear, the more vibrant your life will be. But Elsa Schafer would phrase it differently. The more you ski toward fear, the more vibrant your life becomes. The New Jersey native made Jay Peak her winter home 25 years ago. She came for the snow and the beauty. But more importantly she came with a mission: to find a way to share said snow and beauty with those with disabilities. “I want anyone who comes to Jay Peak to be able to slide down the snow,” says Elsa. “And for someone with special needs, one of the biggest obstacles to that is fear.” Fear and, until recently at Jay Peak, a lack of an adaptive program. That changed last fall. Elsa was spending summers working in an adaptive program at another mountain. It’s a community of people she holds close to her soul as she’s spent her career working in schools with children with disabilities. “The happiness you see come across someone’s face who’s never been able to slide down snow before is indescribable,” says Elsa, who has worked in the Jay Peak Ski School for years. When she started talking about wanting to bring her passion to Jay Peak, the resort rallied around her and helped get an adaptive program up and running, where she now works full time. Today, the
Jay Peak Adaptive Program includes a snow slider and a bi-ski, as well as eight dedicated instructors. They saw 50 clients with a range of disabilities last season, and Elsa plans on doubling that number this season. To that end, she’ll be visiting every school in the Northeast Kingdom this fall to let them know about Jay Peak’s nascent program. “There is a huge special-needs population in the Kingdom and a lot of visitors who come to Jay with a family member who has a disability,” says Elsa. “Before we can even begin addressing any fear they might have about getting on snow, we have to let them know we’re here.” The Meltons are one family who found Elsa and her gang last season. The multi-generational clan makes the trek from Long Island to their condo at Jay Peak every winter. During their visits, parents, cousins, kids, aunts, uncles, grammys, and pop-pops head out on the hill to ski and ride. But nine-year-old Charlotte wasn’t always able to “hit the hill.” Until last winter when Charlotte, under Elsa’s watch, made the first ski turns of her life. “It’s amazing how quickly elation chases out fear when you show someone who has never been able to slide down snow, how to do it,” says Elsa. “No matter what I’ve given, I’ve received 200 percent in a return of happiness and joy.”

Child beauty pageants. Or, really, the parents desperately living vicariously through their children. – Ryan Devane, Day Group Sales Rep
By Alex Kaufman - - -
The Ski The East Freeride Tour (STEFT) has been culminating at Jay Peak Resort since its inception nearly a decade prior. One of the longest-running big-mountain ski-offs in existence, the Jay Peak event is the only two-day challenge on the tour’s calendar, earning it the moniker of Super Finals.
All the feels: when you get your bib. When you’re next to go. When you get barraged with high fives at the finish, regardless of performance. Those feels.
The final leg of this multi-mountain tour both crowns and punishes the best and most willing skiers that loose granular can produce and pits them against the most daunting venue the East Coast has to offer: the Face Chutes. The event, as a whole, is wildly unpredictable, yet you can count on STEFT being consistent year to year.
The conditions: 80 degrees and melting fast. Twenty degrees after three feet of fresh. Wind. Rain. Bluebird. Dragons. Gremlins. Whatever. Deal with it.
The name: hasn’t changed.
The OMG kid: because of course there will be some eight-year-old Raised Jay grom that schools the field and scores high. New one every time. Definitely no fear of monster heights.
The competitors: many do it every year. The vibe: a combination of duct tape, technical and spring break. The time of year: end of March, when we can theoretically count on the Face Chutes being skiable for the willing competitors.
But that’s about it. Everything else is TBD.
The winner: it’s anyone’s guess.
The lessons: a couple days with hucksters, young and old, from all over the East Coast and Canada and you’ll indubitably learn a thing or 10.

TA M I N G T H E C R I T I C S
By Stephanie Nitsch - - Over the last four years, a cunning duo known simply as “Maeve and Keaton” have terrorized Jay Peak Resort with each issue of this magazine. Responsible for critiquing the resort’s laundry list of activities and amenities, they’ve taken the common usage of public places and twisted them into their own imaginary realms, taming whatever eating, skating or shredding challenge comes their way. Or letting the eating, skating and shredding tame them. But, alas, it’s time to say goodbye to our not-so-pint-sized pundits. (After all, these tweenagers now have more important dragons to slay. Like curating the best selection of Snapchat stickers.) Their rants, raves and reviews promised an honest look at Jay Peak’s pastimes, no doubt; but taken out of context, we couldn’t help noticing that their unscripted sound bites resembled the kind of sage advice we strive to live by. So, we sifted through their best one-liners as an homage to the girls who have stood up to the test of adult(ish)hood and served us with a healthy reminder that there’s always a brighter, glitterier, more bacon scented-y way of living life.

S L A YI N G R E G N U H E TH DRAGON By Vince Shuley and Stephanie Nitsch - - The state of hunger-induced anger (aka, “hanger”) is the bane of skiers and snowboarders. Skipping breakfast to make first chair, postponing lunch for a couple more powder laps... It can all come to a crashing halt when the human body succumbs to the ravenous beast from within our bellies. Whether you’re in pursuit of a white tablecloth under a breadbasket or a pint and a big screen, there’s every opportunity to slay the hanger—on the hill, off the hill and around the hill—before it slays you.

SKI
By Alex Kaufman - - There’s Raised Jay, and then there’s working on a local dairy farm by summer and bumping chairs in winter in order to get a season pass and shred freaky amounts of powder. Perhaps that’s Raised Rugged.
During that same year, the lift maintenance crew was embarking on a monster-sized project of their own: building a bridge on the golf course. And because it’s a bridge, it took a bit longer than expected. This put them in somewhat of a bind. They needed an extra hand to finish off all the lift work for the summer. Enter Chris.
Meet Chris Martin. The bearded one. Stance: regular. When dispatch needs to reach him on the radio, they say something like, “Base to 502.” Then you hear, “502 copy,” then, maybe, “Jet base is calling for a mechanic,” then finished with a “Copy that, four minutes.” (Side note: stop eavesdropping on hypothetical staff radio traffic.) Ten years ago, Chris was helping to build the Jay Peak Golf Club, picking rocks, cutting trees, digging irrigation. You know, the wet and wicked stuff with savage bug bites and the highest likelihood of spotting Bigfoot.
“Can you handle heights? Are you mechanically inclined?” Buddy Loux’s entrance exam wasn’t complex. Fast forward and Chris is still conquering scary heights and making things turn. Including himself. Understatement of century: working on lift towers can be not warm. “The beard helps. Stay moving. Try micro gloves inside of your mittens,” says the man who is told to use his bare hands on metal during the January sky. Excuses are hard to find in this line of work.
31
“If you’re up on a tower and you drop a tool, you owe a round at the bar,” says Chris. But risk of bar tabs aside, Chris continues to log the most days on the hill compared to the other maintenance guys. “I work six days a week, but always ride on the seventh,” he says. “Most can’t stand to be here on their one day off, but it’s why I got into this, and I try to stay true to that.” Give his grandmother credit for that. In his high school days, Grandma Martin worked at Burton, resulting in new boards under the Christmas tree to replace the Ames specials he and his brother would destroy in the backyard. When snow is in off-season mode, Chris can be found disc golfing at Black Falls or Sheady Acres, where his low round is ten under par. He also grows out a man-mane for a good cause, a ritual he started eight years ago. “Women ask me what I do to my hair,” he admits. “All I can say is, ‘Nothing, I wash it.’ But since it seems to be decent stuff, I cut it all off and donate it to Children With Hair Loss every couple years.” But his biggest phantogram so far? (That is, if hanging 80 harrowing feet off the ground from a chunk of metal that rolls 2,400 people per hour up a mountain in bloodcurdling cold temperatures doesn’t qualify.) Chris is heading into fatherhood this winter.
EXCUSES ARE HARD TO FIND IN THIS LINE OF WORK.

TO JAY
By Vince Shuley - - -
“IF IT’S NOT ON SOCIAL MEDIA, IT DIDN’T HAPPEN.” – Someone on social media
This not-so-old adage whimsically reminds us that half the fun of doing stuff these days means sharing it with other people. The moment is no longer enough. We need to validate it with a digital facsimile, a broadcast to friends and followers that in fact yes, we are getting after it. Yet the beast of banality is but a choice. At Jay Peak we subscribe to our own Golden Rule: “Just do what you say, then say what you do”—whether that’s the old-school method of telling tall tales over après drinks, hashtagging your life philosophies or simply sharing the Jay Way mantra.
The #WayToJay is more than a hashtag. It’s a digital chronicle of moments long remembered, snippets of stoke that remind us why we keep coming back. From the anticipatory drive along Route 242 to the compulsory post-shred pint and all the inevitable rituals throughout the day, these 1x1 moments are meant for sharing. Which is why we’re pulling the best gems from our own rulebook (and Instagram account) and making 75,000 copies. The more the merrier.
EARN YOUR DIGITAL STRIPES AND TAG YOUR JAY PEAK PHOTOS WITH #WAYTOJAY
Community is what made Jay Peak a beacon in the East, from weekender family ski days to diehard locals riding the hill from bell to bell in single-digit temperatures. The mountain may be different strokes for different folks, but as the lyrics of a cheesy High School Musical once chanted: we’re all in this together.

PHOTOBOOK
Would you rather face your fears of flee from them? Do you shed your base-layers of comfort and accept the possibility that something good—something better, even—exists on the other side of the unknown? Or do you take shelter under a thick winter blanket and burrow deeper into the shadow of the mountain, waiting for just the right conditions to make your move? The answer might not be so black and white or sepia-toned, but at some point or another, you’ll have to confront the idea regardless of how scary it is.

By Dean Seguin - - Here comes another poor soul. A wiry fellow in boardshorts, drink in hand. His pasty skin, which hasn’t seen the light of day in months, is the mark of a deep winter, and the collective look among the scantily clad bodies gathered at Jay Peak’s Pump House Indoor Waterpark. After some playful razzing from his pals, he grabs a board and shimmies into position on the manmade barrel of the FlowRider surf wave.
IT’S NOW OR NEVER.
Wate r d ow n you r fe ars at Jay Pe a k’s adu lt s -on ly, af te r- d ark p o ol p ar t y.
A chorus of hooting and hollering reverberates from the peanut gallery of the Drink, a 50-foot-long mezzanine bar overlooking the ground-floor playground, where adult co-eds with a drink in hand heckle the willing down below. The outcome is irrelevant. Letting loose is what’s important. It used to be that après was a time to keep your ski boots on and drink beer while rehashing the day’s triumphs. At Jay Peak, the concept gets watered down—literally—as the waterpark is transformed into Late Night Splash, an adults-only, after-dark party that takes place once a month in the winter.
42
I am afraid of losing who I am as a person. I don’t ever want to lose my values or morals. – Bethany Hepner, Retail Supervisor
LATE NIGHT SPLASH WHEN: DATES TBD TIME: 9:30 P.M. – MIDNIGHT COST: $10 AGE: 21 OR OLDER “Late Night Splash is an outlet for the 21-plus crowd to relax with friends, meet some new ones and enjoy a kid-free environment in the only indoor waterpark in Vermont,” says Jay Peak Events Manager Luke Sussdorff. “It offers a safe, fun venue to let loose in the mountains of Northern Vermont.”
For event info and tickets, visit jaypeakresort.com/pumphouse
The lights go down, the crowd ramps up and the house tunes turn less kid-friendly. Select rides like the aforementioned FlowRider are open, along with the hot tubs and an activity pool with climbing wall and basketball hoops. Think of it as a big kid playground for an evening of wet, wild fun. Being a Jay skier is one thing. Putting on a show for the raucous crowd during Late Night Splash—where many taboos get checked at the door—is entirely different. Belly up to the bar for a drink, to deliver a bit of liquid courage. The waterpark bartenders are known to make a mean margarita. “Although you won’t see any keg stands, Jell-O shots or D-Day from Animal House riding his motorcycle up the waterpark stairs, you will see a motley crew of young adults trying to have as much fun as humanly possible,” Sussdorff says. Guest DJs, drink specials, promo girls, spontaneous games like three-on-three basketball and prizes for ‘best crowd splash’ or ‘best crash’ perpetuate the party vibes. “When we have a variety of college groups staying over a weekend that Late Night Splash is taking place you can expect one hell of a party,” Sussdorff says. “College is a good time to let loose and dabble in your wild side, and Late Night Splash is a great avenue for just that.” It all makes for a scene that’s part Vegas pool party, part homage to an ‘80s ski flick, and part extracurricular fun. One thing’s for sure: it submerges the tradition of après and deepens the legend of a trip to Jay Peak.

SMOOTHING THE SCALES Me l t i n g h e a r t s a n d f r e e z i n g w a t e r. A l l i n a d a y ’s w o r k .
By Vince Shuley - - Piloting a Zamboni 552 electric ice resurfacer might seem like a fun job from the bleachers, but this inter-hockey game ritual can be its own daily dragon. When hockey tournaments are in full swing at the Ice Haus Arena, the Zamboni driver has just 10 minutes to polish an NHL-sized sheet of ice, all under the watchful eye of hundreds of spectators. “When I first sat in the drivers seat it was very intimidating, because around 80 per cent of your view is blind spots,” says Ice Haus operations manager Cedric Lanphear. “The most difficult part is lining up the Zamboni to exit through the gate on the last pass. You don’t want to have to drive over where you just laid water.” Sullying clean ice in front of a packed arena may be the stuff of nightmares for any Zamboni driver, but after almost a year on the job and more than 1,500 resurfaces, Cedric maintains a clean track record.
48
“There could be three people in the bleachers or 300, I just stay focused on keeping my overlaps consistent, “ he says.
ICE HAUS ARENA STATS & FACTS
Now an experienced pilot at the helm, Cedric takes every opportunity to engage with the crowd; tooting the horn, flashing the lights and waving to kids mesmerized by the mechanical beast. A group of skating teenagers from England visiting the Ice Haus once even awarded Cedric with a standing ovation, one of his proudest moments as Jay Peak’s resident ice man.
