The Sharma Springs gardens surround a six-story bamboo building inspired by the shape of a lotus. The estate spans over an area of 25000 m2, extending from the road to the edge of the river. Pathways and gardens follow the contours of the land. ‘No dig gardens’ have been implemented to build soil on top of the existing clay base. Local available organic matter is reused from the site to improve the soil

Keyhole garden beds, banana, papaya circles and vertical living retaining walls with garden beds on top are all space saving Permaculture design aspects. The whole site is covered with plants and heavily mulched to reduce the negative impact of tropical rainfall and sun exposure on soil fertility. Living fences along the south and north boundaries provide chop and drop nitrogen sources for soil fertility. Bio-mass plants such as lemon grass and vetiver grass have been designed into the garden system to limit the importation of any further soil or mulching materials after the initial build of the garden. worm farm provides vermicastings, liquid fertilizer and beneficial microbes to enhance soil fertility. The hardscape elements on the Sharma Springs landscape have been chosen from local materials found in Bali and Java. The forms follow design cues from the architecture and landform while remaining functional and practical. Garden design by Mark Garrett and Orin Hardy. Renderings by Scott Godfredson

GARDENS PORTFOLIO
Built at Green School this garden is designed specifically for education groups who participate in Green Camp. Children come from around Asia to learn about nature and to spend some time in the dirt. Its multiple levels of raised garden beds made of palfrey (local paras) stone accommodate for children of all ages. The raised gardens also provide an excellent habitat for a variety of veggies that usually have trouble tolerating the existing clay base. To the south there is a passion fruit trellises that provides shade for kids to rest after a good dig in the garden. Most Ibuku Gardens contain a herb spiral, but this garden has an extra special medicine spiral for children to learn about local medicinal plants.

GARDENS PORTFOLIO
Fresh, organic, veggies are now in abundance at Bambu Indah. Guests now have the opportunity to watch their food grow whilst enjoying a meal at the restaurant. For this project we took the existing bio-intensive gardens and transformed them using permaculture principles. Ibuku Gardens also worked with the hotel management develop a system to account for the produce grown at the hotel. Most months the garden provides more direct value from garden yields than it costs to cover its basic operational costs. The Gardeners are given up to 50% of this profit each month. It’s a step in the right direction for the gardeners, for organic food in Bali, and for the Bambu Indah’s ecological values. The key to the success of this project was two fold: the first was educating the garden team in basic permaculture principles, and the second was building a good waste. COMPANY PROFILE

Imagine a school, an organic market garden, and an abundant food forest all spiraling into one fabulous institution . This project focused on taking the Green School garden to the next level. Since its inception Green School has been growing food as part of its mission to be green, but recently it has been facing some challenges. These included: insufficient landscape design and planning, low garden staff moral, and decreased soil fertility. Our goal was to provide Green School with the tools, knowledge and infrastructure needed to become a highly productive landscape that adds value to the school on multiple

levels. To provide an excellent environment for children to learn, to produce more food, and to ensure that the landscape was managed sustainably. To reach these objectives Ibuku Gardens carried out a comprehensive site analysis, created a master planning document for the landscape, held regular educational work parties with the garden team, reformed the garden management system, and instituted new practices based on permaculture and our core values. We also designed and built multiple structures including a new compost center, nursery and chicken house.
