The portfolio is a compilation of my academic and professional experience. This portfolio is a lens to look at the evolution I have undergone over these five years. It illustrates my growth as an architect, a designer and overall as a person. Each project deals with different issues and an innovative stance to approach them. In each project the understanding of the process is more important to reach the resulting outcome. The work attempts to raise a vast range of questions regarding the relationship between the built and unbuilt, context and architecture, material and technology etc. I am an active listener, foodie and a traveler with good

01 T H E F A C T O R Y C I T I Z E N

P A RT I C I P A T I O N

Location: Mumbai, Mahahrashtra Guide: Rohan Shivkumar Year: 2017- 2018 This thesis looks at different practices involved with participatory designing, analyses the advantages, difficulties and practical implications of taking the user as a partner in the design process and tries to re-imagine the system of community participation in design. The thesis is based in Daarukhana, a group of three wharfs in the Eastern Waterfront of Mumbai. That area constitutes of numerous ship breaking yards and metal processing enterprises. The area deals with other materials like: wood, bamboo, terracotta tiles, gun powder etc. The group of people staying in Daarukhana are migrants from different states of India, who came here to work at the ship breaking yards. Based on the site study and the case studies a new method is developed for citizen participation and is applied on site to get a response from them. The thesis provides a platform onto which a broad community alliance can come together. These alliances can then help us tackle discourses on site. The thesis focuses on developing a method that gives a very site specific outcome. This project “The Factory� demonstrates how different user groups can come together as partners to re-imagine the system of community participation and construction by building a structure that builds itself over time. The architect being one of the active participant, designs the primary structure, circulation and services for the project. A factory (group of workshops) is added to the structure where people can produce their own flooring system, wall panels, fenestrations and roofing systems designed by the architect with the participation of people from the community. The project takes the user group as its context and will build itself based on their needs and requirements. When redevelopment happens in future and the context changes, the surrounding area can be designed responding to this structure. Hence the redeveloped area can anchor itself to the site. The project states how engineering is an integrated part of architecture and how infrastructure can be designed . The architecture of the project allows the flexibility to the user to create, remove or change spaces inside the larger framework. Even if the user group changes over time, the architecture can remain and adapt to the needs of the context.

The ship repair yard is an informal setup and gets repair material from the ship breaking yard The houses near the water’s edge is built on wooden posts.

Workshops are of larger scale that can hold big machineries and goods

Material used to build these houses are locally available tin sheets and plastic sheets with waste wood pieces and brick.

The building is kit of parts that are designed with the help of the people from the community. The people from the community can use these parts later to design their space and build the rest of the structures. The fenestrations are carefully detailed using their day to day materials.

The whole structure is suspended from the primary truss. Why do we use steel in compression during construction. Steel is good in tension, hence it gives thinner cross sections. It also saves a lot of material. There are primary I Sections establishing the grid which are suspended from the top using four cables acting as one column.

The rear half of the structure has a huge factory that helps the people to produce the other half of the building. The factory is sunk into the ground. The sunk part holds the loading/unloading and the storage areas. A huge light and ventilation shaft acts as the buffer between the factory and other public functions.

A part of loading/unloading can also happen at the ground floor level. Till one floor above the ground the steel and and concrete is used to build a column beam structure. Above that, few floors of the factory are suspended for installation of light machines and bamboo work.

And the building will keep adapting according to how people design it. The ground floor of the building doesn’t follow the grid above and allows a free flowing movement through the spaces. The ground floor consists of a series of staircases and ramps that are connected through large gathering spaces.

02 R E - D E S I G N I N G WATSON’S HOTEL INTO A HYBRID INSTITUTION Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra Guide: Samira Rathod Year: 2017 The project was named ‘Lost and Found’. The idea of the studio was to study the existing Watson’s building and it’s precinct and make master plan inferences. The building on site was then studied to create an inventory of parts of the building that can be re-used in the new structure. Watson’s Hotel is the first cast iron building in Mumbai and was built as a lavish hotel for the rich Indians in the city. As years passed by the building kept on adapting to new programs to survive till the 21st Century. But now we have reached a point in time where we don’t know for how long can that historic structure be protected. If that building has to undergo redevelopment, then what are the possible ways of designing the new structure, what are the programs that can be introduced to the new building to revive the importance of the building. The existing Watson’s Hotel holds a special place in the memory of the people of Mumbai. How much of that memory can we retain after we design something new on site. The project looks at different formal approach using wax models. As wax is a very flexible material to work with, all the master plan models are made using wax. After the 16

initial site study, the programs were developed from the inferences. A program list and area statement was generated for the project. The next step was to come up with a form just based on the master plan inferences and see how the new building responds to site. Numerous iterations were made before reaching a final form. Then the programs were inserted into the building, designing each space internally and challenging the current idea of spaces for those programs. This process ensured that we don’t designing using the norms of ‘Form follows Function’. The major programs for the building was an Art Gallery, Court Rooms and Advocates Offices, a Law Institute. The challenge was to see how can these three programs co-exist in such a tight site. The orientation of the building introduced new public and semi public spaces on site

The settlement on the North East end of Watson’s Hotel is a mixed use area. It has hybrid functions like: Artist’s Studio and offices, Restaurants, Bars, Residential blocks and other commercial stores. e.g. Chumbak. The Army Navy Building beside Watson’s has been converted to Westside mall in the ground and the first floor. Above that there are offices of TATA in that building. 03 IN SEARCH OF ORDER A NAKED EYE ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY Location: Rann of Kutchh, Gujarat Guide: Vandana Ranjit Singh Year: 2015- 2016 Rann of Kutchh, long stretches of sand and land without trees. No place to take cover and protect yourself from the scorching heat of the sun. There are organisms who still survive in such harsh climate. Mostly they live under ground and have the capability to retain water in their body. What do you do in a place like Rann of Kutch, where there is no man made construction, no artificial context and scorching sun over your head. Any organism will try to dig into the earth and hide itself from the heat. The building attempts to do something similar. It looks like an organism trying to dig into the soil to save itself with few of its body parts sticking out of the ground. The intervention merges the landscape elements with functions like naked eye optical observatory. There are no set of rules or parameters to construct a structure in a desert, other than climate. So using all the possible clues on site along with few set of rules the building aligns itself to the functions. The building creates its own order using the grid, which is imagined as a grid that was always present under the layers of soil. 22

STUDENT’S

AMENITY

CENTER

Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra Guide: Sonal Sancheti Year: 2015 The site of the project is Bhavan’s School Campus, Andheri, Mumbai. The site has a rich interaction between architecture and nature. The campus has a central lake around which the whole ecosystem of architecture, nature and people is constructed. The project started with the study of buildings inside the campus and the history of the campus. The programs of the Student’s amenity center were listed down along with their area statements. The project looks at not disturbing the current balance in the ecosystem and tries to re-imagine the idea of a non- building in the campus. The intervention works as an integrator for the whole campus and tries to shift the main entrance of the campus to the rear end. The building is 3m underground and the roof plays a very integral role in showing the presence of the structure. In plan the structure looks like an undulating crack on the ground. The ground planes were shifted to create new public gathering spaces. The student’s amenity center works on a three courtyard system. First courtyard is surrounded by informal functions. The second courtyard is surrounded by formal functions like the welcome center, admission center etc. The third courtyard is used for receiving the public from the other side of the campus. A vehicular road goes over the building, dividing the formal and informal courtyards. The courtyards are used as a general meeting space for students, staff etc. One of the courtyards open up to the lake, giving the users a peaceful edge to sit and relax. The building is not constructed with the programs of the Amenity center, rather it is constructed using the open public spaces at different level with different levels of interaction with the campus.

Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra Guide: Sonal Sancheti Year: 2015-2016 The working drawing portfolio of the Student’s Amnity Center at Bhavan’s Campus focused on exploring different materials and techniques of construction. The materials that can be used to build underground. Materials that are locally available and resolving the services for the same. The exercise zoomed into smaller intricate details and resolved ventilation requirements in the structure. The aim of the portfolio was to understand, how to convert ideas and designs into reality. The main challenge in this exercise was to resolve the tessellated roof so that it can be easily constructed on site.

Location: Allahabad Guide: Rohan Shivkumar Year: 2014- 2015 The project is located in one of the busiest market streets of Allahabad. The program decided for this particular site was a ‘Museum of Languages’. The intervention deals with the idea of a museum in a busy market space. The major question was that the building is located at a very important node in the city and how architecture can create a pause point in such a busy street. The structure provides an open plaza at the terrace level, which lifts people away from the chaos of the market. From there, people can step away from the busy street and look at the scenario peacefully. The Ghantaghar (clock tower) is present in front of the site, an old colonial structure. The site used to have the old city bus stand which was later replaced by a Municipal market building. The intervention doesn’t overpower the colonial clock tower and it lies low on the ground. The outer facade of the building doesn’t have any fenestration, trying to stand like a fort and cuts off the market chaos completely. An open to sky courtyard punctures through the structure for light and ventilation. The two main functions, the library and the museum are situated on either sides of the courtyard. The structure lets the market dwellers to use its walls as a backdrop to set up their shops. One floor of the museum and the library is situated below the ground level, encapsulating the program away from the market.

Location: Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh Guide: Rohan Shivkumar, Shirish Joshi Year: 2014- 2015 Documentations of buildings and settlements play a seminal role in architecture education. Not only does it teach the student the physiology of the building, but it also prompts them to ask critical questions on the contemporary nature of architecture and the built environment. Buildings and spaces of Allahabad are ornate. Not merely with decorations and embellishments but also with their expressions of materials and history. They are a repository of architectural histrory spanning centuries.

The Allahabad Archive is an on-going project of documenting the rich architectural history of Allahabad by actively. The Tilohi Kothi is a single storey symmetrical structure situated in Daraganj, Allahabad having two courtyards and one verandah. It has many small rooms which are given on rent to the students of Allahabad University. There is a school on the ground floor of the kothi where children from the vicinity come to study. I-sections and T- sections are used for the construction of floors. It is a load-bearing structure with the main material used in its construction being brick.

Location: Mandu, Madhya Pradesh Guide: Rohan Shivkumar, George Jacob Year: 2014 Mandu is a site with very less locals. Mostly its filled with travelers and tourists. The house designed in this project is a home for a traveler. The attempt was to find a ruin and use architecture as plug ins to create more spaces in the house. This house is a complete journey from the outside to the inside and finally how the house takes you out to the nature. The intervention is an extension to the existing structure on site. The existing structure has one room with openings on 3 sides. The extensions consists of spaces like a kitchen, eating area, relaxing and viewing deck, toilet, terrace and an entrance route. Most of the structure is made using bamboo and wood along with concrete and brick. The house is built on a contoured site with road on one edge and never ending fields on the other. From the viewing deck, one can directly see some part of the Roopmati Palace. This house is designed for a voyager, and all the spaces are designed accordingly.

Location: Mumbai, Maharashtra Guide: Shilpa Gore Shah, Shirirsh Joshi Year: 2014 The project is located in Govandi, Mumbai where a huge community covering an area of 1km x 1km stay alongside a huge dump yard. The concept for this project was arrived upon using a mythological character called Arachne. The concept developed for this project was weaving. Govandi has a huge hierarchy of weaving that can be mapped in that region, starting from very small scale i.e. interaction or the weave between family members and neighbours display a form of weaving. To a scale where weaving is interpreted through occupation and people woven together because of that. The attempt of this project was to weave these inter relations present in the community and if possible gather them at one place using this project as an interface between the community and the dump yard. The structure directly pulls people off the street into the building and then release them to the other side i.e. the public ground, which can be used for many occasions. The structure looks at the idea of weaving the whole community/settlement together by gathering them at one place i.e. the ground in front of the dump yard. The structure is made up of ramps that lift the pedestrians directly from the road and takes them into the structure. The building releases people on the other side using two ramps. The building has a library, amphitheater, park and one community gathering space.

Location: Bangalore, Karnataka Year: 2016-2017 The project looks at designing a school, a baby home and a house (for the owner) inside the campus, so that all these functions can co-exist. As an intern my job was to update the drawings of the school and add necessary details to it. In case of the house and baby home, I was involved from the design development to the working drawing stage.

Location: Jiskun, China Guide: Year: 2015 Since the project sits within an underdeveloped region, a proposal has been made using traditional building methods. The site is also seen as a sacred one facing the entire valley. Attempt has been made to minimise the footprint and use maximum area as a landscape to reduce the hard paved surface. Since the space will be used during breaks, it is imagined as a free open space used by kids but also provides the library block some space at the top. A Banyan tree has been provided as a sacred corner to the site, anchoring the entire project. The materials used to construct this structure are local materials available in that locality. Stone, bamboo and wood are few of the locally available material. Stone is used to anchor the two functions i.e. The library and the canteen. The plinth of the structure is built using stone. The windows are covered using bamboo shutters which has operable louvers on them. The louvers allow light and ventilation to flow into the structure. The ground floor of the library uses stilt as a concept taken from the houses in the Buyi Community. The whole structure stands on a bamboo column grid supporting the slab using bamboo beams. The follies were designed to house the different works/ performances by various groups and individuals. It was a public work exhibition show under the KGAF 2018.

It demonstrates this through ten comprehensive design solutions.

Location: Mithchowky, Mumbai, Maharashtra Firm: Bloomberg Philanthropies Year: 2017 The aim of this project was to show the citizens how traffic junctions can be redesigned with safety measures so as to make them user friendly. e.g. reducing the turning radius of the road can reduce the speed of the cars, introducing more traffic islands can help citizens cross the road safely. The exercise took mithchowky as an example and demonstrated the possibilities for a safe traffic junction.
