Welcome to the Orono Community Education Summer Program!
Our program uses a unique combination of talented educators from within the Orono Schools and from neighboring school districts as well as partnerships with several local and national education businesses. The goal is to provide programs that keep students active in both mind and body throughout the summer. We encourage students to spend their summer developing a healthy lifestyle, academic strengths, positive social skills and character. Whether you participate in your favorite activity or learn something new - we hope you HAVE FUN!

Camp Confirmation
To receive confirmation of your class enrollment, MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS! Otherwise, no news is good news! The only time you will hear from us aside from the email confirmation is:
• If there is a change in class time, day or building location
• If the class is cancelled

Camp Descriptions
Bus Transportation is available June 19 - August 17.
Camps that have bus transportation available both to and from are indicated with a dot in the “bus” column on the online Camp Calendars. Routes are limited. See page 5 for bus registration details.
Lunch Bunch is available to students registered for both morning and afternoon camps. Bring a lunch and our staff will supervise students and help them get to their afternoon camp. See page 5 for details.
Health Concerns or Special Needs
Please indicate any special learning, emotional or health needs of your child at the time of registration so our staff can assist your child in having a successful experience in our program. Community Education does not have access to school district records for this information.
Payment Plans
A payment plan of three installments is available to all who register by credit card. One third of the full payment is due at the time of registration, one third is due June 15, and the final payment is due July 15. Call the Community Education Office at 952-449-8350 if you would like to request other payment arrangements.
Refund Policy
If you need to drop a class, please notify us by phone at 952-449-8350 as soon as you know. Up to 3 days prior to the class, a refund minus a $10 cancellation fee will be issued. After that time, no refunds will be issued.
Snacks, Lunches & Food Allergies
Most camps and classes take a snack break, so feel free to send a snack and water bottle with your student. If your child has a full day program or is scheduled to attend both a morning and afternoon program, you will need to send a lunch. (See Lunch Bunch on page 5). Some classes may include projects or activities using food. If your child has a food allergy, please indicate this at the time of registration. Our staff will contact you to confirm if your child needs any accommodations.
Participant Accommodations
Orono Community Education works to help each student be successful in our programs. We will do whatever we can to provide reasonable accommodations for students within the general nature of each activity. Some programs or settings may not be an appropriate match for a student’s needs. If you have concerns about participation or would like to request support for your student, please contact us at 952-449-8350.

Children registered for programs that begin at 9 am may register. Staff will welcome your child on the weeks they need care and provide activities prior to their morning camp. The staff will help your child get to their summer program location.

We have a limited-stop activity bus providing transportation to and from the Orono School’s main campus.
• Bus transportation is available Monday through Thursday, June 19 - August 17. No bus July 3 - 6.
• Available from designated stops to the main campus for programs beginning at 9 am.
• Available from the main campus back to designated stops for programs ending at 12 pm and 4 pm.
• Students who are registered for programs that begin at 1 pm or the Summer Playground Program (Rainbow or Holbrook Park) may ride the bus for free from the main campus.
• DEADLINE TO REGISTER FOR BUS TRANSPORTATION: MAY 22
• Exact bus routes and times will be sent the week of June 12 to those who are registered.

Lunch Bunch
Grades K - 8 | Monday - Thursday | 12 - 1 pm
If your child is registered for both a morning and an afternoon camp, they must be supervised from 12 - 1 pm between camps. Sign up for Lunch Bunch and send a bag lunch. Our staff will supervise students and then help them get to their afternoon activity. Note: This option only works between morning camps that end at 12 pm and afternoon camps that begin at 1 pm on the school’s main campus, otherwise you must make an alternate plan for supervision of your child between camps.

Use LEGO® Technics engineering kits to explore the world of STEM. Explore engineering principles such as gears, wheels, levers and pulleys. Red Cross Lifeguard Training
Earn your lifeguard certification from the American Red Cross. Our lifeguard certification courses are designed to ensure that you are properly trained in the event of a water emergency. • If you are a new family to Orono Community Education’s swimming lessons, we encourage you to schedule a free swimming pre-assessment to determine the best level for your swimmer. Pre-assessments take place at the Orono pool. Instructors will guide your swimmer through a set of skills in a 15-minute period.

Red Cross Swimming Lesson Descriptions
Parent & Child Class 6 months - Age 2
Enjoy swimming with your child while building swimming readiness by emphasizing fun and safety in the water. Parent/adult must accompany child in the water. Children not potty trained should wear swim diapers or plastic diaper covers.
Preschool Level 1 Ages 3 - 5
For inexperienced or cautious swimmers. Focus will be on gaining comfort in the water, floating on front and back, blowing bubbles and submerging. Parent/guardian may accompany child in the water.
Preschool Level 2 Ages 3 - 5
For the swimmer who is comfortable voluntarily submerging. Focus will be on creating greater independence floating and swimming. Parent/guardian may accompany child in the water.
Preschool Level 3 Ages 3 - 5
For the swimmer who is floating, submerging and swimming independently. Work to gain independence and build endurance in all skills. Parent/guardian may accompany child in the water.
Level 1: Introduction of Water Skills Ages 5+

Beginning Golf Camp
Skyhawks golf focuses on building the confidence of young athletes through proper technique and refining the essential skills of the game. This camp will focus on the fundamentals of form, chipping, putting, driving and body positioning. To assist in this training, Skyhawks uses the SNAG (Starting New At Golf) system. Learn to Row Intro Camp
Are you interested in trying the great sport of rowing? This camp is a great introduction to rowing and the basic techniques! Participants should be competent swimmers and be capable of swimming 100 meters. Initial instruction and practice takes place at the dock. As students progress, they move to open water with a safety/coaching launch boat in close proximity and personal flotation devices on board. Dress to get wet! Lake Minnetonka Cruise
Enjoy a day on Lake Minnetonka!
Board the Lady of the Lake, a historic sternwheeler, from the Port of Excelsior. A live narration about Lake Minnetonka from the captain and crew will talk about Big Island and you will see the waterfront mansions, restaurants, marinas and gardens. Lunch will be served on board the Lady of the Lake. The Boaters Box lunch includes: signature gourmet chicken salad on a croissant with lettuce, fresh fruit, pasta salad, dessert and soft drink. Charcuterie 101
Ever wonder where to begin when planning your charcuterie board? What to buy, how to cut, prepare or arrange your items and how to make that cool salami rose? Learn all of the basics in techniques, food pairings and educational background on the foods used. A supply fee of $40 for is payable to the instructor via credit card or Venmo at class. Take home an artfully arranged 10” round charcuterie board that you built yourself that serves 5-6 people to be enjoyed right away. Food and beverages can be purchased separately at the Iron Exchange during class.

Pickleball Intermediate/ Advanced Skills & Drills
If you’ve progressed to the point where you are enjoying the friendly competition of the game, this class is for you. We will focus on one skill set and them implement it into our games. The sessions will open with a warm-up, a description of the “shot of the day” and then a series of drills to practice that shot. Then we will spend time practicing your new improved shot in live play. You’ll be surprised how quickly you improve and how much fun you’ll have while doing it!

Big, Bold, BBQ with Z’s Smokin Bonez!
Get out your grill and get ready to host some great BBQ get-togethers this summer! This class will provide tips and tricks on how to create big, bold barbeque with one of the best local BBQ masters around town, Dave from Z’s Smokin Bonez! Learn how to prep and cook all four different categories of meat including brisket, chicken, ribs and pork. Taste test some of the recipes provided. Cook along with Dave and grill up some delicious chicken in the Z’s Smokin Bonez food truck (located outside of Fork Less). $20 supply fee payable at class. Youth ages 1217 can enroll with a registered adult.

Wedding Dance Rescue!
Your wedding day is nearing and you don’t know how to dance. We can fix that! In this two-hour lesson, you and your fiancé will learn everything you need to know for your first dance. You will be taught easy steps, sways, twirls, dips and even a couple gentle (and optional) lifts! Have you selected your song? If so, you may send it to the teacher in advance. If not, your teacher has recommendations and resources. Class is open to father/ daughter, mother/son, parents of the bride/groom and any other special person dances you plan to include. S’mores Box Workshop
It’s s’mores season! There’s nothing better than roasting marshmallows over the fire on a summer night. During this workshop you’ll paint your box a color of your choosing and then apply your stencil, dry and assemble! This workshop is perfect for adults or children! Youth age 10-17 can enroll with a parent/guardian registration. Included in workshop: 1 wooden box and stencil, 1 pack of graham crackers, 2 Hershey bars, 1 bag of marshmallows (jar not included) and a cloth (red buffalo plaid or black and white - may vary slightly from photo).

Stained Glass Bugs
A friendly bug or creature will be created out of glass nuggets, lead and wire. We will finish one or two free standing projects. All tools are provided. We will be using soldering irons. The Assassination of John F. Kennedy
Succulent Planters
Join Carver Junk Company for our DIY succulent workshop. Get your hands a little dirty while planting a decorative pot to enjoy year round! Succulent type may vary slightly from photo. Youth ages 10-17 can enroll with a registered adult. Please call 952-449-8350 to register ages 10-17.
Kit includes: 1 ceramic pot, 1 bag of dirt to fill pot, 1 large succulent or 2 - 3 small succulents, 1 bag of decorative stones, and 1 wooden plant tag.

Air Painting
Learn the art of capturing the light by painting outdoors. Local artist Kevin Kluever will guide you on how to paint with acrylics in nature. Classes will meet at Veterans Park in Maple Plain to capture the natural surroundings. Please bring a canvas of your choice - any size or type.

This class will examine the discrepancies between the Warren Commission Report (that investigated the assassination for ten months and published their findings in September of 1964) and conclusions reached by the United States House of Representatives (that investigated the assassination for thirty-one months and published their report in March of 1979). Each of the class sessions will have time for participant questions and comments.

WAYS TO REGISTER
Payment Plans
A payment plan of three installments is available to all who register by credit card for most camps and classes. One third of the total payment is due at time of registration, one third is due June 15 and the final payment is due July 15. Call the Community Education Office at 952-449-8350 if you would like to request other payment arrangements.
Financial Assistance
Scholarships are available to qualified families for summer programs. Educational Benefits guidelines and individual circumstances are used to determine eligibility. Download an application from our website: oronoschools.org/ce, and select “Registration Information” under “About Us” or call at 952-449-8350.
Refund Policy
Class locations are subject to change.
If the building changes, we will notify you via email. For room changes within a building, the most up-to-date location will be listed on the course reminder email sent a few days prior to the class.
If you need to drop a class, please notify us at 952-449-8350 as soon as you know. Up to 3 days prior to the class, a refund minus a $10 cancellation fee will be issued. After that time, no refunds will be issued. Partial refunds will be considered if injury or serious illness occurs. Some programs have a more specific refund policy. If Community Education needs to cancel a class, we will contact you and process a full refund.
Tax Deductions for Educational Expenses
Many programs in this brochure may qualify as educational expenses for tax deductions. To print receipts for our programs, log in to your Community Education Eleyo account and then select “Your History” under your account at bottom of screen. You can view your registrations by year and print any receipts you need. For more information contact your personal tax preparer or visit www.revenue.state.mn.us.
