Our Story. It all started in 1933, with a family and a baseball team. Don Felipe Martinez Audelo began developing custom-made leather baseball gloves and belts for his own team: Los Audelos. His sons grew up playing baseball with him. Off the field, they worked together learning the family craft of making traditional leather sandals and accessories. As Felipe grew into old age, his middle son, Don Pepe took on the family business, and with the help of the oldest of Pepe’s 14 children, Jose grew the business. José was eight years old when he began to work in the family business. José grew a natural, ingrained love for leather at that early age. He developed an ability to conceptualize designs in his mind. He applied this skill in the making of footwear, bags and complex murals tooled into leather. As José grew into a young man and started
traveling, he met a group of Japanese businessmen who fell in love with his work. In 1991, José was personally invited to Japan to develop and manufacture his unique designs and products. José accepted the offer and moved away from his young family in Oaxaca, visiting them twice a year. He spent six years in Japan, every day developing leather goods and perfecting his craft. José’s oldest son, Martin moved to Portland to complete his business degree at Portland State University. While studying he met and fell in love with his wife, and wanted to build a life and business in Portland. Heeding the call of tradition and history, and now coupled with knowledge of the business world: Martin decided to revive the roots of leather crafting with his parents José and Jackeline and his father-inlaw John. Conversations between son and father led the master leather maker, José, to return to his initial
craft and he began the development of a new line of leather goods, handmade in Portland. The products, as you see in the Orox store and on the website, bring together contemporary yet classic design elements inspired by this city’s lifestyle combined with the Martinez family heritage.
Who We Are. Orox is a fourth-generation, family-owned company, with roots that began in Oaxaca, Mexico. The name Orox represents the merging our past home – Oaxaca - with our present - Oregon. We design and manufacture beautiful, durable leather goods in our shop in Old Town Portland. Orox’s philosophy has been, and remains, that customers are a part of the Orox family. With this in mind, our focus is on providing all those who purchase our leather goods with the highest quality materials, craftsmanship, and service–we wouldn’t want anything less. Orox aims to create goods that, while stylish, don’t go in and out of style. They are designed to be timeless, cherished heirlooms; enjoyed for generations.
The Orox Family. Who is the Orox Family? They are a lively, kind, and close-knit group, each bring different strengths, skills, and perspectives to the table. It started with Jose, the founder and creative leader at Orox Leather Co. He has been an entrepreneur and designer since the age of eight when he learned and made his first pair of shoes for himself. He worked in Japan for six years as a master leatherworker before eventually working to create Orox with his son Martin in Portland, OR. His wife Jackeline, brings a wide-range of talents and skills to the table. Incomparable sewing ability, cooking that feeds the soul, and an amazing design sense that is invaluable in the creation of Orox’s product line. Jose and Jackie’s three children manage different parts of the company. Martin, Jose’s oldest son, is in charge of the image of the company and focuses on developing relationships to grow the business. Levi concerns himself with the quality and experience of all Orox products, managing production and sales. Kevin, the youngest of the three brothers, is highly creative, careful, and somewhat of a perfectionist, he has been integral to the quality of all Orox products. He’s built many of the displays in the store using his welding skills, and designed and created his own tools (that he lets us use, too!). This incredible family is also blessed with the involvement of CEO John Carey, who has 35 years of corporate experience in sales, marketing, finance, and program development – mostly spent with Hewlett Packard. We all work together through thick and thin to keep Orox growing. Throw into the mix some long-time team members that bring even more joy, connection, and creativity to the team, and you’ve got it- Orox Leather Company. More than just a brand, it’s a family of people making leather goods to last you a lifetime.
