How to Get Kids Excited for Music Lessons

Many adults regret not taking guitar lessons or piano lessons as children. Finding the time for music classes while balancing family, work and other obligations seems nearly impossible. But children don’t always appreciate the value in learning a special skill like playing guitar, so it can be difficult to get them excited about lessons. Here are several ways to help your son or daughter get excited about taking music classes this year. Help Find the Right Instrument(s) The right instrument is key for any student. If a child is not particularly fond of the trumpet, then forcing them down that route can make music lessons boring. If they are interested in music but don’t know where to begin, have them try out with several different types of instruments. This will help both you and the instructor to determine where the child’s interest lies and what classes they need to take. Do they need one-on-one guitar lessons or should they join group violin lessons? Learning early on can get a student on the right track. Offer Encouragement and Motivation Being there for your child and supporting them through the learning process will help motivate them to continue taking music lessons. Learning an instrument is not an easy task, as some students come to discover quickly, and many will have the urge to quit. Motivation and encouragement can be exactly what your child needs to become truly engaged in guitar classes or vocal lessons. If a child sees their parent as a fan and someone who sees their own talents and strengths, the positive reinforcement can push them to go further in their musical education. Show Them What Music Can Do Sometimes just saying why music is important falls on deaf ears, especially with children. Showing them, however, can change their mindsets entirely. Take them to a concert and let them experience the impact of music on the crowd. Exposing them to different kinds of music will enrich their understanding of both music and culture, allowing them to hear the unique

melodies and sounds that music can produce while seeing the profound impact music can have on its listeners. It is not impossible for kids to get excited about music lessons, but it can certainly take some effort to get them going. Austin offers a wide variety of live music for people of all ages.
