Program Notes December 2012 THE SLEIGH (A LA RUSSE)

by Richard Kountz, arranged by Ralph L. Baldwin Get ready for a sleigh ride! This is not a gentle jingle-bell trot through the pines, but a full-out gallop through the snowy woods. Hold on! O MAGNUM MYSTERIUM

by Morton Lauridsen This ancient text, expressing wonder that the lowly animals would be so blessed as to see the infant Jesus and the Virgin Mary, has inspired many composers. Morten Lauridsen, named an “American Choral Master” by the National Endowment for the Arts, was Distinguished Professor of Composition at the Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California. Like much of his music, “O Magnum Mysterium” is quiet, meditative and reflective of a great spiritual mystery. His choral works are recorded on more than 150 CDs. A native of the Pacific Northwest, he has also been a Forest Service firefighter. ZUM GALI GALI

Hebrew Traditional This Hebrew song, our tribute to Hannukah, is part folk song, part work song, part patriotic anthem, part children’s camp music. It speaks of pioneers working together for the common good. HABANERA

(from Carmen) by Georges Bizet “Carmen” is Bizet’s most famous opera, and the “Habanera,” in the style of a Cuban folk dance, is a perennial favorite. A saucy and seductive Carmen sings of love as rebellious bird, free, soaring and dangerous MELE KALIKIMAKA

by R. Alex Anderson, arranged by Jay Althouse The year was 1949, times were flush and Bing Crosby crooned. Hawaiian-born Robert Alex Anderson, who flew combat missions in Europe during World War II and became a successful businessman after the war, had no formal musical training. But he wrote more than a 100 songs, many of them about Hawaii, including “Lovely Hula Hands.” 12

Crosby and the Andrews sisters made “Mele Kalikamaka” famous in 1950. COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS

by Irving Berlin, arranged by Charles Boutelle Irving Berlin wrote this song for the 1954 movie, “White Christmas,” and the song was nominated for an Academy Award (losing to “Three Coins in a Fountain.” This is one of those deceptively “simple” songs where seemingly light lyrics and a gentle tune carry a profound message. THE RED SUSPENDERS

by Richard Lane Our dear friend, the late Richard Lane, was the pianist for the Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus for 42 years, and wrote many compositions for us. Some are profound, some light; and all are brilliant examples of his talent. “The Red Suspenders” tells the story of fireman Ben, a concert, a choir director with a dress code and a heroic event. WHITE CHRISTMAS

by Irving Berlin A legend says that Irving Berlin, who enjoyed the festivities of Christmas, got the idea for “White Christmas” while in California working on a movie during the Christmas season and longing for his family back east. The song was first broadcast on the radio in December, 1941, on Bing Crosby’s radio show. Crosby sang it a few months later in the movie, “Holiday Inn,” winning the Academy Award for best movie music. The next Christmas, when millions were away from home due to the war, the song reached deeply into the hearts of Americans around the world. The 1954 “White Christmas” movie with Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen is considered one of the greatest movie musicals of all time. HALLELUJAH

by Leonard Cohen, arranged by Roger Emerson Canadian-born Leonard Cohen is a poet and novelist and songwriter who has won many awards for his work, and has performed around the world for many years without becoming a familiar superstar. His music often deals with love, sex, religion and social justice. Cohen wrote “Hallelujah” in 1984, and the song has been through many arrangements and styles. A recent version was sung in the movie “Shrek.” 13

MARY HAD A BABY

by William C. Dawson The title of the song is a simple statement. The expansive musical setting of this traditional spiritual brings forth the spiritual substance of the declaration “Mary had a baby,” and elevates it to reflect the glory of the Christmas gospel. BWANA AWABARIKI

Swahili Folk hymn arranged by Eugene Butler “Faith” is one of the foundations of the Kwanza holiday, lifting up the spiritual and cultural heritage of Africa. When Christianity came to Africa, the people there quickly brought their traditional music into the church, putting lively, rhythmic hymns such as this one, which the Orpheus clubs sings in both Ki-Swahili and English, alongside the European music taught by the missionaries. THE PASTURE

(from a poem by Robert Frost), music by Randall Thompson Robert Frost’s poem, though brief, is astonishingly deep, as a farmer ponders some chores. The undertone is the farmer’s connection with the natural world, the leaves in the spring and a new-born calf. It is his world, he understands it, moves easily in his world; and says to the reader: “You come, too.” Randall Thompson, one of America’s foremost choral composers, set this poem and some others by Frost to music in 1959 as part of the Bicentennial of the town of Amherst, Massachusetts. RING OUT, WILD BELLS

words by Alfred Lord Tennyson, music by Percy E. Fletcher Tennyson (1809-1892) had just been named poet laureate of England in 1850 when he wrote “In Memoriam,” the poem from which “Ring Out, Wild Bells!” is taken. For Tennyson, the bells of the Christmas/New Year holiday were more than celebratory noise. They were to ring out all that diminishes and demeans humanity and ring in the “nobler modes of life” The musical setting by Percy E. Fletcher evokes the sound of church bells “ringing the changes,” pealing bell chords and carillon harmonies from the belfries of churches out across the land.

Program notes written by Charles Austin 14

Meyer Orpheus Club Scholarship To keep “the song alive” the members of the Orpheus Club are committed to support future generations of musicians in their endeavors. To that end, for more than a decade the Orpheus Club has been proud to sponsor a scholarship program designed to honor and assist a graduating high school senior who has demonstrated extraordinary accomplishments in music and who intends to continue musical studies on the collegiate level. O Holy Night

Deck the Hall Deck the hall with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la la la la la. 'Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la la la la la. Don we now our gay apparel, Fa la la la la la la la la. Troll the ancient Yuletide carol, Fa la la la la la la la la.

Rock of Ages Rock of ages, let our song raise thy saving power Thou amidst the raging foes, wast our sheltering tower. Furious they assailed us, but thine arm availed us And thy word broke their sword, when our own strength failed us. And thy word broke their sword, when our own strength failed us.

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining; It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn! Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices! O night divine! O night when Christ was born! O night divine! O night, O night divine!

Auld Lang Syne Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And days of auld lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We’ll raise a cup o’ kindness yet, For auld lang syne.
