MiCHele Capalbo The New York Times describes Michele Capalbo as having "a genuine voice, from a lower register she actually uses to high floating pianissimos". A widely renowned interpreter of Verdi and Puccini her dramatic talents and tremendous skill in the bel canto and verismo traditions have earned this remarkable soprano worldwide praise including the Opera News who proclaimed her "a world-class Aida" and "A statuesque beauty with strong stage presence", someone who "may well be the verismo soprano we've been waiting for." Michele's international credits include Verdi's Aida with the San Francisco Opera, Teatro Municipal Santiago, Théátre du Capitole de Toulouse and the Canadian Opera Company. Garnering rave reviews for Elisabetta (Don Carlo), Otello's Desdemona, and Amelia (Un ballo in maschera), Michele also earned acclaim as Lady Macbeth (Macbeth), a role she brought to life with Opera Ireland and L'Opéra de Montréal. She has appeared as Leonora with Teatro Real Madrid and Teatro Municipal Santiago in Il trovatore; as well as singing La forza del destino's Leonora in Busseto, Verdi's birthplace. In the verismo repertoire, Michele's credits include the title roles of Tosca with New York City and Seattle Operas, Cio-Cio -San (Madama Butterfly) with Houston Grand Opera; as well as Manon Lescaut with Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Teatro Regio di Parma. No stranger to the symphonic stage, Michele's recent worldwide concerts have included Verdi's Requiem with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra; Mahler's 8th Symphony in Bergen, Norway; Poulenc's Stabat Mater in Florence, Italy; and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Her debut recording, Christmastide, draws on the singers' fondest childhood memories inspired by the relationship of Mother and Child. The 13-track disc features Verdi's rarely heard Ave Maria for soprano and strings, sacred songs, lullabies and new arrangements of classic carols. It is available on iTunes.

home FoR the holidays
by Robert Allen, lyrics by Richard Stillman When released in 1954, “Home for the Holidays” became an instant hit for crooner Perry Como, who recorded it again in 1959. Songwriter Robert Allen had written several songs for Como, including “To Know You is to Love You.” He was also responsible for “Chances Are,” and “It’s Not for Me To Say,” both Johnny Mathis hits in 1957; and several tunes for the Four Lads, including “Moments to Remember” (1955). Lyricist Richard Stillman was also his colleague on those tunes, and wrote words to other pop hits including “I Believe” (1952). Wassail sonG
Traditional, arranged by R. Vaughan Williams and Herbert W. Pierce An English holiday tradition is to go house to house singing and drinking great quantities of “wassail” – spiced wine or ale. Revelers of all classes call loudly for “Wassail!” even at houses above their station in life; hoping that a kind maid will unlock the door for them and warning butlers not to serve them just the “cheap stuff.” Our “Wassail Song” echoes this house to house holiday revelry. JeRusalem, JeRusalem
by Naomi Shemer “Jerusalem of Gold” was written in 1967 by Naomi Shemer (19312004) for an Israeli Music festival just weeks before the Six-day War. As the year went on, the song became a symbol of the desire for peace, a recollection of the religious history of Jerusalem, and a declaration of love for the city and its land. It has been translated into many languages. Shemer, a native of Kinneret, a kibbutz overlooking the Jordan, won many honors for her music based on the themes of her homeland. Many will remember this melody from the closing scenes of Stephen Spielberg’s Oscar-winning film, “Schindler’s List.” bReaK FoRth, o beauteous, heav’nly liGht
from Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by A.T.D. Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio” was written in 1734 and is one of the 12
few great composer’s scores which has come down to us intact. “Break forth O Beauteous, Heav’nly Light” was to be sung on the second day of Christmas, the day when the Gospel text is St. Luke 2:8-14; about the angel choir opening the heavens to announce the birth of Jesus to the shepherds. the chRistmas sonG
by Mel Torme A legend connected with this Christmas favorite says that Torme wrote it in 1944 in an exceedingly hot summer, hoping to stay cool by thinking winter thoughts. The song was first recorded by Nat King Cole in 1946 with the accompaniment of a few stringed instruments. Cole recorded it again in 1953 with a full orchestra directed by Nelson Riddle. Dozens of artists have recorded Torme’s hit, but it is such a warm, friendly piece that there is nothing like hearing it in a live performance. encoRe: thiRty second Fa la la
by Donald Moore O.K., so what was wrong with the first 31 Fa La La’s? Donald Moore, who has composed many well-known choral pieces, wrote this Christmas bagatelle which can be sung in 30 seconds. But don’t time us. The Orpheus Club interpretation of this piece might take a few seconds more. And you will like it better. God Rest ye meRRie, Gentlemen
traditional, arranged by Sumner Salter This Christmas carol first appeared in 1833 and its original author is unknown. It has appeared in Christmas carol songbooks ever since that time, It is referenced in “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens as the song that annoyed the as yet unenlightened Ebenezer Scrooge. There are many verses, all explaining why “gentlemen” should be kept (an older meaning of “rest”) merry because of the savior’s birth. in my liFe
by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, arranged by Dennis Steele This Beatles hit came out in 1965 and is on almost everyone’s list of favorite songs from the Fab Four. Lennon didn’t like his original lyrics, a reflection of places in his home town, so the song was re-written before the Beatles put it on their “Rubber Soul” album. This arrangement is by the Orpheus Club’s own Dennis Steele. 13
sinG unto the loRd
by Richard Lane We always honor our beloved pianist, composer and friend, the late Richard Lane, who was with the Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus for 42 years, and wrote much beautiful music for us to sing. “Sing Unto The Lord” is the first piece Richard composed for the club, and was written in 1964. The words are adapted from Psalm 96, and Richard has given us a lovely, joyful piece quite appropriate for the holiday season. la veRGine deGli anGeli
by Guiseppe Verdi (from the opera La Forza del Destino) This Verdi heroine, Leonora, is fleeing her father who is opposed to her love for Don Alvaro. Disguised as a man, she seeks refuge as a religious hermit and the monks of a monastery join her in singing this plea that the Virgin of the Angels will protect her. maRy sat a-RocKin’
by Greg Gilpin Greg Gilpin has written or arranged hundreds of pieces of choral music, and is a well-known music educator who is director of Educational Choral Publications for Shawnee Press. We like this rhythmic, jazzy Christmas piece about Mary rocking her baby – gently, but with a funky beat. dinG! donG! meRRily on hiGh
traditional French Carol arranged by Howard Helvey The tune originated as secular dance music in the 16th Century, and the Christmas words came from George Radcliffe Woodward (18481934). It was first published in 1924. “Sungen” and “swungen” are not words created for the sake of rhyme, but archaic English verb forms. “I-O I-O,” sung as “ee-oh ee-oh” is a Latin word for “joy.” Program notes written by Charles Austin

FRühlinG (Spring) In dusky vaults I have long dreamt of your trees and blue skies, of your scents and the songs of birds. Now you lie revealed in glistening splendor, flushed with light, like a wonder before me. You know me again, you beckon tenderly to me; all of my limbs quiver from your blissful presence! beim schlaFenGehen (While falling asleep) Now that the day has made me so tired, my dearest longings shall be accepted kindly by the starry night like a weary child. Hands, cease your activity, head, forget all of your thoughts; all my senses now will sink into slumber. orpheus Club Scholarship program Roland L. Meyer Orpheus Club Scholarship
To keep “the song alive” the members of the Orpheus Club are committed to support future generations of musicians in their endeavors. To that end, for more than two decades the Orpheus Club has been proud to sponsor a scholarship program designed to honor and assist a graduating high school senior who has demonstrated extraordinary accomplishments in music and who intends to continue musical studies on the collegiate level. Since taking it current form in 1993, the program has made grants totaling $19,000.00. Students from Ridgewood, Indian Hills, Paramus, Pequannock, Glen Rock, Ramapo, Northern Valley (Old Tappan), Eastern Christian, Northern Highlands, Fair Lawn, Verona, Roxbury, Montclair, Leonia and Lakeland high schools have been past recipients of Orpheus Club awards. These outstanding young musicians have gone on to study at Oberlin College, the University of Miami, the University of North Carolina, the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Boston University, the Mannes College of Music, Miami University (Ohio), Rutgers University, Calvin College (Michigan), the Manhattan School of Music, Boston College, the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, Hamilton College (New York) and Brandeis University. At our concert this past April, we awarded the 2013 Roland L. Meyer Orpheus Club Scholarship grant of $2000.00 to Yuta Takano from the Bergen County Academies, Hackensack. He is now attending the Cleveland Institute of Music majoring in cello performance. We hope to be able to honor other outstanding musicians in coming years. Applications for our 2014 award will soon be mailed out to area schools and will also be available on our web site. If you know of a promising high school senior who might be eligible, encourage them to apply We thank all those individuals and groups who have made donations to this valuable effort and encourage you to continue your support of our students in the arts. O Holy Night
Deck the Hall Deck the hall with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la la la la la. 'Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la la la la la. Don we now our gay apparel, Fa la la la la la la la la. Troll the ancient Yuletide carol, Fa la la la la la la la la.
Rock of Ages Rock of ages, let our song raise thy saving power Thou amidst the raging foes, wast our sheltering tower. Furious they assailed us, but thine arm availed us And thy word broke their sword, when our own strength failed us. And thy word broke their sword, when our own strength failed us.
O holy night, the stars are brightly shining; It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn! Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices! O night divine! O night when Christ was born! O night divine! O night, O night divine!
Auld Lang Syne Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And days of auld lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We’ll raise a cup o’ kindness yet, For auld lang syne.
