A champion of new music, he has been the recipient of a considerable number of works written for him by prominent composers. Mr. Levy has taught at numerous colleges, and is currently an instructor at Montclair State University. He maintains an active and on-going affiliation with the Manhattan School of Music, Juilliard, and NJ PAC. Mr. Levy conceived two "minifestivals" which were presented by the NY Public Library at Lincoln Center. In 2008 Mr. Levy played in St. Petersburg, Russia, and at the venerable Stratford (CA) Summer Music Festival (with Palisades Virtuosi). Program Notes Spring 2013 Welcome to the spring concert of the Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus. We’re glad you are here and we believe we have a program that all will find entertaining and inspiring. We have tunes from Broadway, from the classic “American Songbook,” from Scotland and England. You will hear us sing about love, patriotism, faith and sorrow. You will also be enthralled by our guest artist, our soloists, and Ron Levy at the piano. Here is what’s on our musical menu this Spring. Seize the Day (From “Newsies”) words by Jack Feldman, Music by Alan Menken, arranged by Roger Emerson “Newsies,” a musical about a strike among young newspaper boys in 1899, was first conceived in 1992 as a movie from the Disney studio. It opened on Broadway in 2012, garnering a batch of Tony Award nominations and winning for best score and best choreography. “Seize the Day” is a universally inspiring anthem about the power of solidarity and courage in the face of oppression. embraceable you Music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin, arranged by Jay Althouse Originally written in 1928 for an operetta that never made it to the stage, “Embraceable You” finally appeared in “Girl Crazy,” a Broadway musical produced in 1930. It has been recorded hundreds of times and is considered one of the era’s classics. The sophistication of the song is found in its light lyrics and rhythms, the sort that evoke images of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers on a star-lit dance floor. malagueña Music by Ernesto Lecuona, arranged by Clay Warnick Originally a movement of Lecuona’s “Suite Andalucia”, Malagueña evolved into a virtuoso guitar piece, a stirring march for drum and bugle corps and a pop vocal hit. The title means a girl from Malaga. In 1960, the pop vocal by Connie Francis hit the charts. Soon and very Soon Words and music by Andrae Crouch, Arrange by Rollo Dillworth. The troubles of the earth will not last, says this song, because believers are “goin’ to see the King.” Songwriter Andrae Crouch (b. 1942) began singing in his father’s San Francisco church at the age of 11. After a brief career as a teacher, Crouch began writing gospel songs that became favorites within the youth “Jesus 12
movement” music of the 1960s. Crouch also wrote or arranged music for singers such as Diana Ross, Elton John, Quincy Jones and Madonna, and won seven Grammy awards in gospel music categories. Prayer of the Children Words and music by Kurt Bestor. Arranged by Andrea S. Klouse. Children in wartime are often too young to understand the terror going on around them. A native of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Kurt Bestor grew up in Utah and began composing music as a teenager. He was a Mormon missionary in Yugoslavia when the war raged among Serbs, Bosnians and Croatians bringing death and destruction to the region. This poignant prayer asks whether the world will hear the prayers of children who are facing death and being torn from their home lands and their loved ones. The phrase “Dali _ujete sve dje_je molitve” is the song’s title in Croatian. “A Red, Red Rose” From a poem by Robert Burns, music by James Muholland. The poet also known as Bobbie Burns (1759-1796) is considered Scotland’s national poet, writing many of his poems in the Scots language as well as in English. He is the author of the New Year’s standard, “Auld Lang Syne,” (“Long Long Ago”), and Scottish patriotic songs. But Burns was a forerunner of the Romantic movement in poetry, and “A Red, Red Rose” is a man’s hymn to his beloved, the one he will love “till a’ the seas gang dry,” the one to whom he will return “Tho’ it were ten thousand mile.” “Carousel” medley Music by Richard Rodgers, Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein 2nd. Rodgers and Hammerstein followed the success of “Oklahoma” in 1943 with “Carousel” which opened in 1945 and became an instant hit. “Carousel” is a mixture of romance, intrigue, a longing for heaven and a tale of a community that comes together in good times and bad. It starts with a “real nice clambake” and takes us to the joy of June, “bustin’ out all over.” give Us A Song Words and music by Joseph M. Martin. Joseph Martin (b. 1959) is director of sacred music for Shawnee Press and has composed hundreds of works, including 40 cantatas, for church choirs and secular choruses including “The Arrow and the Song” which Martin wrote for our 2009 centennial. If our beloved “Hail! Friends of Music” were not the Orpheus Club theme song, this one might do. It asks for a song of grace, peace, freedom, courage that will have us sing together, with power and majesty, “one alleluia!” The Butterfly and the Bee By Richard Lane Our dear friend and pianist for 42 years, Richard Lane, wrote many songs for the Orpheus Club. Some were based on weighty lines from classic literature and 13
poetry; some were lofty words and melodies from his own creative musical and lyrical pen. This one is of a different sort, still bearing all the joys of our late friend’s musical skills. No man Is An Island (From a poem by John Donne, 1573-1631) by Joan Whitney and Alex Kramer, Arranged by Roy Ringwald John Donne’s poem declares the unity of the human family, where each one’s death is a loss to all. The words by Joan Whitney and Alex Kramer lift up the “living” side of Donne’s sentiment, where “each man’s joy is joy to me, and each man’s grief is my own.” Fred Waring and The Pennsylvanians made this song a hit when they recorded it in 1951. Hard Times Come Again No more Words and music by Stephen Foster, arranged by Donald Moore. Stephen Foster (1826-1864) published this song in 1854, as a “parlor song” with a social conscience. Those with “life’s pleasures” are asked to remember that all “sup sorrow with the poor” and that while people seek “mirth and beauty,” there are “frail forms fainting at the door.” It is a song appropriate for any time when the poor suffer and all have a responsibility to, in the rhetoric of poetry, see that “Hard Times Come Again No More.” The Testament of Freedom Words by Thomas Jefferson, music by Randall Thompson. Our nation’s third president had a gift for words that, though written as prose, had poetic “style” and the power to rouse the people of the newly-born United States of America to honor and defend the creation of a land where freedom reigned and liberty was intended for all. Randall Thompson (1899-1984) is one of the greatest American composers writing operas, choral and instrumental works, teaching, and setting unusual pieces of literature to grand music. Here he takes Jefferson’s words about the gifts God gives our country and creates a moving choral “testament of freedom.”

Orpheus Club Scholarship Program Roland L. Meyer Orpheus Club Scholarship
The Orpheus Club is proud to sponsor a scholarship program designed to honor and assist a graduating high school senior who has demonstrated extraordinary accomplishment in music and who intends to continue musical studies on the collegiate level. Since the program took on its current form in 1993, we have been pleased to recognize students from more than a dozen area high schools with grants totaling $17,000.00. These outstanding young musicians have gone on to study at colleges and universities across the country. Earlier this year, application packets were sent to area high schools. Additional information was made available on our web site and through the press. The students from whom we received applications all demonstrated high levels of accomplishment in their musical pursuits as well as in academics and other school activities. We are pleased to announce that the winner of the 2013 Roland L. Meyer Orpheus Club Scholarship award of $2000.00 is Yuta Takano from Ramsey. A senior at the Bergen County Academies, Hackensack, Yuta is a member of the Concert and Chamber Choirs. A multi-talented instrumentalist, his prime instrument is cello but he also plays the French horn, clarinet and bass clarinet. He has been elected to the Tri-M Music Honor Society and the National Honor Society. He plans to study cello performance in college.
Congratulations and Good Luck, Yuta! We thank all the individuals and groups who made donations to this valuable effort. Your support is much appreciated by the club and the student award recipients.
