Welcome! Welcome to the gala spring concerts of the Orpheus Club. Our singing membership is made up of men from all walks of life drawn together by the common bond of music. Our singers now come from northern New Jersey. We welcome your inquiries about singing with us. If singing is not for you but you enjoy attending our concerts, we invite you to consider becoming a subscribing member. As such, you will be kept apprised of our upcoming concerts and will enjoy significant savings on the cost of tickets. For more information feel free to speak with any singing member after the concert, visit our website (www.ridgewoodorpheusclub.org), or write to us (PO Box 114, Ridgewood).
In the fall of 1990, John Palatucci became music director of the Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus, Ridgewood’s oldest civic musical organization. His efforts to uphold and enhance the OCMC's proud history, tradition, and reputation, most recently include a performance of Johannes Brahms’ Rinaldo with the Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra but also include Brahms' Alto Rhapsody with the Adelphi Chamber Orchestra, Randall Thompson's The Testament of Freedom and Giuseppi Verdi's Hymn to the Nations with the Orchestra of Saint Peter-by-the-Sea, and the Maroon Men a cappella group from Ridgewood HS as well as several commissions of new music for male chorus which are dedicated to him and the OCMC. Since 1993 the OCMC and the Ridgewood Concert Band have collaborated on Howard Hanson's Song of Democracy, Ottorino Respighi's Laud to the Nativity, Aaron Copland's Old American Songs, the revised finale to Richard Wagner's opera Tannhäuser, and most recently the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album arranged for male chorus and concert band. In the spring of 2005, Mr. Palatucci led the OCMC in its Lincoln Center debut, performing at the Lincoln Center Library with the Palisades Virtuosi chamber ensemble. The OCMC became a charter member of the New Jersey Choral Consortium in 2008 where Mr. Palatucci sat on the board of directors and served as vice president. In January 2009, he was honored by his colleagues at Montclair State University by being selected as speaker at the annual Dr. Jack Sacher Memorial Lecture. Also in 2009, during the OCMC’s centennial year, he led a Ridgewood community choral festival which culminated in a performance with orchestra and soloist Ron Levy of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy. In 3
2011, his setting of Percy Grainger’s Sussex Mummers’ Christmas Carol for male chorus and piano was published by the International Percy Grainger Society. With Mr. Levy, he prepared the OCMC and its sister ensemble, the Ridgewood Choral, for a performance of the Beethoven Choral Fantasy with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Under the auspices of the NJCC, with the OCMC and the Rutgers University Glee Club, in 2012 he helped organize and oversee an inaugural state-wide men’s chorus workshop and concert at Rutgers University. A 2013 debut performance at Carnegie Recital Hall with members of the OCMC included the NYC premieres of Peter Findley’s Ubi caritas and Godfrey Schroth’s Orpheus with his lute. For more information about Mr. Palatucci, please visit the Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus web site: http://www.ridgewoodorpheusclub.org/the-director.html Ron Levy, internationally acclaimed pianist, has been called "first-class" by the New York Times. He regularly appears as a soloist, and in partnership with many of the world's leading singers and instrumentalists. A graduate of Oberlin, Mr. Levy is a founding member of the Hudson Trio, Kaleidoscope, the New World Trio, the Manchester Chamber Players, the Breucklen Trio and the award-winning Palisades Virtuosi, resident chamber ensemble at Bergen Community College and the University of Hawaii. He has been pianist and harpsichordist of the Oberlin Orchestra, the Adelphi Chamber Orchestra, the New Jersey and North Jersey Philharmonics, the Westchester Symphony, and the Albany Symphony. Presently he is Associate Artist with the All Seasons Chamber Players. For over 20 years, Mr. Levy was associated with the Manchester (VT) Music Festival, of which he was a faculty and Board member. While living in Vermont, he was Music Director & Conductor of the Opera Theatre in Weston, and impresario of the "Third Saturday" chamber music series at the historic Equinox Hotel, as well as the "Music on the Hill" series at the Southern Vermont Art Center. A champion of new music, he has been the recipient of a considerable number of works written for him by prominent composers. Mr. Levy has taught at numerous colleges, and is currently an instructor at Montclair State University; he maintains an active and on-going affiliation with the Manhattan School of Music, Juilliard, and NJ PAC. Mr. Levy conceived two "mini-festivals" which were presented by the NY Public Library at Lincoln Center. In 2008 Mr. Levy played in St. Petersburg, Russia, and at the venerable Stratford (CA) Summer Music Festival (with Palisades Virtuosi). Recently, Ron performed the inaugural concert of the new faculty recital series at MSU. He was joined by legendary clarinet virtuoso Stanley Drucker, and Ann Kim, solo cellist with the NY City Ballet. On November 29, 2013 Ron presented a concert at Carnegie Hall, performing sixteen works written for him (including two for the Orpheus Club). 4
A two-term President of the Professional Music Teachers' Guild of NJ, he is a contributing editor to BIM Music Publications, Switzerland. Recently Mr. Levy was appointed to the Board of the Rockland (NY) Symphony; in May, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of his concerto debut with that orchestra, Ron will perform the Grieg Piano Concerto and Beethoven’s Triple Concerto for violin, cello and piano. Mr. Levy served on the jury of the 2013 Heida Hermanns International Piano Competition. Recordings by Mr. Levy are available on the Albany, Centaur, Eroica, Koch International, MMF and High Point labels.

orpheuS club ScholarShip program The Orpheus Club is proud to sponsor a scholarship program designed to honor and assist a graduating high school senior who has demonstrated extraordinary accomplishment in music and who intends to continue musical studies on the collegiate level. Since the program took on its current form in 1993, we have been pleased to recognize students from more than a dozen area high schools with grants totaling $23,000.00. These outstanding young musicians have gone on to study at colleges and universities across the country. Earlier this year, application packets were sent to area high schools. Additional information was made available on our web site and through the press. The students from whom we received applications all demonstrated high levels of accomplishment in their musical pursuits as well as in academics and other school activities.

Program Notes April 2016 let all Men sinG by Keith Christopher
This rousing fanfare is more than a cry for all men to sing; it declares that if all people make their “creed” the joyful sound of musical harmony, it will be possible to find unity in word and deed. Contemporary composer Keith Christopher, a native of Wylie, Texas, has been frequently honored by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, and has produced over a thousand recordings for music publishers. Go not FaR FRoM Me by Nicola Antonio Zingarelli , arranged by John Palatucci
Nicola Zingarelli (1752-1837) wrote more than two dozen masses, 41 operas, 55 Magnificats, 23 Te Deums, 20 Cantatas, 50 Symphonies and many other works. This is a dramatic plea for God to be near and a promise that God’s praises will be sung. It has been a classic for choral singing. The special arrrangement for the Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus is by our director, John Palatucci. a niGhtinGale sanG in BeRkeley squaRe By Eric Maschwitz and Manning Sherwin, arrangement by David H. Kerr
Orpheus Club baritone David Kerr arranged this wonderful setting of a popular song that, with its remembrance of love and hope for the future, lifted spirits in England during the dark days of World War II. The song was written in 1939, in the small French fishing village of Le Lavandou, a favorite holiday site for the English. War clouds loomed over Europe It was sung in a local bar and published a year later, when it was performed in several reviews on London stages. Hit recordings were made by Ray Noble and Vera Lynn. Though it comes from dark days, the song’s sweet remembering of a kiss and the music of birds, evokes happy nostalgia in any era. olD Man noah Traditional
This rollicking sea chanty about Noah and his ark may have originated with a Broadway show in 1906. Or it may be earlier than that and was just appropriated for the show. But by the late 1920s, it had been recorded and was appearing in song books for glee clubs and other choral groups. o Bone Jesu By Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina
Palestrina (1528-1594) was one of the greatest Renaissance composers. He wrote dozens of masses and other types of religious music, first as musician at the cathedral of St. Agapito, the principal church of his native city, and then as organ-
12
ist and choir director at chapels and churches in Rome, including St. John Lateran and St. Mary Major as well as the Vatican. This work, although generally attributed to Palestrina, is possibly by Marc Antonio Ingegneri, a contemporary who was choirmaster at Cremona Cathedral. “auF DeM MeeRe” FRoM RinalDo by Johannes Brahms
This excerpt from Brahms’ secular cantata Rinaldo as written in 1863 to enter in a choral competition in Aachen and completed in 1868. From a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the cantata tells the story of the knight, Rinaldo, enchanted by a witch, but seeking to resume his knightly quest. The Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus was privileged to sing Rinaldo this year with the Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra, with famed tenor Noah Baetge singing the lead role. In this section, Rinaldo’s fellow sailors call him back to sea, where full sails and favorable winds will carry them on. JeRsey Boys by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio, arranged by Ed Lojeski
Oo-wee-oo-wah! Yeah, these are our guys, Franki Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DiVito, Nick Massi, and the creative record producer Bob Crewe, whose string of hits, distinctive falsetto style and songs with memorable beat and lyrics flowed through our lives as teenagers. The Four Seasons came together in 1960, and their first big hit was “Sherry.” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Rag Doll” and others followed. Bergenfield native Bob Gaudio wrote many of the songs and was instrumental in getting “Jersey Boys” on Broadway. The Broadway show opened in November, 2005, and those of us who bought the records 45 years ago now bought tickets. It won four Tony Awards, including best musical of the year. Our hair is different now, but we’re having a great time reproducing some of the songs of that era. The men of Orpheus dedicate this medley to the memory of Laura Reed, late wife of tenor Vernon Reed. “Jersey Boys” was her favorite musical (she saw it six times), she was a member of the Jersey Boys fan club and met Frankie Valli. In the last days of her fatal illness, she was still able to recognize and respond to music from “Jersey Boys,” another tribute to the power of music we love. This is for her and the whole Reed family. BlackBiRD by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, arranged by Paris Rutherford
This song was on the “White Album” of the Beatles, produced in 1968. Paul McCartney says it was inspired by the struggle for civil rights in the United States, or in another McCartney remembrance, it came after hearing a blackbird singing while the Fab Four was meditating in Rishikesh, India. The music, McCarney says, echoes “Bourrée in E minor,” a well-known lute piece by Johann Sebastian Bach.

these thinGs shall Be By Richard Lane, text from John A. Symonds
The late Richard Lane, a musician and composer of immense creativity, was the accompanist for the Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus for 42 years. He wrote many pieces of music for us and we honor his memory by performing one of them at each of our regular concerts. The text for “These Things Shall Be” is from John Addington Symonds (18401893). With a classical education from Harrow and later Balloil College, Oxford, Symonds was a scholar and poet. In this poem, Symonds longs for a more noble version of humanity where nations “unarmed shall live as comrades free.” Richard Lane’s music catches both the inspiration and complexity of the poet’s hopeful vision. “halleluJah choRus” FRoM chRist on the Mount oF olives By Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
Beethoven’s only oratorio was “Christ on the Mount of Olives,” begun in 1800 and finished a year later. Three solo voices, Jesus, Peter and a Seraph, are lead singers in the story of the last earthly days of Jesus. This chorus, a triumphant hymn of praise, is sung by an angelic choir as the finale to the oratorio. what woulD i Do without My Music Words and music by Harry Middlebrooks and Bruce Bolland, arranged by Alwyn Humphreys
Harry Middlebrooks began singing in church choirs in his native Georgia and formed his first quartet when he was 14. He has written songs for Tom Jones, Liberace, Eddy Arnold, the Oak Ridge Boys, Andy Williams and Roy Clark. He has also acted in many television shows and stage productions. This song is a tribute to the power of music and the healing that comes when a “song grows deep inside my soul.” When “everything seems wrong,” he says, music gives “hope so I can carry on.” We in the Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus agree.
