a championship
winning start to the 2012 season
A message from Frosty Hey Team Steel! We hope you enjoy our first edition of ‘Driving Force’ for 2012. So far we’ve got off to a flying start to the year and the race wins have been coming thick and fast for both myself and my teammate Will Davison after three rounds of the championship. This is going to be the year of Orrcon Steel Racing I can feel it! I know I say it every year but I am still yet to bag a championship and I’m feeling more focused and fitter than ever before and the speed of this FPR Falcon is just awesome. It’s a massive year, the biggest ever in fact with 16 rounds to travel too and the atmosphere around the workshop is at a highly motivating level where everyone is striving towards victory. I’m looking forward to another great year with Orrcon Steel Racing and I look forward having you onboard for the race to the Championship. Cheers,
Orrcon Steel Racing’s super start to the V8 Supercars season Welcome to the first edition of Orrcon Steel Racing’s quarterly ‘Driving Force’ magazine. A spectacular livery launch for #5 Orrcon Steel FPR Ford Orrcon Steel Racing unveiled it’s striking new 2012 livery in spectacular fashion at the Medibank Icehouse in Melbourne in February alongside the announcement that star driver Mark Winterbottom has extended his contract with Ford Performance Racing (FPR) until the end of the 2014 season. The #5 Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon was revealed in ‘Frosty’ fashion when Winterbottom was joined by Olympic gold medallist, Steven Bradbury for the official launch, which saw the car become the first V8 Supercar to ever drive on ice.
The fresh new 3D design of the Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon in all blue sees the return of the Falcon head to the rear of the car, with some of the best results coming from this design, namely 2008 when Frosty finished second in the Championship. For the past ten years of Orrcon Steel FPR Falcon liveries this is the most aggressive yet and with ten years under the belt the scene is set for the year of Orrcon Steel in the race for the V8 Supercars Championship. The event was a pure spectacle on ice inside a venue built using Orrcon Steel by long-time
associates AMS Fabrications just three years ago and in record time with the structural steel fabricators finishing the mammoth job in just nine months. Winterbottom has finished in the top-five in the V8 Supercars Championship every year since joining the factory Ford squad. The announcement of his contract extension ensures the team will have the same driver line-up heading into the Car of the Future era from next season with Orrcon Steel-backed team mate, Will Davison already signed until the end of 2013.
Round 1 - Clipsal 500, Adelaide Parklands Orrcon Steel celebrated with Ford Performance Racing on Sunday night after the opening round of the championship with the team’s factory Ford drivers Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom finishing one-two at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide. Davison’s win was his first with the Orrcon Steel-backed FPR team and first around the daunting Adelaide street circuit. “This is a special day and 78 green laps is tough stuff but I just had such a great car it couldn’t have gone any better. It’s a huge achievement by the team to grab the one-two and it’s great to finally secure that maiden win with FPR,” commented a very cheery Davison. Orrcon Steel Racing’s Winterbottom was on the pace with his teammate and when they passed Garth Tander on lap 46 there was no stopping either factory Ford driver. Unfortunately, getting hung up in traffic around his first pit stop, Frosty lost out on just a few seconds which proved to be enough for his faultless teammate to drive away to victory. “I got stuck behind lapped cars on the in-lap and got caught up by cars again on the out lap as well, which didn’t help and lost about four seconds,” explained Winterbottom. “Will was the ultimate perfectionist and didn’t put a foot wrong so there was no catching him but I’m happy to finish second and put myself in a firm Championship position to start the year.” Whincup won Saturday’s race by passing Orrcon Steel-backed FPR driver Davison on the final lap after Davison had to back off to conserve fuel. He managed to cross the line in second and make it 50 metres passed the finish-line before running out of fuel. It was literally a splash of fuel that cost Winterbottom his first win in Adelaide on Saturday after the team’s calculations were just 0.5% out, which forced him to pit for a third time on the penultimate lap of the race and eventually finish ninth.
N/C Round - Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, Albert Park
Orrcon Steel-backed Ford Performance Racing secured the V8 Supercars round win and a healthy $100,000 paycheck with Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom at Albert Park. After winning the opening qualifying race and two 12lap races over the weekend Frosty was looking to take a clean sweep of wins on Sunday but it was not to be after the Orrcon Steel #5 Ford was swamped off the line by
several competitors heading into turn 1. After slipping back to seventh, from pole on the opening lap, Frosty fought back to finish fifth for race 4 which secured him the round victory by a two points over Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen. “The team did an amazing job all weekend and it’s great to pick up the big paycheck but a
shame there was no points on offer here this weekend! (Due to the Grand Prix being a nonchampionship round)” Frosty commented. “Four-from-four [wins] would have been nice but the fact we won three puts a real spring in the step heading into the rest of the 2012 season.” Orrcon Steel Racing teammate Will Davison was another star performer as his two thirds and a fourth place finish saw him finish fourth overall for the weekend of dominance by the FPR Fords. Davsion played with different race strategy and was the unlucky contender after producing arguably the fastest race pace all weekend. “FPR had a great weekend and we were very fast across all four races. Looking ahead we are in a great position and this has been a great start to what will hopefully be a winning year for FPR,” commented Davison.
Round 2 - Tasmania Challenge, Symmons Plains Raceway Will Davison and Mark Winterbottom dominated the field at the Tasmania Challenge on Saturday by finishing first and second respectively for the 120km Race 3 of the V8 Supercars Championship. After qualifying on pole for the race Frosty was swamped off the line by teammate Davison who had earlier qualified second to make it an Orrcon Steel FPR lockout on the front row of the grid. The pair diced and by the end of the race a mere 0.63s separated the two Fords in what was another faultless performance by FPR. “That was an intense race and
another massive effort by the team. Will has stepped up a gear this year and it’s made me have to dig deep and drive faster,” commented Frosty. Both FPR cars pitted on laps 24 and 25 and once positions had re-sorted themselves it was clear the Fords were in a league of their own as they ended up some nine seconds ahead of third placed Jamie Whincup by the end of the race. Frosty and Davison then both finished inside the top-5 during the 200km feature race on Sunday at Symmons Plains however it looked like a Frosty win until a mechanical error
saw his #5 Orrcon Steel Ford stall coming out of his final pitstop as he lost nine seconds to the field. Davison’s third was enough to keep him in the lead of the 2012 Championship with Frosty moving up to third with a second and fifth combining for a great bag of points. The race win on Sunday went to Whincup. Teams now head to New Zealand for the ITM400 Hamilton where the Orrcon Steel-sponsored Ford Performance Racing outfit will look to continue its dominance of the V8 Supercars field.
Orrcon Steel Racing - 2012 V8 Supercars Championship stats So far in 2012 seven races have been run and both Davison and Winterbottom share two wins each as the two factory Fords have dominated the opening scene of what is set to be one of the most exciting championship years to-date. Frosty’s postcard In a continued effort to engage further with our strong Team Steel following, Mark Winterbottom has been one busy driver for Orrcon Steel Racing this year, travelling to several key markets for various Orrcon Steel interactions including: customer visits, branch openings, staff visits, potential client functions, corporate suite visits and media calls weeks in advance of events to engage Team Steel members and fans during the lead-up to key events. February was a particularly busy month with visits to Adelaide, Bundaberg and
Brisbane as a build-up for Orrcon Steel Racing leading into the 2012 season opener, the Clipsal 500. In Adelaide Frosty made visits to Orrcon Steel’s O’Sullivan Beach manufacturing plant for their staff recognition day where he chatted to the guys about the year ahead, helped draw raffles for some great Orrcon Steel Racing prizes and raced the employees on the Daytona 500 simulators. After two media calls and a photoshoot at the track Frosty paid visit to the Phoenix Society - an organisation that employs, trains and develops people with disabilities to attain an
improved quality of life through employment, School to Work Transition Programs and our Intensive Training Unit. The two-day trip finished off with a visit to Orrcon Steel’s new Gilman distribution centre for a barbeque and chat with the friendly staff before heading back to Melbourne to prepare for the opening round back in Adelaide in just under two weeks time. The trip was an extremely meaningful exercise as Frosty engaged with hundreds of Orrcon Steel staff, signed over 200 Orrcon Steel Racing caps from some very excited folk at the Phoenix Society.
Just a week later Frosty was off again to sunny Queensland for an Orrcon Steel branch opening in Bundaberg before heading to Brisbane for Orrcon Steel’s family day at head office in Salisbury. Bundaberg kickedoff with the brand new branch and showroom opening where Frosty spent the day signing autographs for the constant flow of public throughout the day who enjoyed rides on the Orrcon Steel V8 Supercar motion simulator, pictures with the #5 Orrcon Steel V8 Supercar, a sausage sizzle and of course the chance to meet their favourite V8 Supercar driver and have a one-on-one chat with Frosty.
The final stop on the QLD leg was back in Brisbane for the inaugural Orrcon Steel family day at head office which, was a huge success with hundreds of staff and their families attending the day enjoying several activities, including; the Orrcon Steel motion simulator, face-painting, sausage sizzle and kids were even given the job of hand painting a full size Falcon! Frosty was there signing autographs and chatting to the guys and girls about his year ahead with Orrcon Steel Racing and telling the kids a few stories of his time spent with Lightening McQueen during the making of the Cars 2 movie. All three warehouses were open
for tours as staff members were able to take their partners and children inside the mills and warehouses and show them exactly where they worked and what they operated. A fantastic opportunity for many and a great initiative from Orrcon Steel.
