The land use, the circle railway as interruption, the redevelopment of urban spaces and the lack of recognisable reference points are the problems of the city of Milan that need an answer. Furthermore, like many other European cities, has a horizontal development with some vertical exceptions. Our proposal is a model of a repeatable intervention along the Eastern circle railway of Milan characterized by punctual elements assembled by two parts. A vertical element on a grand scale becoming a recognisable icon for the surrounding areas and what we called “horizontal skyscraper” that follows the city structure. The idea is to diversify the building from the street level creating a continuity, and occupy the space above the rail adding new uses for this space, opening a window onto the city. At the same time, our building is also a bridge that reconnects the two parts of the urban pattern separated by the railway embankment. Every horizontal skyscraper is supported by a great vertical element that grafts on the existing stations along the railway layout. Secondary bodies are added over the platforms to completion of the main volume overlapped in always different ways. To support the different horizontal volumes there are some cylinders made up of structural tubular framework. Right inside the wide spaces of the

0

volume intersections are used to connect several floors. The concept designs a complex made by pure volumes intersecting together. The sustainability is a relevant part of the project, thanks to the use of recycled building materials and a rainwater and draining purification system. The remarkable extension of our skyscraper allows, easily, to collect the water in three special tanks, where it’s purified and employed for draining or irrigation. The whole structure is made up of steel trusses, clearing out as much as possible the structures at the platform level and having more flexible spaces inside the building. The cladding of horizontal bodies is in photo-catalytic concrete, a material that allows to purify the air pollution into harmful substances, thanks to the sunlight. The vertical body that grafts contains functions connected to the station, offices and a conference room. The horizontal body shows a space designated as a marketplace in the first two floors, while the upper two contain the research laboratories. The body that inserts in the second floor, contains the food court, while the volume that inserts in the third floor include the hydroponic plantations linked to the research area. In the proposal presented has been developed the element that grafts in the old building of the Lambrate train station.

FUNCTIONS Every graft is composed of: 1. vertical pillar connected to the railway station with tertiary, auditorium and cafè. 2. horizontal inhabited beams specialized insectors different from one graft to another: this building includes functions related to FOOD, from the research of innovative intensive farming to the trade and the comsuption of the “km 0” products.

RECYCLE OF RAINWATER

Throught rainwater collection the building does not affect local water resources but can , in part, support itself. Water is harvested and used in different ways into the building,it is employed for draining toilets or cleansed by phytodepuration. The plants (iris and lotus flower) help to create a suitable habitat for the growing of bacterial flora, that is able to purify water. After this process the result is used for building plantations. Rainwater is partially channeled inside laboratories in which it is analized and employed for experimental researches.

The building is North/South oriented so it benefits of a very good radiation all day long. The most radiate surfaces are also the widest, indeed they do correspond to the roof of the horizontal part and walls of the vertical element. Starting from this consideration the material used to coat the building is photocathalytic cocrete. Photocatalysis is a naturale oxidetion process in which a substanced called catalyst (in this case the TX active), through sunlight, trasform harmfull substances into harmless one. Therefore thanks to this material is possible to purify the polluted air of Milan.

WORKSHOP NEW URBAN CAMPUSES: FROM COLLEGE TOWN TO CITY OF KNOWLEDGE URBAN ANALYSIS AND LESSONS

Personal contribuition: ANALYSIS AND DIAGRAMS co authors: Alberto Cuneo, Alberto Pamisani

12

The target of the workshop was the contribuition to the international debate about the central role of the college settlements in the cultural, economical and social growth of the contemporary city and through its transformation processes. The strategic role of the university in the “economy of knowledge” and its relationships with the systems of the most innovative research companies, show campuses and cities as two synergetic and interrelated realities, answering to the future development of the city of the XXI century, creating the model of the “city of knowledge”. Harvard University is often showed as a campus integrated with the urban landscape, where the college buildings mix with public and cultural spaces and the academic life is strenghten by the “informal” exchange created by the proximity between classes, services and residences. The growing purposes of the academic targets, the quality of the teaching and research headquarters built ties with the development and local upgrading in the ecological sphere, aiming to give birth to a new university district where new scientific clusters are integrated with residences, commercial, artistic, cultural areas and sport equipments shared by the univerity with the Allston community. The workshop let the partecipants to compare the different topics building to build a specific knowledge through a trip to Boston and sharpen analyitical

13

methodologies and understanding procedures aiming to the development of a project for a new urban campus, with the definition, in-depth analysis and complexity needed for this contemporary topic. For this purpose, the work carried out in Milan in the school of Civil Architecture, and in Boston, in the Graduated School of Design with the academic itineraries, supported an analysis method and inter-disciplinary research starting from the buildings studied from Harvard University, its future expansion in Allston, the Massachussetts Institute of Technology, and its ongoing relationships in Kendall Square. The analysis of the present universitary settlement of Cambridge and its relationship with the city of Boston and the Greater Boston, the comparison with the MIT campus model and interpretation of the potential of Allston area, related to the development plan by Harvard University had as final target a “Study report” built by the students.
