Introduction

This is the third anniversary of the establishment of the Urban Sketchers Budapest Group. We meet every second Saturday to draw and paint together, and our posted work can be seen on Facebook and the Budapest Sketchers blog. Some of our members took part in the 2016 Manchester Symposion, and returned with lots of new impressions and ideas. They also brought back a number of books, and hence we got the idea of publishing a book. It is for those who would wish to come to Budapest, or just to spend some time in the city, and grabbing their art supplies, would want to do a bit of sketching. We often meet foreign visitors at our common sketching events, and we noticed that they would welcome a sketching guidebook of the city. We also thought of the many sketchers all around Hungary. Our book is available on the Internet in English and published in printed form. It was not our goal to publish yet another tourist guidebook, but rather to feature those areas of our city which keep inspiring the sketchers to commit them to paper. We endeavoured to include as many of our members’ work as possible, at the same time attending to the variety of styles. It is instructive to see ‒ and we hope the readers will find them so as well ‒ how one subject was interpreted by different sketchers. The sketches’ level of proficiency varies, since the USkB membership can boast of professionals as well as those who are self-taught artists. However, we all share the love of drawing, and we all love to show off our beautiful city ‒ one sketch at a time ‒ to the rest of the world. Please accept this volume of sketches which we offer with our best wishes to the Urban Sketchers at large, welcoming you all to the lovely city of Budapest. Happy sketching! How to use this book There are always plenty of sites and subjects to sketch in Budapest. But guests from abroad, or those who come only for a short visit, may find the wide variety of site choices a bit daunting. In this book we would like to introduce the most popular sketching (mostly UNESCO) sites. A bit like a restaurant menu, as it were ‒ to help with sketching-visit decisions. We divided the city into “sketch-sections”, so as to facilitate designing sketching tours. To spark the imagination, on some of the pages we introduce the manifold visual renderings of a single area. We hope the readers will find it instructive to see the variety of styles and media used by the Budapest Urban Sketchers Group to depict a single site. We know it makes a difference where and under what conditions we sketch. For this reason we provided a key for each site using pictograms. This way the sketcher can decide when to visit an area and what conditions to expect there. Inner City Parliament The Parliament can be visited and the tours are multilingual. It is the place where the Royal Crown, the symbol of the country, is displayed. Sketching is allowed in the domed hall, but no photographing.

Inner City Kossuth Square The Museum of Ethnography is quite picturesque inside as well as outside. We suggest sketching here during cold or rainy days. In the summer it is refreshing to take a break in the café of the Visitor Center (Látogatóközpont) or the Smúz Café to the north of the Parliament.

Inner City Strolling around This area is not extensive; we can either walk or take the No.2 tram which takes you along the most beautiful of the numerous wharves of the Danube. Though the view of Buda across the river is lovely, don’t forget to take note of the buildings on the wharf. Besides, more and more restaurants and cafes are opening in this area. The Vigadó, built in the neoclassical style is equally enchanting in the inside, and the home for many cultural events.

Inner City Strolling around We leave the wharf at the March 15 th Square. The busiest street is Váci Street, loved by many tourists. Here it is a real challenge to find a peaceful place for sketching.

Inner City Strolling around Let’s explore the small streets. At Kossuth Lajos Street we can cross either underground or on the surface. In some areas there are dense crowds, in others small nooks ensure peaceful sketching, especially before noon.

Inner City Strolling around If you happen to be around Szabadság Square, take a look at the Bedő House. A restored Art Nouveau building with a museum café is worth a visit. Close by is the Downtown Market in Hold Street where we can find good food, and an opportunity for buying Hungaricum specialities. 24

Vörösmarty Square This area is always crowded no matter when you visit. In December it is the home of one of the most exciting Christmas fairs in Europe. Unfortunately, it tends to be quite cold this time of the year, so you’ll need to bundle up. Fortunately, mulled wine is never too far away. 30

The Lesser Boulevard St. Stephen Basilica St. Stephen Basilica is a prominent element of the Lesser Boulevard, though only the apse fronts onto this street. You’ll need to go around the building to access the main entrance and to enjoy the full view. Since it is quite a large edifice, so we suggest sketching its many exquisite architectural details. 35

The Lesser Boulevard Along the old city wall Dont look for street signs that say “Kiskörút”. Each section of this boulevard has a different name. The city wall is all but gone. Parts of the wall that used to surround what is the Inner City, may still be seen in the inner courtyards of a few buildings. The city swallowed it up, so to speak. Deák Square should not be missed because it is a transportation hub and a truly stimulating place for sketching.

The Lesser Boulevard Synagogue With a short walk from Deák Square, we reach Dohány Street, where we find the largest neolog synagogue in Europe. It also houses the Holocaust memorial.

The Lesser Boulevard Along the old city wall Astoria is a busy transportation hub and hence hectic foot traffic. From here, in an arc, the Museum Boulevard is lined with old buildings deserving a sketch. Continuing south along the Boulevard, we reach the Central Market where real Hungaricum products are for sale. On a cold or rainy day it is an ideal place for a sketch and some food. 50

The Grand Boulevard From Margaret Bridge to Blaha Lujza Square This boulevard was built in 22 years at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, replacing one of the branched waterways of the Danube. For this reason the building facades tend to be rather uniform. Again, no street sign “Nagykörút” is to be found anywhere, since each section of the boulevard bears a different name. It runs from Margaret Bridge to Petőfi Bridge, and numerous theaters, museums, hotels, apartment buildings, and the Western Railway Station are located here. Even today it is one of the main transportation lines of the city. 55

The Grand Boulevard From Blaha Lujza Square to Petőfi Bridge This section of the Grand Boulevard is not as visually exciting as the others, but it still holds a few gems and surprises. Looking above the trees, we can note some lovely details. One of the masterpieces of the Hungarian Art Nouveau, the Museum of Industrial Arts, should definitely be part of your Budapest sketch tour.

The Grand Boulevard Beauty is in the details Hidden inside the buildings with eclectic facades are inner courtyards that have a magic of their own. Most are not easy to access, but if you find one of the entry doors open, do go in and look up: a miriad engaging details offer themselves for sketching. Then grab a coffee in the enchanting elegant hall of the New York Café. 65

Around the boulevards Easily accessible sketching subjects The old city wall was build between the 17th to the 19th centuries, replacing the one time branch of the Danube. Apartment buildings, having 1 to 5 floors and the oldest having only 1-2 floors, line these streets. The impressive palace-type edifices built at the turn of the 20th century, contrast with the lower, older ones. The massive fire walls and the forest of chimneys, visible from many streets offer the sketchers exciting opportunities. 70

City Park Heroes’ Square At the end of Andrássy Boulevard, we find the memorial on Heroes’ Square erected for the millenial celebration of the establishment of the state of Hungary. The afternoon light is the best for sketching in this area.

City Park Vajdahunyad

Actually, this is not a real castle but variety of well-known Hungarian buildings in different styles built into a complex. The Vajdahunyad Castle, which is a copy of the real Vajdahunyad fortification in Transylvania, is best viewed from Heroes’ Square. But the entire structure offers a wide variety of sketching opportunities from a number of easliy accessible directions.

City Park Wellness Behind Heroes’ Square we find the City Park with its ancient trees, walkways, the Széchenyi Bath, a lake for boating, and the ice skating rink. Of course there is a chance for resting up at Gundel or Robinson Restaurants. 101

City Park Zoo and the Amusement Park In the winter there is the skating rink, and in summer the Zoo or the Amusement Park for fun. All these places are super opportunities for sketching the rich activities of the moment.

Margaret Island Escaping the bustle of the city, we find peace here. Ancient trees, green groves, and colorful flowerbeds offer a refreshing relief. On the north side of the island, we suggest the Japanese garden for sketching.

The Castle The Royal Palace

From an advantage point, the imposing mass of the Royal Palace on the hill claims our attention. It is especially impressive when seen from Gellért Hill, or the Tabán. The medieval structures hide behind the dominant neo-baroque, newer structure. Today the old royal residence is the home of a number of museums. Indoors or out, both offer ample opportunities and subjects for fruitful sketching.

The Castle Festival of Folk Arts The annual Festival of Folk Arts is held on the Castle premises. It is truly a cavalcade of market activity. The many folk art demonstrations are excellent subjects for sketching. There is never a shortage of a good eat and drink for the weary artist. 141

There are both baroque and medieval buildings here. The many bay windows and prominent balconies beg for a sketch. Take a peek into the open gates for a real treat. Restaurants, pastry shops, and small boutiques await the visitor. Be sure not to miss the Ruszwurm patissery with its biedermeier interior. Sketch while enjoying a piece of cake!

The Castle Fishermen’s Bastion The structure is barely a hundred years old, but it is probably the most visited and sketched place among all the buildings in the Castle district. Seen from the foot of the hill, the morning to noon hours are the most advantageous for dramatic light effect. From the top of the Bastion, sketching the panorama of Pest is best in the afternoon.

The Castle Matthias Church There were three churches in the Castle, but after the bombings in WW II, only the Magdalene Tower remains of the Church of the Garrison. We find the Protestant church by the Vienna Gate. The most visited church is Matthias Church. Notice how it has been interpreted in the sketches. 156

Watertown (Víziváros) The heart of Buda Thermal baths This is the part of Buda that lies between the Danube and the Castle, and it holds a lot of history. It is no accident that it is called “Víziváros” since the baths build over the thermal spings are of ancient origin, and several are reminders of the 150-year Turkish occupation of Hungary. All are worth a visit for their beneficial thermal waters.

There is a metro station here, and the HÉV train to Szentendre as well as a number of buses toward the Buda hills, all start from here. Watertown (Víziváros) The heart of Buda Fő utca (Main Street) has been an important route for centuries. Because it is still a busy road, it is not easy to find a peaceful spot for sketching. Our best chance for this is to find a sidewalk café.

Southward along At the end of Fő utca the Chain Bridge, the Tunnel, and the cable car to the Castle beckons us for a sketch. In addition to exhibitions, entertainment programs, shopping, a coffee, or just for a look around the newly renovated Castle Garden (Várkert Bazár) is a must for sketchers.

Southward along Further south along the river are the few ancient buildings still standing of the demolished Tabán district. This spot presents the best view to Gellért Hill and the Castle. Discover the tiny pastry shop, Asztalka, right next to the church.

Gellért Square We get an imposing view of Buda from Gellért Square: Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd), the Hotel Gellért and Spa, the Technical University, and the Statue of Liberty. The most complete view can be had from the bridge. The best time to sketch is before noon, since the sun hits the cliffs the most advantegously. 181

Gellért Hill It is worth the effort to climb the hill. Each turn of the path presents a new view for sketching. In every direction the panorama of the city is the most striking by the statue of St. Gellért. It will take more than a few minutes of sketching to do it justice.

Old Buda (Óbuda) To the north of Margaret Bridge is Old Buda, perhaps the most ancient part of the city. The remaining ancient buildings are the most interesting.

North Buda Even farther north we find ancient Roman ruins and abandoned factories. At Római-part (Roman riverbank) the Danube shows its natrual face, sporting boathouses and fried bread stands.

South Buda To the south of Gellért Hill there are buildings of more recent vintage. Loud entertainment has moved onto the Danube. Farther down there are cozy suburbs, and more sketching opportunities.

The Buda Mountains While Pest is as flat as a tabletop, Buda is hilly: by the river the Gellért Hill and the Castle Hill are most prominent, beyond them are higher mountains, which the city has not yet claimed. Here are walkways into the forests and lookout towers. 201
