Quotes from Saints

“Have confidence in the compassion of our Creator. Reflect well on what you are now doing, and keep before you the things you have done. Lift up your eyes to the overflowing compassion of heaven, and while He waits for you, draw near in tears to our merciful Judge. Having before your mind that He is a Just Judge, do not take your sins lightly; and having also in mind that He is compassionate, do not despair. The God-Man gives man confidence before God.” ~ St. Gregory the Great

“Never confuse the person, formed in the image of God, with the evil that is in him: because evil is but a chance misfortune, an illness, a devilish reverie. But the very essence of the person is the image of God, and this remains in him despite every disfigurement.”

- St. John of Kronstadt, My Life in Christ

“You must bear the spiritual infirmities of your brother gladly, and without annoyance. For when someone is physically ill, we are not only not annoyed with him, but we are exemplary in our care of him; we should also set an example in cases of spiritual illness.”

~ St. Moses of Optina

ANTIPHON

THE

THE THIRD ANTIPHON O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy endureth forever. Let the house of Israel now confess that He is good; for His mercy endureth forever. Let the house of Aaron confess that He is good; for His mercy endureth forever. Let them now who fear the Lord confess that He is good; for His mercy endureth forever. APOLYTIKION OF THE THEOPHANY OF CHRIST IN TONE ONE When Thou, O Lord, wast baptized in the Jordan, worship of the Trinity wast made manifest; for the voice of the Father bore witness to Thee, calling Thee His beloved Son. ST.

BASIL

KONTAKION OF THE THEOPHANY OF CHRIST IN TONE FOUR On this day Thou hast appeared * unto the whole world, * and Thy light, O Sovereign Lord, * is signed on us who sing Thy praise * and chant with knowledge: Thou hast now come, * Thou hast appeared, O Thou Light unapproachable. 5

EPISTLE THE

Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us. Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. The Reading f rom the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians. (4:7-13) Brethren, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore, it is said, “When He ascended on high He led a host of captives, and He gave gifts to men.” (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that He had also descended into the lower parts of

6

the earth? He who descended is He who also ascended far above all the heavens, that He might f ill all things.) And His gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

GOSPEL THE

The reading f rom the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (4:12-17) At that time, when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulon and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulf illed: “The land of Zebulon and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” 7

Sunday after the Theophany of Christ All the preaching of Christ and His Church can be summed up in only one word: repentance. As we heard in today’s Gospel reading, Christ began his preaching with repentance and he ended it up also with repentance. After His Resurrection, He commanded the Apostles to proclaim repentance in His name to all the nations. Jesus began His preaching in Capernaum of Galilee, and said, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Mat. 4:17). Of course, in the beginning, repentance was preached to the peoples who did not know the true God and worshiped the creation, such as idols, the sun, the moon, the stars, the f ire and demonic spirits. However, the Church of Christ continues to this day to call upon its baptized members to repent. And this is because “we all stumble in many things”(James 3:2). “For who shall be pure f rom uncleanness? No one. Even if his life is but one day upon the earth” (Job 14:4). And “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8). Even the Great Apostle of Christ, St. Paul, comes to the point of saying that he is the f irst among the sinners, whom Christ has come to save (I Tim.1:15). My brothers, if the Apostle Paul had this opinion of himself, despite the fact that he succeeded in going up to the third heaven while he was alive on earth, then we can easily understand how much more we ought to feel our sinfulness! - by father Sotirios Pissitias
