THE PATRON OF ICONOGRAPHERS
Saint Luke was from the city of Antioch and was likely from a pagan family. As a young boy, he sought wisdom and loved to study the arts and sciences. He was gifted as a physician and painter. There are two traditions that are told of Saint Luke. The first one is that he was one of the Seventy Disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ and was in Jerusalem at the time of the Passion. He was upset over the death of Jesus but that unhappiness turned to joy when Jesus joined them on their journey. In the breaking of the bread, Jesus showed that He was truly risen. (Luke 24:35) After the Holy Spirit descended on the day of Pentecost, Luke stayed for a time in Jerusalem. There is a story that on his way back to Antioch, he obtained the relic of the right hand of Holy Forerunner and took it with him. It is likely he met Saint Paul in Antioch and began the course of his second missionary work. The second tradition says that Luke did not know Jesus and that he met Saint Paul while working as a physician during the reign of Claudius. Paul’s dynamic preaching convinced him of the Truth that he had sought for so long in his search for wisdom. Without hesitating, he gave up his profession to follow Paul and he became the beloved physician of souls. (Col.4:14) It is the tradition of the Church that Saint Luke was the first iconographer. He painted an image of the Holy Mother of God in her lifetime. The Holy Virgin gave praise to him saying, “May the grace of Him who was born of me be upon this image.” Saint Luke painted other images of the Holy Virgin and the Apostles, giving birth to the tradition of venerating icons of Christ and His Saints. For this reason, Saint Luke is honored as the patron of iconographers. -myocn.net
ANTIPHON tHE
RESURRECTIONAL APOLYTIKION IN TONE SEVEN Thou didst shatter death by Thy Cross, Thou didst open paradise to the thief; Thou didst turn the sadness of the ointment-bearing women into joy. And didst bid Thine Apostles proclaim a warning, that Thou hast risen O Christ, granting to the world the Great Mercy. TROPARION OF ST. BASIL THE GREAT IN TONE 1 In all the earth that received thy sayings, thy melody did resound, O righteous father, through which thou didst go about and proclaim, as worthy of God, the 4
nature of creatures, cultivating the character of mankind, O thou of kingly Priesthood, Basil. Wherefore, plead thou with Christ God to save our souls. ORDINARY KONTAKION IN TONE TWO O protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the Creator most constant, O despise not the suppliant voices of those who have sinned; but be thou quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession, and speed thou to make supplication, thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.
EPISTLE tHE
The Lord will give strength to His people. Ascribe to the Lord, O sons of God, ascribe to the Lord honor and glory. The Reading from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. (6:1-10) Brethren, working together with Him, then, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For He says, “At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation.” Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found
with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything. 5
GOSPEL THE
The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (5:1-11) At that time, Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. And He saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, Jesus asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when Jesus had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at Thy word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, they 6
enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish, which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.

Fishers of Men
In today’s Gospel reading St. Peter with the rest of the holy Apostles were astonished at the catch of fish which they had caught. Christ our Lord had sat in St. Peter’s boat and was teaching the people. The Disciples had worked very hard all night long, but they had caught nothing. St. Peter at the commandment of Christ let down the net and then God’s blessings came, for “they caught a great number of fish” (Luke 5:6). Obedience to God’s Will is man’s first and foremost duty. Second most important is to carry out His Divine Commandments. The godly man strives to conform himself to whatever God wishes. Man through obedience to God identifies himself with God, and his will with God’s Divine Will. The holy Apostle Peter at the greatest moment of his difficult hours of disappointment and depression, showed obedience to Christ. The result is obvious. God blesses the work of all those who struggle with honesty. St. Peter was blessed, because he showed obedience to Christ. God’s blessings came as the result of Peter’s obedience to His Will. The miracle at Gennesaret came about because of St. Peter’s faithfulness. St. Peter knew very well, being an experienced fisherman, that there could be no fish in the shallow waters of Gennesaret. All night long he worked with his collaborafors and, yet, they caught nothing. But, he showed obedience to Christ’s word and he let down the nets. For Christ’s sake he did not hesitate. He did not say, that ‘We are wasting our time’. He just obeyed and trusted Christ’s word. If we wish to have God’s blessings in our homes, our works and our lives, then we have to turn to Him, bow before Him and trust ourselves to His Divine Providence. Let us imitate St. Peter’s example. Let us show trust and faith in Christ, our Lord and Savior. Let us practice God’s Commandments. Let us be obedient to His Divine Will. This way of life will bring upon us God’s blessings. This is the way for our salvation, to be before God and surrender ourselves to Him. -Metropolitan Panteleimon of Antinoes
