St. Luke the Evangelist

On October 18 in the Holy Orthodox Church we commemorate the holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke. Luke was born in Antioch. In his youth, he excelled in his studies of Greek philosophy, medicine and art and became a physician. During the ministry of the Lord Jesus on earth, Luke came to Jerusalem where he saw the Savior face to face, heard His saving teaching and was witness to His miraculous works. Luke was numbered among the Seventy Apostles and was sent to preach throughout the world. With Cleopas, he saw the resurrected Lord on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24). After the descent of the Holy Spirit, Luke returned to Antioch and there became a fellow worker of the Apostle Paul and traveled to Rome with him, converting Jews and pagans to the Christian Faith. He wrote three icons of the Most-holy Theotokos—one of which is protected by the nuns of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Convent of Our Lady of Saydnaya in Syria. He also wrote icons of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. Hence, Luke is considered to be the founder of Christian iconography. In addition to his Gospel written in AD 60, Luke wrote the Acts of the Apostles and dedicated both works to Theophilus, the governor of Achaia. Luke was 84 years old when the wicked idolaters tortured him for the sake of Christ and hanged him from an olive tree in the town of Thebes, in Boethia. + Synaxarion

ANTIPHON tHE

RESURRECTIONAL APOLYTIKION IN TONE TWO When Thou didst submit Thyself unto death, O Thou deathless and immortal One, then Thou didst destroy hell with Thy Godly power. And when Thou didst raise the dead from beneath the earth, all the powers of Heaven did cry aloud unto Thee: O Christ, Thou giver of life, glory to Thee. APOLYTIKION OF ST. LUKE THE EVANGELIST IN TONE THREE O holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke, intercede with the merciful God, to grant our souls forgiveness of sins. TROPARION OF ST. BASIL THE GREAT IN TONE ONE In all the earth that received thy sayings, thy melody did resound, 4

O righteous father, through which thou didst go about and proclaim, as worthy of God, the nature of creatures, cultivating the character of mankind, O thou of kingly Priesthood, Basil. Wherefore, plead thou with Christ God to save our souls. ORDINARY KONTAKION IN TONE TWO O protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the Creator most constant, O despise not the suppliant voices of those who have sinned; but be thou quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession, and speed thou to make supplication, thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

EPISTLE tHE

His voice has gone out into all the earth. The heavens declare the glory of God. The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Colossians. (4:5-11, 14-18) Brethren, conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone. Tychicus will tell you all about my affairs; he is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts, and with him Onesimus, the faithful and beloved brother, who is one of

you. They will tell you of everything that has taken place. Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, and Mark the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructions— if he comes to you, receive him), and Jesus who is called Justus. These are the only men of the circumcision among my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me. Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you. Give my greetings to the brethren at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church in her house. And when this letter has been read among you, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you read also the letter from Laodicea. And say to Archippus, “See that you fulfill the ministry which you have received in the Lord.” I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my fetters. Grace be with you. Amen. 5

GOSPEL THE

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (10:16-21) The Lord said, “He who hears you hears Me, and he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” The Seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Thy Name!” And Jesus said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread 6

upon serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” In that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the spirit and said, “I thank Thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that Thou hast hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was Thy gracious will.”

Post Communion Prayer of St. Basil the Great (pray silently after receiving the Holy Gifts) O Master, Christ our God, King of all ages and Maker of all things, I thank Thee for all the good things which Thou hast given me and of partaking of Thine immaculate and life-giving Mysteries. Making the Most of the Time

St. Paul tells us in today’s epistle that we must make “the most of the time.” Although he is speaking specifically of how we should approach those outside the Church with the message of the Gospel, his words are just as meaningful in any and every kind of encounter we have with others. “Conduct yourselves wisely,” he says. “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt,” that means, speech that is lovely, attractive, delicious! We want our lives, our words, and our actions to mirror the love of the Compassionate Savior so that when we part people will be left with an image of what it really means to be a Christian. People should say, “What a nice, gracious, lovely, sane, holy, compassionate, loving, kind, extraordinary person that was!” And whether we speak directly about the Gospel or not, doesn’t matter. The Gospel lived supersedes the Gospel preached. Remember this amazing quote from Thomas Merton: “The saints are what they are, not because their sanctity makes them admirable to others, but because the gift of sainthood makes it possible for them to admire everybody else.” The saints often speak of how their hearts would burn with the almost unbearable fire of compassion, some spoke as if their hearts would explode from the burden of love they felt, others of how they wept through the night for the whole of creation. In Orthodox literature that is most undeniably a sign of great holiness. If you truly love as Jesus loves, then it will show in your sincere admiration for everyone you meet. And that, my friends, will be the greatest sermon you could ever preach. “The Lord said, ‘He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.’” We want everyone who comes to us to “hear” Jesus in our words and “see” him in our actions even if we do not say his Name. If we are accepted, then it will be because of love, If we are rejected, then let it be also because of love. But whether accepted or rejected let us respond as Jesus did by giving his life so that others might live. +Fr. Antony Hughes
